$Si_3N_4/SiC$ Nano Composite의 제조 (The Fabrication of $Si_3N_4/SiC$ Nano-Composite)

  • $Si_3N_4/Sic$. nano-composites were fabricated by hot-pressing, gas pressure sintering. The composites contained up to 50 wt. % of SiC. The mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, and hardness of the composite are compared each other. The flexural strength of the composites was improved significantly by introducing fine SiC particles into $Si_3N_4$ matrix, while the fracture toughness was not improved. The increase in flexural strength is attributed to the formation of uniformly elongated $\beta -Si_3N_4$ grains as well as the reduction of grain size.

  • SiC and $SiC-Si_3N_4$ powder were synthesized via the carbiding and carbiding-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz respectively using graphite as a reducing agent. $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ composite was obtained by the carbiding-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz-graphite mixture at 1, 35$0^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere. $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ composite was obtained by the carbidint-nitriding reaction of Jecheon quartz-graphite mixture at 1, 35$0^{\circ}C$ in $N_2-H_2$ atmosphere. The ratio of $\beta$-SiC+($\alpha$+$\beta$)-$Si_3N_4$ content in a produced composite could be controlled by adjusting the reaction time and gaseous mixture.

  • ${Si_3}{N_4}$와 BN의 선택적 산화반응과 질소분위기 소결에 의하여 $Si_2N_2O$로 결합된$Si_3N_4-BN$복합재료를 개발하였으며, 이때 산화반응 온도와 CaO의 첨가가 $Si_2N_2O$의 생성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하였다. $Si_2N_2O$상이 도입된 $Si_3N_4-BN$복합재료는 내열충격성 및 용강에 대한 내침식성이 우수하여 연속제강새안의 부품인 break ring등의 소재로 사용될 수 있다.

  • Adsorption behavior and amount of phenolic resin followed silica (SiO2) formation onto silicon nitride(Si3N4) surface were investigated using electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) technique and with UV spectrometer, to fabricate Si3N4/SiC nano-composite based on reaction between SiO2 formed and phenolic resin absorbed onto Si3N4 particle. The amount of SiO2 formed and carbon from phenolic resin absorbed onto Si3N4 surface were calculated quantitatively to adjust the reaction between SiO2 and phenolic resin, resulting in no residual SiO2 and carbon. As a result, pre-heated tempeature for optimized reaction was below 25$0^{\circ}C$, in which there was no residual SiO2 and carbon.

Effect of Alumina Coating on Mechanical Properties of SiC Whisker Reinforced Silicon Nitrate Ceramic Composite

  • Alumina coated SiC whiskers were prepared by homogeneous precipitation of aluminum sulfate. The Si3N4 composites reinforced with coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 2 h under an $N_{2}$ atmosphere of 0.1 MPa to examine the effects of coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced $Si_{3}N_{4}$ composite. By the addition of alumina coated SiC whiskers instead of as received ones, the fracture toughness of composite was about 6.7 $MPam^{1/2}$ which was slightly lower than as received SiC whisker reinforced composite. This result seems to be caused by the fact that the crack deflection and whisker pull-out were decreased. Thus, alumina coated SiC whiskers were considered to form relatively strong interface bond with $Si_{3}N_{4}$ matrix.

  • Silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) is regarded as one of the most promising materials for high temperature structural applications due to its excellent mechanical properties at both room and elevated temperatures. However, one high-temperature $Si_3N_4$ material intended for use in radomes has a relatively high dielectric constant of 7.9 - 8.2 at 8 - 10 GHz. In order to reduce the dielectric constant of the $Si_3N_4$, an in-situ reaction process was used to fabricate $Si_3N_4-SiO_2$-BN composites. In the present study, an in-situ reaction between $B_2O_3$ and $Si_3N_4$, with or without addition of BN in the starting powder mixture, was used to form the composite. The in-situ reaction process resulted in the uniform distribution of the constituents making up the composite ceramic, and resulted in good flexural strength and dielectric constant. The composite was produced by pressure-less sintering and hot-pressing at $1650^{\circ}C$ in a nitrogen atmosphere. Microstructure, flexural strength, and dielectric properties of the composites were evaluated with respect to their compositions and sintering processes. The highest flexural strength (193 MPa) and lowest dielectric constant (5.4) was obtained for the hot-pressed composites. The strength of these $Si_3N_4-SiO_2$-BN composites decreased with increasing BN content.

  • The reaction product between Si3N4 and ZrO2 has been studied by heat treatment of Si3N4-Zr(Y)O2 composite in high vacuum(<10-5 torr) and in air at $700^{\circ}C$. ZrN was formed after heat treatment in vacuum and easily oxidized after heat treatment in air. The amount of ZrN is related to the Y2O3 content dissolved in ZrO2. After the heat treatment in air the toughness increased and the spalling due to the oxidation of ZrN in specimen surface was observed. As a result, it is suggested that the formation of ZrN phase in Si3N4-ZrO2 composite enhance the toughness of the composite in an oxidation conditon.

  • The Si3N4 composites reinforced with carbon-coated SiC whiskers were fabricated by hot-pressing at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours to examine the effects of carbon-coated whiskers on the mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced Si3N4 composites. The flexural strength of the Si3N4 composites and Si3N4 monolith respectively. The weak interfacial bond between carbon-coated SiC whiskers and Si3N4 matrix which enhances the crack deflection and whisker pull-out could contribute to the improvement of mechanical properties of the composites.

  • 질화규소는 고경도, 고인성 세라믹 재료이기 때문에, 기계적 가공성은 매우 나쁘며, 또한 질화규소는 높은 전기 저항을 갖는다. 매우 높은 전기저항을 띠는 질화규소에 30wt% 이상의 TiN 분말이 첨가되었을 때 전도성 세라믹 복합체가 된다. 높은 전기 전도도를 가질 때 세라믹을 방전가공방법(EDM)을 이용하여 정밀한 가공을 할 수 있다. 높은 전기 전도도를 갖는 $Si_3N_4-TiN$ 세라믹 복합체는 EDM 방법을 이용하여 금속 가공 tool을 만드는데 이용되며, 이러한 tool 재료들은 산화뿐만 아니라 심각한 마모문제를 갖는다. 상압소결후 post HIP 소결방법으로 $Si_3N_4-TiN$ 복합체를 만들었으며, TiN의 양의 변화에 따른 $Si_3N_4$ 복합체의 마모특성을 상온의 대기중에서 조사하였다. 경도, 파괴인성, 강도값을 마모량과 비교하였다. 마모흔의 SEM 관찰로 $Si_3N_4-TiN$ 복합체의 마모기구를 설명하였다.
