  • The porous silica glass prepared by the sol-gel method from the mixed solution of Si(OCH3)4, H2O, HCl and CH3OH with HCONH2 as a DCCA (Drying Control Chemical Additives). For investigation the characteristics of gels and glasses, we examined gels and glasses using TG-DTA, XRD, IR, SEM and porosimeter. The more content of formamide in the mixed solution increased, the more pore size and porosity of gel increased. In the excess formamide added gel, the properties of pore of gel were not so changed. The porous silica glass was prepared from the dry gel after heat treatment at 75$0^{\circ}C$. Porosity and mean pore size of the porous silica glass was 17~25% and 40~60$\AA$ relatively.

  • Polyphosphate (polyP) plays diverse physiological functions in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, but most of their detailed mechanisms are still obscure. Here, we show that deletion of polyphosphate kinase (PPK), the principal enzyme responsible for synthesis of polyP, resulted in augmented expression of cAMP receptor protein (CRP) and rpoS and lowered $H_2O_2$ sensitivity in Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028. The binding of cAMP-CRP complex to rpoS promoter and further stimulation of its transcription were proved through electrophoretic mobility shift assay, lacZ fusion, and exogenous cAMP addition, respectively. The rpoS expression increased in cpdA (cAMP phosphodiesterase coding gene) mutant, further suggesting that cAMP-CRP upregulated rpoS expression. These results demonstrate that PPK affects oxidative stress response by modulating crp and rpoS expression in S. Typhimurium.

  • An alkaloidal component was extracted from the root of Aconitum koreanum R. $R_{AYMOND}$ of the commercial origin. Crude extract was obtained in ca. 2% yield out of dried root with ether-methanol (10:1). White amorphous compound was precipitated out from the HCl solution upon the addition of ammonia water, and crude base was obtained by extraction of its mother liquid with chloroform. This crude base was purified by the alumina-column chromatographic method. A pure alkaloidal component(500mg) was yielded from its crude base. Its pure base comes as needle crystals melting at $250{\sim}252^{\circ}C$ (decomp.), $[\alpha]^{20}_D$ D+9.82 (methanol) and Anal. calcd. for $C_{19}H_{27}O_{8}N$.

  • A method to determine As(V) ions in aqueous solution by chemiluminescence method has been studied using a stopped flow system. The method is based on the increased chemiluminescence intensity with the addition of As(V) ion to a solution of lucigenin and hydrogen peroxide. The effects of KOH concentration, $H_2O_2$ concentration and flow rate of reagents on the chemiluminescence intensity have been investigated. The calibration curve for As(V) was linear over the range from $1.0{\times}l0^{-6}$M to $1.0{\times}l0^{-4}$M, the coefficient of correlation was 0.997 and the detection limit was $3.3{\times}l0^{-7}$M under the optimal experimental conditions.

  • The application of flexo printed ONP and OCC leads to brightness decrease of deinked stock in ONP recycling system. The largest problems are due to accumulation of flexo ink & introduction of brown fibers. All these are emphasized by variations in the amount of flexo printed ONP and OCC in recovered ONP stock. Most of the brightness problems caused by flexo ink can be helped and solved by applying a proper polyelectrolytes as coagulation agent and flocculation agent. This requires exact evaluation of sedimentation or dissolved air flotation potentials of flexo ink and polyelectrolytes. Effect of bleaching chemical (H2O2) addition level on the increase of brightness of OCC included stock has been investigated by lab scale test.

  • The effect of alum$(Al{\cdot}K(SO_4)_2{\cdot}12H_{2}O)$ on the activity of raw starch-digesting enzyme produced by alkali-tolerant Bacillus sp. was investigated. In adding alum of 0.5%(w/w), activities of raw starch-digesting enzyme on the gelatinized and raw rice starches have not been inhibited. In case of adding alum of 5%(w/w), competitive and uncompetitive inhibition were observed for the gelatinized and raw rice starches, respectively. The inhibitory effect on the raw starch was much higher than that on the gelatinized starch.

  • High heat-resistant Al-Fe-V-Si and Al-Fe-V-Si-X rapidly solidified powder metallurgy (RS P/M) alloys have been developed under well-controlled high purity argon gas atmosphere. The $Al_{90.49}Fe_{6.45}V_{0.68}Si_{2.38}$ (at. %) RS P/M alloy exhibited high elevated-temperature strength exceeding 300 MPa and good ductility with elongation of 6 % at 573 K. Reduction of $H_2O$ partical pressure in P/M processing atmosphere led to improvement in mechanical properties of the powder-consolidated alloys under elevated-temperature service conditions. Ti addition to the Al-Fe-V-Si conduced to enhancement of the strength at room temperature. The tensile yeild strength and ultimate strenght were 545 MPa and 722 MPa, respectively.

  • The sonochemical Process has been applied as a treatment method and was investigated its effect on the decomposition of humic substances(HS). The reaction kinetics and mechanisms in the Process of sonochemical treatment for humic substances(HS) in wastewater have also been discussed. It was observed that the metal ions such as Fe(II) and Mn(II) showed catalytic effects, while Al(III), Ca(II), and Mg(II) had inhibitory effects on the decomposition of humic substances in sonochemical reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Experimental results also showed factors such as hydrogen peroxide dose affected the formation of disinfection by-products. Two trihalomethanes, chloroform and dichlorobromomethane were formed as major disinfection by-products during chlorination. The mechanism of radical reaction is controlled by an oxidation process. The radicals are so reactive that most of them are consumed by HS radicals and hydroxyl radicals can be acted on organic solutes by hydroxyl addition, hydrogen abstraction, and electron transfer. The depolymerization and the radical reaction of HS radicals appear to occur simultaneously. The final steps of the reaction are the conversion of organic acids to carbon dioxide.

  • Antioxidative compounds contained in roasted safflower seeds were investigated. Six phenolic compounds, N-feruloylserotonin, N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin, matairesinol, 8'-hydroxyarctigenin, acacetin 7-Ο-β-D-glucoside(tilianine) and acacetin were isolated and identified from the extract of seeds. The inhibitory effects of six phenolic compounds on 1,1-dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical and lipid peroxidation induced by H₂O₂/FeSO₄in rat liver microsomes were determined. Two serotonins showed more potent DPPH radical scavenging activity, and a stronger inhibitory effect on the lipid peroxidation than that of α-tocopherol. In addition, acacetin and matairesinol also considerably inhibited lipid peroxidation, while 2-hydroxy-arctigenin and tilianine were inactive. These results suggest that phenolic compounds, including serotonins, lignans and flavonoids in the roasted safflower seeds can be used as potential dietary natural antioxidants.

  • Whisker-type magnesium hydroxide sulfate hydrate ($5Mg(OH)_2{\cdot}MgSO_4{\cdot}3H_2O$, abbreviated 513 MHSH), is used in filler and flame-retardant composites based on its hydrate phase and its ability to undergo endothermic dehydration in fire conditions, respectively. In general, the length of whiskers is determined according to various synthetic conditions in a hydrothermal reaction with high temperature (${\sim}180^{\circ}C$). In this work, high-quality 513 MHSH whiskers are synthesized by controlling the concentration of the raw material in ambient conditions without high pressure. Particularly, the concentration of the starting material is closely related to the length, width, and purity of MHSH. In addition, a ceramic-coating system is adopted to enhance the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the MHSH whiskers. The physical properties of the silica-coated MHSH are characterized by an abrasion test, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy.
