  • So far, the study on semi-solid process has been carried out to develop and research new advanced materials without some casting defects. In this study, A356 billets consisted of various dendritic shapes were prepared using electro-magnetic stirring process continuously. As-cast respectively has liquidus temperature of $625.6^{\circ}C$ and solidus temperature of $573.55^{\circ}C$ A356 slugs were reheated homogeneously at different temperatures of 580, 590 and $605^{\circ}C$, followed by squeezing in a mold insulated with applied pressures(0, 25, 50 and 70 MPa). In order to investigate on aging responce for casts, 50 MPa squeezed specimen among all specimens was prepared in aging treatments, which conditions are aging temperature of $160^{\circ}C$ and holding times of 0, 45, 90, 270, 360, 720, 1440 and 2880 min after solution treatment ($540^{\circ}C$ for 10 hr). SSM ingot with the output velocity of 150mm/min appeared more spheroidal shape and fine structure than that with the output velocity of 250 mm/min. According to increasing in reheating temperature, numbers of fatigue cycles, U.T.S and elongation increased at same time.

  • Despite the improved formability and processing advantages, the use of semi-solid metals is greatly limited due to the difficulties in controlling the optimum forming parameters. In the present study, the tensile properties of closed die, pressure formed semi-solid A356 alloy were examined. It was demonstrated that the tensile strength of thixoformed A356 alloy could be greatly reduced when the forming parameters were not rigorously controlled. The reduced strength of unappropriately formed products appeared to be related to the coarsening of the primary phases. The possibility of improving tensile properties of as-formed products by simple post heat treatment was also assessed.

  • We newly propose the silver alloys of Ag-5wt%Ge-2.5wt%Cu(Ge1) and Ag-5wt%In-2.5wt%(In1) to overcome the tarnish and mechanically weak problems of the conventional sterling silver Ag-7.5wt%Cu (Cu1). We check the castability, surface color stability during process and wearing, and work hardening with plastic deformation of all three silver alloys. Our newly proposed silver alloys of Ge1 and In1 showed improved castability, anti-tarnish stability, and work hardening property compared to the conventional sterling silver, which implied that these alloys might be more appropriate for the high-end silver jewelry.

  • Metal matrix composites had generated a lot of interest in recent time because of their high specific strength and stiffness in specific properties. It was also highlighted as the material of frontier industry because strength, heat-resistance, corrosion-resistance and wear-resistance were superiored. In this study, the strength properties of $Al_{18}B_{4}O_{33}$/AC4CH composites were represented mixing the binder of $SiO_2$. It was also fabricated by squeeze casting. $Al_{18}B_{4}O_{33}$/AC4CH was fabricated at the melt temperature of $760^{\circ}C$, the perform temperature of $700^{\circ}C$ and mold temperature of $200^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 83.4MPa. Consequently, fatigue life was observed roughly in the order of AC4CH> nobiner> $SiO_2$, independently on crack propagation direction and stress ratio.

  • After produce the extracted wood to silicic acid gel, sodium carbonate and silicon dioxide with application of the making method for carbon dioxide, ignition time, ignition temperature, mass loss rate and critical heat flux are measured according to external radiation source (20, 25, 35 and 50 $kW/m^2$). From the results, pressure impregnation wood to use with water glass and carbon dioxide has fire retardant performance at heat flux (less than 20 $kW/m^2$) of Pre-Flashover fires. If we find out the excellent maxing ratio through continuously study, it might be decided to be able to be utilized as fire-retardant wood.

  • Research in heat transfer and solidification commonly involves experimentation and mathematical modeling with associated numerical analysis and computation. Inverse problems in heat transfer are part of this paradigm. During the solidification of metal casting, an interfacial heat transfer resistance exists at the boundary between the casting and the mold, and this heat transfer resistance usually varies with time. In the case of the squeeze casting the contact heat transfer resistance is decreased by pressure and ideal contact is almost accomplished. In the present work, heat transfer coefficient, which is inverse value of the heat transfer resistance, was used for convenience. A numerical technique, Non-Linear Estimation has been adopted for calculation of the casting/mold interfacial heat transfer coefficient during the squeeze casting process. In this method, the measured temperature data from experiment were used. The computational results were applied to the analysis of heat transfer and solidification.

  • The mechanical properties of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composites have been investigated in relation with manufacturing factors such as applied pressure of casting and binder amount of preform. It was found that tensile strength increases with an increase of applied pressure, but decreases with binder amount. Increase of tensile strength is attributable to refinement of microstructure, improvement of intefacial bonding between $Al_2O_3$ short fiber and matrix, decrease of porosity in the matrix. Due to the high thermal stability of alumina short fiber, tensile strength of composites at $150^{\circ}C$ was superior to matrix alloy at room temperature. To evaluate the strength of composites, modified Kelly-Tyson's equation was introduced. Manufacturing factor M was obtained calculating from experimental data. M values were increased with applied pressure, but decreased with binder amount. The initiation of microcrack appeared to be at interface and reinforcement colony. Amount of micro-dimple was increased with applied pressure, and interfacial debonding phenomenon was remarkable with an increase of binder amount.

  • The squeeze infiltration process is potentially of considerable industrial importance. The performance enhancements resulting from incorporation of short alumina fiber into aluminum are well documented. These are particularly significant for certain automobile components. Aluminum matrix composite automotive parts, such as diesel engine pistons or engine blocks are produced using squeeze casting apparatus or pressure die-casting apparatus. But the solidification process gets complicated with manufacturing parameters and the factors for porosity formation have not fully understood yet. In this study the formation of porosity during squeeze infiltration has been studied experimentally to achieve an improved understanding of the squeeze infiltration process for manufacture of short-fiber-reinforced components, particularly the mechanism of porosity formation. Al-based MMCs produced under a range of conditions were examined metallographically and the porosity characterised;a kind of matrix, an initial temperature of melt, and a volume fraction of reinforcement. The densimetry and the microscopic image analysis were done to measure the amount of porosity. A correlation between manufacturing parameters and defects was investigated through these.

  • Magnesium has been used as wheel materials in the automotive industry for more than 20 years. The magnesium wheels, which are lighter by 25% than aluminum wheels, provide easy controllability providing excellent road holding by the reduction of weight. The purpose of this work is to develop cast AZ91D alloy wheel by sand cast and permanent mold cast. The fluxless melting with the protective gas $(SF_6+CO_2)$ was Performed to eliminate oxidation of melt and impurity. The transfer of molten magnesium to the mold was done by using gas-pressurized Pump system through the heated pipe. The mechanical properites of AZ91D alloy wheel were investigated as a function of heat treatment, ingot composition.
