A Study on the Natural Convection from the Isothermal Square Beam Attached to an Adiabatic Plate (단열판에 부착된 등온 사각비임에서의 자연대류 열전달에 관한 연구)

  • Steady laminar natural convection heat transfer from the isothermal square beam attached to an adiabatic plate has been studied for various inclination angles of the adiabatic plate and Rayleigh number by using Mach-Zehnder interferometer in air. As the inclination angles change, the different temperature and fluid flow field were obtained by the ascending heated fluid and the adiabatic plate. In this study, the inclination angles were $0^{\circ}$(positive & negative), $45^{\circ}$(positive & negative), and $90^{\circ}$. The maximum total mean Nusselt number value was found at a positive inclination angle ${\theta}=45^{\circ}$.

Experimental Study on the Thermal Performance of a Domestic Solar Air Heater with Protruding Triangular Openings on the Absorber Plate (흡열판에 돌출형 삼각 개구부가 설치된 가정용 태양열 공기가열기의 열성능에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • A solar air heater was designed for supplementary domestic heating. The absorber plate had a series of protruding notches which had triangular openings on the front surface of the absorber plate to direct partial air flow to the rear surface and to enhance the convective heat transfer to the flowing air. The height of the opening as well as the opening configuration was determined by preceding numerical simulations. The experimental model had an absorber plate of 0.78-m width and 1.0-m length which was coated with black paint. The air temperature increased as much as $18^{\circ}C$ for $90-m^3/h$ flow rate when the absorber plate was inclined by $45^{\circ}$ for a clear-day solar irradiation of about $906W/m^2$. The collector efficiency ranged from 69 to 74%. Considering the simplicity of the structure and low manufacturing cost, the solar air heater might have competence as an auxiliary heating device for domestic use. On-site experimental results are presented with discussion for various solar irradiations and air flow conditions.

  • The quantitative assessment of the effect of the residual stress on fracture behavior was executed by some experiment and numerical analysis. First of all, artificial residual stresses were imposed on CT(Compact Tension) specimens by local heating using gas torch, and an appropriate distribution of residual stresses was obtained by thermal elastic-plastic FE analysis. To certify the result of the FE analysis, an experimental measurement was performed in accordance with ASTM standard. Fracture toughness test was executed on the several types of specimens. The first type was the specimen without residual stresses, and the others had different peak value of compressive residual stress at crack front via controlling the heat flux. All the test results were presented on th J resistance(JR) curves and discussed to verify the effect of compressive residual stresses on fracture behavior.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis in the Surroundings of Impingement Baffle Plate of the Extracting Nozzle for Disclosing Shell Wall Thinning of a Feedwater Heater (급수가열기 추기노즐 충격판 주변의 동체감육 현상의 완화를 위한 실험 및 수치해석적 연구)

  • Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle-installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction steam line- inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data on effect of geometry of the impingement baffle plate on the shell wall thinning. Additionally, a new type impingement baffle plate was installed above the impingement baffle plate in the feedwater heater and then the numerical and experimental study were performed in the same progress.

  • The concrete void slab structure with the existing mushroom slab, is the structure that maximizes the advantages, while minimizing the weakness with removing useless body force of the concrete part, located on the center of the slab cross-section, which does not need to support the structural weight. In this research, a fire test is performed to analyze how the blaze behave according to the thickness of slab cover, with the practical span length of concrete void slab for the slab length 7.5 m. With this heating test, we assumed the uniform-load-model considering fixed loads and live loads, and chose the standard fire test condition. We measured the temperature changes and the deflection character according to the depth from the heat exposure side, and assessed the resisting capability according to the standard KS F 2257-1. The result comes out with the EPS model can secure about 2 hour fire-resisting-capability with 50 mm of cover depth.

  • A new homologous series with the general formula in which n is the longitudinal alkyloxy group, n=1-10, was synthesized. The thermotropic and liquid crystalline properties were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and on the hot-stage of a polarizing microscope. All of the new compounds were monotropic and texture observations proved that all investigated homologues with n=1-10 exhibited nematic phases. Also, the compounds showed pronounced alternation effects in the homologous series with constant lateral bridging group, oxydecamethyleneoxy, but increasing longitudinal chains, n.

  • On-board black body is used for radiation temperature calibration of spaceborne radiometers and imaging systems. The thermal design of black body proposed in this study is basically composed of heaters to heat-up the black body from low to high temperature during the calibration, heat pipe to transfer residual heat on the black body just after calibration to radiator on the S/C and heaters on the radiator to keep the certain temperature range of the black body during non-calibration. In the present work, the effectiveness of thermal design of on-board black body has been investigated by on-orbit thermal analysis.

  • The ship's bows and sterns are assembled with the curved blocks. In shipyards, the roller bending and the line heating or others are being used to fabricate such doubly curved shell. Firstly, the cylinder- or cone-type is formed through the roller bending, and then, the line heating is implemented to form the rest. This paper presents an algorithm to determine the direction for the roller bending and the shape to be formed as fabrication information. The direction for the roller bending is determined with Gauss mapping of the desired surface and the shape to form is calculated by comparing the bent shape with the desired shape.

  • A homologous series of new H-shaped twin liquid crystal molecules (PPPA-n) with flexible spacers, oxypolymethyleneoxy, has been prepared by esterification of acid chloride of $\alpha$,$\omega$-bis(2,5-dicar-boxyphenoxy) alkanes with p-phenylphenol. The length of spacer was varied from oxyethyleneoxy (n=2) to oxydecamethyleneoxy (n=10). Their thermodynamic data were measured by differential scanning calorimetry and liquid crystalline properties were investigated by a hot-stage polarizing microscope.

In this paper, to compare wall thinning range according to change entrance nozzle diameter and position with reference numerical analysis model's wall thinning range, various numerical analysis models applied. In case of changing diameter, four different diameter is applied. And a side of nozzle position, two different position-vertical type and parallel type-is applied. And then this paper describes operation of numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. In conclusion, this study shows effective design for shall wall thinning by changing nozzle diameter and position.
