  • This study attempts to apply a conjoint analysis, especially using choice experiment, to quantify the economic benefits of health effects(mortality by lung cancer, asthma, acute bronchitis, chronic bronchitis) on air quality improvement in Seoul and Metropolitan area. The yearly willingness to pay for the highest improvement level which is available is estimated as 38,856 won per household. The aggregated value of Seoul and Metropolitan area is measured as 252.8 billion won annually. The quantitative result provided in this study can be usefully employed in policy-making process related to air pollution. Especially, it provides a methodological framework to estimate the benefits for various alternatives in health effects.

  • In Korea, nearly 100 billion won is spent annually under the name of energy voucher on 600,000 households for the last five years, and this is a unique case and hard to monitor worldwide. Therefore, no studies have been conducted to assess impacts of the energy voucher on energy consumption and cost burden alleviation for beneficiaries. This paper aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of energy vouchers in terms of energy expense. The propensity score matching was conducted on samples of low-income households based on the Korea Welfare Panel. Then, simple Difference-In-Differences and Fixed-Effect Difference-In-Differences models were applied to estimate the effect of energy vouchers. In results, the beneficiaries of energy vouchers would spend an additional 4,371~4,870 won per month on energy consumption. The ratio is equivalent to 51.9~57.7 percent of the aid, which is also the highest when compared with 23~56 percent of U.S. Food Stamp. In terms of energy welfare, voucher payment could become one of the best management practices. However, identifying the blind spots as non-reciprocal households and expanding the differential support mechanism that reflects the energy consumption environment should be solved in the future.

Vegetable and fruit intake in one person household: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010~2012) (국민건강영양조사 (2010~2012년)를 이용한 1인가구와 다인가구의 채소와 과일 섭취 비교)

  • Purpose: The aim of the current study was to compare the vegetable and fruit intake between one person households and those living with family. Methods: The 24-hour recall data of 14,914 persons over 20 years old who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2010 to 2012 were used for the final analysis. Consumption of non-salted vegetables and fruits (${\geq}400g/day$), fruits (${\geq}200g/day$), and kimchi (${\geq}120g/day$) was compared between one person households and those living with family. Logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between potential determinants and adequate vegetable and fruit intake. Results: After additional adjustments for age, household income, and total energy intake, no statistically significant differences in likelihood of low intake of nonsalted vegetable and fruit and kimchi were observed between one person households and those living with family. (Nonsalted vegetables and fruits: odds ratio (OR) = 1.15, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.79-1.68 for the men; OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.98-1.59 for women). However one person households have greater likelihood of low intake of kimchi than those living with family in women (OR = 1.72, 95% CI = 1.31-2.26). Conclusion: Although there were no differences in likelihood of low intake of non-salted vegetables and between individuals living alone and those living with family, women of one person households were great likelihood of low intake of kimchi compared to those living with family.

  • Single-person households recently have been rapidly increasing and one reason may be the increment in elderly single-person. Since the change of living patterns is relevant to the government policy direction, it is important to understand how single-person households are clustered and which factors have influence on them. In this study, we tried to detect spatial clusters of single-person households and low-income elderly single-person households after adjusting for deprivation index. A recently developed fused lasso for Poisson data was used for data analysis and we provided the details on how to use it in R. From these analysis results, we observed the effect of socioeconomic level on the clusters and explained the reason why spatial clusters are shown after adjusting for deprivation index.

  • Recently, the problem of noise has received much attention in the urban environment. This paper attempts to measure the economic benefits of urban noise reduction in the metropolitan area. To this end, the dichotomous choice contingent valuation method is applied. In particular, recently proposed one and one-half bound model that reduces the potential for response bias in the double bound model while maintaining much of its efficiency. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of 800 households in the metropolitan area and asked respondents questions in person-to-person interviews about how they would willing to pay for the noise reduction. Respondents overall accepted the contingent market and were willing to contribute a significant amount (997 to 1,778 won), on average, per household per month. This willingness varies according to individual characteristics such as concerns about noise, dwelling area, and income. The aggregate value of the noise reduction in the sampled metropolitan area amounts to approximately 79.26 to 141.35 billion won per year.

  • There is imminent need to find a way to measure the recreational benefits of water so that appropriate actions can be taken to make a multi-purpose reservoir. Therefore, this study attempts to apply a choice experiment to quantifying the recreational benefits of a multi-purpose reservoir, using a specific case study of Sangkwan multi-purpose reservoir. We consider the trade-offs between price and attributes of recreational attributes for selecting a preferred alternative and derive the marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) estimate for each attribute. The results show that the MWTP for providing additional 10,000 ton of water is estimated to be 3 won per household per year. The MWTP for improving 1 level of water quality is computed to be 645.5 won per household per year. Moreover, the MWTP for providing recreation facilities is calculated to be 1,518.6 won per household per year. This study allows us to provide policy-makers with useful quantitative information that can reduce uncertainty in the decision-making process related to a multi-purpose reservoir construction projects.

  • The study was carried out to analyze wood quality of coffin board, the wood species of coffin excavated in Youngdong, Korea. All coffin woods were identified as hard pines, Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora S. & Z.). According to wood quality of coffins, inner coffins of Bae Cheon-Jo and his wife showed similarity and dissimilarity comparing with several literatures. The similarity was in the structure of panels, bottom lining board and charcoal layer, and the dissimilarity was in jointing. From the analysis of fibrous materials attached to coffin woods, the paper mulberry and cotton fibers were identified. In the inner coffin of Bae Cheon-Jo, tool traces by handle planer were observed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the diversity of architectural characteristics of traditional Hanok using Pyonjakbub(變作法). The roof is essential element of Hanok and the proportion of the roof accounts for about a half of the Hanok elevation. The shape of a roof of Hanok has made by the structural method like Pyonjakbub. For this study, the investigation report of 'Korean traditional houses' and 'Cultural assets of wooden traditional house' published by Cultural Heritage Administration were used as it's references. The results of this study are as follows; Pyonjakbub is appeared differently according to the region and the house dates and it has strongly influenced the architectural characteristics of traditional Hanok-the width of a room, the cross section of inner space of a roof and the length of eaves, etc. In other words, the architectural characteristics of Hanok will be changed by using different Pyonjakbub. Using the proper Pyonjakbub, we will provide more satisfaction to the client who wishes to live in Hanok.
