This study was carried out to investigate the optimal mycelial growth and an artificial cultivation conditions of Pleurotus eryngii. The optimal medium for the mycelial growth and density was MYPA medium. The optimal temperature and pH for the mycelial growth were $25^{\circ}C$ and 6.0, respectively. The modified optimal medium composition were obtained to be soluble starch 3%(w/v), malt extract 0.25%(w/v), yeast extract 0.25%(w/v) and $CaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ 0.05% (w/v). From the results of experiment on the nutritional requirements, the modified optimal medium was higher than MYP medium in mycelial production and growth yield (Yx/s) of Pleurotus eryngii. The optimal sawdust species of solid culture for the mycelial growth and density was Quercus spp. The optimal concentration of additives (rice bran and wheat bran) and moisture content for the mycelial growth were about 30%(v/v) and 70%(v/v), respectively. On the other hand, the optimal concentration of additives for the production of fruiting body was 20%(v/v) of rice bran.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of application of the dolomite particle and the shell powder on soil characteristics, dry matter yield and nutritive value of forages in loam soil at the experimental field of National Livestock Research Institute, Suwon, from 1994 to 1996. Application treatments were control, lime, dolomite 0.5, 2.0, 4.0mm, and shell powder in mixed pasture. Rate of dust occurrence was greatly decreased according to dolomite application and the dissolving rate in soil was highest in shell powder application among treatments. Although there was no significant difference, average dry matter yield of forages for 3 years was slightly increased with the application of lime, shell powder, dolomite 0.5mm, 4.0mm, 2.0mm and control in order. Both Ca and Mg contents of forages were no differences among treatments in 1994. However, all treatments were higher than those of control in 1995. And K and Na contents of forages were no differences among treatments. Lime requirement was greatly increased from 2,630 to 6,150kg per ha with the lapse of time. Although soil hardness was optimum level at first, it was likely to become hard little by little after treatments. Solid phase of soil was lowered a little except for control. Organic matter and available $P_2O_5$ contents of soil were highest in shell powder application among treatments, and K, Ca and Mg contents of soil were no differences among treatments. Ca content was increased a little in 1995, but decreased a little in 1996 compared to that of soil before treatments in 1994. AIso, Mg content was lowered than that of soil before experiment in 1995 and 1996. The results demonstrated that use of dolomite and shell powder as lime substitutes could be reduced dust problem and coast pollution as well as soil improvement. Therefore, it is desirable to apply the dolomite and the shell powder every 3 years in loam soil.
Twelve multiparous Holstein dairy cows in mid-lactation were selected for a replicated $4{\times}4$ Latin square design with a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement to investigate the effects of corn and soybean meal (SBM) types on rumen fermentation, N metabolism and lactation performance in dairy cows. Two types of corn (dry ground [DGC] and steam-flaked corn [SFC]) and two types of SBM (solvent-extracted and heat-treated SBM) with different ruminal degradation rates and extents were used to formulate four diets with the same basal ingredients. Each period lasted for 21 days, including 14 d for adaptation and 7 d for sample collection. Cows receiving SFC had a lower dry matter (DM) and total N intake than those fed DGC. However, the milk yield and milk protein yield were not influenced by the corn type, resulting in higher feed and N utilization efficiency in SFC-fed cows than those receiving DGC. Ruminal acetate concentrations was greater and total volatile fatty acids concentrations tended to be greater for cows receiving DGC relative to cows fed SFC, but milk fat content was not influenced by corn type. The SFC-fed cows had lower ruminal ammonia-N, less urea N in their blood and milk, and lower fecal N excretion than those on DGC. Compared with solvent-extracted SBM-fed cows, cows receiving heat-treated SBM had lower microbial protein yield in the rumen, but similar total tract apparent nutrient digestibility, N metabolism measurements, and productivity. Excessive supply of metabolizable protein in all diets may have caused the lack of difference in lactation performance between SBM types. Results of the present study indicated that increasing the energy degradability in the rumen could improve feed efficiency, and reduce environmental pollution.

This experiment was carried out in order to study the effect of fertilizer application and seasonal changes on the productivity of the native reed (Phragmites communis Trinius) on the reclaimed tidal flate in Chonnam province. The samples of reed were taken at about 30-days interval from May to October, 1982 and evaluated plant height, blade & sheath-stem ratio, grass yield, the feed compositions and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVD). The results are summarized as follows: 1. Plant height, grass yield, crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility of the reed were significantly increased by fertilizer application, and ADF content was significantly decreased. 2. According to the significance test of coefficience, there was a significant negative correlation (P<0.05) between in vitro dry matter digestibility and plant height, grass yield, and the content of crude fiber and ADF, but a positive correlation (P<0.05) between in vitro dry matter digestibility and blade & sheath-stem ratio, and the content of crude protein and crude fat.
This study was conducted to investigate effects of the brown seaweed waste(BSW) supplementation on milk production and related endocrine response in serum in Holstein dairy cows. A total of 14 Holstein dairy cows(initial mean live weight 625kg, average lactation days 225, Reproduction 2.4) were randomly allocated into control(basal diet) and treatment groups (4% BSW/basal diet) with 7 replications for 90 days. Dry matter intake was not affected by brown seaweed waste supplementation, but daily milk yield(kg) at the last experiment significantly increased (6.25kg) in treatment group compared with control group(p<0.05) at the last experiment. The plasma insulin-like growth factor(IGF)-1, triiodothyronine($T_3$) and thyroxine($T_4$) levels were significantly increased in treatment group compared with control group(p<0.05), although the concentration of plasma growth hormone(GH) was not significantly different. Milk composition was not significantly different between groups. The somatic cell count(SCC) in milk were significantly reduced in treatment group compared with control group(p<0.05), but antibodies(total IgG, G1, G2) were not significantly different between groups. Therefore we strongly believe that the increased milk yield is related to metabolic hormones as IGF-1, $T_3$ and $T_4$ and the mechanism of reducing SCC in milk must do more study related nonspecific immunsystem in the future.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of dietary sulfur (S) and vitamin E (Vit E) supplementation on the quality of beef from longissimus muscle of Hanwoo bulls. Eleven, 29 months-aged Hanwoo bulls were randomly divided into three feed supplementation groups (S (n = 4), Vit E (n = 4) and S+Vit E (n = 3)). S was given as much as 12 g/head/d and Vit E was given as much as 1,200 IU/head/d; both supplements were given for 3 months prior to slaughter. At 24 h post-slaughter, the carcasses were weighed and evaluated by official grader for carcass traits. At 48 h post-slaughter, the M. longissimus from each carcass was collected and stored at $4{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$ for 10 days. There were no significant differences in yield and quality grades of carcass and proximate composition, physical properties and aroma pattern of meat among all groups. At 5 days of storage, the TBARS value of meat from cattle with S+Vit E supplementation was significantly lower (p<0.05) than other groups; and at 10 days of storage, the TBARS value of meat from cattle with Vit E and S+Vit E supplementations was significantly lower (p<0.05) than from cattle with S supplementation. At 5 days of storage, MetMb concentration of meat from cattle with S+Vit E supplementation was significantly lower (p<0.05) than from cattle with Vit E supplementation; and at 10 days of storage, MetMb concentration of meat from cattle with S+Vit E supplementation was significantly lower (p<0.05) than from other groups. At 10 days of storage, the redness value of meat from cattle with S supplementation was significantly higher (p<0.05) than from cattle with Vit E supplementation and the hue-angle value of meat from cattle with S and S+Vit E supplementations was significantly lower (p<0.05) than from cattle with Vit E supplementation. Dietary Vit E supplementation had a better effect on lipid stability whereas dietary S supplementation had a better effect on OxyMb stability. The dietary combination of S and Vit E created the highest protection for beef from myoglobin oxidation and thus improved the color stability of meat.

In this study, the optimal extraction conditions for three medicinal herbs as functional sources against inflammatory and arthritic diseases were developed. Traditional medicinal herbs were screened for their inhibition of hyaluronidase (HAse) activity and nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. For the screening of anti-inflammatory properties, ethanolic extracts of 53 species of traditional medicinal herb were examined. We confirmed that Astragalus membranaceus (A.R.), Schisandra chinensis (S.F.), and Platycodon grandiflorum (P.G.) inhibit NO production. For extraction from all three herbs simultaneously, an ethanol concentration of 95%, a 1:2:1 mixture ratio, and at 50 rpm mixing speed, for over 12 h and at $30^{\circ}C$ was the best condition for optimal extract yield and NO inhibition effects. HAse inhibition from the three herb extraction was three fold higher than single samples. The ethanol extracts were fractionated with various solvents (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water). The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of the herb mixture showed the highest extract yield (13%) and NO inhibition effects (73%). In conclusion, this study provides experimental evidence that a mixture of P.G., A.R., and S.F. could be used as a source of antioxidant ingredients in the food industry.

To investigate the effects of inorganic phosphate ($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha), fermented cow manures($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha, 400kg/ha) and poultry manures($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha, 400kg/na) levels mixed with sawdust on the soil changes and productivity of alfalfa monoculture, a field experiment arranged by randonmized complete block design was conducted at National Livestock Research Institute in Suwon, September, 1993 to December 1995. The results are as follows. S1. Soil pH was changed from 5.40(before experiment) to 6.17(fermented cow manure, $P_2O_5$ 400kg/ha), 6.76 (fermented poultry manure, $P_2O_5$400kg/ha) and 6.3l(inorganic phosphate, $P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha) at 0~5cm depth of subsoil, respectively. Organic contents after experiment were lower as a range of 2.41%~3.15% than those before experiment. 2. Total nitrogen contents of each treatment showed as 0.13%~0.16% at 0~5cm depth of subsoil comparing with before experiment(0.15%). Available phosphate content of inorganic phosphate($P_2O_5$200kgha) was highest as 405ppm. lowest as 125ppm(fermented poultry manure, $P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha) than before trial(205ppm). 3. K and Ca contents of after experiment were appeared to 0.22%~0.78% and 6.45%~9.45% comparing with before experiment(0.10% and 3.56%), respectively. 4. During two years, average DM yield of fermented cow rnanure($P_2O_5$ 400kg/ha) was highest as 11, 731kg/ha and lowest as 9, 017kg/ha at fermented poultry manure plot($P_2O_5$ 200kg/ha) with as sawdust, but no significant difference was found among treatment(P>0.05). 5. CP production, NEL and TDN yield of fermented cow manure($P_2O_5$ 400kg/ha) were highest as 2, 282kg/ha 69, 900kg/ha and 6, 392kg/ha, respectively, but no significant difference among treatment(P>0.05). 6. In inorganic contents of alfalfas, there was not show same tendency in accordance with treatments. As a results mentioned above, it was possible to use 200kg $P_2O_5/ha$ of fermented cow or poultry manure with sawdust instead of inorganic phosphae fertilizer.
Pectin, hesperidin and naringin were extracted from hot air-dried peel ($60^{\circ}C$, 1 hr and air velocity 160 fpm) of citrus produced in Korea in order to see the amount of each component contained in the peel. Pectin was extracted by three different methods and the quality and contents of the pectins were determined respectively. 1. The pectin yield by the total pectic substance method was the highest (26.0% for unshiu (U) and 28.5% for natsudaidai (N) expectedly and the soluble pectic substance method the least (13.5%(U) and 15.6% (N)) The yield by method III (extraction by water at pH 1.5 followed by isopropanol precipitation) was intermediate (18.1% (U) and 20.8%(N)). Anhydrouronic acid (AUA) content was the highest (92.0% (U) and 90.3%(N)) in those by method III. The AUA contents of the other pectins were 80.0% for soluble pectin (for both U and N), 71.6% for the commercial pectin (Sunkist Groups Inc., U.S.A.), 58.0%(N) and 63.4%(U) for total pectic substance. 2. The methoxyl content of total pectic substance was the lowest (4.81%(U) and 4.88%(N)). However, there was no significant difference in methoxyl content among the rest which were found to have low levels(5.27-7.20%). 3. The pectin by method III gave the highest jelly strength. The commercial pectin, soluble pectice substance and total pectic substance were next in order. 4. The hesperidin content of unshiu was 5.07% (dry basis) and the naringin content of natsudaidai 3.03% (dry basis).

A study was conducted to determine the effects of seed mixture and nitrogen application levels on botanical composition and forage productivity in grazing pasture. Legume forage have the ability to take nitrogen from the atmosphere and convert it into a form usable by plants. Including legumes in mixtures with grass lowers the amount of nitrogen fertilizer required to produce forages. Dry matter (DM) yield of grass-legume mixtures was more than that of grass mono-cultivated and grass+white clover+red clover mixtures was the highest as 17,391 kg/ha in legume mixture (P<0.01). The highest DM yield was in N-200 kg/ha, but it was similar between N-100 kg/ha(15,128) and N-200 kg/ha (16,017). The large decline in the proportion of grass during April to June in 2004 probably was due to the drought and summer depression in grass-legume mixtures. Grass proportions decreased by 8.2% after 2 year, and white clover was dominated in grass-white clover mixture by May 2005. Crud protein (CP) content tends to increase with increased nitrogen application level.
