In this study, several combined effect of KCl addition into bring solution, microwave heating of Chinese radish for 3 minutes and addition of two salt mixtures into half fermented Kakdugi were investigated to compare their improving effects of storage stability of Kakdugi, Kakdugi was prepared by salting in 15% NaCl solution for 2 hours and fermented at $25^{\circ}C$ and determined for the changed in pH, total acidity and reducing sugars. It was found from the result that the combined method of salts addition and heating treatment improved the storage stability by 6.4 folds based on pH change where salts mixture of phosphated, Ca EDTA, and Sod. citrate contributed the most effect. Changed in reducing sugar were greatly reduced by salt mixture addition while microwave heating and KCl addition affected little. Storage of Kakdugi at $4^{\circ}C$ after preparation with combined method could extend the storage life more than 8 folds of those Kakdugi stored at $25^{\circ}C$. However total acidity showed higher values for those prepared by combined method and stored at $4^{\circ}C\;or\;25^{\circ}C$.

Exendin-4 (Ex-4), a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist, has been known to reverse hepatic steatosis in ob/ob mice. Although many studies have evaluated molecular targets of Ex-4, its mechanism of action on hepatic steatosis and fibrosis has not fully been determined. In the liver, glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) is mainly expressed in hepatocytes, endothelial cells and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). In the present study, the effects of Ex-4 on GLUT4 expression were determined in the liver of ob/ob mice. Ob/ob mice were treated with Ex-4 for 10 weeks. Serum metabolic parameters, hepatic triglyceride levels, and liver tissues were evaluated for hepatic steatosis. The weights of the whole body and liver in ob/ob mice were reduced by long-term Ex-4 treatment. Serum metabolic parameters, hepatic steatosis, and hepatic fibrosis in ob/ob mice were reduced by Ex-4. Particularly, Ex-4 improved hepatic steatosis by enhancing GLUT4 via GLP-1R activation in ob/ob mice. Ex-4 treatment also inhibited hepatic fibrosis by decreasing expression of connective tissue growth factor in HSCs of ob/ob mice. Our data suggest that GLP-1 agonists exert a protective effect on hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Recently damage of rice bakanae disease disseminated by infected seeds increased in paddy field in Korea. For controlling rice bakanae disease, the efficacy of 17 fungicides was assessed by 5 kinds of bioassay, spore germination test (SGT), mycelial growth test, detection test on Komada's medium (KDT), pouch test (PT) and greenhouse test (GT). Among ergosterol biosynthesis inhibiting fungicides, prochloraz showed a high controlling activity in all the assay systems while the others showed very low activity except for $500\;{\mu}g/ml$ of hexaconazole in GT and $500\;{\mu}g/ml$ of triflumizole in KDT. Although benomyl and the mixture of benomyl and thiram showed a good activity at 100 and $500\;{\mu}g/ml$ in SGT and PT, respectively, in GT they did a middle activity. Trifloxystrobin and kresoxim-methyl included in strobilurins showed a good activity even at $20\;{\mu}g/ml$ in KDT as well as a middle activity in SGT. Also a high activity not only at $10\;{\mu}g/ml$ in SGT but also at $100\;{\mu}g/ml$ KDT was detected in thiram. The activity of fludioxonil was confirmed in SGT, KDT and PT. Based on these results, it is very important to determine a bioassay system, because the fungicidal activity against rice bakanae disease was fluctuated depending on a assay systems as well as the mechanism of fungicide.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to correlate the degree of sonographic medial meniscal extrusion with MRI and arthroscopic findings. Materials and Methods: Out of these 32 patients, with medial meniscal tear who went on arthroscopic surgery, 14 patients had the medial meniscal tear and 18 patients had both lateral and medial meniscal tear. The extent of meniscal extrusion without meniscal tear was assesed in 24 patients who did not show meniscal tear on MRI. The extent of meniscal extrusion was measured between tibial medial joint line (excluded osteophyte) and the outer margin of the medial meniscus. Kellgren-Lawrence grading scale was assessed in plain X-ray image and the location of lesion was assessed during arthroscopic surgery. We also measured the extent of meniscal extrusion on MRI and sonography respectively, and compared each other. Results: There was significant difference between patients with medial meniscal tear and both lateral and medial meniscal tear, patients with medial meniscal tear, patients with both medial and lateral meniscal tear, patients without meniscal tear (P value<0.05). Conclusion: The Meniscus tear must be considered when sonography shows the meniscal extrusion more than 5 mm in length.
The purpose of this study is to increase efficiency of CPR through comparing the chest-compression quality between rescuer's simplified verbal order method and the continued verbal order method by utilizing voice meter during CPR. Subjects were 89 people(45 people for the experimental group, 44 people for the control group) who completed the 15-week CPR curriculum as undergraduates for the department of Emergency Medical Technology in C Province and were carried out by being randomly extracted. The group division was set for the experimental group as the group with the simplified verbal order and for the control group as the group with the continued verbal order. The period of measurement was progressed primarily(November 10, November 28, 2011) and secondarily(September 3-September 4, 2012). An analysis was used SPSS WIN 12.0 program. As a result of research, as for the implementation of appropriate chest compression(time, %), the quality was higher(p<.05) in the experimental group(102.86 times, 67.79%) than the control group(85.31 times, 55.84%). As a result of research, the chest compression(time, %) in the experimental group(102.86 times, 67.79%) had the higher effect of chest compression quality(p<.05) than the control group(85.31 times, 55.84%). On the other hand, the operation of weak chest compression(time) was higher in control group(61.13 times) than experimental group(35.54 times). The proper chest compression was shown(p<.05) in men of the experimental group as for gender and in over 60kg of the experimental group as for weight.
The advanced bioremediation of diesel-contaminated soil through the exploration of bacterial interaction with plants was studied. A diesel-degrading rhizobacterium, Rhodococcus sp.412, and a plant species, Zea mays, having tolerant against diesel was selected. Zea mays was seeded in uncontaminated soil or diesel-contaminated soil with or without Rhodococcus sp. 412. After cultivating for 30 days, the growth of Zea mays in the contaminated soil inoculated with Rhodococcus sp. 412 was better than that in the contaminated soil without the bacterium. The residual diesel concentrations were lowered by seeding Zea mays or inoculating Rhodococctis sp. 412. These results Indicate that the simultaneous use of Zea mays and Rhodococcus sp. 412 can give beneficial effect to the remediation of oil-contaminated soil. Bacterial community was characterized using a 16S rDNA PCR and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting method. The similarities of DGGE fingerprints were $20.8{\sim}39.9%$ between the uncontaminated soil and diesel contaminated soil. The similarities of DGGE fingerprints were $21.9%{\sim}53.6%$ between the uncontaminated soil samples, and $31.6%{\sim}50.0%$ between the diesel-contaminated soil samples. This results indicated that the structure of bacterial community was significantly influence by diesel contamination.
Recently, poly-γ-glutamic acid synthetase A (pgsA) has been applied to display exogenous proteins on the surface of Lactobacillus casei or Lactococcus lactis, which results in a surface-displayed component of bacteria. However, the ability of carrying genes encoded by plasmids and the expression efficiency of recombinant bacteria can be somewhat affected by the longer gene length of pgsA (1,143 bp); therefore, a truncated gene, pgsA, was generated based on the characteristics of pgsA by computational analysis. Using murine IL-10 as an exogenous gene, recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum was constructed and the capacity of the surface-displayed protein and functional differences between exogenous proteins expressed by these strains were evaluated. Surface expression of IL-10 on both recombinant bacteria with anchorins and the higher expression levels in L. plantarum-pgsA'-IL-10 were confirmed by western blot assay. Most importantly, up-regulation of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and the nuclear transcription factor NF-κB p65 in RAW264.7 cells after stimulation with Poly(I:C) or LPS was exacerbated after co-culture with L. plantarum-pgsA. By contrast, IL-10 expressed by these recombinant strains could reduce these factors, and the expression of these factors was associated with recombinant strains that expressed anchorin (especially in L. plantarum-pgsA'-IL-10) and was significantly lower compared with the anchorin-free strains. These findings indicated that exogenous proteins could be successfully displayed on the surface of L. plantarum by pgsA or pgsA', and the expression of recombinant bacteria with pgsA' was superior compared with bacteria with pgsA.
A number of Saccharomycopsis fibuligera strains that can hydrolyse and utilize starch as a carbon source were isolated from nuruk, a traditional Korean starter for rice wine fermentation, and their specific growth rates on starch-containing medium were compared to choose the prominent strain. S. fibuligera strain MBY1320 showed a higher growth rate at $42^{\circ}C$ than that of strain S. fibuligera KCTC7806, indicating that S. fibuligera MBY1320 has more thermo-tolerant machinery for starch hydrolysis and utilization than KCTC7806. Although the activity of ${\alpha}$-amylase at $30^{\circ}C$ was significantly lower for S. fibuligera MBY1320 than KCTC7806 (3,812.5 U vs. 14,878.5 U), S. fibuligera MBY1320 showed a much higher glucoamylase activity at $42^{\circ}C$ than S. fibuligera KCTC7806 (5,048.9 U vs. 13,152.3 U). Thus, a new S. fibuligera strain, with a higher starch-hydrolysing activity at elevated temperatures than that of other types of strain, this study reports.
In order to develop a new anti-diabetic ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor, we compared the ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the cell-free extracts of 48 strains of yeasts isolated from Korean fermented foods, and found that Pichia burtonii Y257-7 exhibited the highest ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity of 55.6%. The ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor was maximally produced when Pichia burtonii Y257-7 was cultured in LB broth (initial pH of 6.0) at $28^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitor, partially purified by Sephadex G-50 gel permeation chromatography and systematic solvents extraction, revealed potent hypoglycemic effects in normal rats and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats after the oral administration of starch.

This study was conducted to investigate the level of PCBs and distribution of PCB congeners in the ambient air of Korea and Japan. The source of PCBs were also studied by a statistical method. The TEQ concentration of PCB in the ambient air of Korea and Japan were between 0.003 and $1.01\;pgTEQ/m^3$(mean value : $0.22\;pgTEQ/m^3$) and between 0.002 and $0.014\;pgTEQ/m^3$ (mean value: $0.007\;pgTEQ/m^3$), respectively. The ambient air of industrial area of Korea showed a fluctuation in PCB concentration than other sampling area. The isomer distribution patterns in the ambient air was more or less similar in all sampling places. In addition, highly chlorinated homologues ($7{\sim}10CB$) were detected in the only Korea industrial area. This observation suggests that there is a possibility of specific source of PCBs in the industrial area. The source identification of PCB in ambient air was performed using multivariate statistical analysis(principal component analysis). As a result, it is estimated that the Korean ambient air was more influenced by combustion process than the ambient air of Japan and also the effect of PCB commercial products was relatively a small.
