  • Specific energy curves for water removal in vacuum-press drying of different thick softwoods of red pine (Pinus densiflora), white pine (Pinus koraiensis), larch (L. leptolepis) and Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) were split into three sections: increased slowly, fairly constant, and increased rapidly. Calculated specific energy for 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11cm thick lumber was a value of 0.483, 0.649, 0.814, 0.977 and 1.138kWh/kg of water, respectively. Specific energy almost linearly increased as lumber thickness increased, and specific energy for severe schedule was less than that for mild schedule. Average specific energy was 0.712kWh/kg and vacuum-press drying consumed less energy as compared with any other drying methods.

  • Characteristics of heating and drying of Canadian-imported Douglas-fir timber using microwave in order to secure convenience and quality of drying timber and to get basic data for secondary conservation treatment are as follows: As the results of analysis of change curves of internal temperature of the timber after irradiating it, round timber and board timber showed stable heat distribution, heat consumption and surface water-content in heating with 30kW for 30 minutes and 120 minutes and with 40kW for 3 minutes and 9 minutes, respectively. Especially, surface water-content distribution according to heating by microwave showed very even leveling and water-content decrease rate was also more 30% compared to its weight showing excellent dry efficiency. And in case of soaking timbers into liquid chemicals for secondary conservation according to the analysis results of heat consumption, it is expected that large amount of preservative will be permeated. Therefore, timber heated by microwave is remarkably available for using industrial materials and developing secondary utilized products with its fast water-content decrease and dryness and higher heat consumption.

  • Red pine (Pinus densiflora), white pine (Pinus koraiensis), larch (Larix leptolepis) and Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) lumber were vacuum-press dried under three drying schedules to investigate current moisture contents (MC), drying rates and drying time factors related to five lumber thicknesses of 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11cm. Current MC could be estimated by drying factors such as lumber thickness, initial Me and drying time. Average drying rate from 30% to 15% Me was the highest for Western hemlock below fiber satuartion point, red pine, white pine and larch in the order of their magnitude. Drying rate curvilinearly decreased as lumber thickness increased. Drying time factor curvilinearly increased as lumber thickness increased.

  • It was found that test piece heated rapidly by 3 kW microwave for 5 minutes satisfies the targeted temperature and the percentage of moisture content, and the highest rate of weight increase is obtained in case of 120 minute immersion in the mixture of phosphates and heterocyclic compounds, from the result of such analysis as: kiln drying schedule, flame retardent by flammability test, insect resistance by termites, and permeability of combined penetrant for the wood after assigning multifunctional finish by immersing conifer structural frame, which is used for the frame work of wooden house and indoor/outdoor finishing in flame retardant and insect repellent materials mixture with the remaining heat of microwave. In addition, after a test of flame retardent treated item, it was identified that every mixture of phosphates corresponds with the standards of flame retardent, and upon investigation of moritality of 7 days after putting termites, it was showed that test piece immersed in the mixture of phosphates and heterocyclic compounds has the best characteristics, showing over 96% of high moritality. From the analysis of inward permeability of combined penetrant for the wood, it was decided that excellent performance in the flame retardent and insect resistance of the wood revealed due to full penetration of combined penetrant as it was found that combined penetrant penetrated through the whole inner cells of the wood.

  • Three heat-treatment schedules were applied to $90{\times}90mm$ dimension square lumber of Pinus koraiensis, one of major domestic species, and their colors and physical properties were investigated for obtaining an optimum schedule. Each square lumber was heat-treated three times. The temperatures of $170^{\circ}C$ and $190^{\circ}C$, and the time of 9 hours and 13 hours were used for the first heat-treatment. The schedule of $190^{\circ}C$ and 7 hours were used for the next two heat-treatments. The averages of brightness $L^*$ decreased linearly as the heat-treatment repeated and its standard deviations also decreased slightly. While the averages of color difference ${\Delta}E^*$ increased linearly as the heat-treatment repeated and its standard deviations also increased slightly. The average compressive strength of the heat-treated specimen was higher than that of the control by 9%, which deviates from previous reports. ASE and WPG of the heat-treated specimens were measured to confirm that heat-treatment improved dimensional stability significantly.

  • Since ports play a role of gateway to the sea and hinterlands, it is essential to analyse the networks of shipping and inland when evaluating the function and development of a port. The container port of Gwangyang, starting to operate its facilities in 1998, has developed itself as a hub port. Using the data of shipping schedules of Korean ports and the measurement of centrality in sociology, this study analyses the process of world-wide shipping network expansion in Gwangyang and concludes some implications including earlier development of shipping networks due to incentives to shipping companies. Although Gwangyang port also has been expanding its inland network through developing trucking, railway transport, and coastal shipping, it has weakness in inland network as in the cases of interruption in 2004, resumption in 2009 and re-interruption in 2012 at coastal shipping. In 2000s the expansion of shipping and inland networks at the newly built container ports such as Pyungtaek, Ulsan, and Gunsan has enticed the competition among Korean ports at each hinterland. Nevertheless, the operation of Gwangyang container port is considered to affect indirectly the relocation of some manufacturers including Samsung Electronics. Studies on interrelation between development of container port and geographical demography of manufacturers are needed to assess the effects of container port on regional economy.
