Characteristics of Total Organic Carbon and Chemical Oxygen Demand in the Coastal Waters of Korea (한국 연안수에서 총유기탄소 및 화학적 산소요구량 분포 특성)

  • In order to improve our knowledge of the characteristics of organic compounds in coastal waters, water samples were collected from the Incheon coastal region, the Hyungsan River in Youngil Bay and the Busan coastal region. Also, mooring was carried out near the Kanghwa Island and Seo Island. In this study, the relationship between the total organic carbon (TOC) and salinity, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and salinity were evaluated and determined. Riverine end-member of TOC into the Korean coastal area and its COD estimated from these relationships were 5.32 mg C/l and 8.87 mg O$_2$/l, respectively. The oxidation efficiency of COD to TOC estimated using the high-temperature catalytic oxidation method was about 47%. The linear relationship between TOC and COD was derived as COD (mg O$_2$/l)=0.61${\times}$TOC (mg C/l) -0.03, (R$^2$=0.66). Therefore, it is possible to estimate total organic carbon using this equation from previously reported chemical oxygen demand.

  • 충청남도 서해안은 생태환경의 보고로서 갯벌, 사구, 해안습지 등 독특한 자연적 특성을 갖고 있는 지역이다. 그러나 다른 지역에 비해 대규모 간척 및 매립으로 인한 해양생태계 피해에 현저히 노출되어 있고, 최근 산업화 및 관광권화가 진행되고 있으며 해안선 침식 방지를 위한 연안정비사업으로 각종 연안 방호구조물이 건설되었다. 이 중 가장 많이 건설된 연안 호안구조물은 배후지역의 안정성 확보, 해안도로의 건설 등 다양한 목적으로 축조되었다. 그러나 성장위주의 경제정책으로 연안 호안구조물이 무분별하게 설치되어 파도와 호안 구조물의 접촉 시 호안구조물이 파랑을 견디지 못해 사면피복재가 산란되어 외관상 주변 환경을 해칠 뿐만아니라 2차 피해까지 야기 시킬 우려가 있다. 본 연구에서는 호안구조물의 리모델링을 통해 안정성을 증대시키기 위해 서해 연안지역의 4개 시 군 29개 지점을 대상으로 호안구조물 현황에 대해 조사하고 호안구조물의 리모델링을 통해 붕괴된 지역을 대상으로 파랑에 대해 안정한 사석재 소요질량을 호안구조물의 경사 별로 산정하여 비교하였다. 피복재 소요질량 산정을 위한 설계파고는 유의파고를 적용하였으며, 산정공식은 허드슨공식(Hudson, 1959)을 사용하였다. 추가적으로 사석 층의 두께와 단위면적당 수용해야할 사석재의 개수를 산정하여 호안구조물 설계 시 사석재의 배치를 용이하게 할 수 있도록 하였다. 본 연구에서 산정된 값들은 초기설계로서 파랑에 안정한 호안구조물의 설계 조건 중 일부분으로 호안구조물의 최종 설계 시 조파실험을 통하여 안정성을 검증 해야 할 것으로 판단된다.

  • The prevention of marine accidents has been a major topic in marine society and various polides and countermeasures rave been developed, applied to the industries. 1he coastal VIS and navigational aids are considered as one of the effective methods to promote marine safety but they need relatively huge amount of budgets to build Thus prior to establishing these coastal VIS and navigational aids, it should be evaluated the navigational safety level in the coastal waterways from the Environmental Stress. So far as human beings are concerned, there are many types of fuzziness in the evaluation of navigational safety level. In order to reflect these fuzziness on this evaluation, this paper introduces the fuzzy integral suggested by Choquet to represent the fuzziness in the evaluation process. This paper aims to develop the method for this evaluation from the viewpoint of mariner's operational stress using the fuzzy measure and Choquet integral. In this paper, Korean coastal area is divided into 8 sectors and evaluated the priority for the needs of coastal VIS and navigational aids.

The Response of Sea Levels to Typhoons in the Japan Sea -Part I. The Response on the North Japanese Coast- (동해연안역 해수면변동에 미치는 태풍의 영향 -I. 일본 북부연안에서의 해수면변동-)

  • The response of sea levels to a typhoon in the north Japanese coast in the Japan Sea is investigated by using hourly ses level data($1966{\sim}1986$) and a numerical shallow water model with high resolution($5'{\times}5'$). The observed sea level analysis shows (1) progressive waves exist between Simonoseki(SS) and Maizuru(MZ) with the mean phase speed of about 4 m/s during the passage of the typhoon, (2) the phase speed between Sasebo(SB) and HK(Hakata) is slower(about 1.7 m/s), and (3) the maximum sea level at HK is achieved about 0.5 day later than that of SS. In many aspects, the numerical model results correspond well to the above observed features. In the model the progressive waves are identified as a topographic wave with the phase speed of about 4 m/s. Before the typhoon passes through the Korea Strait/ the Tsushima Strait, the wave propagations along the Japanese coast are significantly influenced by the southwestward coastal jet induced by the wind stress parallel to the coast. The waves start to propagate northeastward along the coast when the coastal jet is weakened.

  • The purpose of this study is to implement concept of public to passenger ship route to promote benefits and adopt competition principle among ship companies to elevate business efficiency. As of year 2005, passenger ships operate in 106 routes departing from 10 harbors including Mokpo, Masan, and Inchonto provide transportation system to island residents. Contrast to other public transportation systems excluding some tourism routes, this essential passenger ship are unable to fulfill various customer services to the passengers due to stagnation or declination. In addition, route adjustment and flexible passenger ship operation are not expected due to private property right of the route. Therefore, establishment of public transportation system for remote island route is initiated for the connection between cities and islands, boost travel industry of island economy, and balanced growth oh the nation.

  • Until now, water pollution environmental monitoring system has been used at to acquire and measure data for streams and rivers. Recently coastal and marine environment monitoring system is becoming most important and urgent thing. The realtime automatic coastal and marine environment monitoring system using CDMA data transmission technique is developed in this study. The Embedded field server is designed and developed to acquire and measure underwater environment information such as pH, DO, water temperature using the water quality sensor. The obtained data is sent to the server via CDMA modem connected to the embedded field server and stored in database. Our purpose is to provide and monitor underwater environment information with CDMA communication in coastal areas.

Scattering of a Kelvin Wave by a Cylindrical Island (원통형 섬에 의한 Kelvin 파의 산란)

  • The theory for long wave scattering (Proudman, 1914: Longuet-Higgins, 1970) is applied to a tidal-frequency Kelvin wave propagating around a small cylindrical island in a shelf sea of uniform depth. The theory includes the effects of bottom friction on wave propagation. The theoretical analysis of the Kelvin wave around the island. this amplitude change results in a uniform amplitude of the total wave along the circumference of the island in an inviscid fluid, and the dynamic cause of this is explained in terms of Coriolis effects. Bottom friction attenuates the amplitude of the total wave from the frontal side of the island to the leeward side, but the amplitude variation along the coast becomes symmetric to the line connecting both idea. The phase of the scattered wave contributes to more rapid travel of the total wave in the front and leeward side than farther offshore. The effects of bottom friction on the wave phase around the island are negligible.

  • Storm surges caused by typhoon Billie, 28 Aug. ∼ 2 Sep. 1970, on the west and south coasts of Korea are studied with the tidal data. Tracks and frequencies of the typhoons which affected the Korean peninsula and the yearly maximum tidal deviation at tide stations for the past twelve years are also reviewed. It is assumed that most of the typhoons affecting the Korea peninsula cause variations of sea level along almost all of the coast of Korea. Maximum storm surges at each tide station on the south coast appeared to be caused by typhoons during the summer, and by the north westerly monsoon and extraordinary cyclones on the west coast during spring and winter. In the coastal waters of the west coast where depths are shallower and the bottom configuration is flat, sea level variation is mostly caused by atmospheric pressure and wind effect. When a typhoon travels as in case of typhoon Billie, sea level ascends generally on the south coast and it descends on the west coast before the typhoon approaches near to the coasts. Considering the large tidal range on the western and southern coasts, it is assumed that the extraordinary destructive surges can be occurred when the tide is high water. Reviewing the monthly mean sea level variations on the each coast, hazards to be caused by storm surges can more fluently occur during the summer.

A Study on Spatial and Temporal Distribution Characteristics of Coastal Water Quality Using GIS (GIS를 이용한 연안수질의 시공간적 분포 특성에 대한 연구)

  • In order to examine spatio-temporal characteristics of coastal water quality, we applied GIS spatial analysis to the water quality data collected from observation points located on Korean coastal area during 1997$\sim$2004. The water quality parameters measured included: chlorophyll-a, pH, DO, COD, SS, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic phosphorous, salinity, temperature. The water quality data used in this paper was obtained only at selected sites even though they are potentially available at any location in a continuous surface. Thus, it is necessary to estimate the values at unsampled locations so as to analyze spatial distribution patterns of coastal water quality, Owing to this reason, we applied IDW(inverse distance weighted) interpolation method to water quality data and evaluated the usefulness of IDW method. After IDW interfolation method was applied, we divided the Korean coastal area into 46 sections and examined spatio-temporal patterns of each section using GIS visualization technique. As a result of evaluation, we can blow that IDW interpolation and GIS are useful for understanding spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of coastal water quality data which is collected from a wide area far many years.
