  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the pelvic compression belt (PCB) on the electromyography (EMG) activities of trunk muscles during sit-to-stand (SitTS), and stand-to-sit (StandTS) tasks. Twenty healthy subjects (7 men and 13 women) were recruited for this study. The subjects performed SitTS, and StandTS tasks, with and without a PCB. Surface EMG was used to record activity of the internal oblique (IO), external oblique (EO), rectus abdominis (RA), erector spinae (ES), and multifidus (MF) of the dominant limb. EMG activity significantly decreased in the RA (without the PCB, $8.34{\pm}6.04$ %maximal voluntary isometric contraction [%MVIC]; with the PCB, $7.64{\pm}5.11$ %MVIC), EO (without the PCB, $14.83{\pm}11.82$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $11.98{\pm}7.60$ %MVIC), MF (without the PCB, $21.74{\pm}7.76$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $18.50{\pm}8.04$ %MVIC), and ES (without the PCB, $18.39{\pm}7.16$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $16.63{\pm}6.31$ %MVIC) during the SitTS task and in the IO (without the PCB, $20.58{\pm}15.60$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $17.27{\pm}12.32$ %MVIlC), RA (without the PCB, $8.04{\pm}5.68$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $7.40{\pm}4.71$ %MVIC), EO (without the PCB, $13.29{\pm}8.80$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $11.24{\pm}6.14$ %MVIC), MF (without the PCB, $18.59{\pm}7.64$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $15.86{\pm}6.48$ %MVIC), and ES (without the PCB, $17.14{\pm}6.44$ %MVIC; with the PCB, $15.46{\pm}5.62$ %MVIC) during the StandTS task when a PCB was used (p<.05). In men the EMG activity of the MF significantly decreased during the SitTS task when a PCB was used (p<.05): in women, the EMG activity of the RA, EO, MF, and ES during the SitTS task and that of the EO, MF, and ES during the SitTS task significantly decreased when a PCB was used (p<.05). In addition, the rates of change in the EMG activity of each muscle differed significantly during the SitTS and StandTS tasks before and after the use of the PCB. However, the EMG activity did not significantly differ between the male and female subjects. These findings suggest that the PCB may contribute to the modification of activation patterns of the trunk muscles during SitTS, and StandTS tasks.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the optimal position among three manual muscle tested positions for upper trapezius in which to obtain an isolated upper trapezius EMG signal for the normalization of upper trapezius muscle EMG activity. A total of 28 healthy adult men participated in the experiment. The UT (upper trapezius) and LS (levator scapulae) muscle activities were measured using the TeleMyo 2400T and analyzed using MyoResearch software. The muscle activity of the US and LS was measured by performing three manual muscle test positions for the upper trapezius. The UT/LS ratio during the S-MVIC was 80.25 and was significantly higher than that during the T-MVIC (76.50; p = 0.011) and the C-MVIC (60.95; p < 0.001). And, the UT/LS ratio during the T-MVIC and was significantly higher than that during the C-MVIC (p < 0.001). Based on the results of present study, we suggest a switch from T-MVIC to S-MVIC for the independent normalization reliability of upper trapezius EMG activity. The UT muscle strength or normalization test using S-MVIC will be able to measure muscle strength or activity of UT compared to previous measurement methods.

  • PURPOSE: This study compared the changes in the range of motion (ROM ) on the knee joint according to three different isometric contraction intensities when applying Evjenth - Hamberg stretching (EHS) to the hamstring muscles of healthy subjects. METHODS: Forty eight healthy subjects aged between 20 and 39 years were allocated randomly to four groups; performing EHS at 10% maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) group, EHS at 50% MVIC group, EHS at 100% MVIC group, and control group (CG) pre-, and post-intervention. The flexibility of the hamstring muscles was evaluated using a digital goniometer for measuring the knee joint ROM motion. A Chattanooga stabilizer was used to adjust the MVIC intensity by 10%, 50%, and 100%, respectively. RESULTS: These results show that the pre- and post-intervention knee joint ROM were significantly different in all four groups (p<.05). The post-intervention knee joint ROM showed a significant difference between the 100% MVIC group and non-MVIC group (p<.05). The knee joint ROM difference between the pre- and post-interventions was similar in the 10% MVIC and 50% MVIC groups but significant differences were observed among the other groups (p<.05). CONCLUSION: EHS of the hamstring muscles was effective in improving the knee joint ROM with an isometric contraction intensity of 10%, 50%, or 100% MVIC, and of these, 100% MVIC was most effective.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes in skeletal muscle architecture and qualitative properties by muscle contraction force when neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of 50% MVIC was applied. Sixteen subjects (8 male, 8 female) without neuromuscular disease volunteered to participate in the study. All subjects were divided into two subgroups: control (no electrical stimulation) group and 50% maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) group. NMES training program was performed in the calf muscle three times a week for 10 weeks. Before and after the experiments, the MVIC of ankle plantar flexor was measured by the use of dynamometer, and the ultrasonography in the gastrocnemius medialis muscle was measured. The following results were obtained; MVIC was significantly increased in the electrical stimulation groups. Pennation angle, muscle density, and white area index also considerably changed in the electrical stimulation groups. In conclusion, the NMES training of 50% MVIC, comparative low level, improved the skeletal muscle architecture and the qualitative properties as well as the muscle contraction force.

  • The aim of this study was to effect of muscle activity on muscle architectural of medial gastrocnemius in chronic stroke patient based on ankle joint degree. The subjects of this study were 10 chronic stroke patients modified Ashworth scale(MAS) 2. Ultrasonographic and dynamometer was measured during resting and maximum voluntary isometric contraction(MVIC) on muscle thickness, pennation angle, fascicle length, MVIC. Result from analysis showed that muscle thickness was thinner in the paretic side than in the non-paretic side(p<.001) and the more plantarflexion increased, the thinner muscle thickness became. And at the time of resting rather than of MVIC significant(p<.001). Result from analysis showed that penneation angle was smaller in the paretic side than in the non-paretic side(p<.001) and the more plantarflexion increased, the larger pennation became. And at the time of resting rather than of MVIC significant(p<.001). Result from analysis showed that fascicle was shorter in the paretic side than in the non-paretic side(p<.001) and the more plantarflexion increased, the shorter fascicle length became. And at the time of resting rather than of MVIC significant(p<.001). The results of this study showed that effect of muscle activity on muscle architectural of medial gastrocnemius in chronic stroke patient based on ankle joint degree. Therefore, Ultrasonographic evaluation of chronic stroke patients according ankle joint degree and muscle activity in the clinical diagnosis and therapy is considered a very useful data.
