  • Nine copper(Ⅱ) oxyanion, and mixed oxyanion complexes that have four- or five-coordinate geometries around copper(Ⅱ) centers were derived from sparteine copper(Ⅱ) dinitrate precursor [Cu($C_{15}$$H_{26}$N2)(NO3)2]. The precursor complex undergoes an anion exchange with various oxyanions, and an interchange reaction with other sparteine copper(Ⅱ) complexes. The [Cu($C_{15}$$H_{26}$N2)(CH3CO2)2] also undergoes "halogen atom abstraction" reaction with CCl4 to produce the mixed anion complex [Cu($C_{15}$$H_{26}$N2)(CH3CO2)Cl]. The whole set of prepared complexes has been used for the comparative electrochemical and spectroscopic studies.

  • A mercury ion-sensitive carbon-paste electrode (CPE) was constructed with l-sparteine. Mercury (II) ion was chemically deposited by the complexation with l-sparteine onto the CPE. The surface of CPEs was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and anodic stripping voltammetry in an acetate buffer solution, separately. Exposure of CPEs to acid solution could regenerate surface and reuse it for deposition. In 5 deposition/measurement/regeneration cycle, the response was reproducible and in licnear up to $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-6}$ M with linear sweep voltammetry. In case of using the differential pulse technique, we have obtained the linear response up to $7.0 {\times}10^{-7}$ M with relative standard deviation of ${\pm}5.1$%. The detection limit was $5.0{\times}10^{-7}$ M for 20 minutes of the deposition. We have investigated the interference effect of various metal ions, which are expected to form the complex with ligand. Silver (I) ion of these has interfered with the analysis of Hg (II) ions. However, pretreatment of the silver (I) ion with potassium chloride led to no interference on the analysis of mercury ions in aqueous solution.

  • A cobalt(II) ion-selective carbon-paste electrode (CPE) was constructed with ${\iota}$-sparteine. Cobalt(II) ion in aqueous solution was chemically deposited through the complexation with ${\iota}$-sparteine onto the CPE. The surface of CPEs were characterized by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry in an acetate buffer solution, separately. Exposure of the CPEs to an acid solution could regenerate surface to reuse it for the deposition. In more than 5 deposition / measurement / regeneration cycles, the response was reproducible and linear up to $5.0{\times}10^{-6}$M with linear sweep voltammetry. The peaks at 0.17V / 0.27V were correspond to the redox of Co(II)-SP complex deposited on CPE. The anodic peak of which appeared after scan over the cathodic peak of 0.17 V to more negative scan. In case of using the differencial pulse voltammetry (DPV), we have obtained the linear response $2.0{\times}10^{-7}$M with relative standard deviation ${\pm}5.6%$. The detection limit was $1.0{times}10^{-7}$M for 20 minutes of the deposition. We have also investigated the interference effect of various metal ions, which are expected to form the complex with the ligand on the electrode.

  • Rhomobifoline and 5,6-dehydrolupanine were isolated for the frist time from the leaves and stems of A. foetida L. indigenous to Saudil Arabia. In addition, five other alkaloids, previously identified in A, foetidia L., namely N-methylcytisine, sparteine, anagyrine, lupanine and cytisine, were isolated. The isolated alkaloids were characterized by UV, $^1-NMR,{\;}^{13}H-NMR,{\;}^{13}C-NMR{\;}and{\;}Mass{\;}spectral{\;}data.{\;}^{13}C-NMR$ data of rhombifoline and 5,6-dehydroupanine are reported for the first time.

  • Electrochemical behaviors of optically active sparteine-Cu(II) dihalide complexes were investigated by polarography and cyclic voltammetry (CV). These Cu(II) complexes are rather easier to be reduced to Cu(I) states when comparison is made with other nonplaner copper complexes, We have assigned the CV peaks and polarographic waves related to the redox processes for these complexes. We could also observe the exchange reaction of Cu(II) ion in the complex with mercury metal in the cell having mercury pool. The redox mechanism of these complelxes is as follows; The 1st wave appeared at +0.47 V/+0.65 V corresponds to the reaction of $SpCuX_2+ e{\rightleftarrow}SpCuX_{2^-}$ and the 2nd one at +0.26 V/+0.21 V does the reaction of $SpCuX_{2 ^-} +e{\rightleftarrow}SpCuX_2^{2-}$. The 3rd one at -0.35 V/-0.27 V is dueto the reduction of mercury complex formed via exchange reaction. Where, X is chloride ion.

  • The rates of aquation of sparteine cobalt(II) halide and sparteine copper(II) halide were investigated in the citrate buffer solutions. The aquation of cobalt(II) complexes proceeds via D-mechanism and the catalytic effect of halide ions is not observed. The aquation of copper(II) complexes proceeds via $I_d$-mechanism and is catalyzed by the presence of cyanide and halide ions, and the aquation rate is pH dependent. The different mechanistic behavior of cobalt(II) complexes from corresponding copper(II) complexes seems to be attributed to the weakness of Co-N bond in the coordination sphere.

  • The mechanism for electrochemical oxidation of natural alkaloid, ${\iota}$-sparteine (SP) was studied in acetonitrile solvent. The cyclic voltammogram of SP shows two irreversible anodic peaks at +0.75 V and +1.45 V vs. Ag/AgCl (0.1M AgNO$_2$ in acetonitrile) electrode. Coulometry reveals that the number of electrons involved in each oxidation peaks is in the range of 1.2∼1.3 respectively. Neutral imine radical was produced by fast deprotonation of SP radical cation formed by oxidation of one nitrogen atom in SP. Two pathways are possible for the reaction of the neutral radical: Due to the disproportionation of the radical, SP and enamine were mainly produced. Also, the 1,2-dehydrosparteinium cation was formed as minor product through the second one electron transfer oxidation of this radical. The (+)-lupanine was produced by treatment of sparteinium cation with potassium hydroxide. We have isolated and confirmed the electrolysis products using IR, GC-MS, UV-Vis, and thin-layer spectroelectrochemical method.

  • Mechanistic studies on the metal-exchange reactions of sparteine copper(II) dichloride [$SpCuCl_2$] with Hg(II) ion and Hg(0) metal have been carried out with the aid of Cyclic Voltammetry and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The metal exchange reaction of $SpCuCl_2$ with both Hg(II) ion and Hg(0) metal follows pseudo-first order kinetics. Rate constants and activation parameters of metal exchange reaction have been evaluated and reported. Experimental results indicate that the rate determining step for the exchange reaction is the cleavage of Cu(II)-N bond in the transient binuclear complex of Cu(II) and mercury(II) bound to sparteine ligand.

  • Asymmetric [2,3]-Wittig rearrangements of allyl propargyl ethers in hexane were performed in the presence of s-butyllithium and (-)-${\alpha}$-isosparteine which is a $C_2$-symmetric chiral ligand for the alkyllithium reagent. The reactions of (Z)-or (E)-allyl 3-trimethylsilylpropargyl ethers at -78$^{\circ}C$ showed good diastereoselectivities (74-100%) and moderate enantioselectivities (29-71%). The absolute configurations of the rearrangement products were determined by the corresponding Mosher's esters. It was found that (-)-${\alpha}$ -isosparteine induced (R) configuration at the hydroxy carbon and syn stereochemistry more favorably. The possible transition state is discussed.
