  • VOCs emissions from industries cause the air pollution and odor. In the industrial facilities, the existing odor treatment techniques have limits and problems. In this study, the optimum essential oil and metal oxide selected by screening test. lavender oil, cypress oil and TiO2 were determined by deodorant materials and those were blended by 5%, 45%, 10%, respectively. In addition, the result of batch type experiments depending on the dilution rate, injection, rate, temperature showed that the optimum condition of deodorant is 6 mL of injection rate, and 200 times of dilution rate and the removal efficiency increased in proportion with temperature. In addition, the activation energy was calculated from the rate equation, which appeared in the 3-4 times lower than conventional deodorants.

  • Measure the type and content of VOCs for A-company epoxy coating and B-company floor coating(Type A, B), which are used as flooring materials for parking lots. Than the VOCs used gas detectors to measure gas emissions, assuming the worst environment to reduce errors in external environments in the formaldehyde, toluene and xylene harmful to workers and tenants. As a result, A-company epoxy coating has the largest amount of VOCs, and compared to A-company epoxy coating, B-company floor coating of A type represented about 79% less and B type about 96% less. In addition, A-company epoxy coating was also the highest in gas emission measurement for formaldehyde, toluene and xylene using gas detector after 1 hour and 8 hours in closed environment conditions. B-company floor coating A type was less than A-company epoxy coating, which was about 42.3% less measured. And type B satisfied all TWA even in closed environment conditions.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from various industrial sources commonly consist of biodegradable chemicals and recalcitrant compounds. Therefore, it is not effective to employ a single method to treat such mixtures. In this study, a novel hybrid system coupled with a ultraviolet (UV) photolysis reactor and a biofilter in a series was developed and evaluated using toluene and TCE as model VOCs. When only TCE was applied to the UV reactor, greater than 99% of TCE was degraded and the concentration of soluble byproducts from photo-oxidation reaction increased significantly. However, the toluene and TCE mixture was not effectively degraded by the UV photo-oxidation standalone process. The hybrid system showed high toluene removal efficiencies, and TCE degradation at a low toluene/TCE ratio was improved by UV pretreatment. These findings indicated that the UV photo-oxidation were effective for TCE degradation when the concentration of toluene in the mixture was relatively low. A restively high toluene content in the mixture resulted in an inhibition of TCE degradation. Thus, chemical interactions in both photo-oxidation and biodegradation need to be carefully considered to enhance overall performance of the hybrid system.
