Nitrogen Assimilation and Carbohydrate Concentration as Affected by the N Supply Form and Their Level in Shoot of Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) (페레니얼 라이그라스에서 질소공급형태 및 수준에 따른 질소동화와 탄수화물 대사산물의 변화)

  • To investigate the short-term effects of N-supply form ( $NO_3\;^-$ or $NH_4\;^+$ ) and their level (0.2, 1.0 and 6.0 mM) on N assimilation and C metabolism were examined in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). The increase in shoot fresh for $NH_4\;^+$-fed plants much less than $NO_3\;^-$ fed ones. Nitrate concentration in $NO_3\;^-$ -fed plants tended to increase with increasing the supply level, while that of $NH_4\;^+$-fed plants was nearly stable. Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) responded much quickly, showing a proportional increase within 24 h of feeding. NRA in $NO_3\;^-$ -fed plants at 72 h increased by 13.7, 40.3 and 84.0% in 0.2, 1.0 and 6.0 mM $NO_3\;^-$ -fed, but it was not changed in$NH_4\;^+$-fed plants regardless of the supply level. After 72 h of treatment the sugar accumulation in the plants supplied with 0.2 and 1.0 mM -$NH_4\;^+$fed was remarked. After 72 h of feeding, fructan hydrolysis was observed in all levels fur $NH_4\;^+$-fed plants, but only in 6.0 mM for $NO_3\;^-$ -fed plants.

Effect of Daily Protein Allowances during Lay on Egg Production and Feed Cost of Broiler Breeders (육용종계 산란기의 단백질 공급수준이 산란능력과 경제성에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to study the optimum daily protein allowance for broiler breeders of 24 to 64 weeks of age on a control-fed basis, an experiment was carried out with 400 hens of Arbor Acres strain. Four levels of protein allowances were used to supply 18 to 24g of protein per day in 2g increments. As the age of hens increased, a same stepwise increase and decrease in daily energy allotment was used in all treatments. Same amount of calcium, phosphorus, methionine and lysine were supplied in all treatments and throughout laying period. Hen-day egg production was highest in hens receiving 20g protein per day(p<0.05), but there was no significant difference among those fed daily protein ranging 18 to 22g, and increasing the daily protein allotment up to 24g resulted in a significant decrease(p<0.05). Average egg weight showed a trend to increase as the daily protein allowance increase(p<0.05), but no significant difference was found among the hens fed daily protein 20 to 24g. Feed and ME conversion was superior in hens receiving 20g daily protein(p<0.05). CP conversion was increased as the daily protein allowance increase(p<0.05), but there was no significant difference between hens receiving 18 and 20g daily protein. Feed cost required per egg or per kg egg was lowest in hens fed 20g daily protein. It could be concluded that the optimum daily protein allowance was 20g in all performances.

The Effect of Soy Isoflavone Supplementation on Urinary Isoflavone Excretion in Korean Postmenopausal Women (폐경 후 여성에서 이소플라본 공급에 따른 소변 중 이소플라본 배설량 변화에 관한 연구)

  • It is well known that soy isoflavones play beneficial roles in the prevention of chronic diseases such as breast cancer, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. However current data are not sufficient for estimating the level of isoflavone intake. To use the urinary isoflavone excretion as a maker of isoflavone intake,26 participants consumed the isoflavone extract capsule (90 mg soy isoplavones/capsule) daily for 3 months. The study compared effects of pre- and post-isoflavone supplement in the following parameters; physical examination, dietary recalls, and urinary isoflavon excretion. The average age, height and weight were 65.7 years, 149.4 cm, and 57.3 kg. Subjects maintained regular diet pattern, and average daily nutrient intakes between pre- and post- supplementation were not significantly different except vitamin A, carotene and vitamin C. There was no significant difference between pre- and post- supplementation in terms of daily isoflavone intake. The basal urinary isoflavone excretion was 8.37 mg/day (daidzein 6.23 mu genistein 2.14 mg), and average daily excretion rate was IS.8%. Urinary isoflavone excretion was significantly increased, after isoflavone supplementation for 3 months as compared the basal level (p<0.01). Our data suggest that urinary isoflavone level, especially daidzein and genistein, may be a useful maker to estimate isoflavone intake.

Effect of Fertigation Concentration on Yield of Tomato and Salts Accumulation in Soils with Different EC Level Under PE Film House (토양의 EC 수준에 따른 관비공급 농도가 시설토마토 수량과 토양의 염류집적에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the concentration of fertigation for optimum yield and soil management of tomato cultivation in soils with different Electrical conductivity (EC) level under PE film house. The EC levels of soil were adjusted to 1.4, 3.0 and 5.4 dS/m and fertigation concentrations were supplied with 0.0 (groundwater), 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 dS/m, respectively. When the concentration of fertigation was supplied over 3.0 dS/m to soil with EC 1.4 dS/m, the concentrations of $NO_3-N,\;avail.-P_2O_5$, and exchangeable K in soil were increased after the experiment. When fertigation concentration was supplied over 2.0 and 1.0 ds/m to soil with EC 3.0 and 5.4 dS/m respectively, the nutrient were also accumulated in the soil. Thus, the optimum concentrations of fertigation for optimum yield and soil management for tomato cultivation were recommended $1.0{\sim}2.0dS/m$, 1.0 dS/m and ground water (0.0 dS/m) to soils with EC 1.4, 3.0 and 5.4 dS/m, respectively. The fruit weight marketability and marketable yield of tomato were not significant among the treatments at 5% level by LSD. The concentrations of T-N, $P_2O_5\;and\;K_2O$ in tomato leaf were increased with increasing of fertigation concentration whereas the concentrations of CaO and MgO decreased with increasing of fertigation concentration.

Effects of High Phosphorus Supply on Zn and Cu Uptake by Mulberry(Morus alba L.) (고농도(高農度) 인산(燐酸) 수경액(水耕液)중에서 뽕나무의 Zn과 Cu 흡수(吸收))

  • Water culture studies were conducted in the greenhouse with mulberry plants to investigate the nutrient uptake, especially Zn and Cu, under high phosphrous concentration. Mulberry plants were grown with five phosphorus levels(0, 0.2, 0.5, 2.0, 5.0 mM). Leaves and roots were analyzed for water content, total nitrogen, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, total Zn, soluble Zn, Cu, Cl, $NO_3HPO_4$ and $SO_4$. Dry matter increased upto 2.0mM phosphorus level, and then decreased. Water content, total nitrogen, P, K, and Fe in leaves increased with increasing phosphorus level. Total Zn content in leaves showed little change, whereas soluble Zn increased and Cu decreased with increasing phosphorus level. With increasing phosphous level. $SO_4$ and Cl decreased and then sharply increased above 2.0mM phosphorus. Lower uptake of Cu and higher uptake of $SO_4$ and Cl suggest a cause of mulberry yield decline with high accumulation of soil phosphorus.

Response of Nodulation and Leaf Nitrate Reductase Activity of Alfalfa to Exogeneous Nitrate Supply (질산태 질소 공급이 알팔파의 뿌리혹 형성 및 엽중 Nitrate Reductase 활성에 미치는 영향)

  • A full understanding of the interdependence of leaf nitrate (($No_3$ ̄) metabolism and symbiotic nitrogen($N_2$) fixation in legume crops is needed to help maximize the use of both N sources as well as to improve forage quality through the inhibition of leaf nitrate accumulation. The present work examines the effects of added nitrate, the level of which are 0,2,4,8 and 12mM, on the nodule formation and leaf nitrate utilization and on the possibility of inducing nitrate-toxicity to livestocks in two alfalfa varieties, ' Vernal ' of grazing type and ' Victoria ' of hay type. Higher level of exogeneous nitrate resulted in the increased above-ground dry weight. Nodulation was inhibited severely when more than 8mM NO$_3$ ̄ was supplied to alfalfa plants, and leaf nitrate reductase reached a maximunm at 4mM nitrate supply. The $V_{max}$of nitrate reductase in leaves of Vernal was similar to that of Victoria, whereas the $K_m$ of Vernal was higher than that of Victoria. High accumulation of leaf nitrate, $4{\times}10^{-5}$ g/g leaf fresh weight, was shown at 12mM nitrate supply, which was thought to be not enough to induce nitrate-toxicity to livestocks.icity to livestocks.

Dry Matter, Nitrogen Distribution and Organic Reserves Accumulation as Affected by Nitrate Supply Level in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) (질산태 질소의 공급수준에 따른 알팔파의 건물, 질소의 분포 및 저장영양소의 축적)

  • To investigate the effects of the exogenous N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ supply level on the nitrate assimilation and growth during the vegetative growth stage, and on the accumulation of organic reserves during the successive regrowth period, dry matter (DM), the amount of nitrogenous compounds, total N and starch in alfalfa plants grown hydroponically with 0.2, 1.0 and 3.0 mM KN $O_3$ was estimated, respectively, during vegetative growth period and two cycle of regrowth. When compared with DMs and N contents in various N compounds in the organs grown with 1.0 mM N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ , N starvation symptoms were found in 0.2 mM and a depressive effect was observed in 3.0 mM after 10 weeks of vegetative growth. Total starch content in root system gown with 0.2, 1.0 and 3.0 mM N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ during the first regrowth was 50.96, 15.47 and 6.37 mg plant$^{-1}$, respectively. Starch was contained mainly in taproots. The starch content was not significantly changed by 24 days of the second regrowth with 1.0 mM N $H_4$N0$_3$. Total nitrogen content in root system grown with 0.2, 1.0 and 3.0 mM N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ during the first regrowth was 6.66, 8.43 and 11.09 mg plant$^{-1}$ , respectively. Nitrogen was contained mainly in lateral roots; 80% (in 0.2 mM), 74% (1.0 mM) and 76% (3.0 mM) of total nitrogen in root system. Total N content in root system at the end of the second regrowth also closely affected by the N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ supply level during the first regrowth. These results suggest that the level of N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ may strongly influence the accumulation of organic reserves in root system, and that the initial level of organic reserves for the successive regrowth was one of the determinants for shoot regrowth.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary energy and protein levels on milk production in Saanen (Capra hircus) dairy goats fed the diets with the different ratio of forage and concentrate. Four lactating goats in mid lactation ($57.5{\pm}10.8\;kg$ BW) were used in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square with 21-d periods. Animals were randomly allocated to one of the four groups; 10.59 MJ ME/kg and 11.90% CP (TJ), 10.14 MJ ME/kg and 12.73% CP (T2), 9.45 MJ ME/kg and 15.19% CP (T3), 8.75 MJ ME/kg and 16.60% CP DM (T4). Also ratio of forage to concentrate was 49: 51 (Tl), 59: 41 (T2), 74: 26 (T3) and 90: 10 (T4). Intakes of forage and concentrate were linearly increased (p<0.05) with their increasing energy levels in the diets.   • In order to investigate the utilization efficiency of dietary protein in the rat body and effects of dietary fat on its protein metabolism, 51 Sprague-Dawly rats of 6 weeks old weighing approximate)y 106g were subjected to feeding trials for 4 weeks and then subsequently to metabolic trials for 3 weeks using six different diets composed of three different levels of protein (10%, 20% and 30%) with low (20%) and high (40%) fat content for each protein level, total energy being fixed at 4000 Kcal/kg by addition of an appropriate amount of carbohydrate, and the following results were obtained. 1) The body weight gain increased in the low fat diets with increasing protein level whereas it decreased in the high fat diets. Food efficiency also increased in the low fat diets with increasing protein level, but no do deffinitive trend was observed in the high fat diets. The protein efficiency was generally higher at low protein level and tended to decrease as the protein level increased, regardless of the amount of fat intake. 2) As the protein level was increasing, digestibility of dry matters and carbohydrate were decreasing whereas that of protein was slightly increasing. On the other hand, digestibility of fat was always very high regardless of the amounts of dietary protein and fat. 3) The gross energy intake was affected both by protein and fat contents in the diets: The energy metabolism efficiency was decreasing with increasing protein level and at the same protein level the energy utilization was considerably higher in the low fat diets than in the high fat. 4) From the above-mentioned experimental results it may be concluded that the best formula of diet for growing rats is probably composed of 20% protein, 20% fat and 60% carbohydrate.

Effect of Nitrate in Irrigation Water on Iron Reduction and Phosphate Release in Anoxic Paddy Soil Condition (관개용수 중의 질산 이온이 논토양의 철 환원과 인 용출에 미치는 영향)

  • Since ${NO_3}^-$ is amore favorable electron acceptor than Fe, high ${NO_3}^-$ loads function as a redox buffer limiting the reduction of Fe and following release of ${PO_4}^{3-}$ in flooded paddy soil. The effect ${NO_3}^-$ loaded through irrigation water on Fe reduction and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ release in paddy soil was investigated. Pot experiment was conducted where irrigation water containing 5 or 10 mg N $L^{-1}$ of ${NO_3}^-$ was continuously applied at 1 cm $day^{-1}$, and changes of ${NO_3}^-$, $Fe^{2+}$ and ${PO_4}^{3-}$ concentrations in soil solution at 5 and 10 cm depths beneath the soil surface were monitored as a function of time. Irrigation of rice paddy with water containing 5 mg N $L^{-1}$ of ${NO_3}^-$ led to reduced release of $Fe^{2+}$ and prevented solubilization of P at 5 cm depth beneath the soil surface. And application of irrigation water containing 10 mg N $L^{-1}$ of ${NO_3}^-$ could further suppress Fe reduction and solubilization of P through 10 cm depth soil layer beneath the surface. These results suggest that the introduction of high level ${NO_3}^-$ with irrigation water in rice paddy can strongly limit Fe reduction and P solubilization in root zone soil layer in addition to the excessive supply of N to rice plants.
