Modeling of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3 in GGA+U formalism

  • The electronic structure and various physical properties of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3 have been studied from the framework of Ab-initio by the all-electron projector-augmented-wave (PAW) method, as implemented VASP (Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package). The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with effective U (Ueff) has been used to explain the strong on-site Coulomb repulsion among the localized Ce 4f electrons. The dependence of selected observables of these materials on the Ueff parameter has been scrutinized. The studied properties contain lattice constants, density of states, and reaction energies of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3. For CeO2 and PrO2, the GGA(PBE)+U results are in good agreement with experimental data whereas for the computational calculationally more demanding Ce2O3 and Pr2O3 both approaches give comparable accuracy. This results represent that by choosing an appropriate Ueff it is possible to reliably describe structural and electronic properties of CeO2, Ce2O3, PrO2, and Pr2O3, which enables modeling of oxygen reduction reaction processes involving ceria-based materials.

M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) 촉매상에서 수소 제조를 위한 메탄의 부분산화반응에서 La의 효과 (Effect of La in Partial Oxidation of Methane to Hydrogen over M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) Catalysts)

  • 고정층 상압 유통식 반응기를 사용하여 M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = La, Ce, Y) 촉매상에서 메탄의 부분 산화 반응을 수행하여 수소의 수율을 조사하였다. XRD 분석으로 반응 전과 반응 후의 환원된 La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 촉매의 결정상 특성피크를 조사하였고 FESEM과 EDS 분석으로 La, Ni, Ce 금속 입자가 촉매 표면상에 균일하게 분포하고 있음을 조사하였다. XPS 분석으로 촉매 표면상에 O2-, O22-의 산소와 Ce3+, Ce4+, La3+, Ni2+ 등의 이온이 존재함을 알 수 있었고, Ni(5)/AlCeO3 촉매에 1 wt%의 La를 첨가하면 Ni2p3/2과 Ce3d5/2의 원자가 각각 52.7과 6.3%로 증가하였다. La(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 촉매상에서 수소의 수율은 89.1%이었으며, M(1)-Ni(5)/AlCeO3 (M = Ce, Y)보다 매우 우수하였다. AlCeO3이 산소와 반응하여 만들어진 CeO2의 Ce4+ 이온이 La3+로 치환됨으로서 격자에 산소 빈자리를 만들고 strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) 효과로 Ni 원자의 분산을 증가시켜 수소 수율를 향상시켰다.

Dependence of Phase Stability of Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal on Dopants

  • The effect of aliovalent dopants, $ Nb_2O_5$ and MnO, on the phase stability of 12 mol% ceria partially-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) polycrystals was studied. Both dopants (MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$) significantly increased the stability of the tetragonal zirconia phase (Mb temperature lower than liquid nitrogen temperature). The enhancement of the stability of the tetragonal phase in Ce-TZP doped with 1 mol% of Mno(Ce-TZP/MnO) andCe-TZP doped with 1 mol% of $ Nb_2O_5$(Ce-TZP/$ Nb_2O_5$) were explained by the significant reduction of the driving force, -${\Delta}$Gchem, for the tetragonal-to-mono-clinic phase transformation caused by the addition of MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$. The enhanced stability of the tetragonal phase in the Ce-TZP and Al2O3 composite (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$) is believed to be caused by smaller grain size, moderate reduction in the chemical driving force and increase in the strain energy barrier to the transformation. Mechanical properties of the Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ with (i) the same grain size and (ii) the same Mb temperature were examined by measuring stress-strain behavior in 3 point bending. The Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite doped with 1.3w% MnO (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO), which had the same grain size as the Ce-TZP and De-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ showed more transformation plasticity than either the Ce-TZP or the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite. The Ce-TZP wihch had the same Mb temperature as that of the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO did not show any transformation plasticity.

  • 수용성 ZrOCl2.8H2O, YCl3.6H2O 및 Ce(NO3)3.6H2O를 사용하여 공침법으로 다양한 조성의 Y2O3-CeO2-ZrO2 분말을 합성하고, 이들의 압분체를 1400, 150$0^{\circ}C$에서 2시간동안 공기 중에서 상압소결하였다. 2mol%Y2O3-ZrO2 조성의 140$0^{\circ}C$ 소결체는 강도(1003MPa)와 미세경도(12.6GPa) 면에서 제일 우수하였으나, 인성은 10mol%CeO2-ZrO2의 경우가 13.3MPa.m1/2로 제일 높았다. CeO2-ZrO2에Y2O3의 첨가는 소결체의 평균 결정입자의 크기를 감소시켰고, 이로 인하여 강도와 경도는 증가하지만 인성은 감소하였다. 반면에 Y2O3-ZrO3에 CeO2의 첨가는 수열분위기에서 장시간 저온시효동안 정방정상의 안정화를 향상시키는 효과를 나타내었다.

Effect of $Sb_2O_3$ on Solarization of Photosensitive Glasses Containing Ag and $CeO_2$

  • The relationship between the addition of Sb$_2$O$_3$ and the color difference by solarization in photosensitive glasses was investigated. Glasses containing CeO$_2$ and Sb$_2$O$_3$ simultaneously and glasses with only CeO$_2$ were changed reddish and yellowish respectively after exposing to ultra violet ray. Color difference between compositions was represented by dominant wavelength and purity. Since, in glasses containing CeO$_2$ and Sb$_2$O$_3$ simultaneously, Sb$_2$O$_3$ as reduction agent affected Ce$^3+$ ions to increase in glass and more Ce$^4+$ ions were induced than in glasses with only CeO$_2$ during UV irradiation, more electrons released by photo-ionization, which were color centers, were trapped by Ce$^4+$. In conclusion, the introduction of Sb$_2$O$_3$ to photosensitive glasses with CeO$_2$ resulted in the change of color center concentration in glasses and prevented the solarization of photosensitive glasses with CeO$_2$.

  • Sintering behavior and electrical properties of CeO$_2$ system were investigated as a function of the amount of Gd:$_2$O$_3$, and Sm$_2$O$_3$, addition. Doped CeO$_2$ consisted of a homogeneous solid solution of the cubic fluorite structure within the amount of addition from 0 mol% to 15 mol%. Grain growth rate of Gd$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ was much smaller than that of pure CeO$_2$, while densification rate was considerably larger. Thus doped CeO$_2$ showed a higher density than pure CeO$_2$. The electrical conductivity of Ce$_1$-$_{x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_1$-$_{x}$/2 was increased up to x = 0.2. However, with further increasing dopant concentrations, the magnitude of the conductivity was found to decrease remarkably. The ionic conductivity value obtained at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 mol% Sm$_2$O$_3$-doped CeO$_2$ electrolyte was 4.6${\times}$10$^{-2}$ S$.$$cm^{-1}$ /.EX> /.

유도결합 C1$_2$/CF$_4$/Ar 플라즈마를 이용한 CeO$_2$ 박막 식각후 표면반응 (Surface Reactions after the Etching of CeO$_2$ Thin films using Inductively Coupled C1$_2$/CF$_4$/Ar Plasmas)

  • 본 연구에서는 ICP 식각장비에서 700 W의 RF전력과 -200 vo1t의 dc 바이어스 전압 및 15 mTorr의 반응로 압력에서 $Ar/CF_2$ 혼합가스에 $C1_2$가스를 첨가하면서 $CeO_2$ 박막을 식각하였다 최대식각 속도는 10%의 $C1_2$ 가스를 첨가하였을 시에 250 $\AA$/min이었고, 이 조건에서 SBT에 대한 식각 선택비는 0.4이었다. XPS를 이용하여 식각된 $CeO_2$ 박막의 표면반응을 검토하였다. Ce 피크는 대부분 $CeO_2$또는 $Ce_2O_3$형태로 Ce-O 결합상태임을 관찰할 수 있었다. 대부분의 Cl 피크는 CeClx 또는 $Ce_x/O_yCl_z$ 형태로 Ce 원자와 결합하고 있었다

마이크로파를 이용한 황산세륨으로 개질화 된 SiC/Al2O3 촉매의 CF4 분해 특성 (Decomposition Characteristics of CF4 by SiC/Al2O3 Modified with Cerium Sulfate Using Microwave System)

  • 마이크로파 열분해 시스템을 이용하여 Ce 담지량이 다른 알루미나 촉매의 $CF_4$ 분해에 대한 연구를 실시하였다. 마이크로파 발열체로는 실리콘카바이드를 사용하였다. 각 촉매의 결정상은 XRD로 관찰하였으며 $CF_4$의 분해율은 GC-TCD를 사용하였다. $500^{\circ}C$ 반응온도에서 10 wt% Ce로 개질화한 알루미나가 개질화하지 않은 알루미나에 비해 $CF_4$ 분해율이 높았다. 반응속도상수 k값은 $Ce(20)/Al_2O_3=Ce(0)/Al_2O_3 순이었다. XRD 패턴은 $Ce(0)/Al_2O_3$에서는 반응 전후의 차이가 나타나지 않았으며 $Al_2O_3$의 결정구조만 관찰되었다. 반면에 Ce를 담지한 촉매에서는 산화알루미늄와 산화세륨의 혼합형으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과 Ce를 담지한 $Al_2O_3$촉매는 Ce를 담지하지 않은 촉매에 비해 동일한 분해율을 가지면서 반응온도를 $200^{\circ}C$ 정도를 낮출 수 있음을 보여주었다. 또한 cerium sulfate의 적정비율은 5~10 wt%임을 보여주었다.

  • The effect of alloy compositions of the bond coating on the plasma sprayed-thermal barrier coatings was investigated. The performance of the coating composed of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ and Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$was evaluated by isothermal and thermal cyclic test in an ambient atmosphere at 115$0^{\circ}C$. The failure of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coatings was occurred at the bond coating/ceramic coating interface while Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$ coating was failed at the substrate/bond coating interface after thermal cyclic test. The lifetime of Rene80/NiCrAl/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coatings was longer than Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$coating. The oxidation rate of the NiCrAl bond coating examined by TGA was lower than CoNiCrAlY bond coatings. In summary, these results suggest that Rene80/CoNiCrAlY/ZrO$_2$-CeO$_2$-Y$_2$O$_3$system as thermal barrier coating be not suitable considering the durability of the coating layer for high temperature oxidation and thermal stress.

  • Effect of Al2O3 addition on the mechanical properties and microstructure of Ce-TZP were studied. 12, 14, 16Ce-TZP containing 0-40wt% Al2O3 were prepared by sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h. in air. Density, linear shrinkage, bending strength, Vickers hardness, microstructuer and the amount of stress induced phase transformation were examined. Vickers hardness increased linearly with increasing amounts of Al2O3. The amount of transformation and fracture toughness decreased linearly with increasing amount of Al2O3. Linear shrinkage and relative density decreased with increasing Al2O3 content in all composition of Ce-TZP. Grain growth of Ce-TZP was inhibited by Al2O3 dispersion and fracture mode of Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites transformed from intergranular to transgranular fracture as the amount of Al2O3 increased. TEM observation revealed that Al2O3 particles were located mainly at grain boundaries of ZrO2.
