In order to investigate the relationship between the incidence of displaced abomasum and feeding, the actual feeding practices and chemical compositions of roughage were examined in 2 kinds of farms at Tokachi district in Hokkaido. Examination of animal health records revealed that the annual milk yield per cow in high incidence (H-DA) farms was significantly higher than that in low incidence (L-DA) farms. The amount of concentrates fed in H-DA farms tended to be higher than that in L-DA farms during lactation. Compared to L-DA farms, the amount of juicy roughage (corn silage and grass silage) and dry roughage (hay, hay cube and roll wrap silage) during lactation in H-DA farms tended to be higher and lower, respectively. Moreover, the amount of roughage and the ratio of roughage to concentrates in H-DA farms tended to be lower than in L-DA farms. The survey indicated that displaced abomasum was associated with insufficient feeding of dietary fiber and overfeeding of concentrates.
5-Aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) is an active ingredient of therapeutic agents used for Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis. Because it is absorbed rapidly and extensively in the upper intestine, delivery of the agent specifically to the colon is necessary. We selected taurine as a colon-specific promoiety and designed 5-aminosalicyltaurine (5-ASA-Tau) as a new colon-specific prodrug of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). It was expected that introduction of taurine would restrict the absorption of the prodrug and show additive effect to the anti-inflammatory action of 5-ASA after hydrolysis. 5-ASA-Tau was prepared in good yield by a simple synthetic route. The apparent partition coefficient of 5-ASA-Tau in 1-octanol/pH 6.8 phosphate buffer or $CHCl_3$/pH 6.8 phosphate buffer was 0.10 or 0.18, respectively, at $37^{\circ}C$. To determine the chemical and biochemical stability in the upper intestinal environment, 5-ASA-Tau was incubated in pH 1.2 and 6.8 buffer solutions, and with the homogenates of tissue and contents of stomach or small intestine of rats at $37^{\circ}C$. 5-ASA was not detected from any of the incubation medium with no change in the concentration of 5-ASA-Tau. On incubation of 5-ASA-Tau with the cecal and colonic contents of rats, the fraction of the dose released as 5-ASA was 45% and 20%, respectively, in 8 h. Considering low partition coefficient and stability in the upper intestine, 5-ASA-Tau might be nonabsorbable and stable in the upper intestine. After oral administration, it would be delivered to the colon in intact form and release 5-ASA and taurine. These results suggested 5-ASA-Tau as a promising colon-specific prodrug of 5-ASA.
The Electrostatic Charge Prevention Technology is a core factor that highly influences the yield of Ultra High Resolution Flat Panel Display and high-integrated semiconductor manufacturing processes. The corona or x-ray ionizations are commonly used in order to eliminate static charges during manufacturing processes. To develop such a revolutionary x-ray ionizer that is free of x-ray radiation and has function to control the volume of ion formation simultaneously is a goal of this research and it absolutely overcomes the current risks of x-ray ionization. Under the International Commission on Radiological Protection, it must have a leakage radiation level that should be lower than a recommended level that is $1{\mu}Sv/hour$. In this research, the new generation of x-ray ionizer can easily control both the volume of ion formation and the leakage radiation level at the same time. In the research, the test constraints were set and the descriptions are as below; First, In order not to leak x-ray radiation while testing, the shielding box was fully installed around the test equipment area. Second, Implement the metallic Ring Electrode along a tube window and applied zero to ${\pm}8kV$ with respect to manage the positive and negative ions formation. Lastly, the ion duty ratio was able to be controlled in different test set-ups along with a free x-ray leakage through the metallic Ring Electrode. In the result of experiment, the maximum x-ray radiation leakage was $0.2{\mu}Sv/h$. These outcome is lower than the ICRP 103 recommended value, which is $1{\mu}Sv/h$. When applying voltage to the metallic ring electrode, the positive decay time was 2.18s at the distance of 300 mm and its slope was 0.272. In addition, the negative decay time was 2.1s at the distance of 300 mm and its slope was 0.262. At the distance of 200 mm, the positive decay time was 2.29s and its slope was 0.286. The negative decay time was 2.35s and its slope was 0.293. At the distance of 100 mm, the positive decay time was 2.71s and its slope was 0.338. The negative decay time was 3.07s and its slope was 0.383. According to these research, the observation was shown that these new concept of ionizer is able to minimize the leakage radiation level and to control the positive and negative ion duty ratio while ionization.

Properties of wine produced from domestic grape, cultivar Campbell's Early, by carbonic maceration vinification process (CM) were investigated. Process required whole grape clusters without crushing or destemming and no yeast inoculation for fermentation. Fermentation heat was not generated. Yield of wine was 77%, close to that obtained by conventional process, 76%. Acidities of CM wines, free run and pressed wines, and conventional wine were pH 3.6 and 3.3, respectively. Tartaric acid contents of conventional, free run, and pressed wines were 1,813, 4,691, and 5,633 ppm, while those of malic acid were 3,446, 2,077, and 2,275 ppm, respectively. CM could reduce malic acid content by 2/3 that of conventional process. Both processes gave almost equal amounts of citric and acetic acids. CM wines had intense grape aroma and deep purple-blue, natural grape color.
This experiment was conducted at Cheonan Yonam Experimental Livestock Farm in 2001-2002 to detennine the effect of harvest date(20 April, 26 April and 4 May) on forage yield and quality of rye varieties of three different maturing groups(early maturing variety = ‘Koolgrazer’ midseason maturing variety = ‘Horni122’ and late maturing variety = ‘Danko’). The heading date of Kooigrazer, Hornil22 and Danko were 17, 22 and 29 April, respectively. Dry matter percentage increased from 15.6 to 21.6% as the harvest date was delayed from April 20 to May 4. Among the rye varieties tested, dry matter percentage of Koolgrazer, Hornil22 and Danko were 20.9, 18.8 and 16.3%, respectively. Dry matter yield increased from 1l.2 to 13.9 ton/ha as the harvest date was delayed, but no significant difference among rye varieties. As the harvest date was delayed, total digestible nutrients(TDN) yield also increased significantly from 7.4 to 8.4 ton/ha However no significant difference was found among rye varieties. Crude protein(CP) percentage decreased from 20.3 to 17.1% as the harvest date was delayed, and CP percentage of late maturing variety, Danko, was significantly higher than that of the other varieties. In content of fiber component(NDF, ADF, ADL, hemicellulose and cellulose) of rye, the late harvest date(4 May) showed the highest among harvest dates. From comparisoo within rye varieties tested, Kooigrazer, a early maturing variety had higher than a rnidseason and late maturing varieties, Hornill22 and Danko. The cellulase digestible of organic matter of dry matter(CDOMD) decreased as the harvest date was delayed. Among the rye varieties tested, the CDOMD of a early maturing variety, Koolgrazer was the lowest. Our study differences of winter rye in forage yield and quality resulting from variety maturity and harvest stage. A early maturing variety, Kooigrazer should be harvested between 24 and 28 April, Hamill 22(midseason maturing variety) harvested between 29 April and 3 May, Danko(late maturing variety) harvested between 4 and 8 May for maximum forage yield and optimum quality.
To investigate the relationship between the effect of potassium basal and top dressing amount on rice plant under the limed condition, a pot experiment was conducted with Milyang 21, rice variety. Growing status, yield components and chemical component of rice, plant were determined and soils were analyzed along with the growing stages and obtained results are as follows. 1. Control treatment, without lime application shows a good vegetative growth as compared with lime treated one. However grain yield was higher in lime treated pot when potassium was applied as basal and top dressing. 2. There was no big difference between potassium applied and control treatment on growing status of nice plant until 20 days after transplanting. However in case of lime treated pot big difference were observed 20 days after transplanting resulting lower grain yield as compared with control treatment. This trend were severe in a lime treated treatment. 3. In control treatment, potassium basal dressing shows higher grain yield as increase the amount of basal dressing and the highest yield obtained in all basal potassium application treatment. However in case of lime treated pot when two-third of potassium were applied as basal dressing, potassium content of rice became lower at reproductive stage and resulted lower yield. When we applied all the potassium as a basal dressing, there were no differences as compared with control treatment in terms of grain yield. 4. The soil condition that affects potassium absorption disorder in rice plant such as unlimed condition, potassium application should be done as a basal dressing. However in limed condition that potassium absorption disorder occurs scarcely, and potassium content exists unsufficient amount in soil, large amount of potassium as basal dressing and the rest as top dressing are recommended. 5. The higher content of potassium in rice plant at the reproductive growing stage results heavier tillers as compared with lower one so that heavier tillers produce more grain yield. 6. At vigorous growing stage there was a positive correlation between electric conductivity of soil and amount of potasium absorbed by rice plant. This fact suggests that to obtain higher yield large amount of potassium top dressing at late of vegetative growing stage are necessary so that the content of potassium in rice plant will increase and results higher yield.
From a sample of bamboo byproduct, the protease-producing yeast strain CO-1 was newly isolated. Strain CO-1 is spherical to ovoid in shape and measures $3.1-4.0{\times}3.8-4.4{\mu}m$. For the growth of strain CO-1, the optimal temperature and initial pH were $30^{\circ}C$ and 4.0, respectively. The strain was able to grow in 0.0-15.0%(w/v) NaCl and 0.0-9.0%(v/v) ethanol. Based on a phylogenetic analysis of its 18S rDNA sequences, strain CO-1 was identified as Pichia anomala. The extracellular protease produced by P. anomala CO-1 was partially purified by ammonium sulfate precipitation, which resulted in a 14.6-fold purification and a yield of 7.2%. The molecular mass of the protease was recorded as approximately 30 kDa via zymogram. The protease activity reached its maximum when 1.0%(w/v) CMC was used as the carbon source, 1.0%(w/v) yeast extract was used as the nitrogen source, and 0.3%(w/v) $MnSO_4$ was used as the mineral source. The protease revealed the highest activity at pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$. This enzyme maintained more than 75% of its stability at a pH range of 4.0-10.0. After heating at $65^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, the neutral protease registered at 60% of its original activity. The protease production coincided with growth and attained a maximal level during the post-exponential phase.

Methane was produced from the anaerobic digestion of marine macro-algae. Elemental analysis was first performed to estimate the theoretical methane production of three macro-algae (Undaria pinnatifida, Laminaria japonica, Hizikia fusiformis). Three algae were found to contain C 34 ~ 36%, H 5%, O 37 ~ 43%, N 2 ~ 4%, S 0.4 ~ 0.7%, and ash 14~21%, and the theoretical methane content was in the range of 56 ~ 60%, which can produce 442 ~ 568 mL $CH_4$ per g of volatile solid (VS). Using the biological methane potential (BMP) test, we found that L. japonica resulted in the highest yield of methane (52%). Moreover, various operational conditions, such as algae amount, pH, salinity, particle size, and pre-treatment, were investigated in order to find an optimal condition of anaerobic digestion. At pH 8.0, the autoclaved L. japonica (5g VS/200 mL), when used without washing salt, produced 268.5 mL/g VS which is 65% of the theoretical methane productions. Furthermore, using a CSTR (with the working volume of 7 L out of the total volume of 10 L), we have successfully operated the reactor for 65 days and obtained maximum methane production rate of 1.4 L/day with purity of 70%.
In order to prepare kimchi tablet(K7), the kimchi was fermented with crushed materials and lactic acid bacterial starter. The effect of raying methods (hot air-drying : HAD, freeze drying: FD), moulding pressure (100, 150 and 200 kg/cm2) and moulding time (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 min) of kimchi tablet on residual solid, characteristics of filtrate, color, textual properties, hygroscopicity and sensory quality were investigated. No great difference showed in residual solid of the tablet prepared with freeze dried kimchi (FD-KT), but the tablet prepared with hot air-dried kimchi (HAD-KT) decreased markedly with an increase in moulding pressure. Residual solid of FD-KT was lower than that of HAD-KT. The pH and redness for HAD-KT and FD-KT were similar. Total sugar. acidity and lightness of FD-KT as compared with HAD-KT were higher, while higher max, yield, strength and hardness were found for HAD-KT. Color, tactile, flavor, chewing taste, acceptability and hygroscopicity of FD-KT were generally higher than those of HAD-KT. Hygroscopicity of HAD-KT decreased with an increase in moulding pressure in md time, but that of FD-KT increased. Overall qualities of FD-KT and HAD-KT showed best in 200 kg/㎠ of moulding pressure, 3min of moulding time.
BACKGROUND: Salt accumulation in coastal reclaimed soil can decrease plant growth and productivity, which could lead to considerable variation of methane($CH_4$) emission in a rice paddy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission in a coastal reclaimed soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission and rice growth characteristics was studied by pot test, which packed by reclaimed paddy soils collected from Galsa, Hadong, Gyeongnam province. Electrical conductivity(EC) of each treatment was controlled by 0.98, 2.25, 5.05 and 9.48 dS/m and $CH_4$ emission was characterized a week interval by closed chamber method during rice cultivation. The $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation, but total $CH_4$ flux in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment was lower than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. It seems because of higher content of water soluble $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. Rice growth and grain yield were significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation. Soil properties, especially EC and pH were negatively correlated with $CH_4$ flux, while rice growth characteristics like plant height and tiller number show significantly positive correlation with $CH_4$ flux. CONCLUSION(S): Conclusively, salt accumulation significantly decreased $CH_4$ flux in a rice paddy, which could be useful information for evaluating $CH_4$ flux in reclaimed area in Korea.
