  • The purpose of this study is to empirically test some hypotheses derived from the alliance model of the family, which focuses on theorizing situations in which family members simultaneously compete with other members within a family and rivals in society to maximize their statuses in the family and in society. Specifically, associations between wives' level of income relative to that of their husbands and each spouse's satisfaction with family relationships were examined, using the first wave of Korea Welfare Panel Study having been conducted in 2006 by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The results of the analyses showed that three ones among four research hypotheses were supported. Wives' satisfaction with family relationships was negatively associated with their relative level of income. This pattern strongly appeared among wives from lower class families rather than among wives from middle/upper class families. Relationship between wives' relative level of income and husbands' satisfaction with family relationships was likely to be bi-directional among husbands from middle/upper class families. Unlike the author's expectation, however, this bi-directional relationship was not observed among husbands from lower class families.

  • This study was conducted to determine how the family relationships of the middle-aged affect their life satisfaction and how family support services regulate the association between the two factors. A total of 8,695 middle-aged residents(aged 50 to 64 years) were chosen from among resident-respondents of the needs survey administered to establish the 4th local social security plan in Gyeonggi-do. The moderating effect of family support services on the relation between family relationship difficulties and life satisfaction was investigated. The analysis showed that the life satisfaction experienced by the middle-aged is slightly higher than the middle level. The lower the difficulty in family relationships, the higher the use of family support services, the more women than men, and the better the economy, the higher the life satisfaction of middle-aged. As a moderating variable, family support services significantly moderate the effects of family relationship difficulties experienced by the middle-aged on life satisfaction. The results are meaningful in that they comprehensively shed light on the difficulties that confront family relationships and the relationship structure of family support services, thereby contributing to the search for life satisfaction among the middle-aged in Gyeonggi-do.

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare basic data to set the support direction for low-income households in a socioeconomic crisis situation. The study examined the effect of socioeconomic deprivation experience on the longitudinal changes in family conflict and family relationship satisfaction of low-income households. Using five-year data from the 10th to 14th sessions of the Korean Welfare Panel, we examined the longitudinal changes in family conflict and family relationship satisfaction, and the effect of socioeconomic deprivation experience from the reponses of 803 low-income households. We found that the family conflict of low-income households decreased to a weak level with the change of time, and the rate of change in family relationship satisfaction was not meaningful. In the case of families who experienced early socioeconomic deprivation, their initial value of family conflict was higher than that of inexperienced households, and the rate of change was not significant. The results of this study show that when low-income households experience socioeconomic deprivation, they feel psychological pressure and an increase in family anxiety, resulting in high family conflict and low family relationship satisfaction. On the basis of the study results, we recommend extending economic and social assistance to low-income households in the current socioeconomic crisis. The state is also encouraged to help families manage conflicts on their own and resolve problems.

  • The purpose of this study was to shed light on a role of hope in understanding the relationship between the search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction and to suggest ways to increase hope among Korean students. We hypothesized that the relationship between search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction would be mediated by hope and the positive relationship between search for meaning and hope would be strengthened by family support and friend support. We conducted two surveys to examine the hypotheses. Based on Study 1 using a sample of 190 undergraduate students, we found that the relationship between search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction was fully mediated by hope. In Study 2, we examined the four types of hope that include internal hope and three types of external hope (i.e., family, friends, and supernatural being) to extend knowledge on what features of hope mediate the relationships between search for meaning and academic satisfaction. Study 2 based on a sample of 313 high school students showed that the link from the search for meaning in life and academic satisfaction was fully mediated by internal hope and external-peers hope. The mediating effects of external-family hope and external-spiritual hope were not significant in Study 2. Also, we found that family support strengthened the positive links from the search for meaning in life to hope (Study 1) and to internal hope (Study 2) while the interactive effects of friend support and the search for meaning on hope were not significant in both studies. Based on the results, we discussed several implications, limitations, and recommendations for future research.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of core-self evaluation on work-family facilitation(work to family facilitation, family to work facilitation), job satisfaction and turnover intention among non-regular workers in Korean food service industry. In order to examine the hypothesized relationships, frequency analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis and covariance structure analysis were performed using SPSS(10.0) and AMOS(4.0). The results showed that core-self evaluation had a significantly positive effect on both of work to family facilitation and family to work facilitation. In the case of relationship between work-family facilitation and job satisfaction, only family to work facilitation had a positive effect on job satisfaction while there was no evidence of a significant relationship from work to family facilitation to job satisfaction. Additionally, job satisfaction had a significantly negative effect on turnover intention. The article concluded with managerial implications for managerial and future research directions.
