  • A new chemosensor based on rhodamine B (1) for $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ was synthesized by one-step condensation reaction of rhodamine B hydrazide and Azo dye. Studying for its fluorogenic and colorimetric behaviors towards various metal ions, extreme sensitivity and selectivity were achieved by the detection of $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ over other commonly coexistent metal ions, which were accompanied by ring opening of a rhodamine spirocycle framework. In acetonitrile, the presence of $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ induces the formation of a Dye 1-ion complex, which was deduced by spectroscopy.

  • Complexation of $Cd^{2+},\;Pb^{2+}\;and\;Hg^{2+}$ ions with four cryptands were studied by potentiometry and solution calorimetry in various weight percent methanol-aqueous solvent at 25${\circ}$C under $CO_2$free nitrogen atmosphere. The stabilities of the complexes were dependent on the cavity size of macrocycles. The $Hg^{2+}$ ion stability constants are higher than those of $Cd^{2+}\;and\;Pb^{2+}$ ion. All the cryptands formed complexes having 1 : 1 (metal to ligand) mole-ratio except for $Hg^{2+}-L_1$ (cryptand 1,2b: 3,5-benzo-9,14,17-trioxa-1,7-diazabicyclo-(8,5,5) heptadecane) and $Cd^{2+}-L_2$ (cryptand 2,2b: 3,5-benzo-10,13,18,21-tetraoxa-1,7-diazabicyclo (8,5,5) eicosane) complexes. $Hg^{2+}-L_1$ complex was a sandwitch type, and the $Cd^{2+}-L_2$ complex showed two stepwise reactions. Thermodynamic parameters of the $Cd^{2+}-L_2$ complex were $6.08(log\;K_1)$, -7.28 Kcal/mol $({\Delta}H_1)$, and $4.78\;(log\;K_2)$, -4.62 Kcal/mol $({\Delta}H_2)$, respectively, for 1 : 1 and 2: 1 mole-ratio. The sequences of the selectivity were increased in the order of $Hg^{2+}\;>Pb^{2+}\;>Cd^{2+}$ ion for $L_3\;and\;L_4$ macrocycles, and the $L_2$-macrocycle has a selectivity for $Cd^{2+}$ ion relative to $Zn^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Pb^{2+}\;and\;Hg^{2+}$ ions. Thus, it is expected that the $L_2$ can be used as carrier for seperation of the post transition metals by macrocycles-mediated liquid membrane because $L_2$ is not soluble in water, and the difference of stability constants of the metal complexes with $L_2$ are large as compared with the other transition metal complexes. The $^1H\;and\;^{13}C-NMR studies indicated that the nitrogen atoms of cryptands have greater affinity to the post transition metal ions than the oxygen atoms, and that the planarities of the macrocycles were lost by complexation with the metal ions because of the perturbation of ring current of benzene molecule attached to macrocycles and counter-anions.

  • FAs and BAs indicated different chemical compositions and physical properties. Leaching of Pb in FAl and Cu in FA2 were 33.2mg/L and 5.92mg/L, these were high concentration above 30 and 2 times respectively in compared to permit level. Leaching of Hg and Cr were about 1/2 of permit level. When diatom was complexly mixed with portland cement, the 28 days compressive strength of mortar with FA2 was similar with that of control mortar. Furtherfore, leaching of heavy metal ions like as Pb, Cu, Hg, Cr was highly reduced.

  • Rhodamine B Hydrazide as a novel fluorescent and colorimetric probe exhibiting remarkably selective fluorescence enhancement toward Hg2+ ion over other 16 metal ions is herein introduced. The probe reacts with Hg2+ ion followed by its spirolactam ring-opening to give a remarkable enhancement of absorption maximum at 550 nm as well as an enhanced fluorescence intensity at 580 nm in aqueous media. Upon titration with Hg2+ ion in various concentration of 10~200 uM, we found that the probe shows a marked color change from colorless to pink, enabling naked-eye detection toward mercury ion. In addition, in the presence of Hg2+ ion, the probe gave rise to change from non-florescence to strong orange fluorescence (Off-On) with a good linearity of R2=0.97. This preliminary results demonstrate that the fluorescent chemosensor we herein introduced can open a new strategy for marked selective and sensitive detection of mercury ions in contaminated soil containing various metal ions.

  • The effects of divalent cations, $Hg^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, Cd^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ on the total ATPase activity of the fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum isolated from rabbit skeletal muscle were investigated. The inhibitory effects of the cations on the enzyme activity increased as the concentrations of the ions increased with the order of efficiency of $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ in the concentration range between 10 and 500$\mu$M. The 50% inhibition for each ion was almost identical with the inhibition constant (Ki) value for each ion. The Ki's were 10, 30 130, and 350$\mu$M for $Hg^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Cd^{2+}$, respectively. $Mn^{2+}$ seemed to be an activator at lower concentrations and an inhibitor at higher concentrations. The presence of the cations did not change the Km values, suggesting that the ions act as a reversible noncompetitive inhibitor on the FSR ATPase. The energy of activation of the enzyme was aproximately 19 Kcal/mole. The presence of the ions decreased the value slightly. A possible mechanism for the reversible noncompetitive inhibitory effect of the cations was discussed.

  • Mercury is a toxic pollutants present in different types of industrial effluents and is responsible for environmental pollution. Removal of Hg(II) ions from synthetic wastewater was studied using the activated biocarbon produced from the leaves of Tridax procumbens (Asteraceae). The particle size of the biocarbon (BC) is in the range of $100-120{\mu}m$. The effects of initial metal ion concentration, pH, contact time, and amount of biocarbon on the biosorption process were studied at temperature of $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Batch experimental studies showed that an equilibrium time of 160 min was required for the maximum removal of Hg(II) at the optimized biocarbon dose of 2.5 g per 100 mL of synthetic wastewater. The optimum pH required for maximum removal (96.5%) of Hg(II) ions was found to be 5.5. The biosorption of metal ions onto activated biocarbon surface is probably via an ion exchange mechanism. The biocarbon can be regenerated with minimum loss. Further, it can be reused without any chemical activation. The findings of the research suggested that, the biocarbon produced from cost effective renewable resources can be utilized for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

  • Three kinds of macro-reticular bead-typed chelating resins having thiol groups were obtained from basic resins like poly(strene-co-divinylbenzene) (PSD) and poly(styrene-co-methyl methacrylate-co-divinylbenzene) (PSMD): the chelating resin (I) was prepared by chloromethylation of phenyl rings of PSD followed by thiolation using thiourea. The chelating resin (ll) was designed to provide enough space to chelate heavy metal ions; one chloromethyl group was obtained by chlorination of hydroxymethyl group provided by reduction of carboxylic ester group of PSMD and another chloromethyl group was obtained by direct chloromethylation of pendent phenyl group using chloromethyl methyl ether. Both of chloromethyl groups were thiolated by using thiourea. The chelating resin (III) was prepared by chlorosulfonation of phenyl rings of PSD followed by thiolation using sodium hydrosulfide. The adsorbtivity toward heavy metal ions was evaluated. The hydrophobic chelating resin (I) with thiol groups showed highly selective adsorption capacity f3r mercury ions. However, the chelating resin (II) with thiol groups showed mere effective adsorption capacity toward mercury ions than chelating resin (I) with thiol groups, and showed some adsorption capacity for other heavy metal ions like Cu$\^$2+/, Pb$\^$2+/, Cd$\^$2+/ and Cr$\^$3+/. On the other hand, the chelating resin (III) which have hydrophilic thiosulfonic acid groups was found to be effective adsorbents for some heavy metal ions such as Hg$\^$2+/, Cu$\^$2+/, Ni$\^$2+/, Co$\^$2+/, Cr$\^$3+/ and especially Cd$\^$2+/ and Pb$\^$2+/.

  • Fast industrial and agricultural expansion result in the production of heavy metal ions (HMIs). These are exceedingly hazardous to both humans and the environment, and the necessity to eliminate them from aqueous systems prompts the development of novel materials. In the present study, a UIO-66 (COOH)2 metal-organic framework (MOF) containing free carboxylic acid groups was post-synthetically modified with L-glutamic acid via the solid-solid reaction route. Pristine and glutamic acid-treated MOF materials were characterized in detail using several physicochemical techniques. Single-ion batch adsorption studies of Pb(II) and Hg(II) ions were carried out using pristine as well as amino acid-modified MOFs. We further examined parameters that influence removal efficiency, such as the initial concentration and contact time. The bare MOF had a higher ion adsorption capacity for Pb(II) (261.87 mg/g) than for Hg(II) ions (10.54 mg/g) at an initial concentration of 150 ppm. In contrast, an increased Hg(II) ion adsorption capacity was observed for the glutamic acid-modified MOF (80.6 mg/g) as compared to the bare MOF. The Hg(II) ion adsorption capacity increased by almost 87% after modification with glutamic acid. Fitting results of isotherm and kinetic data models indicated that the adsorption of Pb(II) on both pristine and glutamic acid-modified MOFs was due to surface complexation of Pb(II) ions with available -COOH groups (pyromellitic acid). Adsorption of Hg(II) on the glutamic acid-modified MOF was attributed to chelation, in which glutamic acid grafted onto the surface of the MOF formed chelates with Hg(II) ions.

  • SiO2-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@SiO2 NPs) were modified by 3-nitrobenzelidenmalononitrile and used as green linkages for removal of Hg2+ form the wastewater. In this research, it has been attempted to refer to the harmful effects of mercury ions for living things and how to remove such ions using very easy and practical technique. This study shows that by optimizing the test conditions, the efficiency of the removal of harmful ions such as mercury from the water contaminated with these ions can be increased. Conditions such as temperature, speed of agitation, pH of solution were tested for removal of mercury ions. The advantages of this method over other methods listed in the article are the rapid and easy nanocry synthesis. The generated and modified Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy spectroscopy. The results show that the synthesized magnetic nanoparticles have the excellent performance for the removal of mercury(II) ion from the waste water.

  • In the addition condensation reaction of m-phenylenediamine(MPD) and resorcinol (RES) with formaldehyde, the suspension polymerization in liquid paraffin was performed and the bead polymers were obtained with good results. The polymers were treated with dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions in order to improve the adsorption capacity to the metallic ions and the adsorptivity to the several metallic ions, such as $Cd^{2+},\;Pb^{2+},\;Al^{3+},\;Mg^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;and\;Hg^{2+}$ of the alkali-treated and untreated polymers were tested. These MPD-RES-F type resins showed better adsorption capacity to the heavy metallic ions such as $Cd^{2+}\;and\;Hg^{2+}$ than the light metallic ions such as $Pb^{2+},\;Al^{3+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$, and the treatment of the resins with about 20 percent aqueous sodium hydroxide solution showed significant improvement of the adsorption capacity to the metallic ions in all cases.
