$Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes Classification is based on input variables that are a conditionally independent given output variable. The $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes assumption is unrealistic but simplifies the problem of high dimensional joint probability estimation into a series of univariate probability estimations. Thus $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes classier is often adopted in the analysis of massive data sets such as in spam e-mail filtering and recommendation systems. In this paper, we propose a variable selection method based on ${\chi}^2$ statistic on input and output variables. The proposed method retains the simplicity of $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes classier in terms of data processing and computation; however, it can select relevant variables. It is expected that our method can be useful in classification problems for ultra-high dimensional or big data such as the classification of diseases based on single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs).
As the Internet becomes more popular, many people use it to communicate. With the increasing number of personal homepages, blogs, and social network services, people often expose their personal information online. Although the necessity of those services cannot be denied, we should be concerned about the negative aspects such as personal information leakage. Because it is impossible to review all of the past records posted by all of the people, an automatic personal information detection method is strongly required. This study proposes a method to detect or classify online documents that contain personal information by analyzing features that are common to personal information related documents and learning that information based on the Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes algorithm. To select the document classification algorithm, the Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes classification algorithm was compared with the Vector Space classification algorithm. The result showed that Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes reveals more excellent precision, recall, F-measure, and accuracy than Vector Space does. However, the measurement level of the Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes classification algorithm is still insufficient to apply to the real world. Lewis, a learning algorithm researcher, states that it is important to improve the quality of category features while applying learning algorithms to some specific domain. He proposes a way to incrementally add features that are dependent on related documents and in a step-wise manner. In another experiment, the algorithm learns the additional dependent features thereby reducing the noise of the features. As a result, the latter experiment shows better performance in terms of measurement than the former experiment does.
Social bookmarking systems are a typical web 2.0 service based on folksonomy, providing the platform for storing and sharing bookmarking information. Spammers in social bookmarking systems denote the users who abuse the system for their own interests in an improper way. They can make the entire resources in social bookmarking systems useless by posting lots of wrong information. Hence, it is important to detect spammers as early as possible and protect social bookmarking systems from their attack. In this paper, we applied a diverse set of machine learning approaches, i.e., decision tables, decision trees (ID3), $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes classifiers, TAN (tree-augment $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes) classifiers, and artificial neural networks to this task. In our experiments, $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes classifiers performed significantly better than other methods with respect to the AUC (area under the ROC curve) score as veil as the model building time. Plausible explanations for this result are as follows. First, $na{\ddot{i}}ve$> Bayes classifiers art known to usually perform better than decision trees in terms of the AUC score. Second, the spammer detection problem in our experiments is likely to be linearly separable.
The paper presents three machine learning based keyphrase extraction methods that respectively use Decision Trees, Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes, and Artificial Neural Networks for keyphrase extraction. We consider keyphrases as being phrases that consist of one or more words and as representing the important concepts in a text document. The three machine learning based keyphrase extraction methods that we use for experimentation have been compared with a publicly available keyphrase extraction system called KEA. The experimental results show that the Neural Network based keyphrase extraction method outperforms two other keyphrase extraction methods that use the Decision Tree and Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes. The results also show that the Neural Network based method performs better than KEA.

Fingerprint classification reduces the number of matches required in automated fingerprint identification systems by categorizing fingerprints into a predefined class. Support vector machines (SVMs), widely used in pattern classification, have produced a high accuracy rate when performing fingerprint classification. In order to effectively apply SVMs to multi-class fingerprint classification systems, we propose a novel method in which SVMs are generated with the one-vs-all (OVA) scheme and dynamically ordered with $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes classifiers. More specifically, it uses representative fingerprint features such as the FingerCode, singularities and pseudo ridges to train the OVA SVMs and $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes classifiers. The proposed method has been validated on the NIST-4 database and produced a classification accuracy of 90.8% for 5-class classification. Especially, it has effectively managed tie problems usually occurred in applying OVA SVMs to multi-class classification.

Recently due to large-scale data spread in digital economy, the era of big data is coming. Through big data, unstructured text data consisting of technical text document, confidential document, false information documents are experiencing serious problems in the runoff. To prevent this, the need of art to sort and process the document consisting of unstructured text data has increased. In this paper, we propose a novel text classification scheme which learns some data sets and correctly classifies unstructured text data into two different categories, True and False. For the performance evaluation, we implement our proposed scheme using $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes document classifier and TF-IDF modules in Python library, and compare it with the existing document classifier.

With rapid growth of web technology and dissemination of smart devices, social networking service(SNS) is widely used. As a result, huge amount of data are generated from SNS such as Twitter, and sentiment analysis of SNS data is very important for various applications and services. In the existing sentiment analysis based on the $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes algorithm, a same number of attributes is usually employed to estimate the weight of each class. Moreover, uncountable and meaningless attributes are included. This results in decreased accuracy of sentiment analysis. In this paper two methods are proposed to resolve these issues, which reflect the difference of the number of positive words and negative words in calculating the weights, and eliminate insignificant words in the feature selection step using Multinomial $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes(MNB) algorithm. Performance comparison demonstrates that the proposed scheme significantly increases the accuracy compared to the existing Multivariate Bernoulli $Na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes(BNB) algorithm and MNB scheme.

In this paper, we propose a new classification method to complement a $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayesian classifier. This classifier assumes data distribution to be Gaussian, finds the discriminant function, and derives the decision curve. However, this method does not investigate finding the decision curve in much detail, and there are some minor problems that arise in finding an accurate discriminant function. Our findings also show that this method could produce errors when finding the decision curve. The aim of this study has therefore been to investigate existing problems and suggest a more reliable classification method. To do this, we utilize the gradient to find the decision curve. We then compare/analyze our algorithm with the $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayesian method. Performance evaluation indicates that the average accuracy of our classification method is about 10% higher than $na{\ddot{i}}ve$ Bayes.
Social media refers to the content, which are created by users, such as blogs, social networks, and wikis. Recently, question-answering (QA) communities, in which users share information by questions and answers, are regarded as a kind of social media. Thus, QA communities have become a huge source of information for the past decade. However, it is hard for users to search the exact question-answer that is exactly matched with their needs as the number of question-answers increases in QA communities. This paper proposes an approach for classifying a question into three categories (information, opinion, and suggestion) according to the purpose of the question for more accurate information retrieval. Specifically, our approach is based on modified Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes classifier which uses structural characteristics of QA documents to improve the classification accuracy. Through our experiments, we achieved about 71.2% in classification accuracy.
