좌심방 기능회복을 위한 변형된 Maze III술식의 임상 분석 (A Modification of Maze III Procedure to Improve Left Atrial Function)

  • Background: The current study was undertaken to investigate the results of a modification in the conventional Maze III Procedure devised by the authors. The aim of the technical modification was in improving the left atrial contractility. Material and Method: Between July 1997 and December 1998, 34 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation for more than 1 year duration underwent a modified Maze III procedure. The assessment of the left atrial function was made by various echocardiographic measurements and SA nodal recovery was evaluated by HRV Holter monitoring. Result: All 34 patients were in sinus rhythm. On echocardiography, right atrial contraction was detected in 32 patients(94.1%) and left atrial contraction in 33 patients(97.1%). The echocardiographic A wave at 1, 6, and 12 months or more were 50.5$\pm$31.5, 62.1$\pm$25.1, 66$\pm$20.6 cm/sec, respectively, and the E wave measurements at the same time points were 152$\pm$31.1, 134.4$\pm$35.2, 133$\pm$27.5 cm/sec. The corresponding A/E ratios were 0.32$\pm$0.13, 0.48$\pm$0.18, 0.5$\pm$0.15, showing a rising trend. Treadmill evaluation at 6 months showed a mean 82% increase in heart rate after excising, and the SDNN and SDANN upon HRV Holter at 1 and 3 months postoperatively were 65.3$\pm$28.1/87.8$\pm$27.2 ms, and 60.0$\pm$24.1/83.4$\pm$25.7 ms, respectively, showing a predoinant autonomic recovery in the parasympathetic system(PSDNN = 0.01, PSDANN =0.015). Conclusion: The results of our data suggest that the current modification in the conventional Maze III Procedure was efective in enhancing the postoperative left atrial contractility.

Determination of Wool Follicle Characteristics of Iranian Sheep Breeds

  • In this study wool follicle characteristics of Iranian sheep breeds were investigated. A total of 242 male and female sheep of different age from 5 breeds were studied. Samples of skin were taken from the right midside to determine follicle characteristics. Overall averages for males and females were $3.7{\pm}0.1$ and $3.5{\pm}0.1$ for S/P ratio; $3.2{\pm}0.1$ and $3.6{\pm}0.1$ for primary follicle density; $12.1{\pm}0.7$ and $13.8{\pm}0.4$ for secondary follicle density; $15.3{\pm}0.7$ and $17.4{\pm}0.4$ for total primary plus secondary follicle density; $2.3{\pm}0.2$ and $3.5{\pm}0.3$ for percentage of inactive secondary follicles. Significant differences were found in some follicle characteristics between sheep breeds. Results of this study showed that sheep breeds raised in different parts of Iran characterized by a low S/P ratio and follicle density could be classed as carpet wool breeds.

Effects of Ovarian Cycle on Hemodynamic Responses during Dynamic Exercise in Sedentary Women

  • This study tested the hypothesis that effects of the menstrual cycle on resting blood pressure carry over to dynamic exercise. Eleven healthy females were studied during the early (EP; low estrogen, low progesterone) and late follicular (LP; high estrogen, low progesterone) menstrual phases. Stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and total vascular conductance (TVC) were assessed at rest and in response to mild and moderate cycling exercise during EP and LP. During EP, compared to LP, baseline SBP ($111{\pm}1$ vs. $103{\pm}2$ mmHg), DBP ($71{\pm}2$ vs. $65{\pm}2$ mmHg) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) ($84{\pm}2$ vs. $78{\pm}1$ mmHg) were higher and TVC ($47.0{\pm}1.5$ vs. $54.9{\pm}4.2$ ml/min/mmHg) was lower (p<0.05). During exercise, absolute values of SBP (Mild: $142{\pm}4$ vs. $127{\pm}5$ mmHg; Moderate: $157{\pm}4$ vs. $144{\pm}5$ mmHg) and MAP (Mild: $100{\pm}3$ vs. $91{\pm}3$ mmHg; Moderate: $110{\pm}3$ vs. $101{\pm}3$ mmHg) were also higher, while TVC was lower (Mild: $90.9{\pm}5.1$ vs. $105.4{\pm}5.2$ ml/min/mmHg; Moderate: $105.4{\pm}5.3$ vs. $123.9{\pm}8.1$ ml/min/mmHg) during EP (p<0.05). However, exercise-induced increases in SBP, MAP and TVC at both work intensities were similar between the two menstrual phases, even though norepinephrine concentrations were higher during LP. Results indicate that blood pressure during dynamic exercise fluctuates during the menstrual cycle. It is higher during EP than LP and appears to be due to additive effects of simultaneous increases in baseline blood pressure and reductions in baseline TVC.

일본 니시노시마 화산 분출이 2020년 8월 초 부산지역의 미세먼지 농도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of the Nishinoshima Volcanic Eruption on Fine Particulate Concentration in Busan in Early August 2020)

  • This study investigated the effect of volcanic materials that erupted from the Nishinoshima volcano, Japan, 1,300 km southeast of the Busan area at the end of July 2020, on the fine particle concentration in the Busan area. Backward trajectory analysis from the HYSPLIT model showed that the air parcel from the Nishinoshima volcano turned clockwise along the edge of the North Pacific high pressure and reached the Busan area. From August 4 to August 5, 2020, the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 in Busan started to increase rapidly from 1000 LST on August 4, and showed a high concentration for approximately 13 hours until 2400 LST. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio showed a relatively high value of 0.7 or more, and the SO2 concentration also showed a high value at the time when the PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations were relatively high. The SO42- concentration in PM2.5 in Busan showed a similar trend to the change in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations. It rose sharply from 1300 LST on August 4, at the time where it was expected to have been affected by the Nishinoshima Volcano. This study has shown that the occurrence of high concentration fine particle in Busan in summer has the potential to affect Korea not only due to anthropogenic factors but also from natural causes such as volcanic eruptions in Japan.

수용모델을 이용한 청주시 미세입자($PM_{2.5}$)의 기여도 추정 (Source Identification of Fine Particle($PM_{2.5}$) in Chongju Using a Chemical Mass Balance Model)

  • The data set was collected on fifty-eight different days with a 24-h sampling period from October 27, 1995 through August 25, 1996. From the chemical mass balance (CMB) analysis of $PM_{2.5}$ in the Chongju area, the contributions from soil, gasoline, diesel, light and heavy oil combustion were 2.6%, 15.4%, 9.0%, 28.8% and 1.5%, respectively. Residual $NO_{3}^{-}$), residual $SO_{4}^{2-}$ and residual OC, possibly formed in the atmosphere. represented additional 8.0, 10.2, and 1.6% of the $PM_{2.5}$, respectively. Other unidentified sources constituted the remaining 22.9%. From the CMB analysis, the $PM_{2.5}$ source contribution for fall, winter, spring and summer were 92, 76.8, 77.5 and 59.2%, respectively.

배양액 용량이 B6D2F1 마우스 배아발생능력에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Different Volume of Microdrop Culture on B6D2F1 Mice Oogenesis)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different volume ($100{\mu}l$ vs. 2 ml) of microdrop culture on B6D2F1 mice oogenesis. In the present study, B6D2F1/CrljOri $F_1$ mice were utilized in order to maximize oogenesis. Also we used TCM-199, Dulbecco's medified Eagle's medium (DMEM), embryo culture medium (Fertilization medium, Cleavage medium, Blastocyst medium), G series medium and One step medium. Blastulation rate was not different between groups ($58.4{\pm}2.9%$ vs. $61.2{\pm}4.8%$). Zona hatched rate ($38{\pm}15.4%$ vs. $27{\pm}3.4%$) and attached rate ($55{\pm}13.9%$ vs. $46{\pm}3.9%$) did not differ by the volume of culture media. Total cell numbers ($59.8{\pm}9.7$ vs. $70.3{\pm}8.7$), ICM cell numbers ($15.8{\pm}0.6$ vs. $16.8{\pm}1.5$), TE cell numbers ($44.0{\pm}9.7$ vs. $53.6{\pm}7.3$), % ICM ($26.4{\pm}2.9%$ vs. $23.8{\pm}3.3%$) and ICM:TE ratio ($1:2.8{\pm}0.4$ vs. $1:3.2{\pm}0.6$) were not different between groups (i.e., $100{\mu}l$ vs. 2 ml). These results show that the capacity of the culture medium did not effect the cell numbers of B6D2F1 mice blastocysts. In summary, these results can provide fundamental data to maximize culture condition for in vitro fertilization on B6D2F1 mice.

제철소 주변지역의 대기 중 미세먼지 및 중금속 농도에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Concentration of Fine Particles and Heavy Metals in Iron Works)

  • The results of particulate matters level and heavy metal concentration, which surveyed in Gwang-Yang, Dang-Jin steel industry area, are as follows; The $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_{10}$ of exposure area are $22.3{\mu}g/m^3$, $40.4{\mu}g/m^3$ each in Kum-Ho dong, and $28.1{\mu}g/m^3$, 51.5 each in Jung dong. The $PM_{2.5}$, $PM_{10}$ of control area are $16.4{\mu}g/m^3$, $29.5{\mu}g/m^3$ each in Bonggang-myeon. The level is higher in exposure area than control area. In case of Dang Jin, the concentration of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ is higher in exposure area than control area ($PM_{2.5}-20.4{\mu}g/m^3$, $PM_{10}-39.2{\mu}g/m^3$). The Pb level of Dang Jin area is higher in exposure area ($0.13{\mu}g/m^3$) than control area ($0.1{\mu}g/m^3$) and both Gwang-Yang and Dang-Jin area lower level than the Guideline level of Korea EPA.

거골 박리성 골연골염의 관절경적 변연 절제술과 다발성 천공술의 비교 (Comparison of Arthroscopic Debridement and Multiple Drilling for Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Talus)

  • 목적: 거골 박리성 골연골염에서 관절경적 단순 변연 절제술과 다발성 천공술을 이용한 치료의 유효성을 평가하고 그 결과를 비교하여 보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 1997년 9월부터 2003년 12월까지 거골의 박리성 골연골염으로 진단되어 관절경적 수술을 시행한 후 1년 이상 추시가 가능했던 환자 29명(남자 21명, 여자 8명)을 대상으로 하였으며, 14명의 환자는 변연 절제술(I 군)을, 15명의 환자는 다발성 천공술(II군)을 시행하였다. 환자의 평균 나이는 34.4세(I군 33.8세, II군 37.5세)였고, 평균 추시기간은 43.2개월(I군 46.4개월, II군 40.1개월)이었다. 수술 전 단순 방사선 사진과 자기공명영상 검사를 촬영하고 관절경을 통해 병변의 진행 정도를 확인하였고, Ankle-hindfoot 점수와 주관적 및 객관적 기능 점수를 측정하여 그 결과를 비교하였다. 결과: 병변의 위치는 내측이 20예(I군 7예, II군 13예) 외측이 6예(I군 5예, II군 1예1)였으며 내외측에 모두 병변이 있는 경우가 3예(I군 2예, II군 1예)가 있었다. 병변의 진행정도는 Berndt 와 Harty의 분류상 II기가 4예(I군 4예, II군 0예), III기가 19예(I군 9예, II군 10예), IV기가 6예(I군 1예, II군 5예)였다. Ankle-hindfoot 점수는 술전 $53.9{\pm}5.2$점(I군 $53.1{\pm}2.7$점, II군 $54.6{\pm}6.8$점)에서 술후 $82.3{\pm}8.8$점(I군 $85.1{\pm}8.5$점, II군 $80.7{\pm}8.5$점)으로 향상되었으며, 주관적 및 객관적 기능 점수는 술전 $50.2{\pm}9.7$점(I군 $49.6{\pm}10.5$점, II군 $50.7{\pm}9.2$점)에서 술후 $83.8{\pm}8.6$(I군 $84.6{\pm}7.7$점, II군 $83.0{\pm}9.6$점)으로 향상되었다. 두 군 간의 비교에서 유의한 차이는 보이지 않았다. 결론: 관절경적 변연 절제술과 다발성 천공술은 두 군 모두에서 만족할만한 결과를 얻었으며 두 군 사이에 임상적 결과의 차이는 없었다.

PHYSICAL PARAMETERS OF THE OLD OPEN CLUSTER TRUMPLER 5

  • We present a study of the old open cluster Trumpler 5 (Tr 5), based on the CDS archival data. From the color-magnitude diagrams of Tr 5, we have found the positions of main-sequence turn-off (MSTO) and red giant clump (RGC) stars. Using the mean magnitude of the RGC stars, we have estimated the reddening toward Tr 5, E(B - V) = 0.60 $\pm$ 0.10. Using the stars common in two data sets and the theoretical isochrones of Padova group, we have estimated the distance modulus $V_o - M_v = 12.64 {\pm} 0.20 (d = 3.4 {\pm} 0.3 kpc)$, the metallicity [Fe/H) = -0.30 $\pm$ 0.10, and the age of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.2 Gyr (log t = 9.38). These metallicity and distance values are consistent with the relation between the metallicity and the Galactocentric distance of other old open clusters, for which we obtain the slope of ${\Delta}[Fe/H]/ R_{gc} = -0.064 {\pm} 0.010\;dex\;kpc^{-1}$.

Comparison of Developmental Competency of Porcine Embryos Cloned with Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Somatic Cells

  • The present study compared the developmental potential of cloned porcine embryos with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), fetal fibroblasts (FFs) and cumulus cells (CCs) by assessing the cleavage and blastocyst rate, total cell number, inner cell mass (ICM) ratio and apoptosis. MSCs were isolated by ficoll gradients from femur of -6 month old female pig, and maintained for primary cultures. FFs from a female fetus at ${\sim}30$ day of gestation were established, and CCs were obtained from cumulus oocyte complexes (COCs) aspirated from $3{\sim}6$ mm follicles in diameter. Donor cells at $3{\sim}4$ passage were employed for nuclear transfer (NT). COCs were matured and fertilized in vitro(IVF) as control. Cleavage rate was significantly (P<0.05) higher in IVF than in NT embryos with MSCs, FFs and CCs ($82.7{\pm}8.9%\;vs\;70.6{\pm}5.4,\;68.7{\pm}5.1\;and\;63.4{\pm}5.6%$, respectively). However, blastocyst rates in IVF and NT embryos derived from MSCs ($24.5{\pm}2.8\;and\;20.4{\pm}8.3%$) did not differ, but were significantly (P<0.05) higher than NT derived from FFs and CCs ($10.6{\pm}2.7\;and\;9.8{\pm}2.1%$). Total cell number and the ratio of ICM to total cells among blastocysts cloned from MSCs ($35.4{\pm}5.2\;and\;0.40{\pm}0.09%$, respectively) were significantly (P<0.05) higher than those from FFs and CCs ($24.9{\pm}6.2%\;vs\;0.19{\pm}0.16,\;23.6{\pm}5.5\;and\;0.17{\pm}0.16%$, respectively). Proportions of TUNEL positive cells in NT embryos from FFs and CCs ($6.9{\pm}1.5\;and\;7.4{\pm}1.7%$, respectively) were significantly (P<0.05) higher than in MSCs ($4.8{\pm}1.4%$) and IVF ($2.3{\pm}0.9%$). The results demonstrate that MSCs have a greater potential as donor cells than FFs and CCs in achieving enhanced production of cloned porcine embryos.
