  • YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$ samples with different amounts of $Y_2$BaCuO$_{5}$ were prepared by MPMG (Melt Powder Melt Growth) method. The effects on the size of initial particles and Ag addition for $Y_2$BaCuO$_{5}$ distribution in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{x}$ were invesgated. The samples prepared by the melting process usually have large grains up to several ㎣ and precipitates of $Y_2$BaCuO$_{5}$. The distribution of the $Y_2$BaCuO$_{5}$ particles in the samples depends on the size of initial particles and the amounts of Ag addition.Ag addition.

  • Distribution of $Y_2BaCuO_5$ (211) Particles within $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}/$ (123) grains of melt infiltration processed YBCO oxides was investigated. Processing parameters were a temperature, atmosphere (air and $O_2$) and initial 211 size. The 211 particles were distributed randomly within the 123 grains when the initial 211 size was large, while they made x-like pattern and/or butterfly-like patterns when the 211 size was small. The 211 patterns were more clearly observed in the samples prepared at higher temperatures and under $O_2$ atmosphere. The 211 distribution was explained in terms of the interfacial energy relationship among the solid, particle and melt.

  • We have studied the effect of platinum addition on the supercon ducting properties of YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$ (123) compound and elucidated the mechanism of fine dispersion of $Y_2$BaCu $O_{5}$(211) particles in YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$ superconductor prepared by melting method from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, BaCu $O_2$ and CuO-rich phase unreacted during the peritecitc reaction markedly decreased by the 211 powder addition. The 211 particle of Pt-fee sintered samples exhibited 8~10$\mu$m in size, but in 1wt%Pt-added sample, 211 particles were finely dispersed in 123 matrix and the size of 211 particle was about 1~2$\mu$m. And, the critical temperature( $T_{c. zero}$) of Pt doped samples was 91.5K and the transport critical current density ( $J_{c}$) of Pt-doped samples was much more than 10$^4$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The high $J_{c}$ and fine dispersion of 211 particles of Pt doped YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-x}$ superconductor are attributed to $Ba_4$CuP $t_2$ $O_{8}$ compounds formed during the partial melting, which were considered als nucleation sites of 211 particles, rather than Pt inself.han Pt inself.

  • $Y_{1}Ba_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta}$계에서 211상의 성장거동을 관찰하기 위하여 123시편을 $1100^{\circ}C$에서 유지시간을 변화시켜 MgO다결정 기판과 MgO 단결정 기판위에 놓고 소결시킨 후 공냉하였다. 211입자는 유지 시간이 증가함에 따라 성장하였으며MgO단결정 기판보다 MgO다결정 기판을 사용했을때 더 큰 성장을 보였다. CuO양을 변화시키면서 만든 $Y_{2}Ba_{1+X}Cu_{3}O_{5+\delta}$ 시편에서 211입자는 CuO양이 증가함에 따라 조대해졌으며 0.6mol CuO가 더 첨가된 시편에서 가장 큰 211입자가 관찰되었다. $Y_{2}Ba_{1+X}Cu_{3}O_{5+\delta}$시편에서 211입자는 아주 미세하고 균일하게 분포되었다. $SnO_{2}$첨가로 인한 211입자의 성장억제 효과는 ($BaCuO_{2}$+ CuO)액상에서보다 CuO액상에서 더 크게 나타났다.

  • The formation of oxide superconducting phase fabrication of superconducting wire materials and fabrication of precise superconducting material were studied for developing superconductor application technique. The $ZrO_2$ addition reduced the particle size $BaZrO_3$ trapped in the matrix after the sintering growth. The added $ZrO_2$ was converted to fine particles of $BaZrO_3$ which is the conventional sintering temperature for YBaCuO, $Y_2Ba_1Cu_1O_5$ and CuO are formed as by products of the reaction between $ZrO_2$ and YBaCuO phase. The formation of highly $BaZrO_3$ particle appears to be responsible for the refinement of $BaZrO_3$ phase after the citric acid sintering process.

Flux Pinning Enhancement in Melt- Processed $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_y$ Superconductors

  • We have studied the superconducting properties and flux pinning enhancement of $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_y$ [(YNS)-1.8] composite oxides by melt growth process in air. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.5}Nd_{0.25}Sm_{0.25})_2BaCuO_5$ [(YNS)211] nonsuperconducting particles were uniformly dispersed in large (YNS)123 superconducting matrix. The sample showed a sharp superconducting transition at 91 K. The magnetization measurements of the (YSN)-1.8 sample exhibited the enhanced flux pinning, compared with $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ (Y-123) sample without Sm and Nd.

  • With an aim of comparison, single grain Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) bulk superconductors were fabricated using a liquid infiltration growth (LIG) process and a conventional melt growth (MTG) process with top seeding. The MTG process uses an $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$(Y123) powder as a precursor, while the LIG process uses $Y_2BaCuO_5(Y211)/Ba_3Cu_5O_8(Y035)$ pre-forms. The growth of a single Y123 domain on the top seed was successful in the both processes. Different feature between the two processes is the interior microstructure regarding the critical current density ($J_c$). The LIG-processed YBCO sample showed a lower porosity, more uniform distribution of Y211 particles and the enhanced Y211 refinement compared to the conventional MTG process. The $J_c$ improvement in the LIG process is attributed to the dispersion of finer Y211 particles as well as lower porosity within the Y123 superconducting matrix.

대면적 단결정 Gd1.5Ba2Cu3O7-y 벌크 초전도체의 초전도 특성 (Superconducting Properties of Large Single Grain Gd1.5Ba2Cu3O7-y Bulk Superconductors)

  • Large single grain $Gd_{1.5}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Gd1.5) bulk superconductors were fabricated by a top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) process using an $NdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ seed. The seeded Gd1.5 powder compacts with a diameter of 50 mm were subjected to the heating cycles of a TSMG process. After the TSMG process, the diameter of the single grain Gd1.5 compact was reduced to 43 mm owing to the volume contraction during the heat treatment. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of the top surface of the single grain Gd1.5 sample was as high as 93.5 K. The critical current densities ($J_cs$) at 77 K and 1T and 1.5 T were in ranges of 25,200-43,900 $A/cm^2$ and 10,000-23,000 $A/cm^2$, respectively. The maximum attractive force at 77 K of the sample field-cooled using an Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet (surface magnetic field of 0. 527 T) was 108.3 N; the maximum repulsive force of the zero field-cooled sample was 262 N. The magnetic flux density of the sample field-cooled at 77 K was 0.311T, which is approximately 85% of the applied magnetic field of 0.375 T. Microstructure investigation showed that many $Gd_2BaCuO_5$ (Gd211) particles of a few ${\mu}m$ in size, which are flux pinning sites of Gd123, were trapped within the $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Gd123) grain; unreacted $Ba_3Cu_5O_8$ liquid and Gd211 particles were present near the edge regions of the single grain Gd1.5 bulk compact.

  • We have systematically studied the superconducting properties and flux pinning enhancement of $(Y_{0.33}Sm_{0.33}Nd_{0.33})\;Ba_2Cu_3O_y$ [(YSN)-123] composite oxides by melt growth process in air. A sample prepared by this method showed well-textured microstructure, and $(Y_{0.33}Sm_{0.33}Nd_{0.33})\;BaCuO_5$ [(YSN)211] nonsuperconducting particles were uniformly dispersed in large (YSN) 123 superconducting matrix.   • The milling effects of a precursor $Y_2BaCuO_5$ (Y211) powder having 1 wt.% $CeO_2$ on the microstructure and critical current density ($J_c$) of liquid infiltration growth (LIG) processed $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}$ (Y-123) bulk superconductors were investigated. The microstructure analysis revealed that the Y211 size in the final Y-123 products decreased with increasing the milling time and a relatively high density and uniform distribution of Y211 inclusions were observed in the sample prepared using 8 h milled powder. However, the unexpected Y211 particles coarsening was observed from the 4 h milled sample which was further increased for 10 h milled sample. Critical current density ($J_c$) of the LIG processed Y-123 bulk superconductors was found to be dependent on the milling time of the Y211 precursor powder. The $J_c$ increased with the increase of milling time and reached up to a maximum at 8 h in the self field while 10 h milled sample showed lower $J_c$ at the same field which might be due to the exaggerated growth and non-uniform distribution of Y211 particles.
