Comparison of Fragrance and Chemical Composition of Essential Oils in Gom-chewi (Ligularia fischeri) and Handaeri Gom-chewi (Ligularia fischeri var. spicifoprmis) (곰취(Ligularia fischeri)와 한대리곰취(Ligularia fischeri var. spicifoprmis) 정유의 향취 및 향기성분 비교)

  • This study was conducted to compare fragrance and volatile chemicals of essential oils in Gom-chewi (Ligularia fischeri) and Handaeri Gom-chewi (Ligularia fischeri var. spicifoprmis). Essential oils were extracted by steam distillation of leaves of Gom-chewi (GC) and Handaeri Gom-chewi (HGC), after which samples were collected by solid-phase micro extraction and the compositions of the essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The yields of the essential oils in GC and HGC were 0.12% and 0.04%, respectively, and the threshold levels of the essential oils in GC and HGC were 0.01% and 0.1%, respectively. There were 19 constituents of the essential oil of Gom-chewi: 14 carbohydrates, 4 alcohols, and 1 acetate, and the major constituents were L-${\beta}$-pinene (36.02%), D-limonene (25.64%), ${\alpha}$-pinene (24.85%) and ${\beta}$-phellandrene (5.39%). In the essential oil of HGC, 25 constituents were identified: 17 carbohydrates, 4 alcohols, 3 acetates, and 1 N-containing compound, and the major constituents of HGC were D-limonene (39.74%), L-${\beta}$-pinene (35.43%) and ${\alpha}$-pinene (11.94%). The minor constituents of HGC were ${\rho}$-cymene, ${\gamma}$-muurolene, ${\gamma}$-cadinene, germacrene D, ingol 12-acetate and butyl 9,12,15-octadecatriene and nimorazole were not identified in the GC essential oil. Overall, the results showed that the fragrance and chemical compositions of essential oils in GC and HGC differed, suggesting that both essential oils could be used for the development of perfumery products.

Chemical Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of Cone Volatile oil of Cupressus macrocarpa Hartwig from Nilgiris, India

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the various chemical components present in the cone volatile oil of Cupressus macrocarpa and also determine its antimicrobial activity. Totally 13 compounds were identified with 99.99% by GC-MS analysis. The major compounds identified were terpinene-4-ol (19.42%), dinopol (15.63%), ${\alpha}$-pinene (13.58%), and ${\beta}$-pinene (12.16%). The antimicrobial activity was carried out for the oil and a 2% cream formulation using cup plate method by measuring the zone of inhibition. The gram positive organisms used were Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus megaterium, and Bacillus cogulans. The gram negative organisms used were Escherichia coli, Kleibseilla pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Salmonella typhi. In vitro antifungal studies were also carried out by using organisms, Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus, Trichoderma lignorum and Cryptococcus neoformans. The standard drugs used were penicillin ($100{\mu}g/mL$), gentamycin ($100{\mu}g/mL$) and griseofulvin ($100{\mu}g/mL$) for gram positive bacteria, gram negative bacteria and fungi respectively. Both oil and cream formulation showed good activity against fungi than bacteria. This study is being reported for the first time on cone volatile oil of this plant.

Fumigant Toxicity of the Constituents of Coriander Oil, Coriandum sativum against Blattella germanica (바퀴에 대한 Coriander Oil (Coriandum sativum) 성분의 훈증효과)

  • Essential oil of five plants were screened for fumigation toxicity against Blattella germanica male adults. Among them, coriander oil showed $100\%$ fumigation toxicity against B. germanica male adults at 20 and $10{\mu}{\ell}/{\ell}$ (air) dose, respectively. Through the constituent analysis using GC and GC/MS, we confirmed that main constituents of coriander oil were ${\alpha}$-pinene ($6.1\%$), camphene ($1.1\%$), ${\beta}$-pinene ($0.5\%$), ${\beta}$-myrcene ($0.8\%$), limonene ($2.5\%$), ${\gamma}$-terpinene ($4.5\%$), ${\rho}$-cymene ($1.8\%$), ${\alpha}$-terpinolene ($0.5\%$), camphor ($4.9\%$), linalool ($70.5\%$), ${\alpha}$-tepineol ($0.7\%$), geranyl acetate ($2.8\%$) and geraniol ($1.4\%$). Among them, ${\gamma}$-terpinene and geranyl acetate showed $100\%$ fumigation toxicity at $10{\mu}{\ell}/{\ell}$ (air) dose, respectively. It can be concluded that coriander oil is potential control agents against B. germanica.

Volatile Flavor Components of Wild Chopi (Zanthoxylum piperitum De Candolle) Leaf (야생 초피(Zanthoxylum piperitum De Candolle)잎의 향기성분)

  • Wild Chopi leaves were harvested near Chounghwa Mt. Sangju city in Kyungpook province. Chopi leaves were dried naturally and crushed with and without blanching. From mechanical analysis(GC). fifty five peaks were identified as volatile materials in no blanching leaf. Among the fifty five peaks, twenty three peaks were identified as hydrocarbones(dodecane, sabinene, myrcene etc.), ten peaks as alcohols (isobutylalcohol. cis-pentenol, 1-pentenol, 1-penten-3-ol etc.), seven peaks as aldehydes (3-methylbua-tanal, hexanal, 2,6-dimethyl hept-5-al etc.), four peaks as ketones(3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 2-nonanone, 2-undecanone, 2-tridecanone) and six peaks as esters ( cis-3-hexenyl acetate, linalyl acetate. citronellyl acetate, nervy acetate etc.). Other peaks were founded as 3-cyano-2,5-dimethylpyrazine, dimethyl sulfide, chloroform, 1,8 cineole. Thirty five peaks were identified as volatile materials in blanching leaf. Twenty peaks were identified as hydrocarbones(1,1-oxybis-ethane, $\alpha$-pinene, camphene. myrcene, $\beta$-phellan-drene, $\beta$-caryophyllene etc.), as alcohol(L-linalool, (-)-isopulgerol, $\alpha$-terpineol. citronellol etc.), as aldehydes(nonanal, citronellal), as ketones(2-undecanone, 2-tridecanone etc.) and as esteres(citronellyl acetate. cis-3-hexenyl acetate, neryl acetate etc.). Other peaks were found as 3-cyano-2,5-dimethyl-pyrazine. The amount of volatile materials such as $\alpha$-pinene, myrcene, $\beta$-phellanderene, L-linalool, citronellal, citronellyl acetate, $\beta$-caryophyllene were detected abundantly among the volatile materials.

침엽수로부터 배출되는 테르펜의 지역별 배출특성에 관한 연구

  • 우리나라에서 자생하는 소나무속의 침엽수 중 가장 대표적인 수종은 소나무이며, 리기다소나무가 그 뒤를 잇는다. 이 두 수종을 대상으로 테르펜의 배출속도와 물질별 구성비율을 비교하여 본 결과, 소나무와 리기다의 유사점은 $\alpha$-pinene, myrcene, $\beta$-phellandrene이 주요하게 나타났다. 리기다소나무의 경우에는 소나무에서 보다 $\beta$-pinene이 다소 크게 나타났으나, 지역별로는 테르펜의 구성비 차이가 거의 없었다. 삼림으로부터 방출되는 테르펜의 배출특성을 연구하기 위해서는 보다 많은 수종에 대한 광범위한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

Composition of Free Amino Acids and Essential Oils in Root of Anthriscus sylvestylis (전조 뿌리의 유리 아미노산과 정유 성분 조성)

  • The study was carried out to find compositions of proximate components, free amino acid, and essential oils from root of Anthriscus sylvestylis. Proximate component contents were 7.69% for protein, 1.74% for fat, 2.44% for fiber, and 3.76% for ash. Extract content was 27.68% in fresh root. The compositions of free amino acids consisted 16 kinds. Phenylalanine content was the highest in composition of free amino acids. The essential oils of the root of Anthriscus sylvestylis was examined. $\alpha$-pinene, campreol, ,$\beta$-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, phellandrene, $\alpha$-terpinolene, d-limone, ${\gamma}$-terpinene, p-cymene, $\alpha$-terpinolene, carboxaldehyde, 3-cyc1ohexen-l-carboxaldehyde, 2-nonenal, isobornyl acetate, 4-terpineol, $\beta$-bisabolene, cis-piperitol, p-cymen-8-ol, BHT, methyl eugenol and 2-methoxy-4-vinyl-phenol were identified from the diethylether layers. Recovery yield of essential oils of Anthriscus sylvestylis of root was 0.58%. As a result, it was considered that the plant is worthy of cultivating as spice and medicinal crops.

Monoterpenoid of Korean Valerian Roots (국산 길초근의 Monoterpenoid)

  • Essential oils were separated by steam distillation from the roots of four species of the genus Valeriana and subjected to gas chromatography to screen monoterpenic hydrocarbons and related components. The amounts of the common components were contained in the following order: camphene, ${\alpha}-pinene$, bornyl-, myrtenyl isovalerate, myrtenylacetate and ${\beta}-pinene$, and small amounts of terpineol and terpinylacetate were also contained. Of the four species, the root of Valeriana fauriei $B_{RIQUET}$ var. dasycarpa $H_{ARA}$ contained the largest amounts of these components and the root of V. dageletiana $N_{AKAI}$ ex $M_{AEKAWA}$ the least. Since the root of V. dageletiana contained for less amounts of pinene, camphene and bornylacetate and none of dipentene and terpineol, this plant appears to be distinguished from the other three species.

Comparative Analysis of Chemical Compositions and Antimicrobial Activities of Essential Oils from Abies holophylla and Abies koreana

  • The chemical compositions and antibacterial and antifungal activities of essential oils extracted from Abies holophylla and A. koreana were investigated. GC-MS analysis revealed that 38 compounds comprised 95.88% of the A. holophylla essential oil, with the main components being bicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol(28.05%), ${\delta}3$-carene(13.85%), $\alpha$-pinene(11.68%), camphene(10.41%), dl-limonene(7.61%), $\beta$-myrcene(7.11%), trans-caryophyllene(5.36%), and $\alpha$-bisabolol(3.67%). In the essential oil from A. koreana, 36 compounds comprised 98.67% of the oil, and the main compounds were bornyl ester(41.79%), camphene(15.31%), $\alpha$-pinene(11.19%), dl-limonene(8.58%), fenchyl acetate(5.55%), and $\alpha$-terpinene(2.29%). Both essential oils showed great potential of antibacterial activity against several bacteria tested, in the range of 2.2-$8.8{\mu}g$ per disc by the agar disc diffusion method, and minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) values of 5.5-21.8 mg/ml by the microdilution method. Both oils showed very effective antifungal activities toward all pathogenic strains tested, including Candida glabrata, with MIC values in the range of 0.5-2.2 mg/ml. As a whole, A. koreana oil showed better antibacterial and antifungal properties than A. holophylla oil.

Study on Natural VOC Emission Rates and Characteristics Emitted from Larix Leptoleis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Gordon (낙엽송으로부터 배출되는 자연 VOC 배출속도 및 배출특성 연구)

  • In order to investigate the compositions and the emission rates of monoterpenes emitted from coniferous trees, those from Larix leptoleis (Sieb, et Zucc.) Gordon were measured. In spring and summer, the major monoterpenes were ${\alpha}-terpinene,\;{\alpha}-pinene$, myrcene; however, ${\alpha}-pinene\;and\;{\alpha}-terpinene$ were most abundant in fall. The total mean monoterpene emission rates were $0.455\;({\mu}gC/gdw/hr)$ during the whole period. The higher monoterpene emission rates were found in fall compared to those in spring and summer. In addition, the slopes (${\beta}\;value$) between emission rate and temperature were two times lower in fall than those in spring and summer. It was also found that Larix leptoleis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Cordon had lower monoterpene emission rates than P. densiflora and P. rigida.

GC/MS Analysis of Volatile Constituents from Acanthopanax senticosus (가시오갈피나무의 정유성분 GC/MS 분석)

  • The chemical composition of the volatile constituents from the leaves, stems, and roots of Acanthopanax senticosus growing wild in Mt. Deok-Yu was determined by GC and GC/MS spectrometric analysis with the aid of NBS, Wiley Library and RI indice searches. The major constituents identified were ${\delta}-elemene\;(23.14%),\;{\beta}-elemene\;(5.59%),\;{\gamma}-cadinene\;(5.43%),\;and\;{\alpha}-bergamotene\;(28.54%)$ in the leaves, ${\alpha}-pinene\;(11.50%),\;{\delta}-elemene\;(17.62%),\;{\alpha}-bergamotene\;(27.21%)$, and bicycloheptane derivative (6.38%) in the stems, and ${\alpha}-pinene\;(21.90%)$, and (+)-aromadendrene (3.77%) in the roots.
