A Gap Prepulse with a Principal Stimulus Yields a Combined Auditory Late Response

  • Background and Objectives: The gap prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response has been used to screen tinnitus in an animal model. Here, we examined changes in the auditory late response under various conditions of gap prepulse inhibition. Subjects and Methods: We recruited 19 healthy adults (5 males, 14 females) and their auditory late responses were recorded after various stimuli with or without gap prepulsing. The N1 and P2 responses were selected for analysis. The gap prepulse inhibition was estimated to determine the optimal auditory late response in the gap prepulse paradigm. Results: We found that the gap per se generated a response that was very similar to the response elicited by sound stimuli. This critically affected the gap associated with the maximal inhibition of the stimulus response. Among the various gap-stimulus intervals (GSIs) between the gap and principal stimulus, the GSI of 150 ms maximally inhibited the response. However, after zero padding was used to minimize artifacts after a P2 response to a gap stimulus, the differences among the GSIs disappeared. Conclusions: Overall, the data suggest that both the prepulse inhibition and the gap per se should be considered when using the gap prepulse paradigm to assess tinnitus in humans.

  • The accurate determination of the fuel-cladding gap conductance as functions of rod burnup and power level may be a key to the design and safety analysis of a reactor. The incorporation of a sophisticated gap conductance model into nuclear design code for computing thermal hydraulic feedback effect has not been implemented mainly because of computational inefficiency due to complicated behavior of gap conductance. To avoid the time-consuming iteration scheme, simplification of the gap conductance model is done for the current design model. The simplified model considers only the heat conductance contribution to the gap conductance. The simplification is made possible by direct consideration of the gas conductivity depending on the composition of constituent gases in the gap and the fuel-cladding gap size from computer simulation of representative power histories. The simplified gap conductance model is applied to the various fuel power histories and the predicted gap conductances are found to agree well with the results of the design model.

POOL BOILING HEAT TRANSFER IN A VERTICAL ANNULUS WITH A NARROWER UPSIDE GAP

  • The effects of the narrowed upside gap on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer in a vertical annulus were investigated experimentally. For the study, a stainless steel tube with a diameter of 25.4 mm and saturated water that kept an atmospheric condition were used. The ratio between the gaps measured at the upper and the lower regions of the annulus ranged from 0.18 to 1. Two different lengths of the modified gap also were investigated. The change in heat transfer due to the modified gap became evident as the gap ratio decreased and the length of the gap increased. As the gap ratio became less than 0.51, a significant decrease in heat transfer was observed compared to the plain annulus. The longer gap size resulted in an additional decrease in heat transfer. The major cause for the tendency was attributed to the formation of lumped bubbles around the upper region of the annulus followed by the increased flow friction between the fluid and the surface around the modified gap.

  • A high voltage pulse generator with a rotator airhole spark gap instead of a rotary ball spark gap has been proposed and investigated. Its feasibility as a high voltage pulse generator is compared with the rotary ball spark gap type one. Parametric studies showed that proposed the rotary airhole type spark gap had a very stable breakdown voltage and reliable pulse repetition time compared with the conventional rotary ball type spark gap. This however showed that the proposed pulse generator with a rotary airhole spark gap instead of a rotary ball spark gap could be potentially used as a very stable and reliable pulse generator in the various fields of applications.

신갈나무림의 Gap 내 재생과정 (Regeneration Process in Gap of Quercus mongolica Forest)

  • 충북 제천시 소재 월악산 문수봉의 신갈나무림에서 gap연령이 다른 3개 지소와 성숙림인 1개 지소로 나누어 gap내 신갈나무의 재생과정을 밝혀 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 식생조성은 gap형성 초기 에 관목층에서는 조록싸리, 물푸레나무, 미역줄나무, 신갈나무, 국수나무 등의 우점도가 높았다 특히, 관목층 전체를 볼때 gap형성 초기에는 개체수가 상당히 많으나 gap 연령이 증가할 수록 교목층을 형성 할 수 있는 신갈나무와 물푸레나무 등의 기저면적의 증가에 의한 피음으로 관목층의 개체수는 감소하였다. gap내에는 어린 개체가 많고 점차 감소하는 역 J자형의 분포를 나타내고 gap 연령이 증가하면서 gap내에서 급속한 성장으로 교목층을 형성하는 신갈나무의 피음에 의해 부분적으로 고사된 개체가 나타나는 것 을 볼 수 있.었다. 성숙림 에서는 어린 개체가 거의 없었으나 수령이 130년 이상인 개체가 주로 나타났고 이 들 중 한개 또는 그 이상의 개체가 어떤 교란요인에 의해서 Gap이 형성되면 이곳에 어린개체가 침입되어 재생이 이루어질 것으로 생각된다. 본 신갈나무림은 gap형성 후 gap 내에 침입한 신갈나무가 교목층을 형성하는 연령인 약 35∼40년 이후 부터 수령이 130∼330년 되는 성숙림까지 다른 신갈나무 유묘의 침입은 없지만 다른 수종으로 대치되는 것이 아니라 성숙림의 gap형성에 의해 불연속적인 재생으로 계속 유지되는 것으로 생각된다.

MR Damper의 Gap Size에 따른 제어성능 분석 (Analysis of Control Performance in Gap Size of MR Damper)

  • 본 연구에서는 MR Damper의 제어력을 결정하는 다양한 요인들 중, 유로폭(Gap Size)을 다르게 선정하여 그에 따른 제어력의 변화를 확인하였다. 이를 위해 Gap Size 1.0mm, 1.5mm인 MR Damper 두 대를 제작하고 인가전류와 가진조건을 정하였으며 그에 따른 동하중 실험을 수행하였다. 실험결과 최소제어력은 Gap Size 1.0mm 조건이 Gap Size 1.5mm 조건보다 3.2배 높았으며 최대제어력은 Gap Size 1.0mm 조건이 Gap Size 1.5mm 조건보다 2.3배 높았다. 또한, 인가전류에 따른 제어력의 증가폭은 Gap Size 1.0mm일 때 34N, Gap Size 1.5mm일 때 12.7N으로 나타났다. Gap Size가 커질수록 전체 제어력과 인가전류에 따른 제어력의 증가는 감소하였다. 두 개의 MR Damper의 동적범위를 확인해 본 결과 Gap Size 1.0mm일 때 평균 2.3, Gap Size 1.5mm일 때 평균 2.8인 것을 볼 때 두 MR Damper의 준능동제어장치로써 사용가능성을 확인하였다.

비보호좌회전에서의 간격수락 행태모형 개발 (Development of Gap Acceptance Models for Permitted Left Turn Intersections)

  • PURPOSES : Permitted left turn is a turning maneuver in which a vehicle turns left using a gap between oncoming vehicles, called gap acceptance, and it enables for more efficient traffic operation at intersections. In Korea, the permitted left turn has not been a common maneuver at signalized or un-signalized intersections. However, many experts and the Police Agency tried to apply this effective turning maneuver at intersections in Korea since 2010. Though the investigation of gap acceptance is significantly important in understanding a driver's behavior at intersections, there have not been many studies about this topic, specifically a study to develop probability models of gap acceptance behavior. METHODS : In this study, the probability model of gap acceptance behavior for a permitted left turn was developed based on observational field studies. To develop the model, seven variables were analyzed including gap, waiting time, traffic volume, conflict-flow vehicle type, left-turning vehicle type, the number of lane, and time. RESULTS : In the final model, gap and left-turning vehicle type were found to be significant influencing factors. CONCLUSIONS : Through this model development, it was concluded that as the gap size increased, the probability of gap acceptance was higher. Moreover, when a left-turning vehicle was a passenger car, the probability of gap acceptance was higher than compared to large size buses or freight cars.

GAP 군집화에 기반한 필기 한글 단어 분리 (Word Segmentation in Handwritten Korean Text Lines based on GAP Clustering)

  • 본 논문에서는 필기 한글 문자열 영상에 대한 단어 분리 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 방법은 gap 의 크기 정보를 사용하여 단어를 분리하는데, 이때 gap은 문자열 영상을 수직방향으로 투영한 후 흰-런 (white-run)을 찾음으로써 구할 수 있다. 문자열 영상으로부터 얻어지는 gap들의 크기를 측정한 후, 각각의 gap을 단어와 단어사이에 존재하는 gap과 문자와 문자사이에 존재하는 gap 중 하나로 분류한다. 본 논문에서는 필기 영문 문자열의 단어 분리를 위해 제안된 기존의 세 가지 거리 척도를 채택하고 군집화에 기반한 세 가지 분류방법을 적용하여 한글 문자열의 단어 분리를 위한 최적의 조합을 선정하였다. 우편봉투 상에 작성된 주소열로부터 수작업으로 추출한 305 개의 문자열 영상을 사용하여 실험한 결과 BB(bounding box) 거리를 사용하여 순차적 군집 방법을 적용하는 경우 3 순위까지의 누적 단어 분리 성공률이 88.52% 로서 가장 우수한 성능을 보여 주었다. 또한 하나의 문자열 영상에 대한 단어 분리 속도는 약 0.05초이다.

차실 소음 저감을 위한 복층 에어갭 공명기가 설치된 음향 공동의 강제 음향 응답 해석 (Forced Acoustic Response Analysis of an Acoustic Cavity with a Double Air-gap Resonator for Reducing Passenger Compartment Noises)

  • A theoretical formulation on the forced acoustic response of an enclosed cavity having a double air-gap resonator on one of boundary panels of the cavity is developed in the paper. The double gap resonator consists of two air-gaps and two partition sheets as in the author's previous papers. This paper reveals that the double gap resonator reduces the level of a target noise peak by splitting the peak as two small peaks, and that it is more effective when it is designed so that the upper gap thickness is larger than the lower gap thickness under the constraint that the entire gap thickness is fixed as a constant value. Finally, verification experiments show that the theoretical formulation and analysis results are valid by comparing theoretical results with experimental ones.

  • The roll gap set-up in the finishing mill is one of the most important technologies in the hot plate rolling process. As the target thickness can be obtained by the correct set-up of the roll gap, improving the roll gap set-up technology is very critical for plate thickness accuracy. The main cause of thickness variation in hot plate mills is the non-uniform temperature distribution along the length of the slab. The objective of this study is to adjust the roll gap set-up for the thickness accuracy of plate in hot rolling process considering top-end temperature drop. Therefore this study has concentrated on determining the correct amounts of roll gap to compensate thickness variation due to top-end temperature drop. The off-line simulation of compensated roil gap significantly decreases top-end thickness variation.
