  • Phosphorus (P) removal by aluminum sulfate solution was investigated with varying pH and initial P concentrations. P removal was the highest at around pH 6. The pH range where P removal occurred was slightly wider at higher initial P concentrations. Compared to theoretical calculations, it was confirmed that $AlPO_4$ precipitation was the main reason for P removal at low pH. At high pH, where there should be no $AlPO_4$ precipitates, the P removal by adsorption of amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ precipitates was experimentally observed. The P removal by adding amorphous $Al(OH)_3$ precipitates prepared before the adsorption experiments, however, was lower than that by injecting aluminum sulfate solution because the prepared precipitates became larger, leading to less specific surface area available for adsorption. Ions other than sulfate had little influence on P removal.

  • In the present study, stabilized rayon fabrics were prepared from fast isothermal stabilization processes, which were carried out within four minutes at $350^{\circ}C$. The effects of ultrasonic cleaning and chemical pre-treatment on the chemical composition, physical characteristics, X-ray diffraction pattern, thermal stability and shape of the stabilized rayon fabrics were investigated extensively. In order to reduce the weight loss and thermal shrinkage of rayon fabrics occurring during the stabilization process, ultrasonic cleaning was first conducted and then chemical pre-treatments using $NH_4Cl$, $Na_3PO_4$, $H_3PO_4$, and $ZnCl_2$ were performed, respectively. The results indicated that both ultrasonic cleaning and chemical pre-treatment influenced the weight loss, thermal shrinkage, microstructure, carbon content, thermal stability and fabric shape of stabilized rayon fabrics. Also the results depended on the fast-stabilization time and the type of chemical pre-treatment agents used.

  • We have successfully grown <111>-oriented (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)$O_3$(LSAT) mixed-perovskite single crystals and <0001>-oriented $Ca_8La_2(PO_4)_6O_2$(CLPA) single crystals with the apatite structure by the Czochralski method. The compositional and lattice parameter uniformity of the crystals are discussed in relation to the growth conditions. Since LSAT and CLPA single crystals have excellent lattice matching with GaN, they ar promising as new substrates for the growth of high quality GaN epitaxial layers.

  • Nanotube morphology change of Ti-Ta-Zr alloy as Zr content increase has been researched using various experimental methods. Ti-Ta-Zr(3, 7 and 15 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and nano-structure controlled for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Formation of oxide nanotubes are conducted by anodizing a Ti-Ta-Zr alloy in $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes with small amounts of fluoride ions at room temperature. Electrochemical experiments were carried out with conventional three-electrode configuration with a platinum counter electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. The samples were embedded with epoxy resin, leaving a square surface area of $10mm^2$ exposed to the anodizing electrolyte, 1.0M $H_3PO_4$ containing 0.8wt% NaF.

  • The strain producing biosurfactant was isolated from soil smples. The isolated strain was identified as the genus Nocardia through its morphological, cultural and physiolgical characteristics. A high concentration of the biosurfactant by Nocardia sp. L-417 was obtained after 4 days of cultivation in the culture medium containing 3% n-hexadecane, 0.1% $NaNO_3$, 0.02% $K_2HOP_4$, 0.01% $H_2PO_4$, 0.01% $MgSO_4$.$7H_2O$, 0.01% $CaCl_2$, 0.02% yeast extract, and 0.02% tryptone. The optimum pH and temperature for biosurfactant production were pH 6.0 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. Furthermore, most biosurfactans were produced during the exponential growth phase, and this fact indicated that the biosurfactans production was growth-associated. The biosurfactant showed the good emulsification activities on various emulsifying substrates such as bunker A, paraffin, corn oil which are used widely in industries.

  • $LiFePO_4$ is a promising cathode material for secondary lithium batteries due to its high energy density, low cost and safety. $LiFePO_4$ was synthesized by the citrate process under reductive, neutral, and oxidative, atmospheres and the crystal structure was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction. The samples synthesized under $N_2$ and $H_2$ atmosphere showed a single phase of a olivine structure, where the samples synthesized under $O_2$ atmosphere exhibited second phase of $Fe2O_3$. All the samples synthesized at 400, 600 and $800^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ atmosphere presented a single phase of olivine. Residual organic material was observed for the sample synthesized at $400^{\circ}C$. There was nearly no intensity difference between the samples synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The electrochemical characteristic of the $LiFePO_4$ synthesized at $600^{\circ}C$ in the $N_2$ atmosphere was analyzed. The result exhibited an high discharge capacity of 160 mAh/g at the first cycle, and 155-160 mAh/g after 45 cycles.

  • Penicillium oxalicum strain CBPS-3F-Tsa, an efficient phosphate solubilizing fungus, was evaluated for its production of organic acid in vitro and effect of inoculation on the growth promotion of Maize under greenhouse conditions. The fungus solubilized 129.1, 118.8, and 54.1 mg P/1 of tricalcium phosphate [$Ca_{3}(PO_{4})_{2}$], aluminum phosphate ($A1PO_{4}$),and ferric phosphate ($FePO_{4}$), respectively, after 72 h of incubation. Malic acid, gluconic acid, and oxalic acid were detected in the flasks supplemented with various phosphate sources [240, 146, 145 mM/1 $A1PO_{4},\;FePO_{4},\;and\;Ca_{3}(PO_{4})_{2}$, respectively] together with a large amount of malic acid followed by the other two. The effects of inoculation of P. oxalicum CBPS-3F-Tsa on maize plants were studied under pot culture conditions. P. oxalicum CBPS-3F-Tsa was inoculated to maize plants alone or together with inorganic phosphates in the form of fused phosphates (FP) and rock phosphates (RP). Inoculation of P. oxalicum CBPS-3F-Tsa increased the plant growth and N and P accumulation in plants, compared with control plants, and also had positive effects when applied with RP. The results of this study show that the fungus P. oxalicum strain CBPS-3F-Tsa could solubilize different insoluble phosphates by producing organic acids, particularly malic acid, and also improved the efficiency of RP applied to maize plants.
