  • Formamide is a colorless fluid with ammonia odor, and irritable when inhaled. It has $LD_{50}$ value of > 5,577 mg/kg in rats for acute oral toxicity and NOAEL of 113 mg/kg/day for target organ (liver) of whole body toxicity. It is also known as reproductive toxicant (1B) and TWA(Time Weighted Average) for it is 10 ppm. Workplace measurements of work places dealing with formamide showed the ppm of all 25 samples was very lower than WEL. However, the exposure concentration can change, depending on workplace condition such as the intensity of work, operating local ventilation system, and wearing protection equipment (Respirators). Therefore, considering it with the risk of whole body toxicity and reproductive toxicity, exposure quantity of each imaginary scenario was calculated at 5.16, 1.72, and $0.43mg/m^3$. The average value was calculated at 0.02-0.58, 0.02-0.66 at 90 percent of cumulative distribution, 0.02-0.69 at 95 percent of cumulative distribution. Therefore, it was generally evaluated to be safe because all values were below 1. However, caution is required to prevent health hazard because it has hepatotoxicity and reproductive toxicity and risk of a high level momentary exposure, depending on the condition of workplace.

  • In this study, the effect of cryogenic liquefied natural gas leakage and loading on liquefied natural gas cargo hold is investigated to observe the performance of the polymer foam material that comprises the cryogenic insulation of the cargo hold. The primary barriers of liquefied natural gas carrier that are in contact with the liquefied natural gas will leak if damage is accumulated, owing to fluid impact loads or liquefied natural gas loading / unloading over a long period. The leakage of the cryogenic fluid affects the interior of the polymer foam, which is a porous closed cell structure, and causes a change in behavior with respect to the working load. In this study, mechanical properties of polyisocyanurate foam specimen, which is a polymer material used as insulation, are evaluated. The performance of the specimens, owing to the cold brittleness and the impregnation effects of the cryogenic fluids, are quantitatively compared and analyzed.

  • The spreading fire of very small floating particles after they are ignited is fast and t therefore dangerous. The research on this area has been limited to experiments and global simulations which treat them as dusts or gaseous fuel with certain concentration well m mixed with air. This research attempted micro-scale analysis of ignition of those particles modeling them as liquid droplets. For the beginning, the in-line array of fuel droplets is modeled by two-dimensional, unsteady conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species transport in the gas phase and an unsteady energy equation in the liquid phase. They are solved numerically in a generalized non-orthogonal coordinate. The single step chemical reaction with reaction rate controlled by Arrhenius’ law is assumed to a assess chemical reaction numerically. The calculated results show the variation of temperature and the concentration profile with time during evaporation and ignition process. Surrounding oxygen starts to mix with evaporating fuel vapor from the droplet. When the ignition condition is met, the exothermic reactions of the premixed gas initiate a and burn intensely. The maximum temperature position gradually approaches the droplet surface and maximum temperature increases rapidly following the ignition. The fuel and oxygen concentration distributions have minimum points near the peak temperature position. Therefore the moment of ignition seems to have a premixed-flame aspect. After this very short transient period minimum points are observed in the oxygen and fuel d distributions and the diffusion flame is established. The distance between droplets is an important parameter. Starting from far-away apart, when the distance between droplets decreases, the ignition-delay time decreases meaning faster ignition. When they are close and after the ignition, the maximum temperature moves away from the center line of the in-line array. It means that the oxygen at the center line is consumed rapidly and further supply is blocked by the flame. The study helped the understanding of the ignition of d droplet array and opened the possibility of further research.

  • Liquefied natural gas(LNG) is natural gas that has been converted temporarily to liquid form for ease of storage and transport it. Natural gas is the worlds cleanest burning fossil fuel and it has emerged as the environmentally preferred fuel of choice. In Korea, the demand of this has been increased since the first import from the Indonesia in 1986. LNG takes up about 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state by cooling it to approximately $-162^{\circ}C(-260^{\circ}F)$. The reduction in volume therefore makes it much more cost efficient to transport and store it. Modern LNG storage tanks are typically the full containment type, which is a double-wall construction with reinforced concrete outer wall and a high-nickel steel inner tank, with extremely efficient insulation between the walls. The insulation will be installed to LNG outer tank for the isolation of cryogenic temperature. The insulation will be installed in the base slab, wall and at the roof. According to the insulation's arrangement, the different aspects of temperature transmission is shown around the outer tank. As the result of the thermal & stress analysis, by the installing cellular glass underneath the perlite concrete, the temperature difference is greatly reduced between the ambient temperature and inside of concrete wall, also reducing section force according to temperature load.

  • LNG plant projects tend to be implemented in overseas owing to its characteristics, so their project management scheme is somewhat different from those of general projects. Value chain in a LNG plant project includes exploration/production of gases, physical liquefaction/chemical conversion processes, transportation and storage. Key factors in the chain include liquefaction process (including ultra-low temperature liquefaction) to convert natural gas into liquid materials or fuel, and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) package, as well as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) technology comprising control, operation and construction. Success of a complex LNG plant project implemented in overseas depends on decision-making process in project management. Accordingly, to develop a decision-making model in of plant construction, the study extracted none factors in project management by EPC stage and assessed importance of each factor. The result showed that items in both project management and project risk management are important. Especially, the study developed a decision-making model in the construction stage of a LNG plant project based on the project management factors and importance assessment. The developed decision-making model would lay groundwork in building a decision-making system in construction stage of project management.

  • Biomass is a sustainable alternative resource for production of liquid fuels and organic compounds that are currently produced from fossil fuels including petroleum, natural gas, and coal. Because the use of fossil fuels can increase the production of greenhouse gases, the use of carbon-neutral biomass can contribute to the reduction of global warming. Although biological and chemical processes have been proposed to produce petroleum-replacing chemicals and fuels from biomass feedstocks, it is difficult to replace completely fossil fuels because of the high oxygen content of biomass. Production of petroleum-like fuels and chemicals from biomass requires the removal of oxygen atoms or conversion of the oxygen functionalities present in biomass derivatives, which can be achieved by catalytic hydrodeoxygenation. Hydrodeoxygenation has been used to convert raw biomass-derived materials, such as biomass pyrolysis oils and lignocellulose-derived chemicals and lipids, into deoxygenated fuels and chemicals. Multifunctional catalysts composed of noble metals and transition metals supported on high surface area metal oxides and carbons, usually selected as supports of heterogeneous catalysts, have been used as efficient hydrodeoxygenation catalysts. In this review, the catalysts proposed in the literature are surveyed and hydrodeoxygenation reaction systems using these catalysts are discussed. Based on the hydrodeoxygenation methods reported in the literature, an insight for feasible hydrodeoxygenation process development is also presented.

  • for the removal of carbon dioxide in flue gas, which is the main cause of the global warming, chemical absorption methods were widely used for years. Alkanolamines such as MEA, AMP, MDEA are mainly used as an absorbent. In this study, cyclic amines - Piperazine, Piperidine and Cyclohelylamine are investigated to compare the chemical solubilities, absorption capacities and rate ot reaction. In conclusion, Piperazine is the most effective absorbent of $CO_2$ and ran be the excellent alternative to the former absorbents. Experiments were performed at 5, 10, 15 weight percent, 30, 40, $50^{\circ}C$, and the gas solubilities are determined by back-titration method, and using Gas Chromatography the absorption rate was compared.

  • The stratified flow can be seen in the oil and gas pipelines as well as pipelines related to ship's fluid machineries. Numerous theories and correlations have also been proposed in the past for the prediction of stratified flow in horizontal or slightly inclined pipe. The previous researches are mostly about the effects of physical properties, viscosity, phases densities and pipe geometries on the stratified flow. Very few study outcomes exist on the effect of gravity magnitude and large slop angle of pipe inclinations on the occurring condition of stratified flow. In this study, therefore, analytical procedures were conducted about the effect of both the change in the gravity magnitude and pipe inclinations on the stratified flow occurring conditions. From the analytical results, it was found that stratified flow occurred at the vertical upward inclination and at very low liquid phase flowrates in 0.17g and 0.33g conditions.

  • Through this study, we have attempted the thermodynamic analysis on the dimethyl ether (DME) separation process, which can be used for diesel alternative fuel, additive to LPG and natural gas. And we also have completed the simulation of DME separation process using PRO/II with PROVISION. As an appropriate thermodynamic models, we selected NRTL liquid activity coefficient model to describe the non-ideality between methanol and water. To estimate the vapor phase non-idealities, we have chosen the Peng-Robinson equation of state model. And we also use the Henry's law option to predict the solubilities of non-condensible gases like CO, $CO_2$, $H_2$, $CH_2$ and $N_2$ in methanol solvent. Case study showed that optimal solvent to feed molar ratio was 3.40

  • Baffle injectors are protruded into the combustion chamber and form an anti-pulsating baffle to prevent high-frequency combustion instabilities in transverse modes. Being exposed to a high heat-flux environment, the baffle injector has self-cooling passages through which kerosene is convected and heated. The baffle injector with 20 spiral cooling channels has been developed and successfully applied to 30 $ton_f$-class combustors without any performance loss due to an additional cooling. In this work, numerical analysis of conjugate heat transfer in baffle injectors with various cooling channel designs has been performed in order to reduce the fabrication cost which would be considerably increased for the 75 $ton_f$-class combustor. Prior to the application to a full-scale combustor, the thermal durability of the modified design has been verified through the subscale hot-firing tests.
