Background: CD30 is a member of TNF receptor family and expressed on lymphocytes and other hematopoietic cells following activation as well as Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells in Hodgkin's lymphoma. In this study, CD30-mediated regulation of cell adhesion molecule expression on normal activated mouse T cells was investigated. Methods: Mouse T cells were activated with anti-CD3 antibody for induction of CD30, which was cross-linked by immobilized anti-CD30 antibody. Results: High level of CD30 expression on T cells was observed on day 5, but only little on day 3 even under culture condition resulting in an identical T cell proliferation, indicating that CD30 expression requires a prolonged stimulation up to 5 days. Cross-linking of CD30 alone altered neither proliferation nor apoptosis of normal activated T cells. Instead, CD30 appeared to promote cell adherence to culture substrate, and considerably upregulated ICAM-1 and, to a lesser extent, ICAM-2 expression on activated T cells, whereas CD2 and CD18 (LFA-1) expression was not affected. None of cytokines known as main regulators of ICAM-1 expression on tissue cells (IL 4, $IFN{\gamma}$ and $IFN{\alpha}$) enhanced ICAM-1 expression in the absence of CD30 signals. On the other hand, addition of $NF-{\kappa}B$ inhibitor, PDTC (0.1 mM) completely abrogated the CD30-mediated upregulation of ICAM-1 expression, but not CD2 and ICAM-2 expression. Conclusion: This results support that CD30 upregulates ICAM-1 expression of T cell and such regulation is not mediated by higher cytokine production but $NF-{\kappa}B$ activation. Therefore, CD30 may play important roles in T-T or T-B cell interaction through regulation of ICAM-1, and -2 expression.

1H-nmr chemical shifts and lineshapes of amino-protons of acetamide (AA) in n-alcohols were determined. The chemical shifts are discussed by the Reichardt's solvent polarity parameter, E$_{T}$(30). The following relationship between $\delta$obs and E$_{T}$(30) was obtained. ${\delta}_{obs}$ = ${\delta}_{o}$ + aE$_{T}$ (30) + b[E$_{T}$(30)]$^2$ where ${\delta}_{o}$ is the chemical shift of the solute in gaseous state or at $E_{T}$(30) = 0, a is a characteristic constant for the protons of AA in n-alcohol solutions and b is a constant for the solute (AA)-solvent (n-alcohols) interaction. The barrier of the hindered rotation about the N-C(O) bond in AA was obtained by analysis of the lineshapes of the amino-protons in AA. The behavior of the internal rotation as well as chemical shifts of the amino-protons in AA has been found to be closely related to the $E_{T}$(30) of n-alcohols.

This study was carried out to elucidate the proper split application method of nitrogen fertilizer for early dry seeding culture of rice in Honam plain area from 1997 to 1998 in Korea. Dongjinbyeo was selected as rice variety for this experiment. The rate of $160kg\;ha^{-1}$ of nitrogen was split as 40-30-30% of total nitrogen at three different application time combination ; T1) basal-5th leaf-panicle formation(PF) stage, T2) 3rd leaf-5th leaf-PF, and T3) 3rd leaf-7th leaf-PF. The content of $NH_4-N$ in soil at 5th leaf stage was higher in top dressing plots(T2, T3) compared with basal application(T1), at 7th leaf stage it was most in top dressed at 3rd leaf and 5th leaf stage, but there was no difference at heading stage. Amount of nitrogen uptake and nitrogen use efficiency was higher in the order of T3, T2 and T1(basal application). Spikelet number per unit area was more in the order of T3, T2 and T1, but rate of ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight were not significantly different among three nitrogen split application methods. Milled rice yields were higher in top dressed plots compared with basal nitrogen application plots. From the results of this experiment, reasonable nitrogen split application method for early dry seeding culture of rice could be 40-30-30% of total nitrogen at 3rd leaf, 7th leaf and panicle formation stage.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of $Sa-Am$ lung sedating acupuncture (LS) on wrist pulse changes in healthy participants. Method : Forty healthy subjects participated in this study, and were divided into an acupuncture group and controlled group. Using a three-dimensional pulse imaging system (DMP-3000), wrist pulse was measured before, immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after acupuncture in the acupuncture group, with the rest in controlled group. Sixteen parameters between the acupuncture group and the controlled group were analyzed at Cun, Guan and Chi in each time. Result : After LS acupuncture, wrist pulse sixteen parameters were changed significantly according to the time at each measuring region. 1. Heart rate significantly decreased in immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after, Pulse period significantly increased in 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after. 2. T4 didn't significantly changed, T-T4 significantly increased in immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after. T4/T, T4/(T-T4), T1/T, T5/T significantly decreased in immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after. (T-T4)/T significantly decreased in immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after. T5 significantly increased in 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after. 3. Modulus of elasticity significantly decreased in left Cun 60 minutes after, significantly increased in left Chi 30 minutes after. 4. Variance of Amplitude significantly increased in right Guan 60 minutes after. 5. Area of pulse significantly increased in left Cun 60 minutes after, left Chi 30 minutes after and right Cun 60 minutes after. Systolic pulse area significantly decreased left Chi 30 minutes after, right Cun immediately after, 30 minutes after and 60 minutes after, right Guan in immediately after. 6. Energy/min significantly decreased in left Chi 60 minutes after and right Cun immediately after. EIx significantly decreased in right Cun immediately after. 7. In both sides Cun, Guan, Chi wrist pulse, a lot of significant changes in right Cun and left Chi appeared, and then followed by the left Cun, right Guan. Conclusion : This study analyzed that the correlation between LS acupuncture and radial pulse(cun, guan, chi) is considered to be meaningful, hereafter clinical studies on this are needed.
We have investigated the effect of short-term immobilization stress on the serum concentrations of cortisol and DHEAS in BALB/c male mice. Serum cortisol and DHEAS concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay(RIA). We found there were significantly increased in the cortisol levels in 30 min-stressed group(Ⅰ-30N) compared with control(C) group (p<0.01), and also increased with significance in 120 min-stressed group(I-120N) compared with C group(p<0.01). Cortisol concentrations were significantly increased in both 30 min-stressed group(Ⅰ-30T), and 120 min-stressed group(Ⅰ-120T) compared with C group(p<0.01). The sustained increase of cortisol levels were observed in both SG treated and SG non-treated group. Serum cortisol levels were lower in SG treated group than SG non-treated group with significance(p<0.01). By contrast, DHEAS levels were slightly decreased without significance in Ⅰ-30N, but significantly decreased in Ⅰ-120N compared with C group(p<0.01). There were slightly decreased in the DHEAS levels in Ⅰ-30T, but significantly decreased in Ⅰ-120T compared with C group(p<0.01). However, SG treatment did not induce any significant changes of DHEAS levels in both 30 min and 120 min-stressed group. Though short-term immobilization stress, the continuous decline of DHEAS levels were observed. Therefore, these results show that short-term immobilization stress affects the serum concentrations of cortisol and DHEAS in mice.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of short-term thermal stress on the serum concentrations of cortisol and DHEAS in BALB / c male mice. Cortisol and DHEAS concentrations in serum were measured by radioimmunoassay(RIA). We found there were significantly increased in the cortisol levels in 30 min-stressed group(T30) compared with control group(p<0.01), and then declined without significance in 120 min-stressed group (T120) compared with T30. By contrast, DHEAS levels were decreased without significance in both T30 and T120 compared with control group. Though short-term thermal stress, the continuous decline of DHEAS levels were observed. These results show that short-term thermal stress affects the serum levels of cortisol and DHEAS in mice. Furthermore, we found that DHEAS is a stress-related hormone and will be able to utilize as a stress marker.
Growth response and evapotranspiration of tobacco as to each soil moisture condition treated with different height of ground water table such as 30cm, 100cm, 170cm, and 230cm were investigated. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Soil water potential in the rhizosphere (25cm depth from surface) treated with ground water table (G.W.T) of 230 cm was less than -6.5 bar at 60 days after transplanting. 2. Dry weight of leaves per plant was the highest in the pot treated with 100 cm G.W.T and was the lowest in the pot treated with 230 cm G.W.T.. Leaves/Stem ratio of dry weight was the lowest in the pot treated with 230 cm G.W.T. This would show that extension of leaves as compared with elongation of stem was suppressed. .3. In the roster stress condition of 230 cm G.W.T., extension of leaves was continued until the latter growth stage, Relative growth rate of leaf area per plant of the pot with 30 cm G.W.T. was the highest through all growth period after fixation of G.W.7., but owing to lower density of leaf, the dry weight of leaves per plant was less rather than that of the pot with 170 cm G.W.T. at 64 days after transplanting. 4. The highest evapotranspiration per plant per day was shown at the 45th day after transplanting in the pots with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T. and at 60 days in the pots with 170cm and 230cm G.W.T respectively. 5. In the soil moisture conditions with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T., evapotranspiration per plant per hour was much higher in the daytime that at night as well as in clear day than in rain-cloudy day owing to loner relative humidity , but in the water stress condition with 230 cm G.W.T., that was much lower. 6. Total evapotranspiration per plant during the whole growing period of 64 days was in order of 30cm > 100 cm > 170 cm > 230 cm G.W.T.. Total evapotranspiration for 34 days after fixation of G.W.T was much higher at night than in the daytime in case of water stress conditions i.e 170cm and 230cm G.W.T. but in normal condition of the pots with 30cm and 100cm G.W.T. that was much higher in the daytime than at night. 7. Leaf water potential of the 3rd and 6th leaf from top at 64 days after transplanting was in order of 100cm > 30 cm > 170cm > 230cm G.W.T. The reason why leaf water potential in the pot with 30cm was less than that in the pot with 100cm G.W.T. would be the abnormal turgidity with low density of cell substrates by the excess water absorption in the pot with 30cm G.W.T..
1H-nmr chemical shifts and lineshapes of amino-protons of thioacetamide in n-alcohols were determined. The chemical shifts are discussed by the Reichardt's solvent polarity parameter, $E_T(30)$. The following relationship between ${delta}_{obs}\;and\;E_T(30)$ was obtained, ${\delta}_{obs}=a{\cdot}E_T(30)+b{\cdot}(E_T(30))_2$ where a is a characteristic constant for the protons of thioacetamide in n-alcohol solutions and b is a constant for the solute(TA)-solvent (n-alcohols) interactions. The barrier of the hindered rotation about the N-C(S) bond in TA was obtained by analysis of the lineshape of the amino-protons in TA. The behavior of the hindered rotation as well as chemical shifts of the amino-protons in TA has been found to be closely related to the $E_T(30)$ of n-alcohols.
The effect of vitamin E supplementation on plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol level, total antioxidant level and reproductive performance in Murrah buffaloes was studied during periparturient period. Twenty-four advance pregnant buffaloes were randomly divided into four equal groups as $T_1$, $T_2$, $T_3$ and $T_4$ and were supplemented with 0, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 IU of ${\alpha}$-tocopheryl acetate (Merck) from 60 days prepartum to 30 days postpartum and 0, 500, 750 and 1,000 IU from 30 to 60 days postpartum, respectively. Blood samples were collected at -60, -45, -30, -15, -7, 0, 7, 15, 30 and 60 days of parturition and were analyzed for plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and total antioxidant activity (TAA). The intake of DM, CP and TDN did not vary among different groups. Plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and TAA around parturition (-7 to 15 day) in $T_3$ and $T_4$ were significantly higher than the control group. There was 17% reduction in retention of fetal membranes (RFM) and metritis in $T_4$ than control. The post partum estrus interval averaged 58.00, 55.33, 51.83 and 43.00 days in $T_1$, $T_2$, $T_3$ and $T_4$ respectively. There was significant reduction in days open in both $T_3$ and $T_4$ in comparison to $T_1$ group (127,130 Vs.146). All the vitamin E supplemented groups showed reduction in days open than their previous lactation performance. Supplementation of vitamin E at $1,500IU\;d^{-1}$ from 60 day prepartum to 30 day post partum to buffaloes exhibited beneficial effect on plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol level and TAA around parturition and continuation of its supplementation at $1,000IU\;d^{-1}$ from 30 to 60 days of lactation improved post partum reproductive performance of buffaloes.
Vegetables production in greenhouse are typically intensely managed with high inputs of fertilizers and irrigation water, which increases the risk of ground-water nitrate contamination. In 2010 and 2011, a study was conducted to determine the appropriate depth of soil moisture sensor for automatic irrigation control to use water and nitrogen efficiently under subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems. The irrigation line for SDI placed 30 cm below soil surface and tensiometer was used as soil moisture sensor. Three tensiometer treatments placed at 10 (SDI-T10), 20 (SDI-T20) and 30 cm (SDI-T30) depths below soil surface under SDI. These are also compared to SUR-T20 treatment where tensiometer placed at 20 cm below soil surface under surface drip irrigation (SUR) systems. The growth of cucumber was not statistically different between SUR and SDI without SDI-T30 treatment. Fruit yields (Mg/ha) were 57.0 and 56.9 (SDI-T10), 56.0 and 60.5 (SDI-T20), 40.9 and 41.2 (SDI-T30) and 56.6 and 54.3 (SUR-T20) for 2010 and 2011, respectively. Slightly higher total yield was observed in tensiometer placed 20 cm below the soil surface, although no significant differences were found between SDI-T10 and SDI-T20 under SDI treatments. In addition, nitrogen application rates and daily irrigation rates were lowest in SDI-T20 compared with other SDIs and SUR treatments. Nitrogen and daily irrigation application under SDI-T20 was lower than that under SUR-T20 by 6.0%. These findings suggested tensiometer 20 cm depth under SDI systems was best for cucumber production in greenhouse.
