A Study on the Conflict of Family Support in the Novels of Park, Wan - Se (박완서 소설에 나타난 노인에 대한 가족부양 갈등 연구)

  • In the wake of the radical structural change of the society, problems in family support for the old aged have arisen. Against this backdrop, the aim of this study was to examine aspects of the conflicts in family support focusing on novels by Park Wan-seo, and to analyze the expression of the family support awareness within the social consciousness. It selected the works that contain the contents of the elderly's support among 92 short stories, which were published from 1970s and 2006. Married Working Women's Work-Family Conflict and Facilitation on Depression (맞벌이 여성의 일가족 경험이 우울에 미치는 영향 : 일가족갈등과 일가족촉진의 통합적 접근)

  • This study set out to investigate relationship between work-family conflict and depression and especially moderating effect of work-family facilitation. Data came from Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Family 2012. The final sample size was 2,716 married employed women in South Korea. Analysis methods were multiple regression analysis. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, married employed women showed more higher level of work-family facilitation than work-family conflict and work-family facilitation correlated with work-family conflict positively. Second, work-family conflict affected significantly depression. Third, work-family facilitation moderated significantly the relationship between work-family conflict and depression. The limitations and implications of the findings from this study were discussed with respect to further studies.

Influence of Work-family Related Values on Work-family Conflict and Facilitation: Focused on Married Working Woman (한국 기혼여성근로자의 일-가정 양립 관련 가치관이 일-가정 갈등 및 촉진에 미치는 영향)

  • This article was aimed to investigate the effects of 'values related to work-family balance' on work-family conflict and facilitation. Participants were 311 married working women, who were in the thirties fifties. The major findings of this study were as follows. First, work-orientation and extrinsic work value had significant positive influence on work-family conflict. Second, in addition that both of work-orientation and family-orientation had positive effect on work-family facilitation, it was revealed that family-orientation showed moderating effect on work-orientation and work-family facilitation. Third, the variance of independent variables on work-family facilitation was twice as much as on work-family conflict. These results indicated that 'values related to work-family balance' were important factors as well as were worthy of notice when it comes to work-family facilitation.

Study on the Possibility of Generational Conflicts Related to Family Care-giving Functions (가족돌봄기능과 관련된 세대갈등 가능성에 대한 고찰)

  • The Purpose of this study was to explore the generational conflicts around adult children's taking care of elderly parents and grandparents' caring for grand children. The results of this study were as follows. First, the child care responsibility of the parents' generation is much more intense than that of the parent care responsibility of the children's generation. Second, the norm of parent care has changed from being the responsibility of the eldest son to being the responsibility of all of the children, which had led to an increased probability of conflicts between the two generations due to the differences in expectation and reward. Third, the bilateralization of the kinship increases the responsibility of women in taking care of their families, which leads to an increase in conflict among women of different generations. Finally, the generational conflicts related to family care appear across different social classes.

Factors Affecting Family Strength of Married Adults : Focused on the Family-of-Origin Experiences (기혼 성인의 가족건강성에 대한 영향요인 : 원가족경험요인을 중심으로)

  • The present study set out to investigate influencing factors on family strength. The sample consisted of 249 male and female married adults who were in the class of social welfare in S cyber university. Analysis revealed that married adults' family strength level was 3.86(above the moderate). Among variables, marital status, religion, income, economic problems couple conflict, conflict with mother-in-law, children's problem, family of origin experiences were associated with family strength. Regression analysis revealed that family cooperation and harmony of family were associated with family strength among 8 sub-factors : overall emotional health of family, conflict resolution, acceptance of separation and loss, permission to others, harmony of family, family cooperation, independence in extended family, power balance in family. These findings highlight the collective characteristics of Korean family and traditional values emphasizing the harmony influences the family strength through the generation.

The Marital Conflicts and Coping Strategies in the Multicultural Families (다문화가족의 부부갈등과 갈등대처전략)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out marital conflicts and coping strategies among married female immigrants and Korean men in multicultural families. The data were collected by in.depth interviews with 12 female immigrants and 5 Korean men. The major findings of this study are as follows: Female participants suffered from marital conflicts with their spouses, conflicts with mothers.in.law, stereotyped gender roles as a wife and a daughter.in.law, economic conflicts, and cultural differences between Korea and their country. In addition, male participants reported conflicts from economic support for their wife's family, gender role differences, and cultural differences. Coping strategies used to deal with the conflicts, such as mutual dedication and understanding their spouse's stance, and developing a compromise for the family's happiness were mentioned. A personal positive nature and attitude helped them to meet the marital conflicts. Supports from their husband, parents.in.law, and society also helped female immigrants to adapt to cultural differences. However, some of them used negative coping strategies which did not reduce conflicts, and resulted in separation and divorce. The coping strategies to deal with the conflicts depended on the participants' personal ability. While female participants who had English language skills took advantage to adapt to Korean society, those who did not have any other natural abilities could develop a definite position in their family and society with their diligence and positive attitude. The results showed that female participants who were supported by their family and society tended to cope successfully with conflicts and also showed that multicultural families' marital adjustment was maintained with their efforts as well as by relationships with their relatives and society.
