Analysis of the Korean Copper Price Elasticity using Time-Varying Model (시변 모형을 이용한 국내 구리 가격탄력성 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed the changes in copper consumption according to copper price fluctuations and identified the domestic copper price elasticity. A total of 408 time series data from January 1989 to December 2022 were analyzed using the vector autoregressive (VAR) model with net import volume, price, and production index as variables. In addition, to identify changes in the correlation between variables over time, the dynamic relationship between variables was identified using the time-varying vector autoregressive (TV-VAR) model. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the negative price elasticity for copper is -0.1835. In addition, the interquartile range was -0.3130 ~ 0.0886, with no consistent trend over time, but mainly negative elasticity. This study can be used to quantify the expected impact of various policy proposals and changes related to minerals.

  • 닭고기를 비롯한 축산물의 시장개방이 가시화되어 가는 등 축산업 전반에 주어진 여건이 급변하고 있어 이에 적응하기 위한 노력이 필요하다. 물과 사료만 주면 죽지않고 커주는 것이 육계인데 관리에 신경쓸 것 있느냐고 말하는 육계업자를 종종 볼 수 있는데 앞으로 육계업을 계속할 것인가를 제고해 볼 때가 왔다. 가축에게 쾌적한 환경을 제공해주고 세심한 관리가 필요함에도 축산업 중 육계사가 가장 낙후된 사육시설 즉 햇빛과 비, 바람을 막아주는 역할에 그치고 있다. 부적합한 사육환경으로 생산성은 물론 질병, 인력 등 2중3중의 손실을 가져오고 있어 환경개선과 시설자동화를 모색해야 한다. 육계경기가 비교적 오랫동안 안정세를 보이고 있다. 그동안 축적된 자금여력을 시설개선에 투입하여 생산성 향상에 역점을 두어야 변화될 육계업에 적응할 수 있으리라. 계열화가 확대되고, 닭고기 저장시설이 갖추어지고 있어 탄력적인 생산이 가능함으로써 가격안정이 실현될 날이 멀지 않았다. 심한 가격진폭으로 입추시기를 잘 맞추는 것이 성패를 결정하여 주었던 육계업에서 생산비 경쟁으로 성패가 좌우되는 육계업으로 변화되어 가고 있다.

Price Elasticity Response to Gasoline Price Liberalization (휘발유가격 자유화에 따른 가격탄력성의 변화)

  • This paper investigates effect of gasoline price liberalization on price elasticity of gasoline demand. By using a model where a consumer optimizes her gasoline consumption and number of visits to gas station, we derive price elasticity of gasoline demand and its response to variation of size and frequency in price changes. It shows that price elasticity is decreased with increase in the size and frequency when the price rises. Since price liberalization increases the frequency but reduces the size, the effect of the liberalization on the price elasticity may not be determined. However, price liberalization can make the elasticity higher when the size reduction effect exceeds the frequency increase effect, which is consistent with empirical evidence provided by existing studies.

  • This paper presents a simple two-sector general equilibrium model of noncomparative advantage trade between structurally identical advanced economies. Attention has focused on the effects of trade in information technology (IT) goods and services on the wage inequality in the digital economy. The model confirms and illustrates that wage inequality in the digital economy reflect trade in IT goods and services between advanced economies. In particular, this paper shows that even though the relative price of skilled labor-intensive technology good is declined with trade in IT goods and services, the wage of skilled labor increases. The reason is that as Jorgenson (2001) has empirically found, the price elasticity of demand for the technology goods is elastic.

Demand for Residential Water in Stone-Geary Model (스톤-게리 모형을 이용한 가정용 생활용수 수요 추정)

  • This study estimates a demand function for municipal water in Seoul area using a Stone-Geary functional form. The Stone-Geary model offers more precise estimates for price elasticity of water demand since it explicitly separates 'basic demand' which is not influenced by the price from 'economic demand' which depends on the price. Our results show that about 84% of the total water demand is the basic demand. The results suggest that the minimum consumption range m stepwise price system should be lowered from $30m^3$ to $15m^3$ per month.

A Study on the Factor Demand Structure of Sweet Persimmon (단감의 생산요소 수요구조분석)

  • This study analyzes the factor demand structure of sweet persimmon as a part of finding out cost cutting measures. Income and cost data from 2001~2013 Agricultural Income Survey are used for placing the translog cost function and estimating price elasticies and cross elasticities of labor, capital and intermediate input. The result shows that own price elasticities of all factors are small in absolute terms. Additionally the result indicates capital and intermediate input cannot be a substitution for labor, which is a top-line cost-share. It means that the demand for labor cconstitutionally can't be reduced in a short time. This implies that cost reduction should be done focusing on intermediate input, particularly on fertilizer and materials which have higher price elasticity of demand.

Effects of Price Discount on the Demand and Revenue of Oriental Medical Clinic (한방의료의 가격인하전략이 한방의료에 대한 수요와 경영수지에 미치는 영향)

  • We have seen a sharp increase in the utilization rate of medical services since the launch of Nation Health Insurance system in 1989. However, the market share of oriental medicine in the Korean health sector has been gradually diminished mainly due to low insurance coverage and high price. Especially high price as an entry barrier to oriental medical services has played a major role in decreasing market share. This paper investigated the effects of price discount on the financial condition and market share of oriental medical institutions. Microeconomic theory and multiple regression analysis were used as a methodology in testing the alternative hypothesis: price discount of enveloped herb drug will result in increases in both the revenue and market share of oriental medical institutions. Data was collected from the statistical yearbook and sample survey. The price elasticity of demand for enveloped herb drug was estimated at 5.8 during 1987-1995 period, which means that a 1% decrease in price will bring about a 5.8% increase in the utilization of oriental medical services. The empirical result shows that a drastic price discount for the enveloped herb drug will eventually improve the financial status of the oriental medical institutions and enlarge the market share of oriental medicine in the Korean health care sector.

Price Response Function With and Without Choice Set Information in Denim Jeans Market (고려상품군의 유.무에 따른 가격반응함수의 비교연구)

  • The primary purpose of this study is to suggest a new methodology for calibration of a continuous price response function and to compare the differences in the price response function with and without choice set information. Through the new methodology, the two-staged conjoint analysis, the continuous price response function far jeans market was calibrated. Three steps were required to complete the two-staged conjoint analysis. Step one provided respondents with both a written and a visual description of two different randomly selected styles and colors of denim jeans. In step two respondents were asked to choose the combination of attributes they intended to purchase. Based upon the literature review, these four attributes included: brand, style, price, and color. Respondents were required to assess their purchase intentions for 32 combinations by marking Yes if she/he would purchase a given combination and No if she/he would not purchase a given combination. This allowed for identification of each respondents choice set. Instructions in step three required respondents to rate each combination marked Yes on a scale of 1-100, with one as least likely to be purchased and 100 as most likely to be purchased. This value served as the dependent variable for estimating the parameters in the model. Furthermore, the empirical study shows that there is a difference in price response function with and without choice set information. Therefore, when one calibrates a price response function far a given brand, we can recommend to include choice set information in his/her research.

An Estimation of Call Demand for the Internet Telephony (국내 인터넷전화의 통화수요 추정)

  • In this study, an estimation of call demand for the internet telephony was carried out using the monthly time-series data from June 2001 to December 2004. In the estimation, the call traffic was assumed to be explained by tariff of the internet telephony service, tariff of fixed and wireless services, income, quality of service, and lagged traffic variable. The traffic is assumed to follow the partial adjustment mechanism. The estimation result shows that the call traffic demand is elastic to the tariff of the service while it is inelastic to the change of income. The qualisty of service is regarded as an important factor of demand. Also there appeared the call demand is adjusting to the change of explanatory variables with some lags.
