This study was conducted to determine the effects of NaCl stress on nitrogen, ${NH_4}^+$, and ${NO_3}^-$ content of 4 barley cultivar seedlings that were cultured for 10 and 30 days with different NaCl levels (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM) contain-ing 1/4 Hoagland solutions. The sodium ion content in the shoot of barley seedlings sharply increased with an increase of NaCl concentration. After 30 days of NaCl treatment, the sodium content of the shoot at 150 mM NaCl was 27 times higher than in non-saline conditions. The sodium content in the root linearly increased with increasing NaCl concentration. Nitrogen content in the shoot linearly increased with increasing NaCl concentration, but nitrogen content in the root declined above the point where the $Na^+$ content was 3.0 mM/g $Na^+$ in the barley seedling. ${NO_3}^-$ content also decreased with increasing NaCl concentration. ${NH_4}^+$ content in the shoot decreased with NaCl condition, but its content in the root increased with NaCl condition. A positive correlation between ${NO_3}^-$ and ${NH_4}^+$ content was found in the shoot, but their relationship was negative in the root.
This study conducted to elucidate the change of the cation content (Na$^{+}$, $K^{+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$), the L-proline content, and the sugar and starch content in the stems, roots, and leaves of three cultivars of the 30 days old seedling soybeans (Glycine max L. cv. Danwonkong, Hwang-keumkong, and Kwangankong) after 100 mM NaCl stress containing 1/2 Hoaglands nutrient solution in the sand culture. The reduction of the dry matter weight after 100 mM NaCl treatment among cultivars was higher in the order of Kwangankong, Danwonkong, and Hwang-keumkong. The highest reduction of the dry matter weight was occurred at the roots among three parts of plant. The Na$^{+}$ content increased with NaCl treatment in overall and specially greatly increased in roots and stems. The $K^{+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ content decreased with NaCl treatment at the roots and stems. The $K^{+}$ content, however, at the leaves increased in all three cultivars with the NaCl treatment. The L-proline content with NaCl stress increased greatly. The increment of the L-proline content at the stems and roots of Hwangkeumkong was lower than that of other two cultivars, K wangankong and Danwonkong. The sugar content decreased with NaCl treatment at the stems and leaves. The starch content also decreased at the stems and leaves with NaCl treatment.aCl treatment.
This experiment was conducted to investigate effects of NaCl concentration on photosynthetic rate, free proline content and ion content in tobacco. As NaCl concentration was increased growth was retarded. The decrease growth characteristics(shoot/root ratio was 2.0) at 90mM NaCl indicated that this concentration could be a limiting level. As NaCl concentration was increased photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and water use efficiency were decreased. Photosynthetic rate was highly decreased at 60mM NaCl. There was no significant difference between transpiration rate and water use efficiency. Leaf water potential was decreased as NaCl concentration was increased, in that twice lower at 30mM than that of control and drop largely at 120mM NaCl. Free proline content was increased as NaCl increased until 120mM NaCl and drop at 150mM NaCl. The $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $K^+$ contents were increased until NaCl concentration was 120mM. The $Na^{2+}$ content was slowly increased as NaCl concentration increased until 120mM NaCl, and largely increased at 150mM NaCl. There was no significant difference between $Cl^-$ and NaCl treatments except 30 mM NaCl in which $Cl^-$ content was higher than that of control. As NaCl concentration was increased $K^+/Na^+$ ratio was decreased. The negative correlation between $K^+$ and $Na^+$, and positive correlation between $K^+/Na^+$ and protein content were found.
Changes in urinary $Na^+$ and $K^+$ excretions, renal cortical microsomal $Na^+$ -K-ATPase activity, cortical tissue electrolyte content and plasma aldosterone level were studied in rats treated with CdCl2 (2 mg Cd/kg/day, s.c. injection) for 7-14 days. After 7 days of cadmium exposure, urinary excretion of $Na^+$ was markedly reduced. This change was accompanied by an increase in $Na^+$-$K^+$-ATPase activity, a fall in tissue $Na^+$ content, a rise in tissue $K^+$ content and an elevation of plasma aldosterone level.
In head lettuce seedlings, NaCl stress was treated with hydroponic culture containing 0, 50, or with 100 mM NaCl in the seedling grown up to two leaf stages. Our focus was on the effect of NaCl on fresh and dry weights, antioxidant materials, and inorganic ion level. Fresh and dry weights of head lettuce seedlings increased with the increase in salinity while the optimal growth occured at 50 mM NaCl. The chlorophyll a (Chl a), total Chl and Chl a/b ratio increased 6 days after treatment with 100 mM NaCI. However, the Chl b content decreased. Total glutathione increased only in the root of head lettuce seedlings, whereas significant increase of total arcorbate content was observed in both shoot and root after the treatment with 100 mM NaCl. In addition, the NaCl treatment resulted in the decreased level of spermidine content, and a increased spermine content. Furthermore, $Na^+$ content in shoot and root increased significantly while $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ content decreased. The alteration of inorganic ion level after treatment with NaCl caused the reduction of $K^+/Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}/Na^+$, and $Mg^{2+}/Na^+$ ratio with the increase of NaCl concentration. Taken together, these findings indicate that the treatment of NaCl causes the induction of oxidative stress, and results in the alteration of metabolic mechanism in head lettuce seedlings.
This study was conducted to obtain basic information of growth, chlorophyll, and $Na^+\;and\;K^+$ content of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings after transplanting in different NaCl conditions. Plants grown in pots for 8 days after germination were grown for 10 days after transplanting in 50 and 100 mM NaCl concentrations. At higher NaCl concentration, plant height, root length, dry weight and chlorophyll content were reduced with NaCl stress. Among rice cultivars, the shoot dry weight of Gancheokbyeo, Janganbyeo and Hwasungbyeo, and the root dry weight of Janganbyeo, Gancheokbyeo and Juanbyeo showed relatively low reduction compared to the other rice cultivars at 100 mM NaCl stress. The $Na^+$ content in seedling rapidly increased with the increase of NaCl concentration but $K^+$ contents decreased. There was a significant relationship between $Na^+$ content and shoot and root dry weight after transplanting rice seedlings to saline conditions. The shoot and root dry weight showed highly negative relationship with the $Na^+/K^+$ ratio in saline conditions.
This study was conducted to determine the morphological responses of barley seedlings to NaCl stress and to investigate histological changes of cells with transmission electron microscope(TEM) after NaCl stress. Plant height and root length of 10-day old barley seedlings with NaCl stress were reduced and inhibition level was found to be more severe in the plant height than in the root length. The leaf length, leaf width and leaf area were shorter as well with NaCl stress than without NaCl stress. However, there was no difference in the number of roots between NaCl treatments. The weight of dry matter decreased at higher NaCl concentrations, especially at 100mM NaCl. The water content of shoots tend to decrease at higher NaCl concentrations, but there was no difference in the water content of roots, The reduced sugar content was greatly increase than starch. Cellulose content was higher in NaCl stressed-plant than control, and tended to decreased at higher NaCl concentrations. Lignin content also decreased NaCl stressed-plant but there was no tendency at NaCl stress concentrations. Electric conductivity of cell sap with seedlings was high with NaCl stressed-plant. Amount of cell sap gradually increased with time in the roots than in the shoots, The grana of chloroplasts was changed by 150mM NaCl concentration. The christe of mitochondria in root meristematic sells ruined in structure and cell wall of leaf and root was also ruined by NaCl stress.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of salinity on the growth and development of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) and to evaluate the inorganic ion content in Korean ginseng with different general complete fertilizer (GCF) and NaCI concentrations at two growth stages. The stem height of Korean ginseng treated with different GCF and NaCI concentrations decreased at the higher EC (2.0 dS m$^{-1}$ ), but there were no significant difference in the stem diameter, the leaf length, and the leaf width among different treatments. The root growth increased with the supply of GCF. Especially, the root growth was facilitated two times at 3.0 dS $\textrm{m}^{-1}$ as compared to control. But the root growth more sharply decreased with NaCI treatment than GCF. The $\textrm{K}^{+}$ and $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ content in leaves and roots increased with GCF at the early growth stage. At the late growth stage, the $\textrm{K}^{+}$ content in leaves decreased but the $\textrm{Ca}^{2+}$ and $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ content increased. The $\textrm{Ca}^{2+}$ and $\textrm{Mg}^{2+}$ content in roots increased but the $\textrm{K}^{+}$ content decreased. The $\textrm{Na}^{+}$ content in Korean ginseng increased sharply with NaCl treatment. The $\textrm{NO}_3^{-}$ content in leaves and $\textrm{NH}_4^{+}$ content in leaves and roots increased as GCF concentration increased. The $\textrm{NO}_3^{-}$ content in leaves, stems, and roots at the late growth stage decreased as NaCl concentration increased. The $\textrm{NH}_4^{+}$ content in leaves and roots decreased significantly at the early growth stage, but it decreased significantly in leaves and stems at the late growth stage. The root activity of Korean ginseng increased with GCF, but decreased as the EC increased with NaCl. The water potential of leaves with GCF showed no significant difference compare to control, but the water potential of leaves treated with NaCl decreased as EC increased.
The salt stress at seedling stage of barley was examined in different concentrations of NaCl containing 1/2 Hoagland solution. Among the physiological factors electric conductivity and sodium content of cell sap outflow solution were increased according to the in-crease of NaCl concentration in 1/2 Hoagland solution but the total protein content of root cell sap outflow solution was decreased. Changing pattern of amino acids content in plant was divided into 3 groups which were increased, decreased or unchanged by NaCl concentration in solution. In normal condition, sugar content in plant was higher than potassium or sodium but if NaCl was added more than 25mM in 1/2 Hoagland solution, sodium was the highest. Potassium content in shoot was decreased as 67% of control at 100mM of NaCl containing solution and in root it was decreased as 8%. Sum of the potassium and sodium content in shoot was seriously increased in accordant with NaCl concentration in culture solution, but in root it was gradually decreased. Chlorophyll content per g fresh weight and photosynthetic ability per $\textrm{cm}^2$ in first leaf were not affected by NaCl concentration of 1/2 Hoagland solution but root activity was slightly decreased compared to control.
This study was conducted to elucidate the changes of photosynthetic ability and cation content in barley cultivar seedlings cultured for 10 and 30 days with different NaCl concentrations containing 1/4 Hoagland solutions. At the highest NaCl concentration, the weight of dry matter and the shoot/root ratio (S/R ratio) were decreased. Thus, shoots were affected more than roots by NaCl treatment. The S/R ratio decreased more in 'Neulssalbori' than in 'Bunong' by the NaCl treatment. The. internal $Na^+$ concentration increased greatly with the highest NaCl concentration, but $K^+$ concentration in plants decreased with the highest NaCl treatment. The $Ca^{2+}$ concentration had a small change with NaCl concentrations. Thus $Na^+$/$K^+$and $Na^+$/$Ca^{2+}$ratios increased with the highest concentration. The chlorophyll content (%/dry weight) of seedlings decreased at higher NaCl levels except for Bunong in 30 day old seedlings. The photosynthetic ability decreased only for Neulssalbori in the 10 days NaCl treatment. The stomatal conductance, and transpiration had decreased in the 10 day old seedlings, but not with 30 day old seedlings.
