The effect of rare earth(RE) at three difference levels of nitrogen on the growth and nitrate content of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) were studied in terms of leaf size, fresh and dry weight increase, and chlorophyll and nitrate content grown in plastic pots within glasshouse. Leaf size was enlarged as the level of nitrogen applied was high, and leaf within, length, and thickness of leaf were increased by RE treatment showing significant difference at high nitrogen(N+1) plot. As the level of nitrogen applied was high, as fresh and dry weight per plant was increased significantly(p<0.05), and sprinkling cabbage with RE increased fresh and dry matter yield to 2∼12, 4∼6.2% more, respectively. Dry matter content of Chinese cabbage was increased by RE sprinkling. At all levels of nitrogen fertilized chlorophyll contents were increased by RE treatment. As the level of nitrogen was high, as the content of chlorophyll was highly increased by RE. Nitrate was accumulated more at high level of nitrogen application, but nitrate was decreased by RE application, 40% decrease at very high nitrogen plot(N+2). RE stimulated the growth of chicory with high chlorophyll content, and showed the possibility producing high quality agricultural products low in nitrate content.
The present experiment was undertaken to study the influence of light intensity on plug establishment of zoysia-82, chewings fescue and red fescue. The results obtained are summarized as follows : In chewings fescue and zoysia-82, plant height and leaf length were increased and leaf width was decreased by reducing light intensity. But in red fescue, plant height and leaf length measured at 90 and 120 days after plugging under 9% of incident light were shorter than those under 30% of incident light. Percent ground cover was decreased by reducing light intensity in chewings fescue, red fescue and zoysia-82. Each part of dry weight in three species was getting lighter by reducing light intensity. Decrease of light intensity in zoysia-82 causes increasing chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll content. But red fescue and chewings fescue had the most plentiful chlorophyll under 30% of incident light. Chewings fescue and red fescue had the lowest concentration of chlorophyll a/b under natural light intensity. But zoysia-82 had the lowest concentration of chlorophyll a/b under 30% of incident light. Tillering number of chewings fescue and red fescue was decreased by reducing light intensity. Internode length of zoysia-82 was longer in the order of : 1) 30% of incident light, 2) natural light, 3) 9% of incident light. And internode diameter was decreased by reducing light intensity.

For investigating the activities of algicidal bacteria, the variations of algicidal bacterial population and chlorophyll-a were checked weekly in Chindong Bay, Korea from May to July, 1998. For identifying their killing characteristics, three strains were selected from the isolated algicidal bacteria. The density of algicidal bacteria kept changing in the range of $6.0\times10^1$ to $6.4\times10^5$ cell $\ell^{-1}$. The density flux of algicidal bacteria coincided with that of chlorophyll-a by a week of lag time. Three algicidal bacteria isolated from field strains, H519S5-4, H605S5-15 and H605S5-22, were investigated in nine microalgal species, Heterosigma akashiwo, Chattonella sp. (Raphidlphyceae), Gymnodinium catenatum, Gyrodinium impudicum, Cochlodinium polyklikoides (Dinophyceae), Chaetoceros sp., Coscinodiscus granii, Ditylum brightwellii, Thalassiosira rotula (Bacillariophyceae). Strain H605S5-22 showed a wide algicidal activities over nine microlgae, strain H605S5-15 over H. akashiwo, G. catenatum, T. rotula, Chattonella sp. and strain H519S5-4 over H. akashiwo, Chattonella sp., Chaetoceros sp., G. catenatum. The activities of the three strains were detected by the secretion of algicidal substances. Therefore, it is suggested that the activities of algicidal bacteria have a significant influence over the population dynamics of phytoplankton and get involved with the sharp decrease in red tides in the coastal area.
The toxic effects of aluminium (Al) on growth, chlorophyll content, $\delta-aminolevulinic$ acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity and anatomy of root and shoot were investigated in 7-day-old azuki bean (Vigna angularis) seedlings. Significant depressions in root elongation was observed in the low concentrations of Al (50, 100 $\muM)$ and increasing Al concentrations caused a sharp decline of root and shoot growth. The degree of inhibition was dependent upon Al supply. Exposure to 50 $\muM$ Al or more inhibited root elongation within 1 day. In the 50 $\muM$ Al treatments, a recovery of root growth was seen after 7 days exposure. In contrast, lateral root initials was little affected by Al exposure. Al toxicity symptoms and growth responses were more well developed in the roots than in the shoots. Analysis of Al localization in root cells by hematoxylin stAlning showed that Al entered root apices and accumulated in the epidermal and cortical cells immeadiately below the epidermis. There was a good positive correlation between the level of chlorophyll and ALAD activity. Increasing Al concentrations caused a decrease in total chlorophyll contents, accompanied by proportional changes in ALAD activity, suggesting a cootr-dinated reduction of a photosynthetic machinery. Al exerted specific influence on the morphology of root ann shoot. At higher concentrations of Al the roots induced drastic anatomical changes. The epidermal cells were disorganized or destructed while the cortical cells exhibited distortion of cell shape and/or disintegration. The diameter of root and transectional area of cortical cells decreased considerably with Al treatment. In the shoot Al also enhanced reduction of diameter of shoot and cell size. Gross anatomy of leaves treated with Al did not differ significantly from the controls, except for fewer and smaller chloroplast. Our results indicate that toxic effect of Al appear to be manifested primarily in roots and secondarily on shoots, and changes in root morphology are related to changes in the root growth patterns. Results are further discussed in re181ion to the findings in other plant species, and it is concluded that Al causes morphological, structural and, presumably, functional damage to the roots of the species investigated.
This present study was conducted to investigate photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll contents of Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Prunus leveilleana, Magnolia sieboldii, growing under four different light intensity regimes (full sun, and 64~73%, 35~42%, 9~16% of full sun). As result, Betula platyphylla var. japonica showed outstanding photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in full sun and showed low shade tolerance. Prunus leveilleana showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in 64~73% or 35~42% of full sun and showed common shade tolerance. However, Magnolia sieboldii showed good photosynthetic capacity and apparent quantum yield in 35~42% of full sun, while the lowest in full sun. Magnolia sieboldii showed the highest shade tolerance compared to the other species. As the shading level increased, the total chlorophyll contents of all species increased with significant difference.

In this study, one studied the principal factors and water-quality components that determine the concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in seawater in estuaries, such as the Han, Geum, Youngsan, Seomjin, and Nakdong rivers in Korea. The principal factors determining the concentration of COD in seawater indicated by the principal component analysis were salinity, exogenous origin and autochthonous resources based on chlorophyll-a. Moreover, organic matter in the submarine sediment layer also had a secondary effect. Regression slope assessed the contribution of water-quality components to determine the concentration of COD in the estuary. One found that the effect of salinity on the overall survey was significant. Moreover, the effect of chlorophyll-a was also appeared in April and August. In each estuary, the most significant contribution factor was chlorophyll-a in the Nakdong River and salinity in the Han and Yongsan rivers. The contribution of salinity and chlorophyll-a were found to be the largest in the Geum River. The salinity and chlorophyll-a in the Seomjin River showed a low contribution.
Chlorophyll-a concentrations of phytoplankton and primary productivities in closed marine ecosystem, Inchon Dock, were measured and analyzed monthly from August, 1990 to December, 1991. Chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged from 1.61 to $28.67\;\mu\textrm{g}\;Chi-a/I$, where nanoplankton ($2-20\;\mu\textrm{m}$) fractions contributed in 19.0-82.3% and picoplankton ($0.2-2\;\mu\textrm{m}$) fractions in 4.5-51.4%. Primary productivities measured by $^{14}C$ method ranged from 49.4 to $4359.4\;mg\;C{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-I}$, where nanoplankton ($20\;\mu\textrm{m}$) contributed in 18.8-94.6%. These results implied that very tiny cell-sized phytoplankton populations were important in point of chlorophyll-a concentration and primary productivity of phytoplankton community. In monthly variations of chlorophyll-a concentration by phytoplankton, the first peak occurred in March and the second in August. Nitrogen requirement by phytoplankton ranged from 0.7 to $60.7\;mg\;at-N{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-I}$ and the turnover time of inorganic nitrogen showed maximum during winter and minimum in summer. Carbon assimilation number increased in summer and decreased in winter.winter.
In order to understand the relationship between succession of phytoplankton community structure and inorganic nutrients and particulate organic matters, a one station in Kyungan stream in Korea during the dry season was chosen. Water samplings were carried out once a week from 18 August to 13 November 1993. The DIN concentration distributed always abundantly, however, phosphate and silicate gradually reduced during the period. Phytoplankton community had a peak chlorophyll a concentration of $90.6\;{\mu}g/l$ in late summer (21 August 1993) and a second peak of $29.7\;{\mu}g/l$ in autumn (2 October 1993). After then late autumn was characterined by relatively low chlorophyll a concentration of $15{\sim}16\;{\mu}g/l$. Seasonal fluctuation of chlorophyll a concentrations were correlated with measured POC and PON concentrations: phytoplankton blooming may be a major factor controlling POC and PON concentrations in this ecosystem. Phosphate plays an most important role as a limiting factor of phytoplankton growth. However, when Si/P ratio low, silicate may be a more critical limiting factor than phosphate. Shifts of P-limitation to Si- limitation the succession of dominant phytoplankton can in duce: diatom to cyanobacteria such as Anabaena, Microcystis and Oscillatoria.
This study was conducted to investigate the physiological responses of Bupleurum latissimum, endangered plants by light condition. We investigated photosynthetic parameters, chlorophyll contents and chlorophyll fluorescence under different shading treatments (Shaded 50%, 70%, 90% and non-treated). Results showed that net apparent quantum yield (AQY) and chlorophyll contents were significantly increased with elevating shading level. However, light compensation point (LCP) and dark respiration ($R_d$) were shown the opposite trend. Especially, non-treated exhibited photoinhibition such as reduction of chlorophyll contents and maximum photosynthesis rate ($Pn_{max}$) also variation trend of stomatal conductance ($g_s$), and transpiration rate (E) were decreased to prevent water loss. Photosynthetic rate ($P_{Nmax}$) and photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) of 90% treatment showed a drastic reduction in July. This implies that photosynthetic activity will be sharply decreased with a long period of low light intensity. The 50% treatment showed relatively higher photosynthetic activity than other treated. This result suggested that growth and physiology of B. latissimum adapted to 50% of full sunlight.
To select $SO_2$-resistant tree species, leaf disks of 6mm in diameter, cut from the leaves of 6 species (Wistaria floribunda, Magnolia obovata, Rosa multiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera, Robinia pseudo-acacia and Acer palmatum) were floated on 25ml of testing medium and placed on laboratory under fluorescent lamp (1,500 Lux) for 20 hours. Chlorophyll content and acidity of the testing medium were measured. Testing medium was prepared by diluting $H_2SO_4$, $H_2SO_3$ and $Na_2SO_4$ with distilled water for various stoichiometric $SO_2$ concentrations, 0, 25, 50, 100 and 250 ppm. Total chlorophyll content was more decreased after treatment than before treatment, and was decreased more severely in $H_2SO_3$ sources, followed by $H_2SO_4$ and $Na_2SO_4$, sources. Decreasing rate of total chlorophyll content was generally large in Acer palmatum. Magnolia obovata and Wistaria floribunda, and was relatively small in Rosa multiflora, Liriodendron tulipifera and Robinia pseudo-acacia. Decreasing rate of chlorophyll content may be useful index for judging susceptifility of the leaf to $SO_2$. The acidity of the testing medium was generally decreased after treatment, and it means that cell leakage was occurred during treatment. The differences in medium acidity between before and after treatment may be poot index for susceptibility of the leaf to $SO_2$ owing to the difference among tree species in development of leaf mesophyll, acidity maintaining mechanism and butter capacity of the leaf tissue.
