Data Base Construction of Representative Practical Colors of Domestic Fashion Industry in Korea (국내 패션업계에서 활용되는 대표색의 Color Data Base 구현)

  • The purpose of this study is to make a Web Color Data Base for practical design system for domestic fashion industry. The market segmentation was based on the results of the previous studies and the characteristics of fashion consumers. Finally, the 14,121 color samples are collected from the survey of 55 manufacturers of domestic fashion industry and 116 fashion brands of major department stores. These color samples are analyzed by the Munsell's H V/C and CIE L*a*b* value. The representative colors are selected concerning the density in CIE L*a*b* color space and the distance between the color samples. As a result, We suggested 2213 representative colors. Also, this color data was constructed on Web site. The data were sorted by the market, season and color code. In addition, the representative color sample book was made for the prototype of .

Predicting Unsaturated Soil Water Content Using CIELAB Color System-based Soil Color (CIELAB 색 표시계 기반 토색을 활용한 불포화토 함수비 예측 연구)

  • A study was conducted to use soil color obtained from digital im ages as an indicator of soil water content. Digital images of Jumoonjin standard sand with five different water contents were captured under nine different lighting conditions. Through digital image processing, the soil color of the sample was obtained based on the CIELAB color system, and the effect of lighting conditions and water content on the soil color was analyzed. The results indicated that L* showed a high correlation with illuminance, whereas a* and b* showed a high correlation with color temperature. As the water content increased, L*, which represents the brightness of the soil color, decreased, and a* and b* increased. Therefore, the soil color changed from green and blue to red and yellow. Based on the regression analysis results of lighting conditions, water content, and soil color, a water content predicting method based on the soil color of silica-based sand photographed under irregular light conditions was proposed. The proposed method can predict the water content with a m axim um error of 0.29%.

Objective evaluation of the color of tongue substance using L*a*b* color coordinates

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze whether quantitative evaluation of the color of the tongue substance using $L^*a^*b^*$ color coordinates system could minimize the problems arising from the different illuminating conditions or not. In controlled 4 different illuminating conditions (by natural light, flashlight, f-number, shutter speed),12 healthy subjects were photographed of their tongue substance through a digital camera (C-2100uz, Olympus Co.), both on the top surface and on the bottom surface of the tongue substance by two examiners, twice at 3 day intervals. Clinician evaluation was also performed grading the redness of the tongue substance in the form of 5-points scale by 6 clinicians. As a result, there was no significant difference in color differences between the color of the tongue substance and the reference red card in the 4 different illuminating conditions. Intra-rater reliability was satisfied and even though limitedly, inter-rater reliability was satisfied. Color differences were significantly correlated with the results by the clinicians, although they were applicable limitedly to specific illuminating conditions. Our results indicate that the application of the color differences in tongue diagnosis could not only evaluate the color information quantitatively, but also minimize the problems arising from the different illuminating conditions and that there was the significant difference in the visual evaluation of the red color of the tongue substance, both between the clinicians and between the illuminating conditions.

Studies on the Quality Evaluation of Korean Red Pepper by Color Measurement (색소측정에 의한 고추의 품질평가에 관한 연구)

  • The general properties(size, shape, fruit constituents) of ten different varieties of dried red pepper and the proximate chemical composition, carotenoids content and Hunter color values of their powders were examined in order to establish an objective instrumental method to evaluate the consumer acceptability of red pepper powder. The results of instrumentally measured color values were compared with the sensory acceptability data obtained from 100 housewives in Korea. Red carotenoid consisted of 68-85% of total carotenoids, while ${\beta}-carotene$ content showed close relationship with the sensory color preference. The values of Hunter color system, L,a,b and axL, showed significant relationships with the sensory color preference. Especially, axL value had close relationship with both color preference and pungency intensity of red pepper. Therefore, we suggest the consumer acceptability of red pepper powder can be determined instrumentally by axL value of colorimeter. Sensory acceptability=0.02001(axL)-12.5774

COLORIMETRIC ANALYSIS OF COLOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN DENTIN PORCELAINS (수종의 상아질색도재의 색차이에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the color differences that can exist between different brands of dentin porcelain having identical shade designations. The instrumental colorimetric technique was used to determine these differences. The three brands of dentin porcelain used were Vita VMK-68, Shofu Vintage, and Ceramco II. The three shades selected were the Vita Lumin shades A2, B2, and C2. The color difference values were compared with each other using $L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$, three variables of the CIELAB color system, and ${\Delta}E$. The results of this study were as follows: 1 Corresponding shades of different brands of dentin porcelain produced different $L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$ values. 2. The greatest ${\Delta}E$ value in corresponding shade was found to exist between Ceramco II and Shofu Vintage, followed by between Vita VMK-68 and Ceramco II, and then between Vita VMK-68 and Shofu Vintage. 3. The ${\Delta}E$ values in shade C2 were mainly influenced by ${\Delta}L^*$ value ; however none of ${\Delta}L^*,\;{\Delta}a^*,\;{\Delta}b^*$ values had greater influence on ${\Delta}E$ values than the others in shade A2, B2. 4. Shofu Vintage had the highest $b^*$ value, followed by Vita VMK-68, and then Ceramco II.

Study on Color and Oxidation Thickness for Titanium Spectacle Frames Colored by Anodization (양극산화방법으로 착색한 티타늄 안경테의 산화막 두께에 따른 색상 연구)

  • Purpose: To examine the coloring condition of titanium spectacle frames with various colors by using anodization method. Methods: We made an anodization coater. Platinum plate with $3{\times}3cm^2$ was used for a cathode and titanium spectacle frame specimens was mounted on an anode in an electrolyte. An electric source device were designed to supply steady state current. The color of the coated spectacle frame specimens were measured by a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere. We use CIE $L^*a^*b$ color system as chromaticity coordinates. Results: The thickness of $TiO_2$ of titanium spectacle frame specimens was varied as controlling current flow time for electrodes. The specimens with various kinds of color as a walnut, a yellow brown, a navy blue, a blue, a light blue, a mung bean, a yellowish green, a light purple, a purple, a flower pink, a bluish green, an emerald, and a green color etc. were obtained. The values of CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ for these specimens were measured and analyzed to be changed clockwise in chromaticity coordinates as the thickness of $TiO_2$ increases. Conclusions: We identified the coloring mechanism by anodization method in titanium spectacle frame specimens.

A Study on the color of Daily Clothes of middle Era of the Chosun Dynasty (조선중기 일상복의 색상연구(I)-16.17세기 출토복식 중심-)

  • This study investigates the color of daily clothes of middle era of Yi dynasty by examining the color of excavated clothing which was the real clothes in 16th and 17th centuries. The purposes of this study lie in understanding emotional feeling observed by exact measurement of the color of the excavated and devising a method of reserving the color of the excavated by inspecting the discolored color of the excavated. For this, the color difference was measured by color measuring system. Minolta Chroma-meter, and then recorded in L*a*b system. The 3-dimensional color difference was observed by analyzing these data on Methmetica and change in color with ageing was assessed by reconstructing the color by Phoposhop. The color construction of daily clothes of middle era of the Chosun Dynasty was founded on a philosophy, and it was made up of colors such as white, brown, and blue. This color construction seemed to be based on the philosophy of naturalism symbolizing surrounding nature, e.g., white symbolizes Bak-sasang(bak-philosophy) and blue implies Eumyangohangsul.

Correlation between Internal and External Egg Quality Indicators in the Early Phase of Hy-Line Brown Laying Hens

  • This study investigated correlations between egg quality indicators to identify external egg quality traits to predict internal egg quality using non-destructive and convenient measurements. Thirteen indicators, including Haugh unit, albumen height, eggshell breaking strength, eggshell thickness, eggshell color (CIE L*, CIE a*, CIE b*), and reflectivity value, egg weight, egg length, egg width, shape index, and yolk color, were investigated. A total of 180 brown eggs were obtained from one 27-week-old flock of Hy-line brown-laying hens raised in a cage system. Correlations were evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). The results showed strong correlations between Haugh unit and albumen height, eggshell color CIE L* and reflectivity, egg weight and width, egg weight and length, eggshell color CIE L* and CIE a*, eggshell color CIE a* and reflectivity, and shape index and egg length (P<0.001). Moderate correlations were observed between eggshell breaking strength and eggshell thickness, eggshell color CIE a* and CIE b*, and shape index and egg width (P<0.001). Eggshell color CIE L* was correlated with eggshell breaking strength (P<0.01), and eggshell color CIE a* was correlated with Haugh unit, albumen height (P<0.01), and eggshell breaking strength (P<0.001). The present study showed significant correlations between eggshell color and other quality indicators. Thus, this study suggests that eggshell colors based on reflectiveness and the CIE L*a*b* value can be used to estimate the Haugh unit, albumen height, eggshell breaking strength, and thickness.

The Effect of Veneering Techniques on the Color Parameters of Y-TZP Based All Ceramic Restoration of Varying Ceramic Core Thickness (지르코니아 코어 두께에 따른 전부도재관의 상부도재 축성방법이 보철물 색조에 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of study was to compare the color parameters and mean color difference of porcelain specimens by different veneering technique in order to examine the effect of veneering technique on esthetics of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline(Y-TZP) all ceramic restoration. Three groups of square-shaped core ceramic specimens(14mm in diameter and 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 mm) and two groups of veneering ceramic specimen were prepared for analysis. Color parameter($L^*,a^*,b^*$) and color difference of zirconia core squares and core-veneer specimens were measured with ShadeEye $NCC^{(R)}$ spectrophotometer, respectively. Mean color difference(${\Delta}E^*$)were calculated using color difference formula. Two-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) combined with a Tukey multiple-range test were used to analysis the data(${\alpha}=0.05$). ${\Delta}E^*$ values were not significantly affected by core thickness and veneering porcelain(p=0.083). The color differences(${\Delta}E^*$) of core-veneer specimens with 0.5, 0.7 mm-A1,A2,A3.5 shade were mostly below 3.7 which was within the clinically acceptable range, while color differences between 0.3 mm-A1,A2 showed more than 3.7. All-ceramic system has color characteristics that clinicians have to consider when selecting materials. Also, manufacturers of different porcelain systems must make every effort to achieve color reproducibility.

Calibration for Color Measurement of Lean Tissue and Fat of the Beef

  • In the agricultural field, a machine vision system has been widely used to automate most inspection processes especially in quality grading. Though machine vision system was very effective in quantifying geometrical quality factors, it had a deficiency in quantifying color information. This study was conducted to evaluate color of beef using machine vision system. Though measuring color of a beef using machine vision system had an advantage of covering whole lean tissue area at a time compared to a colorimeter, it revealed the problem of sensitivity depending on the system components such as types of camera, lighting conditions, and so on. The effect of color balancing control of a camera was investigated and multi-layer BP neural network based color calibration process was developed. Color calibration network model was trained using reference color patches and showed the high correlation with L*a*b* coordinates of a colorimeter. The proposed calibration process showed the successful adaptability to various measurement environments such as different types of cameras and light sources. Compared results with the proposed calibration process and MLR based calibration were also presented. Color calibration network was also successfully applied to measure the color of the beef. However, it was suggested that reflectance properties of reference materials for calibration and test materials should be considered to achieve more accurate color measurement.
