  • Boiling heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants (R22, R32, R134a, R125, R290, and R600a) and refrigerant mixtures (R32/Rl34a, R290/ R600a, and R32/R125) are measured experimentally and compared with Chen's correlation. The test section is a seamless stainless steel tube with inner diameter of 7.7mm and uniformly heated by applying electric current directly to the tube. Heat fluxes range from 10 to 30kW$^2$. Mass fluxes are set to 424 ~ 742kg/m$^{2}$s for R22, R32, R134a, R32/R134a, and R32/Rl25 ; 265 ~ 583kg/m$^{2}$s for R290, R600a, and R290/R600a. Heat transfer coefficients depend strongly on heat flux at a low quality region and become independent as quality increases. Convective boiling term in the Chen's correlation predicts experimental data of the pure refrigerants fairly well (relative error of 12.1% for the data of quality over 0.2). The correlation for pure substances overpredicts the heat transfer coefficients for nonazeotropic refrigerant mixtures.

  • Let M be an R-module, where R is a commutative ring with identity 1 and let G(V,E) be a graph. In this paper, we study the graphs associated with modules over commutative rings. We associate three simple graphs $ann_f({\Gamma}(M_R))$, $ann_s({\Gamma}(M_R))$ and $ann_t({\Gamma}(M_R))$ to M called full annihilating, semi-annihilating and star-annihilating graph. When M is finite over R, we investigate metric dimensions in $ann_f({\Gamma}(M_R))$, $ann_s({\Gamma}(M_R))$ and $ann_t({\Gamma}(M_R))$. We show that M over R is finite if and only if the metric dimension of the graph $ann_f({\Gamma}(M_R))$ is finite. We further show that the graphs $ann_f({\Gamma}(M_R))$, $ann_s({\Gamma}(M_R))$ and $ann_t({\Gamma}(M_R))$ are empty if and only if M is a prime-multiplication-like R-module. We investigate the case when M is a free R-module, where R is an integral domain and show that the graphs $ann_f({\Gamma}(M_R))$, $ann_s({\Gamma}(M_R))$ and $ann_t({\Gamma}(M_R))$ are empty if and only if $$M{\sim_=}R$$. Finally, we characterize all the non-simple weakly virtually divisible modules M for which Ann(M) is a prime ideal and Soc(M) = 0.

  • We have applied Pb2+ to the structural analysis of 5S rRNA from Pseudomonas alcaligenes. The mode of Pb2+-induced clevage on 5S rRNA has shown several specific features which may be utilized for the examination of tertiary structure of 5S rRNA: Pb2+ does not attack the stable helical stems; single stranded regions or bulges are attacked in variable susceptibilities depending on the positions of the sequences or the bases on the molecule; unstable helical region d is not attacked at all; only 3' sided strand of unstable helical stem C is weakly attacked, leaving 5' sided strand unattacked. Based on the Pb2+ cleavage properties and the structural analysis of Xanthomonas celebensis 5S rRNA, we have proposed a working hypothesis for the tertiary interactions in 5S rRNA.

  • Background: As the main metabolites of ginsenosides, 20(S, R)-protopanaxadiol [PPD(S, R)] and 20(S, R)-protopanaxatriol [PPT(S, R)] are the structural basis response to a series of pharmacological effects of their parent components. Although the estrogenicity of several ginsenosides has been confirmed, however, the underlying mechanisms of their estrogenic effects are still largely unclear. In this work, PPD(S, R) and PPT(S, R) were assessed for their ability to bind and activate human estrogen receptor α (hERα) by a combination of in vitro and in silico analysis. Methods: The recombinant hERα ligand-binding domain (hERα-LBD) was expressed in E. coli strain. The direct binding interactions of ginsenosides with hERα-LBD and their ERα agonistic potency were investigated by fluorescence polarization and reporter gene assays, respectively. Then, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to simulate the binding modes between ginsenosides and hERα-LBD to reveal the structural basis for their agonist activities toward receptor. Results: Fluorescence polarization assay revealed that PPD(S, R) and PPT(S, R) could bind to hERα-LBD with moderate affinities. In the dual luciferase reporter assay using transiently transfected MCF-7 cells, PPD(S, R) and PPT(S, R) acted as agonists of hERα. Molecular docking results showed that these ginsenosides adopted an agonist conformation in the flexible hydrophobic ligand-binding pocket. The stereostructure of C-20 hydroxyl group and the presence of C-6 hydroxyl group exerted significant influence on the hydrogen bond network and steric hindrance, respectively. Conclusion: This work may provide insight into the chemical and pharmacological screening of novel therapeutic agents from ginsenosides.

  • Morphological characteristics and pathogenicity of Rhizoctonia species causing blight diseases of turfgrasses were studied. The species were identified as Rhizoctonia cerealis Van der Hoeven, R. oryzae Ryker et Gooch, and R. solani $K{\ddot{u}hn}$ based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Isolates of R. solani were assigned to anastomosis groups (AG) with cultural type 1 (1A), 2-2 (IIIB), and 2-2 (IV). R. cerealis, R. oryzae and R. solani induced sheath rot and foliar blight symptoms on creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) and zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica). Inoculation tests showed that disease severity with isolates of R. cerealis and R. oryzae were more serious to creeping bentgrass than zoysiagrass. AG 1(1A) isolates of R. solani were strongly pathogenic on creeping bentgrass, but moderate to zoysiagrass. AG 2-2 (III) isolates were moderately pathogenic to zoysiagrass, but weakly to creeping bentgrass. AG 2-2 (IV) isolates from zoysiagrass were moderately pathogenic to zoysiagrass, but weakly to creeping bentgrass.

  • In this short note we study the torsion theories over a commutative ring R and discuss a relative dimension related to such theories for R-modules. Let ${\sigma}$ be a torsion functor and (T, F) be its corresponding partition of Spec(R). The concept of ${\sigma}$-Cohen Macaulay (abbr. ${\sigma}$-CM) module is defined and some of the main points concerning the usual Cohen-Macaulay modules are extended. In particular it is shown that if M is a non-zero ${\sigma}$-CM module over R and S is a multiplicatively closed subset of R such that, for all minimal element of T, $S{\cap}p={\emptyset}$, then $S^{-1}M$ is a $S^{-1}{\sigma}$-CM module over $S^{-1}$R, where $S^{-1}{\sigma}$ is the direct image of ${\sigma}$ under the natural ring homomorphism $R{\longrightarrow}S^{-1}R$.

  • A mixture of 20(R)- and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg$_{3}$ was obtained under mild acidic hydrolysis from protopanaxadiol saponins, ginsenosides Rb$_{1}$, Rb$_{2}$, Rc and Rd. The product was acetylated to give the peracetates, which were further converted into 20(R)-ginsenoside Rg$_{3}$, 20(S)-ginsenoside Rg$_{3}$, 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh$_{2}$ and 20(S)-ginsenoside Rh$_{2}$ by the direct alkaline treatment depending upon two kinds of temperature conditions respectively. The structure and physicochemical properties of a prosapogenin, 20(R)-ginsenoside Rh$_{2}$, were investigated.
