Effects of mineral salts on sisomicin fermentation were investigated. The optimal concentration of CoCl$_2$for accomplishing a high antibiotic yield was found to be 16.8 $\mu$M at which it could function as a cofactor. At this level the other mineral salts tested had no effect. On the other hand, at much higher concentration levels (above 1 mM), four mineral salts such as ZnSO$_4$, KH$_2$PO$_4$, FeSO$_4$and MgSO$_4$were used in order to liberate the intracellular sisomicin out-side the cells, because the sisomicin accumulated mostly in cells and it was supposed to limit the improvement of antibiotic yield. ZnSO$_4$and KH$_2$PO$_4$had no effect at all, and FeSO$_4$brought about some improvement. However, by keeping the concentration of MgSO$_4$to be 25 mM or higher in culture broths, the antibiotic yield could be improved by more than 100%, partially due to the enhanced liberation of the intracellular antibiotic.
This study has been conducted to give some ideas for reasonable ecological management of Taejon city and its adjacent forest ecosystem against the effect of acid rain. Rain monitoring points to analyse its components represented 1 point in industrial area, 4 points in commercial area, 4 points in residential area, and 5 points in suburban area and forest survey was done in 7 forest sites adjacent to rain monitoring points. Transformed vegetation index(TVI) based on Landsat TM data was analysed for forest area. Taejon area was seriously contaminated by air pollutants and average concentration of anions in precipitation were 20.16mg/l for $SO_4{^{2-}}$, 3.65mg/l for $NO_3{^-}$, and 3.09mg/l for $Cl^-$. Anion in precipitation were $1.09mg/m^2/month$ for $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $0.23mg/m^2/month$ for $NO_3{^-}$, and $0.20mg/m^2/month$ for $Cl^-$. Cation in precipitation were $0.14mg/m^2/month$ for $Ca^{2+}$, $0.10mg/m^2/month$ for $NH_4{^+}$, $0.08mg/m^2/month$ for $Na^+$, $0.07mg/m^2/month$ for $K^+$, and $0.08mg/m^2/month$ for $Mg^{2+}$. The region with the highest concentration of $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $Cl^-$ in rain was industrial area. $SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NO_3{^-}$, and $Cl^-$ concentrations in industrial area were 43.08, 3.88, and 3.64ppm, respectively. Forest soil showed strongly acidic ranging pH4.16-4.94. Transformed vegetation index(TVI) were 3.11 in Dangsan, 4.00 in Kyechoksan, 4.13 in Bomunsan, 4.18 in Kabhasan, 3.34 in Bongsan, 4.13 in Sikchangsan, and 4.20 in Seongchisan. Dangsan forest located near in industrial area showed the lowest TVI.
This study was carried out to analyze chemical compositions of the fog water of a forest area, Jinju and to provide basic information for establishing measures on the acid fog water of forest area. The results are as follows: The pH of fog water was 4.3 in 2010, whereas the pH in 2011 was 4.0. The electrical conductivity of the fog water was $477.2{\mu}s$ in 2010, and $562.7{\mu}s$ in 2011. Among the anions, the concentration of $NO^{3-}$ was the highest, which recorded 267.1 mg/L in spring season and 279.1 mg/L in summer season, followed by $SO{_4}^{2-}$ at the concentration of 177.2 mg/L in spring season and 198.6mg/L in summer season. In autumn and winter, the concentration of $NO^{3-}$ was highest as 217.7 mg/L and 237.9 mg/L, respectively and followed by $SO{_4}^{2-}$, which concentration was 164.2 mg/L in autumn season and 190.1 mg/L in winter season (p<0.05). Among the cations, the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ was 221.3 mg/L in spring and 233.7mg/L in summer, followed by $Na^+$ at 125.1 mg/L in spring season and 131.7 mg/L in summer In autumn and winter, the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ was highest at 196.8 mg/L and 198.8 mg/L, followed by $Na^+$ at the concentration of 97.1 mg/L in autumn and 117.2 mg/L in winter (p<0.05). The pH of the fog rain that causes acid mist showed the correlation with $Ca^{++}$ (1% of level), $EC(r=-0.9861^{**})$, $NO^{3-}$ ($r=-0.9677^{**}$), and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ ($r=-0.9510^{**}$). The regression equation on the factors affecting the generation of acidic fog rain was estimated to be a $Y(pH)=6.4627+0.9723X_2(EC)+0.9364X_4(NO_3{^-})+0.9044X_5(SO{_4}^{2-})+0.8049X_{10}(Ca^{2+})+0.6709X_8(K^+)\;(r^2=0.8787)$.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of magnesium sulfate ($MgSO_4$) during late gestation and lactation on sow and litter performance, fecal moisture, blood biochemistry parameters, immunoglobulin levels and milk composition in sows. Forty-eight sows ($Yorkshire{\times}Landrace$, 4th to 5th parity) were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 dietary treatments supplemented with 0, 200, 400, or 600 mg/kg $MgSO_4$ (n = 12). The experiment started on day 90 of gestation and continued through day 21 of lactation. Blood samples were collected on day 107 of gestation, day 0 (farrowing) and 21 (weaning) of lactation for the analyses of the blood biochemistry parameters and immunoglobulin levels. The colostrum and milk samples were obtained on day 0 and 14 of lactation, respectively. Fecal samples were collected from the sows on day 107 of gestation as well as day 7 and 20 of lactation to determine fecal moisture content. The results showed that the survival percentage of piglets and the litter weight at weaning were decreased linearly (p<0.05) and other parameters of the sow or litter performance were not influenced (p>0.05) by $MgSO_4$ supplementation. The fecal moisture content of the sows were increased (p<0.05) linearly as dietary $MgSO_4$ increased on day 7 and 20 of lactation. Supplementation with $MgSO_4$ increased the plasma magnesium (Mg) level linearly (p<0.05) and had a trend to increase total protein level (p>0.05 and p<0.10). However, an increase in the dietary $MgSO_4$ level resulted in a linear decrease in the colostrum fat content (p<0.05). Dietary $MgSO_4$ supplementation enhanced the immunoglobulin G (IgG) level (linear, p<0.05) in plasma on day of farrowing and immunoglobulin A (IgA) level in colostrum (quadratic, p<0.05) and milk (linear, p<0.05) of the sows. These results indicated that supplementation with $MgSO_4$ during late gestation and lactation may have the potential to prevent sow constipation, but may also result in some negative effects.
Salt accumulation and movement by runoff ware studied in runoff resevior lysimeter constructed in a green house located in the area of Cheongju, Chungbuk province. Average runoff ratio of rainfall within period of this experiment was 58%. The average content of cations lost from field soil by runoff was in the order of $Ca^{2+}(27.12\;mg/L\;)$ > $K^+(9.18\;mg/L)$ > $Mg^{2+}(2.53\;mg/L)$ > $Na^+(1.89\;mg/L)$ and in the care anions $SO_4\;^{2-}(63.38\;mg\;/L)$ > $NO_3\;^-(25.40\;mg/L)$ > $Cl^-(4.19\;mg/L)$ > $PO_4\;^{3-}(3.18\;mg/L)$. Amounts of salt movement by runoff $SO_4\;^{2-}(140.2\;kg/ha)$, $Ca^{2+}(59.9\;kg/ha)$, $NO_3\;^-(56.1\;kg/ha)$, $K^+(20.3\;kg/ha)$, $Cl^-(9.3\;kg/ha)$, $PO_4\;^{3-}(7.0\;kg/ha)$, $Mg^{2+}(5.6\;kg/ha)$ and $Na^+(4.2\;kg/ha)$. The loss amount of $PO_4\;^{3-}$ was the lowest among the anions investigated in this experiment. $P_2O_5$ was accumulated on the soil surface due to strong affinity for the sorption site on the soil particle surface.
Among the 34 strains of Nicotinophiles selected in the previous experiments, strain NCT27 identified with Pseudomonas putida and strain NCT30 identified with Arthrobacter oxydans biotype nan thus were Investigated for optimization of growth conditions for nicotine degradation and other cultural characteristics. The compositions of optimized medium were to be following: $KH_2PO_4$ 2.Ogr, KCI 5.Ogr, $MgSO_4$.$7H_2O$ 20mg, $MnSO_4$.$6H_2O$ 0.2mg, $FeSO_4$.$7H_2O$ 1.Omg, Col$^{++}$ (Cobalt Acetate),2.O$\gamma$, N1$^{++}$ (NiSO4,6H2O) 0.5$\gamma$, and yeast extract 80mg per liter. The optimum initial concentrations of nicotine for growth were 0.4% for Pseudomonas and 0.1% for Arthrobacter, respectively. The optimum temperature and pH were 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 7.0 for both of strains. The pH of culture medium of Pseudomonas was changed from acidic condition to basic one in going from the logarithmic growth phase to the stationary growth phase. In contrast with Pseudomonas, it remained constant in case of Arthrobacter. The growth of Arthrobacter was completely inhibited in the nicotine concentration of 0.7&. However, Pseudomonas could grow even in the nicotine concentration of 1.0%. Moreover, it could grow successfully in the tobacco extract media as well as media containing carbon and nitrogen sources other than nicotine. The maximum rates of nicotine degradation were to be 1.22 gr./hr./liter for Pseudomonas and 0.186 gr./hr./liter for Arthrobacter, respectively.
Nanofiltration was performed with polyaluminium chloride solutions at different pH conditions to understand effects of inorganic compounds on aluminum hydrolysis products, i.e., three distinctive groups of aluminum species: polymeric Al at low pH; $Al(OH)_3$ at neutral pH; and ${Al(OH)_4}^-$ at high pH. The PACl solution was prepared to be approximately 4.0mM and adjusted to the designated pH. The influence of inorganic compounds on Al species fouling was investigated with 4.9mM $CaCl_2$ and 3.5mM $MgSO_4$ because $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ are the most common inorganics in the drinking water. NF membrane fouling was measured by flux decline rate. The impact of $CaCl_2$ was not significant on the individual Al hydrolysis products fouling. However, the flux decline rate was drastically changed in the presence of $MgSO_4$. The concentration of particulate matters was considerably increased possibly due to interaction between Al species and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ where $MgSO_4$ was introduced. The particulates were accumulated on the membrane and enhanced the hydraulic resistance of the cake layer. In addition, conductivity removal of the membrane was decreased when Al-hydroxide was dominant due to reduction of membrane surface charge. The rejection of $Ca^{2+}$and $Mg^{2+}$ were considerably different, which implys that composition of inorganics paly a role on conductivity removal.

Growth responses of Brevibadterium ammoniagenes BA 17-2, which had been obtained by the treatment of several mutagens in our previous report, were investigated to select the preliminary optimal concentrations of phosphate, $Mg^{++}$, $Mn^{++}$ and thiamine for the production of 5'-XMP aminase. In this experiment it was shown that the concentration of phosphate in the medium has an important effect on the growth of microorganism. Using the medium containing 0.2% of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, 3mg/l of $MnSO_4{\cdot}H_2O$and $1\;mg/l$ of thiamine-HCl, the maximum cell mass was obtained at the concentration of 0.4% of $KH_2PO_4$ and $K_2HPO_4$, respectively. Above the concentration of these phosphates, cell growth was inhibited as the phosphate concentration increased to 1%, but the inhibition was overcome by the addition of 1% of $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ and 3mg/l of thiamine-HCl. The 5'-XMP aminase activity was also influenced by the concentration of phosphate, $Mg^{++}$, $Mn^{++}$, and thiamine. In addition, the optimal culture pH and temperature for the enzyme activity were found to be 6.8 and $32^{\circ}C$, respectively.
This study was to optimize the medium components for astaxanthin production in Paracoccus sp. through surface response methodology. A screening test was first conducted on 5 medium components using a Plackett-Burman design, from which $MgSO_4$ and yeast extract were identified as the significant factors affecting astaxanthin production. These significant factors were optimized by central composite design of experiments and response surface methodology, as 2.83 g/L $MgSO_4$ and 7.02 g/L yeast extract, respectively. The expected astaxanthin concentration with these optimized medium compositions were 0.925 mg/L. In flask culture, the experimentally obtained concentration of astaxantin was 1.021 mg/L, where it had been 0.4 mg/L before optimization.
The rejection of hardness in a lactate fermentation broth was investigated by NTR-729 nanofiltration membrane. Firstly, a method for determining membrane surface charge was proposed on the basis of the rejection data for NaCl, $Na_2SO_4$, $MgCl_2$, $MgSO_4$ solutions. It was found that the NTR-729 membrane was negatively charged. The rejection of $Mg^{2+}$ ions in model solution of lactate was over 80% with lactate concentrations. But the rejection of $Mg^{2+}$ ions in fermentation broth of lactate was about 40 %. This results was caused by anions paired with $Mg^{2+}$ ions. It was found that the repulsive force of monovalent anions with membrane was almost few through an experiment of a mixed solution of NaCl/ $Na_2SO_4$. So the rejection of $Mg^{2+}$ ion in a fermentation broth was lower than that in a model solution because $Mg^{2+}$ ions permeated to the membrane with various monovalent anions.
