  • The purpose of this study is to empirically structure the patterns of baby boomer retirees'consumption and their effects on depression in later life. Using the 5th wave of Korea Retirement and Income Study(KReIS) in 2013, of baby boomers born in 1955 to 1963, we analyzed those who were completely retired(n=420). The Latent Profile Analysis(LPA) classified the empirical patterns of consumption and then a multiple regression analyzed the effect of consumption patterns on depression among these baby boomer retirees. The LPA results showed that the consumption patterns consist of five groups: (1) Basic life-oriented class(26.9%), (2) Balanced consumption class(29.3%), (3) Social life-oriented class(18.3%), (4) Leisure-oriented class(18.5%), and (5) Education-oriented class(7.0%). Baby boomer retirees' depression was associated with their consumption patterns. Specifically, the basic life-oriented class showed significantly lower depression than the education-oriented class. Other correlates such as higher education, having no spouse, lower subjective health, greater limitations in physical functions, having a diagnosed disability, having fewer children, higher dissatisfaction with leisure activities, and lower self-perceived economic status were associated with higher levels of depression in this study. These findings suggest meaningful implications for gerontological policy and practice for baby boomer retirees in Korea. In light of vulnerable retirement preparation, social services specialized for baby boomers should consider financial education for revamping consumption scale beyond asset management and long-term case management of pre and post retirement cases.

Among the 400 surveys, 371 participants were collected and 350 respondents were analyzed for the statistical analysis to verify research purposes. SPSS 21.0 program was used to derive the following: factor analysis, reliability analysis, simple regression, and multiple regression analysis. Results shown that, first, service quality at the discount store can affect the customer's satisfaction. The factors which can affect the customer's satisfaction are type, empathy and credibility but guarantee and reactivity don't affect it. Second, service quality at the discount store can affect a customer's revisiting. The factors which can affect the customer's revisiting are type, guarantee, empathy and credibility but reactivity doesn't affect it. Third, the customer's satisfaction at the discount store can affect the customer's revisit intention. Through this study, food court service quality can affect not only the customers' satisfaction but also consumers' revisit intention. • In order to investigate the factors influencing QOL and life satisfaction of the physically disabled, the author interviewed, by using structuralized questionnaire, 440 individuals among the physically disabled who were participated in Health Examination from April to July, 1997. The questionnaire consisted of the general characteristics(sex, age, marital status, family number, etc), the Reintegration to Normal Living Index(RNLI) to assess QOL, and the single item of five-likert scale to evaluate life satifaction. The means of RNLI were $16.2{\pm}4.8$ in total score, $12.2{\pm}3.4$ in daily functioning and $4.0{\pm}2.1$ in perception of self. The respondents were less reintegrated toward social activities and relationships than impairments or disabilities. While the satisfied group was 47.3%, the dissatisfied group was 52.7%. As the results of multiple regression and logistic regression analysis, the significant predictors of QOL were age, education, job, grade of disability and subjective health status. The life satisfaction were related to economic status, job and subjective health status. To improve QOL and life satisfaction of the physically disabled, it is important that we improve their basic socioeconomic status by getting a job through rehabilitation education and induce them to have positive self-assessment by extending the opportunity of social participation.

  • This study examined the factors affecting social welfare service utilization of general group and low-income group. The following influencing variables were selected based on the model developed by Anderson and Newman(1973): predisposing factors, enabling factors, need factors. The result shows that in both group the possibility of service utilization is high in case of having a spouse, more family members, feeling one's health ill, no chronic disease. And service use level is high in case of having no spouse, lower income in general group, higher income in low-income group, more family members, feeling one's health ill, having a chronic disease. In addition, the higher service use level is associated in low-income group with men rather than women, younger age, low education, the unemployed rather than the employed, urban residents, low life satisfaction. These findings provide implications and suggestions that each income group has various characteristics and needs, so it is necessary to provide comprehensive and appropriate services through the investigation for potential service recipients' needs.

  • This study aimed to examine the direct effects of relationships with parents, peers, and community child center teachers on the school adjustment of low-income adolescents attending community child centers and the indirect effects mediated through adolescents' resilience. The second-term panel data from the fourth-year Community Child Center Survey was used to analyze 198 adolescents (103 boys, 95 girls) who were first graders at middle schools. SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 20.0 were used to analyze the data through structural equation modeling. The results of the study were as follows: Parental monitoring and peer trust had direct effects on the adolescents' school adjustment, while satisfaction with community child center teachers did not. Parental monitoring, peer trust, and satisfaction with community child center teachers had indirect effects on adolescents' school adjustment mediated through resilience. The school adjustment of low-income adolescents has received attention from both researchers and politicians. The results of this study are notable in that both the important relationships and resilience of low-income adolescents can significantly contribute to their school adjustment in their first year at middle school. Given the developmental needs of low-income adolescents, interventions for school adjustment that consider adolescents' important social contexts and psychological characteristics should be developed.

  • Recently increasing young adults have experienced serious economic difficulties in their transition to adulthood and so a great deal of parents have to help their children financially even well after children finish their schools. Utilizing the 2008 Social Survey, a nationwide representative survey collected by the Statistics Korea, this paper examines how children, mothers, and fathers think about parental support to adult children. Respondents of the 2008 Social Survey answer how much parents support economically to their children about the following four items: college education, graduation school education, spending money while searching for jobs, and marital preparation. Analyzing a sample of 1,727 high school students and their parents, I find that the three family members generally accept economic support to the above items as part of parental duties. Also comparisons of the three family members' attitudes indicate that they usually reach the consensus about the dutiful scope of parental support to adult children. Logistic regressions reveal that male teens and children with conservatism are more likely to believe in wider scope of parental economic duties. And parents who are on good terms with children and are high in educational and occupational levels are more willing to support adult children. I conclude with implications of the findings for intergenerational relationships.
