Properties of Low-Temperature Sol-Gel TiO2 Thin Films with Catalyst Content (졸-겔법으로 제작된 저온 TiO2 박막의 촉매농도에 따른 광분해 특성 분석)

  • ILow-temperature $TiO_2$ sol was synthesized with various catalyst contents by using a sol-gel method. $TiO_2$ thin films were produced by a dip-coating method and their optical, structural and photocatalytic properties were examined. Transmittance of $TiO_2$ thin films with 0.10 mol, 0.25 mol, 0.50 mol and 0.75 mol catalyst content showed high transmittance in the visible range. XRD results showed the anatase-to-rutile phase transition was accelerated with increasing catalyst content and the crystallinity size of the $TiO_2$ thin films increased with increasing catalyst content. SEM results indicated that the particle size of the $TiO_2$ thin films was the smallest with catalyst content of 0.25 mol. Photocatalytic results showed that methylene blue was completely decomposed in the presence of anatase film prepared with 0.10 mol, 0.25 mol and 0.50 mol catalyst content.

The Effects of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI on Allergic contact dermatitis induced by DNCB in Mice (황금(黃芩) 추출물(抽出物)이 DNCB로 유발(誘發)된 생쥐의 Allergy성(性) 접촉피부염(接觸皮膚炎)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was performed to investigated the effects of an immunosuppression and a mitigation of inflammation of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI on Allergic contact dermatitis. In order to study, after oral administration of Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI extract, contact hypersensitivity assay, general morphologic change of skin, sulfated acid mucosubstance, mast cell, IL-2R, ICAM-1 and CD11b were observed in BALB/C mouse induced allergic contact dermatitis by the contact sensitizing DNCB. Ear swelling in contact hypersensitivity assay was decreased in the Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGI extracts administered(HEGT) group, compared with DNCB painted group. In the general morphologic change of skin, hyperplasia of keratinocytes, increase of lymphocytes and inflammatory cell, increase of vasculogenesis and epidermal lymphocytes infiltration, increase of cell damage in epidermal basal layer and prickle layer were decreased in the HEGT group, compared with DNCB painted group. Increase of sulfated acid mucosubstance, mast cell, IL-2R positive cell, ICAM-1 positive cell, CD11b positive cell were decreased in the HEGT group, compared with DNCB painted group.

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Conformational Changes of Garlic (Allium sativum) Protein, Allivin (감마선 조사가 마늘(Allium sativum) 단백질 Allivin의 구조적 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • Conformational changes of allivin, a major allergen protein in garlic, by gamma irradiation were observed. Allium solution (3.0 mg/mL in 0.01 M PBS, pH 7.4) and raw garlic were irradiated in a gamma irradiation facility to be absorbed with doses of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 kGy. After irradiation, a half of irradiated allivin solution was filtered through 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ filtration kit. UV spectrum and SDS-PAGE were used for observing the conformational changes of allivin by gamma irradiation. Turbidity of allivin solution was increased by optical observation, and the result was validated by the increase of absorbance at 660 m. Turbidity of irradiated and filtered allivin solution significantly (p<0.05) decreased, and the concentration of soluble protein in the solution decreased by increase of the dose. Aggregation among allivin molecules was observed by SDS-PAGE, but irradiated and filtered samples showed decrease of allivin with reducing aggregation trend. SDS-PAGE profiles of irradiated raw garlic were not different. Results indicate that gamma irradiation can decrease the allivin in solution state which may impact on allergenic reaction of garlic.

Effects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid Supplement on the Composition of Fatty Acids, Expressions of delta-5 Desaturase (D5D) and Fatty Acid Desaturase2 (FADS2) Genes in Mice (식이지방에 첨가한 Conjugated Linoleic Acid가 지방산 조성, delta-5 Desaturase(D5D)와 Fatty Acid Desaturase2(FADS2) 유전자 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on the fatty acid composition in the plasma and liver, and the expressions of delta-5 desaturase (D5D) and fatty acid desaturase2 (FADS2) genes in ICR male mice using two different sources of fats in the diets. The experimental groups were divided into four groups: beef tallow (BT) and fish oil (FO), BT with CLA supplementation (BTC), and FO with CLA supplementation (FOC) groups. Ten mice in each group were fed with the experimental diets for 4 weeks. All mice were fed experimental diets containing 12% of total dietary fat (w/w) either with or without 0.5% CLA (w/w). Fatty acid compositions were analyzed in the plasma and liver using gas chromatography. The levels of D5D and FADS2 expression were analyzed by RT-PCR in the liver The results showed that CLA participates competitively with C18:2 in the elongation and desaturation processes, leading to significant increase in the levels of C20:4 and C22:6 in BTC group (p<0.05). The expression levels of D5D and FADS2 were higher in BT and BTC group than those of FO and FOC group. In particular, the expression of D5D gene was greatly upregulated in BTC group. Furthermore, the conversion ratios from C18:2 to C20:4 in the liver were higher in BTC group than those in other groups. Thus our results suggest that increased expressions of DSD and FADS2 genes may be responsible for the enhanced CLA effects on the desaturation in the BT containing saturated fatty acids rather than the FO rich in n-3 PUFA.

  • rust fungus, Uromyces truncicola, infected stems, branches and leaves of Sophora japonica trees, and 78% of planted host depending on investigated sites. Teliospores of this fungus were reddish brown, global to oval and $29-37{\times}24-27\;{\mu}m$. The urediniospores were yellowish brown, elliptical to oval with spiny surface and $28-39{\times}19-22\;{\mu}m$. In the infected branches cork layers were thickened, ray parenchymatous cells were distorted, branched or combined and increased in numbers. While ray parenchymatous cells in healthy branches were one or two layers, the cells in the infected branches were three or more layers to shape fusiform. In the infected branches xylem tissues also distorted and yellowish pigments formed in the intercellular space. In the less infected trees the hairs on the branches were dense and long, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls were ca 23.3 ${\mu}m$, while in the highly infected trees the hairs were less dense and short, and the thickness of upper epidermal cell walls was ca 17.4 ${\mu}m$. We think individual host trees resistant to this fungus are present.

Effect of Bi and Zr addition on yellow colour properties of environment-friendly ceria-based pigments (비스무스와 지르코늄 첨가를 통한 세리아계 친환경 노란색 안료 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Inorganic pigments have been received a great attention for various applications including paint, glazed ceramic ink, art tile, and building exterior due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability. Traditionally, the compositions of $PbCrO_4$, CdS and CdSe have been widely used as a yellow inorganic pigment. However, the use of these compositions has been restricted in recent years, because they contain harmful elements such as Cd, Cr, Pb and Se. In this study, new environment-friendly ceria-based pigment was synthesized using solid state reaction. Crystal structure and morphology of the obtained $Ce_{1-x}Zr_xBi_yO_{2-y/2}$ yellow pigment were analyzed using XRD and SEM, respectively. Substitutional effect of Zr and Bi on the pigment color was analyzed using UV-vis. spectrophotometer and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ analysis. The crystal structure of the obtained pigments was dependent on the calcination temperature. The color characteristics and absorption band of the pigments were dependent on the calcination temperature and Zr, Bi contents. As a result, all the obtained yellow pigments showed the effective absorption ranged from ultraviolet to visible light, and $Ce_{0.44}Zr_{0.36}Bi_{0.20}O_{0.19}$ (x = 0.36, y = 0.20) pigment showed the most brilliant yellow color.

Properties of Pt/${Al_0.33}{Ga_0.67}N$ Schottky Type UV Photo-detector (Pt 전극을 이용한 ${Al_0.33}{Ga_0.67}N$ 쇼트키형 자외선 수광소자의 동작특성)

  • Schottky type A $l_{0.33}$G $a_{0.67}$N ultraviolet photodetectors were fabricated on the MOCVD grown AlGaN/ $n^{+}$-GaN and AlGaN/AlGaN interlayer/ $n^{+}$-GaN structures. The grown layers have the carrier concentrations of -$10^{18}$, and the mobilities were 236 and 269 $\textrm{cm}^2$/V.s, respectively. After mesa etching by ICP etching system, the Si3N4 layer was deposited for passivation between the contacts and Ti/AL/Ni/Au and Pt were deposited for ohmic and Schottky contact, respectively. The fabricated Pt/A $l_{0.33}$G $a_{0.67}$N Schottky diode revealed a leakage current of 1 nA for samples with interlayer and 0.1$\mu\textrm{A}$ for samples without interlayer at a reverse bias of -5 V. In optical measurement, the Pt/A $l_{0.33}$G $a_{0.67}$N diode with interlayer showed a cut-off wavelength of 300 nm, a prominent responsivity of 0.15 A/W at 280 nm and a UV-visible extinction ratio of 1.5x$10^4./TEX>.

The Development and Validation of Instructional Strategies Using the Advanced Laboratory Equipment(ALE) in Science High School Chemistry Classrooms: A Focus of UV-Visible and IR Spectrophotometer (과학고등학교 화학수업에서 첨단과학 실험기기 활용 수업 전략의 개발 및 타당화: 자외선-가시광선 및 적외선 분광기를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the validation of instructional strategies using the Advanced Laboratory Equipment (ALE class) by investigating science high school students’ perception on ALE in chemistry classrooms and to consider the need for development of teaching materials on ALE class. 7 sessions of ALE including experiments with innovative equipment were developed and applied to 21 students in D Science High School. At the end of the sessions, questionnaire was given to the students. We also collected qualitative data by interviewing 9 students who participated in the questionnaire. We analyzed the data collected by In-depth interviews and students’ experimental reports. The result showed that ALE class was effective to enhance students’ understanding of learning concepts because the experimental time was shortened in real time data processing. Some students showed creative performance on solving scientific problems by using everyday materials in experimental process and developed perceptions of practical inquiry. Through this process, students’ positive attitudes and interests in science and heuristic inquiry skills were also enhanced. Developing ALE lesson materials will be helpful for students to understand science and technology and the domain of science in broader contexts.

Changes of the surface hardness and the light transmittance of PET film by ion implantations (이온 주입에 의한 PET막의 표면경도변화 및 광 투과도 변화)

  • Single or dual ion implantations were performed onto the transparent polyethylene terephthalate(PET) sheet, and the surface hardness and the light transmittance in the visual-UV range were examined. Nanoindentation showed that the surface hardness was the highest at about 50 nm depth from the surface and was increased by about 3 times when nitrogen ions were implanted with energy and dose of 90 keV and $1\times10^{15}\textrm{/cm}^2$ respectively. When dual ions such as He+N and N+C ions were implanted into PET, the hardness was increased even more than the case only N ions were implanted. Especially, when PET were implanted with N+C dual ions, the surface hardness of PET increased 5 times more as compared to when implanted with N ions alone. The light at the 550 nm wavelength(visual range) transmitted more than 85%, which is close to that of as-received PET, and at the wavelength below 300 nm(UV range) the rays were absorbed more than 95% as traveling through the sheet. implying that there are processing parameters which the ion implanted PET maintains the transparency and absorbs the UV rays. It can be considered that the increase in the hardness of polymeric materials is attributed to not only cross linking but also forming hard inclusions such as hard C-N compounds, as evidenced by the formation of the highest hardness when both N and C ions are implanted onto PET.

Comparison of Cold Pack and Capsaicin Application in Temporomandibular Disorder Treatment (측두하악장애 치료에 있어 냉찜질과 capsaicin적용에 관한 비교)

  • This investigation was carried out to evaluate the effect of pain control temporomandibular disorders with clinical application of capsaicin cream. 20 healthy subjects without systemic diseases were measured in current perception threshold and pain tolerance threshold with $Neurometer^{(R)}$ CPT/C (Neurotron, Inc. Baltimore, Maryland, USA) after cold pack, 0.025% capsaicin and 0.075% capsaicin cream application. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The current perception threshold of C-fiber was significantly higher to the baseline on. There were significantly increased in C- fiber current perception threshold of 0.025% capsaicin cream and 0.075% capsaicin cream application comparison to cold pack. 2. There was significantly increased in pain tolerance threshold of cold pack and 0.075% capsaicin application comparison to one of baseline as $A{\beta}$-fiber, There was significantly higher after cold pack and 0.025% capsaicin cream application than baseline as $A{\delta}$-fiber. In C-fiber case, 0.025% capsaicin application's was significantly increased than baseline one. 3.There were significantly higher C-fiber of 0.075% capsaicin application than baseline in visual analogue scale marking pain level of pain tolerance threshold.
