Effect of MnO2 and CuO Addition on Microstructure and Piezoelectric Properties of 0.96(K0.5Na0.5)0.95Li0.05Nb0.93Sb0.07O3-0.04BaZrO3 Ceramics

  • This study investigates the effect of MnO2 and CuO as acceptor additives on the microstructure and piezoelectric properties of $0.96(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{0.95}Li_{0.05}Nb_{0.93}Sb_{0.07}O_3-0.04BaZrO_3$, which has a rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary composition. $MnO_2$ and CuO-added $0.96(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_{0.95}Li_{0.05}Nb_{0.93}Sb_{0.07}O_3-0.04BaZrO_3$ ceramics sintered at a relatively low temperature of $1020^{\circ}C$ show a pure perovskite phase with no secondary phase. As the addition of $MnO_2$ and CuO increases, the sintered density and grain size of the resulting ceramics increases. Due to the difference in the amount of oxygen vacancies produced by B-site substitution, Cu ion doping is more effective for uniform grain growth than Mn ion doping. The formation of oxygen vacancies due to B-site substitution of Cu or Mn ions results in a hardening effect via ferroelectric domain pinning, leading to a reduction in the piezoelectric charge coefficient and improvement of the mechanical quality factor. For the same amount of additive, the addition of CuO is more advantageous for obtaining a high mechanical quality factor than the addition of $MnO_2$.

  • KNN-based ceramics modified with small amounts of $Bi_4Zr_3O_{12}$ (BiZ) has been synthesized using high-throughput experimentation (HTE). The results from X-ray diffraction show that for samples with base composition $(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})NbO_3$ (KNN), the phase present changes from orthorhombic to pseudo-cubic with more than 0.2 mol% BiZ addition; for samples with base composition $(K_{0.48}Na_{0.48}Li_{0.04})(Nb_{0.9}Ta_{0.1})O_3$ (KNNLT), the phase present changes from a mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal symmetry to pseudo-cubic with more than 0.4 mol % while for samples with base composition $(K_{0.48}Na_{0.48}Li_{0.04})(Nb_{0.86}Ta_{0.1}Sb_{0.04})O_3$ (KNNLST), the phase present is tetragonal with <0.3 mol% BiZ addition and transforms to pseudo-cubic with more dopant addition. The microstructures of the samples show that addition of BiZ decreases the average grain size and increases the volume of pores at the grain boundaries. The values of dielectric constant for KNN and KNNLT compositions increase slightly with BiZ addition while that for KNNLST decreases gradually with BiZ addition. The dielectric loss values are between 0.02 and 0.04 for KNNLT and KNNLST compositions while they are ~ 0.05 for KNN samples. The resistivity values increases with BiZ addition and values in the range of $10^{10}{\Omega}cm$ and $10^{12}{\Omega}cm$ are obtained. The piezoelectric charge coefficient ($d{^*}_{33}$) is highest for KNNLST samples and decreases gradually from ~400 pm/V to ~100 pm/V with BiZ addition.

A gradual change in the crystal and microstructure was observed with the increase of $MnO_2$ addition. For the NKN-LST-xmol%$MnO_2$ sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$, bulk density increased with the addition of $MnO_2$ and showed maximum value at addition 1.0mol% of $MnO_2$. Curie temperature of the NKN-LST ceramics slightly decreased with adding $MnO_2$. The dielectric constant, piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) and electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) increased below 0.25mol% of $MnO_2$ addition, which might be due to the increase in density. The high piezoelectric properties = 145 pC/N, electromechanical coupling factor = 0.421 and dielectric constant = 2883 were obtained for the NKN-LST-0.25mol%$MnO_2$ sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 4h.

Microstructure and Piezoelectric Properties of Low Temperature Sintering (Na,K,Li)(Nb,Sb,Ta)O3 Ceramics (저온소결 (Na,K,Li)(Nb,Sb,Ta)O3계 세라믹스의 미세구조 및 압전특성)

  • In this paper, piezoelectric ceramics with the composition of $(Na_{0.525}K_{0.4425}Li_{0.0375})(Nb_{0.8975}Sb_{0.065}Ta_{0.0375})O_3+0.3wt%\;CoO+x\;CuO$ ($0.005{\leq}x{\leq}0.025$) (abbreviated to NKL-NST) were fabricated for ultrasonic sensor application. The effects of CuO addition and sintering on the microstructure and the piezoelectric properties of the NKL-NST ceramics were systematically studied. Excellent piezoelectric properties such as electromchanical coupling $factor(k_p)=0.415$, piezoelectric constant $(d_{33})=166pC/N$ and piezoelectric figure of merit $d_{{33}*}g_{33}=5.47pm^2/N$ were obtained from the 2.5 mol% CuO doped NKL-NST+0.3 wt%CoO ceramics sintered at $1,000^{\circ}C$ for 3 h.

  • Poling condition in 2 mol% MgO-doped $LiNbO_3$ crystals is investigated by varying the amplitude of poling electric field from 3V/cm to 7V/cm. It is found that 5V/cm is the best value for the formation of single domain by analysing the characteristics of the second harmonic generation(SHG) as the function of temperature. The temperature dependence of the phase-matching profile of SHG for the crystal applied by a spatially modulated electric field is observed to be very different from the simple sinc function. The distorted profile can be consistently fitted with the numerical simulations. This shows that the crystal homogeneity can be tested by the SHG temperature phase-matching profile. In addition, the thermo birefringence coefficient and electro birefringence coefficient of SHG were measured from the temperature dependence of phase-matching profile and shifts of phase-matching temperature by appling electric field along c-axis.

  • In this paper, in order to develop Pb-free piezoelectric ceramics, $[Li_{0.04}(Na_{0.44}K_{0.52})-(Nb_{0.86}Ta_{0.10}Sb_{0.04})]O_3$ ceramic was fabricated with the variation of ZnO addition. Piezoelectric properties of the ceramic were varied with the amount of ZnO addition and showed the maximum kp value at 0.2 wt% ZnO addition. Qm of ZnO added ceramics showed lower values than the non-added ceramics, however, the kp was increased by the addition of ZnO up to 0.2 wt%. At the sintering temperature of 1110$^{\circ}C$ and the calcination temperature of 850$^{\circ}C$, the optimal values of density=473g/$cm^3$, kp=0.473, $\varepsilon_r$=1403 were obtained.

  • 압전액츄에이터 및 초음파진동자는 전자제품의 소형화 및 경량화, 의료기기, 모바일기기 및 소형로붓의 발전에 힘입어 그 활용범위가 넓게 확장되고 있다. 1960년 Smolenski등에 의해 $A(B_1,B_2)O_3$형 복합 페로브스카이트 구조를 갖는 강유전성 세라믹스에 대한 연구가 시작된 이래 $Pb(Co,Nb)O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$, $Pb(Zn,Nb)O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$, $Pb(Mg,Nb)O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ 등 3성분계 세라믹스의 유전, 압전 및 강유전 특성에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 그러나 압전성이 우수한 세라믹스들은 Pb가 포함되어 있기 때문에 $1000^{\circ}C$ 이상에서 PbO가 급격하게 휘발되는 성질에 따라서 조성의 변동이 생겨 재현성이 어려우며 이를 방지하기 위하여 과잉 PbO를 첨가시키기 때문에 환경오염뿐만 아니라, 경제적인 측면에서도 많은 문제점을 가지고 있다. 소결조제를 이용한 산화물 첨가법은 PbO의 휘발을 억제하는 저온소결 방법중 가장 효과적인 방법으로 알려져 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 적층형 압전액츄에이터로 사용하기위한 저온소결 압전세라믹스를 개발하기 위하여 PZN-PZT세라믹스에 $Li_2CO_3$, $Bi_2O_3$, CuO 를 소결조제로 사용하여 $Li_2CO_3$의 첨가량 변화에 따른 압전 및 유전 특성을 관찰하였다.

Low Temperature Sintering and Microwave Dielectric Properties of Ca[Ti1-x(Ni1/3Nb2/3)x]O3 Ceramics (Ca[Ti1-x(Ni1/3Nb2/3)x]O3 세라믹스의 저온소결 및 마이크로파 유전특성)

  • The microwave dielectric properties and low temperature sintering of $Ca[Ti_{1-x}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_x]O_3$ system were investigated at the sintering temperature $1,200\~1,350^{\circ}C$. The density and quality factors $(Q{\times}f)$ increased while dielectric constants slightly decreased with the decrease of Ti. The dielectric constant, quality factor, and temperature coefficient of resonance frequency $(\tau_f)$ were 64, 17,000 GHz, and $-9.1\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ respectively, when $CaTi_{1/2}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1/2}O_3$ ceramics were sintered at $1,300^{\circ}C$ for 4 h. $2Li_2O-B_2O_3$ was added to $CaTi_{1/2}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{1/2}O_3$ to decrease the sintering temperature for LTCC application. The microwave dielectric properties of the samples sintered at $925^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with the addition of $6\;wt\%\;2Li_2O-B_2O_3$ were $\varepsilon_r=48.7,\;Q{\times}f=8,460\;GHz$, and $\tau_f=+5.6ppm/^{\circ}C$. Compatibility test of the composition with silver electrode shows no reaction with silver electrode, implying the feasibility as a high-K LTCC material.
