The Effect of $Mg^#$, $Ca^#$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and Creatine Phosphate on the ATPase Activity of Microsomal Fraction from Rabbit Uterus (가토자궁근(家兎子宮筋)에서 분리(分離)한 Microsome 분획내(分劃內) Adenosinetriphosphatase 활성도(活性度)에 미치는 $Mg^#$, $Ca^#$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ 및 Creatine phosphate의 영향(影響))

  • The author investigated the effect of $Mg^#$, $Ca^#$, $Na^+$, $K^+$ and creatine phosphate on the ATPase activity of microsomal fraction isolated from rabbit uterus and obtained the following results : 1) The uterine microsomal fraction contained the $Na^+-$ and $K^+-$ activated ATPase in the presence of $Mg^#$. The ATPase activity increased with protein content in the fraction. 2) The maximum ATPase activity was obtained at $Na^+$ and $K^+$ concentraction of 100 mM respectively. 3) In the absence of $Mg^#$, the ATPase was not activated by $Na^+$ and $K^+$, but inhibited. 4) Car stimulated the $Na^+-$ and $K^+-$ activated ATPase in the presence of $Mg^#$. However, in the absence of $Mg^#$, the ATPase was not activated by $Ca^#$. 5) The $K^+-$ activated ATPase activity was greater than the $Na^+-activated$ ATPase under all conditions. 6) The $Na^+-$ and $K^+$ activated ATPase activity was increased by addition of creatine phosphokinase and creatine phosphate to the reaction mixture.

The Electrochemical Properties and Mechanism of Formation of Anodic Oxide Films on Mg-Al Alloys

  • The electrochemical properties and the mechanism of formation of anodic oxide films on Mg alloys containing 0-15 mass% Al, when anodized in NaOH solution, were investigated by focusing on the effects of anodizing potential, Al content, and anodizing time. The intensity ratio of Mg(OH)₂ in the XRD analysis decreased with increasing applied potential, while that of MgO increased. Mg(OH)₂ was barely detected at 80 V, while MgO was readily detected. The anti-corrosion properties of anodized specimens at each constant potential were better than those of non-anodized specimens. The specimen anodized at an applied potential of 3 V had the best anti-corrosion property. The intensity ratio of the β phase increased with aluminum content in Mg-Al alloys. During anodizing, the active dissolution reaction occurred preferentially in β phase until about 4 min, and then the current density increased gradually until 7 min. The dissolution reaction progressed in α phase, which had a lower Al content. In the anodic polarization test in 0.017 mol·$dm^{-3}$ NaCl and 0.1 mol·$dm^{-3}$ Na₂SO₄ at 298 K, the current density of Mg-15 mass% Al alloy anodized for 10 min increased, since the anodic film that forms on the α phase is a non-compacted film. The anodic film on the α phase at 30 min was a compact film as compared with that at 10 min.

Evaluation of nutritional adequacy after investigating amino acid and mineral content in pet food distributed in South Korea

  • Among the nutrients in feed, amino acids and minerals are important for the growth and development of pets. In particular, interest in nutritional components related to the health of pets is increasing as pet-raising households and pet food markets have recently grown. Therefore, in this study, 55 pet food products distributed in South Korea were purchased, and the content of 3 essential and conditionally essential amino acids (taurine, lysine, arginine) and 4 minerals (Ca, P, Na, K) was investigated. Among the three amino acids, arginine was found to have the highest content, and the average content was 1.79 and 1.37 % in cat and dog foods, respectively. On the other hand, the taurine content was the lowest, but it was found to be higher than the minimum requirement of 0.10 % for cats set by the American Association for Feed Control (AAFCO) and the European Federation of Pet Food Industries (FEDIAF). As a result of the four-component analysis of minerals, the content of Ca was found to be the highest, and the average content was confirmed to be 1.64 and 1.25 % in cat and dog food, respectively. On the other hand, Na was the lowest, but it was higher than the AAFCO minimum requirement and FEDIAF minimum requirement for young cat and dog food. Among all 55 samples examined, the content of the three amino acids and the four inorganic components was confirmed to be suitable for the recommended minimum intake and maximum allowable intake presented by AAFCO and FEDIAF.

  • Sodium is an essential nutrient with very important functions, including regulation of the extracellular fluid volume and active transport of molecules across the cell membranes. Since high levels of dietary sodium are associated with a high prevalence of hypertension, prehypertension, and other adverse effects on health, many national and international health organizations (WHO, FAO, etc.) recommend that sodium intake should be significantly decreased. In developed nations, cheese products, from among many processed foods, can cause high salt intake. Hence, there is an urgent need to reduce the content of salt in cheese processing, using various substitutes of sodium chloride (NaCl). In general, salt (NaCl) has been used as a food preservative to limit and (or) kill the growth of foodborne pathogens and spoilage organisms by decreasing the water activity, and to improve texture and flavor. To maintain public health, the salt content in cheese should be decreased without influencing the physicochemical properties of cheese. Therefore, the objective of this review is to outline the upcoming technologies used to reduce the salt content in different types of cheese using various substitutes.

The Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Feather Meal Digests on the Performances and Muscular Taurine Contents in Broiler Chickens (육계 사료내 우모 Digest 첨가시 생산성과 계육내 Taurine 함량에 미치는 영향)

A total of 100 broiler chickens were assigned to five dietary treatments; Control, PM diet(FM), NaOH treated FM diet(NaOH-FM), HN03 treated FM diet(HN03 - FM) and 0.5% synthetic taurine supplemented diet(Taurine). Treated diets were supplemented with FM or FM digests at the level of 5% to the control diet Treated diets were fed during the last 3wks of 6wks feeding. During the finisher period, weight gain of chicks fed FM treatments tended to decrease in general. Feed intakes of FM and Taurine were significantly lower than the control but were not significantly different from NaOH - FM or HN03- PM. Feed conversion rate(feed intake/gain) of NaOH-FM was significantly higher than those of FM and HNOJ - FM but not different from those of the control and Taurine. Taurine content of the control was highest in heart muscle(1482 J1.g/g) followed by leg muscle(778f.lg/g) and breast muscle(79 J1.g/g). Taurine contents of leg and breast muscle were significantly(P< 0.01) affected by treatments but that of heart muscle was not. Taurine content of Taurine treatments was highest in both leg and breast muscle. Taurine content of leg muscle was increased 170"10 by Taurine supplementation, 123% by FM supplementation, 122% by NaOH - FM supplementation and 63% by HNOJ- FM supplementation compared with control. Taurine content of breast muscle of Taurine treatment was 246% higher than the control, but other treatments were not different from the control. In conclusion, supplementation of feather meal at 5% level of broiler diet can enrich taurine content of leg muscle. Chemical treatments of FM were not effective in improving taurine enrichment of broiler meat.

Role of Intracellular Taurine in Monensin-induced $Na^+,\;Ca^{++}$ Accumulation and Mechanical Dysfunction in Isolated Rat Hearts

  • It has been postulated that the intracellular taurine is co-transported with $Na^+$down a concentration gradient and prevents the intracellular accumulation of sodium. It is therefore, expected that an elevated level of intracellular taurine prevents the sodium-promoted calcium influx to protect the cellular damages associated with sodium and calcium overload. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of intra- and extracellular taurine on the myocardial $Na^+$and$Ca^{++}$ contents and the cardiac functions in isolated rat hearts which were loaded with sodium by monensin, a $Na^+-ionophore$. Monensin caused a dose-dependent increase in intracellular $Na^+$ accompanied with a subsequent increase in intracellular $Ca^{++}$ and a mechanical dysfunction. In this monensin-treated heart, myocardial taurine content was decreased with a concomittent increase in the release of taurine. The monensin-induced increases in intracellular $Na^+$, $Ca^{++}$ and depression of cardiac function were prevented in the hearts of which taurine content had been increased by high-taurine diet. Conversely, in the hearts of which taurine concentration gradient had been decreased by addition of taurine in the perfusate, the monensin-induced increases in $Na^+$, $Ca^{++}$ and functional depression were accelerated. These results suggest that taurine, depending on the intra-extracellular concentration gradient, can affect intracellular sodium and calcium concentrations, and that an increased intracellular taurine may play a role in protection of myocardial dysfunction associated with the sodium and calcium overload.

Mineral Contents of Spinach and Broccoli Blanched by Conventional Methoed (재래적 방법을 이용한 조리방법에 따른 상용채소의 무기질 함량 변화 -시금치와 브로커리 -)

  • The effect of time and amount of water by conventional blanching method on the retention minerals in spinach and broccoli was investigated. The vegetables were blanched for 1, 2, 3 and 4 minutes, with 150 $m\ell$, 300 $m\ell$, 450 $m\ell$ of water for every 100 g of raw material. Blanching of spinach showed that Na was reduced remarkably after 2 minute of blanching, the others (K, Fe, Ca, Mg, P, Cu) were gradually decreased as the blanching time increased. Blanching of broccoli showed that the content of minerals were reduced remarkably after 1 minute of blanching. The longer blanching time further reduced the content of minerals. The retention of minerals (Na, K, Fe, Ca, Mg, P, Cu) in spinach and broccoli was reduced gradually as the blanching water increased. The retention rate of minerals were 12.7% of Na, 37.4% of K, 37.1% of Fe, 43.9% of Ca, 39.0% of Mg, 53.5% of P, 56.2% of Cu in spinach and 21.0% of Na, 41.3% of K, 57.8% of Fe, 38.8% of Ca, 51.5% of Mg, 57.7% of P, 44.4% of Cu in broccoli for 4 min, with water 450$m\ell$ every 100g of raw material.

Solute patterns of four halophytic plant species at Suncheon Bay in Korea

  • To investigate the solute pattern of salt marsh plants in Suncheon Bay in Korea, plants and soil samples were collected at three sites from July to September 2011. The soil pH around the investigated species was weakly alkaline, 6.9-8.1. The total ion and Cl- content of site 1 gradually increased, while those of site 2 and site 3 were lowest in August and highest in September. The exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $K^+$ in the soil were relatively constant during the study period, but the soil exchangeable $Na^+$ content was variable. Carex scabrifolia and Phragmites communis had constant leaf water content and very high concentrations of soluble carbohydrates during the study period. However, Suaeda malacosperma and S. japonica had high leaf water content and constant very low soluble carbohydrate concentrations. Carex scabrifolia accumulated similar amounts of $Na^+$ and $K^+$ ions in its leaves. Phragmites communis contained a high concentration of $K^+$ ions. Suada japonica and S. malacosperma had more $Na^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions than $K^+$ ions in their leaves. Suaeda japonica had higher levels of glycine betaine in its leaves under saline conditions than C. scabrifolia and P. communis. Consequently, the physiological characteristics of salt marsh chenopodiaceous plants (S. japonica and S. malacosperma) were the high storage capacity for inorganic ions (especially alkali cations and chloride) and accumulation of glycine betaine, but monocotyledonous plant species (C. scabrifolia and P. communis) showed high $K^+$concentrations, efficient regulation of ionic uptake, and accumulation of soluble carbohydrates. These characteristics might enable salt marsh plants to grow in saline habitats.

Study of enhanced physical and pervaporation properties in composite membrane

  • Novel mixed matrix membranes of Sodium Alginate (NaAlg) were developed by the incorporation ofunmodified, modified Phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) then cross-linked with glutaraldehyde externally. These membranes were prepared by the solution casting technique. Pervaporation (PV) experiments have been performed with pure NaAlg, unmodified NaAlg-PMA5, NaAlg-PMA10, modified NaAlg-mPMA5, and NaAlg-mPMA10 (wt. % of PMA 5 and 10) at 30, 40 and $50^{\circ}C$, to separate water-isopropanol feed mixtures containing 10-30 wt. % of water. Pervaporation results of NaAlg-mPMA10 produced a highest separation factor of 9028 with a flux of $0.269kg/m^2.h$ for 10 wt. % of water containing feed mixture. Both separation factor and flux for water increased significantly with increasing content of mPMA into NaAlg; a significant improvement in PV performance was observed for NaAlg-mPMA5 and NaAlg-mPMA10 membranes when compared to pure NaAlg& PMA-5, PMA-10 membrane.

Characteristic of Food Waste in Different Types of Restaurants (대중음식점 발생원별 음식물 찌꺼기의 특성)

  • The purposed of this study was to investigate the efficient recycling of food waste according to the restaurants type. To the investigated of characteristic of food wastes in different types of restaurants we were collected the sample of 60 as Korean 35 Chinese 10 Japanese 5 Western 5 Flour 5 in Swoon. The average water content of food waste was 79.9% and Korean restaurant was 80.3% which was hig-her than that of any other serving type. On the examination of a organic matter content of food waste according to the season crude fiber was higher in may and July crude protein content was higher in January and march than that other seasons. The average pH of food waste was 4,74 C/N ratio was 15.8 and the average cation content was K 0.57% Ca 0.39% Mg 0.22% NaCl 3.36% respectively The aver-age concentration of Fe, Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd Ni were 154.37 mg/kg 24.79 mg/kg 0.27 mg/kg 5.63 mg/kg 5.49 mg/kg, 0.31mg/kg 1.07mg/kg respectively.
