Effect of H2SO4 and Reaction Time on Synthesis of 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O Whiskers using Hydrothermal Reaction (수열반응을 이용한 침상형 5Mg(OH)2·MgSO4·3H2O 합성에 대한 H2SO4와 반응 시간의 영향)

  • Magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate (MHSH) whiskers were synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction by using MgO as the reactant as well as the acid solution. The effects of the H2SO4 amount and reaction time at the same temperature were studied. In general, MHSH whiskers were prepared using MgSO4 in aqueous ammonia. In this work, to reduce the formation of impurities and increase the purity of MHSH, we employed a synthesis technique that did not require the addition of a basic solution. Furthermore, the pH value, which was controlled by the H2SO4 amount, acted as an important factor for the formation of high-purity MHSH. MgO was used as the raw material because it easily reacts in water and forms Mg+ and MgOH+ ions that bind with SO42- ions to produce MHSH. Their morphologies and structures were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • The photocatalytic activity of TiO$_2$ was investigated as a function of added amount of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$, heat treatment temperature and the decomposition rate of 1 mM dichloroacetic acid(DCA). Mixed oxides of TiO$_2$ and Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ was prepared by the sol-gel process. The addition of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ into TiO$_2$ has deleterious effect on the decomposition rate of DCA, which was decreased as the amount of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ was increased. The excess electrons due to the doping of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ into TiO$_2$ can promote the reduction process instead of oxidation or recombination rate with electron holes. The most efficient photocatalyst was the one heat treated at 40$0^{\circ}C$ for an hour as far as the heat treatment temperature is concerned. The lower the pH of the solution, the higher the quantum yield.tum yield.

  • The nonlinearity and degradation characteristics of $Pr_{6}O_{11}$-based ZnO varistors doped with, $Er_{2}O_3$ were investigated. The varistors were sintered at 1335$^{\circ}C$ in the addition range of 0.0 to 2.0 mol% $Er_{2}O_3$, respectively The varistor doped with $Er_{2}O_3$ exhibited more higher nonlinearity than that without $Er_{2}O_3$. Most of the varistors containing 0.5 mol% $Er_{2}O_3$ showed nonlinear exponent more than 70 and a excellent stability, which the variation rate of the varistor voltage and the nonlinear exponent is -0.85% and -1.43%. respectively, even under 3rd d.c stress, such as (0.80 $V_{1mA}/90^{\circ}C$/12h)+(0.85$V_{1mA}/115^{\circ}C$/12h)+(0.90$V_{1mA}/120^{\circ}C$/12h). Consequently, since $Pr_{6}O_{11}$-based 2nO varistors doped with 0.5 mol% $Er_{2}O_3$ have an excellent stability as well as good nonlinearity, it is expected to be usefully used to develop the advanced varistors in future.

Bismuth modified gamma radiation shielding properties of titanium vanadium sodium tellurite glasses as a potent transparent radiation-resistant glass applications

  • This work reported the radiation shielding characteristic of the bismuth titanium vanadium sodium tellurite glass system. The density of the specially-developed glass samples was increased from 2.21 to 4.01 g/cm3 with the addition of Bi2O3, despite the fact the molar volume is decease within 85.43-54.79 cm3/mol. The WinXcom program was used to approximate the effect of Bi2O3 on the gamma radiation shielding parameters of bismuth titanium vanadium sodium tellurite glasses. The ㎛ values decrease with the increase of Bi2O3 concentration. The computed data shows that the glass sample with 20 mol.% of Bi2O3 content has the greatest radiation attenuation performance in comparison to other selected glasses. The Bi2O3-TiO2-V2O5-Na2O-TeO2 glass system shows excellent neutron shielding material with high long-term light transmittance and discharge resistance and could be potentially used as transparent radiation-resistant shielding glass applications.

  • This study describes a synthesis of spinel-type $Fe_3O_4$ for decomposition of carbon dioxide, using $Fe_3O_4$ $7H_2O$ and NaOH, at $40^{\circ}C$ for 20 h. with change of their chemical equivalent ratio from 0.50 to 0.75, 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50, respectively. Addition of 0.1-1.00 mole percentage $NiCl_2,\;RhCl_3$ to the particles of $Fe_3O_4$, Prepared by reacting chemical equivalent ratio 1.00, afforced spinel $Fe_3O_4$. The structure of $Fe_3O_4$ and $NiCl_2,\;RhCl_3$-added $Fe_3O_4$ was investigated with XRD and SEM, respectively.

Glucose and Its Role in Generating Reactive Oxygen Species Required for Mouse Sperm Fertilizing Ability

  • Effects of xanthine (X), xanthine oxidase (XO), and catalase (C), $H_2O_2$, and carbohydrates on sperm capacitation, acrosome reaction, and fertilizing ability in vitro were examined. Glucose alone, but not fructose, supported the maximum rate of sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction. However, in the combination of X, XO, and C (XXOC) or $H_2O_2$, fructose alone also supported maximum capacitation, acrosome reaction, and fertilization. Either insufficient or excessive amounts of $H_2O_2$ decreased sperm capacitation and the acrosome reaction. In order to understand how glucose generates $H_2O_2$ or other reactive oxygen species in sperm cells, 6-aminonicotinamide, an inhibitor of the pentose-phosphate pathway (PPP), and apocynin, an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase, were added to sperm suspensions in glucose-containing medium. Results appeared that sperm capacitation, acrosome reaction, and fertilization were consequently inhibited by either one of these compounds. These inhibitory effects were nullified by addition of XXOC. These results support the hypothesis that glucose, in addition to being a substrate for glycolysis, facilitates sperm capacitation and the acrosome reaction by generating reactive oxygen species through G-6-P dehydrogenase and NADPH oxidase.

Effect of Salviae-radix on oxidant-induced impairment of membrane transport function in renal tubules (Oxidant에 의한 신장세뇨관 물질이동계의 장애에 대한 단삼(丹參)의 효과)

  • This study was undertaken to determine whether Salviae-radix (SVR) exraction exerts benefical effect against oxidant-induced inhibition of tetraethylammonium (TEA) uptake which is actively secreted by renal proximal tubules. TEA uptake increased as function of incubation time to 60 min. When renal cortical slices were exposed to 50 mM $H_2O_2$, TEA uptake was significantly inhibited. The inhibition was significantly protected by addition of 0.5% SVR extraction. The benefical effect of SVR was dose-dependent over the concentration range of 0.1-1%; $H_2O_2$ (50 mM)-induced inhibition of TEA uptake was completely protected by 0.5-1% SVR extraction. $H_2O_2$ increased LDH release which was accompanied by an increase in lipid peroxidation in renal cortical slices. These changes were prevented by 0.5% SVR. These results suggest that SVR exerts benefical effect against oxidant-induced impairment of membrane transport function, this effect may be due to by an antioxidant action.

  • This study was carried out to examine mechanisms by which Holotrichia (HTC) produces protective effect against renal cell injury. HTC extraction (5%) prevented $H_2O_2(50mM)$-induced LDH release and lipid peroxidation in renal cortical slices. When slices were treated with 5% HTC extraction, cellular glutathione content and the superoxide dismutase activity were not altered in control and $H_2O_2$-treated tissues. When slices were treated with 50 mM $H_2O_2$, the catalase activity was significantly inhibited, which was completely restored by addition of 5% HTC. Treatment of slices with 5% HTC extraction increased the glutation peroxidase activity in $H_2O_2$-treated tissues. These results suggest that HTC prevents oxidant-induced cell injury and lipid peroxidation by increasing the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase in renal cortical slices.

Preparation of Ferroelectric $YMnO_3$ Thin Films by Metal-Organic Decomposition Process and their Characterization (Metal-Organic Decomposition법에 의한 강유전성 $YMnO_3$ 박막의 제조 및 특성)

  • The ferroelectric YMnO3 thin films were prepared by MOD(metal-organic decomposition) method with Y- and Mn-acetylacetonate as starting materials. Thin films were grown on various substrates by spin-coating technique. The crystalline phases of the thin films were identified by X-ray diffractometer as a function of heat-treatment temperature, pH of coating solution and substrate. In addition, the effect of Mn/Y molar ratio(0.8~1.2) on the formation of hexagonal-YMnO3 phase was investigated. In forming highly c-axisoriented hexagonal-YMnO3 single phase, the Pt coated Si substrate was more effective than the bare Si substrate, and the optimum heat-treatment condition was at 82$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Higher Mn/Y molar ratio within 0.8~1.2 and pH of YMnO3 precursor solution within 0.5~2.5 favored formation of ferroelectric hexagonal phase rather than orthorhombic phase. Leakage current density of the hexagonal-YMnO3 thin film formed on Pt(111)/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate was low enough as 0.4~4.0$\times$10-8(A/$\textrm{cm}^2$) at 5 V and its remanent polarization(Pr), calculated from the P-E hysteresis loop, was 3 nC/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • A bacterial strain producing intracellular phytase was isolated from cultivable soil near cowsheds and identified as a fluorescent Pseudomonas sp. BUN1. The BUN1 phytase, partially purified by cation and anion exchange chromatography, exhibited its optimal activity at $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 5.5. As for substrate specificity, it was very specific for phytate and showed little activity on other phosphorylated conjugates. Its activity was greatly inhibited by metal ions such as $Cu^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$. Addition of corn starch to PSM (phytasesynthetic medium) [0.5% sodium phytate, 0.5% $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, 0.5% KCl, 0.01% $MgSO_4\cdot7H_2O$, 0.01% $CaCl_2\cdot2H_2O$, 0.01% NaCl, 0.001% $FeSO_4\cdot7H_2O$, 0.001% $MnSO_4\cdot4H_2O$; pH 6.5] for the phytase production significantly induced its enzyme activity in comparison with other carbon sources tested.
