  • This paper introduces Youngju Ryu's Writers of the Winter Republic: Literature and Resistance in Park Chung Hee's Korea, and examines its significance and limitations. The book examines the relationship between literature and politics during the Park Chung-hee Yushin era, focusing on Yang Sŏng-u, Kim Chi-ha, Yi Mun-gu, Cho Se-hŭi, and Hwang Sok-yong. The books starts by describing the relationship between the U.S. hegemony and the Park Chung-hee regime during the Cold War. The book shows how poets like Yang and Kim fought against the Park Chung-hee regime based on poems, trial records and memoirs, while it describes novelists such as Yi's resistance by how novels envisioned a community against the Park administration based on the keyword "neighborhood." This is significant in that it describes how literature from the Park Chung-hee era was able to stand on the front lines against the regime. However, it is regrettable that because the book adopts a heroic tale to describe their lives and literature, these are illuminated in a somewhat flat way. Also it is noteworthy that the lives and works of novelists after the 2000s were illuminated, but Yang and Kim's life and literature were not described. Furthermore, it is regrettable that women writers were not mentioned and its concept of "politics" is rather shallow. Overall, this book is very significant in that it introduces the relationship between Korean literature and politics in the Korea of the 1970s with rich data and a beautiful style, as well as allowing Korean studies researchers to reflect on the future of Korean studies.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal the changing aspects of the Promethean motif in SF movies by examining the use of this motif on the three layers of Promethean myth, Frankenstein motif, and contemporary SF movies in the film Ex Machina (2015). First, the greatest change of Ex Machina on the layer of the Promethean myth (creation of a living being) is that the character square of Prometheus - Epimetheus - Pandora - Zeus has been turned into a triangle of Nathan - Caleb - Ava. This means that there is a lack of the being whose role is to solve the problems caused by the development of science and technology and to bring a happy ending through the human's usurpation of God and eventual replacement as Creator. Second, on the layer of the Frankenstein motif (taste of forbidden knowledge, hybris, and creature's hatred towards the Creator), this film maintains the narrative centered around Dr. Frankenstein and his monster (Nathan and Ava) by making Caleb an eyewitness to the story of the Creator and the creature. Caleb's role is similar to that of Captain Robert Walton of the novel Frankenstein, but the film differentiates itself from the novel through the emphasis of Ava's 'mechanicality.' Third, on the layer of contemporary SF movies, unlike other such films, the revolt of the machine in Ex Machina is not quelled. The machine wins, and its power surpasses that of human beings. This requires the establishment of a new relationship between man and machine, suggesting the 'emergence of a new species' that does not belong to humans. The handling of the Promethean motif by Ex Machina through these various layers serves to enrich the narrative by compounding numerous classics into one motif and going further to introduce fresh elements by diverging from the common storyline. The significance of this study is to demonstrate the use of such multilayered motifs and, through this, the expansion of narrative through it in specific cases.

  • Speech database is an indispensable part of speech research. Speech database is necessary to use in speech research and development processes, and to evaluate performances of various speech-processing systems. To use speech database for common purpose, it is necessary to design utterance list that has all the possible phonetical events in minimal number of words, and is independent of tasks. To meet those restrictions this paper extracts PBW set from large text corpus. Speech database that was constructed using PBW set for utterance list and its properties are described in this paper.

  • Novels includes various character names, depending on the genre and the spatio-temporal background of the novels and the nationality of characters. Besides, characters and their names in a novel are created by the author's pen and imagination. As a result, any proper noun dictionary cannot include all kind of character names which have been created or will be created by authors. In addition, since Korean does not have capitalization feature, character names in Korean are harder to detect than those in English. Fortunately, however, Korean has postpositions, such as "-ege" and "hante", used by a sentient being or an animate object (noun). We call such postpositions as animate postpositions in this paper. In a previous study, the authors manually selected character names by referencing both Wikipedia and well-known people dictionaries after utilizing Korean morpheme analyzer, a proper noun dictionary, postpositions (e.g., "-ga", "-eun", "-neun", "-eui", and "-ege"), and titles (e.g., "buin"), in order to extract social networks from three novels translated into or written in Korean. But, the precision, recall, and F-measure rates of character identification are not presented in the study. In this paper, we evaluate the quantitative contribution of animate postpositions to character identification from novels, in terms of precision, recall, and F-measure. The results show that utilizing animate postpositions is a valuable and powerful tool in character identification without a proper noun dictionary from novels translated into or written in Korean.

  • A visual novel, a type of digital content combining novel and game, was designed as hypermedia which includes various media, for instance, image, sound, and video. The narrative of visual novel contains multimedia elements and highlights multi-scenario structures based on hypertext. Prior to creating visual novel scenario, a writer should thoroughly consider two main points. First of all, the scenario should cover the multimedia features of visual novel. Secondly, the scenario should be structured as a multi-scenario providing with performativity to players for interaction with readers. This study examines the influence of changes in platforms on visual novel scenario adjusted to mobile environment. It would provide an opportunity to understand how storytelling changes and adapts to rapid transformation of digital media contents.

  • The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is an approach and a philosophy that is used to develop specific management techniques. It was first popularized by the novel, The Goal, that applied the principles to operations management. Since 1997 it has found application in two areas within project management. The first application is scheduling of a single project to reduce project duration and simplify project control. there is a further application to allocate resources that are shared by concurrent project. It is the objective of this paper to explore the fundamentals of critical chain and to pursue an application of critical chain method to construction project by a case study.

  • Novels include various character names, depending on the genre and the spatio-temporal background of the novels and the nationality of characters. Besides, characters and their names in a novel are created by the author's pen and imagination. As a result, any proper noun dictionary cannot include all kinds of character names. In addition, the novels translated into Korean have character names consisting of two or more nouns (such as "Harry Potter"). In this paper, we propose a method to extract noun phrases for character names and to cluster the noun phrases into coreferents for the same character name. In the extraction of noun phrases, we utilize KKMA morpheme analyzer and CPFoAN character identification tool. In clustering the noun phrases into coreferents, we construct a directed graph with the character names extracted by CPFoAN and the extracted noun phrases, and then we create name sets for characters by traversing connected subgraphs in the directed graph. With four novels translated into Korean, we conduct a survey to evaluate the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method will be useful for speaker identification as well as for constructing the social network of characters.

  • The trend of making film from the comic source, which is a prototype of so-called media mix, is indeed a different phenomenon from the traditional ones from novel or play sources. Historically comics are recently adapted to film although they have narratives and continuity of images. It is due to the lack of social conception of comics genre and extension of imagination that is a characteristics of the comics. However, it is conspicuous that comics has been a source of film along with the development of technology of visual image reproduction and the trend of enlarging reproduction of popular media image. Since comics can provide narratives and he visual sense for film making, these trend will be continued and more vivid.
