Calibration gas mixtures were prepared using dynamic volumetric method according to ISO 6145-5 and the uncertainty was evaluated. Ten identical capillaries with 0.25 mm in inner diameter and 50 cm in length were applied in this system. Dilution ratio of parent gas was determined by the number of capillaries that passes parent gas and that passes balance gas through. Capillaries were made of Teflon which had good chemical stability against adsorption of gaseous substances. Mechanical valves were introduced in this system in order to minimize the thermal effect of solenoid valves. Concentration of prepared gases were compared with master grade standard gases in cylinders made by RiGAS Co. and calibration of the instrument were completed using comparison method according to ISO 6143. Experimental results showed that the coefficient of variance of diluted oxygen standard gases showed less then 0.2% in most dilution range, that of diluted hydrogen sulfide standard gases showed less then 1.0%. Therefore, it is proven that the standard gases prepared by this system are appropriate to be used as a calibration standards in ambient monitoring, etc.
A green microalga, Chlorella vulgaris UTX 259, was cultivated in a bench-scale raceway pond. During the culture, 15%(v/v) $CO_2$ was supplied and industrial wastewater discharged from a steel-making plant was used as a culture medium. In a small scale culture bottle, the microalga grew up to 1.8 g $dm^{-3}$ of cell concentration and ammonia was completely removed from the wastewater with an yield coefficient of 25.7 g dry cell weight $g^{-1}\;NH_3-N$. During the bottle-culture, microalga was dominant over heterotrophic microorganisms in the culture medium. Therefore, the amount of carbon dioxide fixation could be estimated from the change of dry cell weight. In a semi-continuous operation of raceway pond with intermittent lighting (12 h light and 12 h dark), increase of dilution rate resulted in increase of the ammonia removal rate as well as the $CO_2$ fixation rate but the ammonia removal efficiency decreased. Ammonia was not completely removed from the medium (wastewater) of raceway pond which was operated in a batch mode under a light intensity up to 20 klux. The incomplete removal of ammonia was believed due to insufficient light supply. A mathematical model, capable of predicting experimental data, was developed in order to simulate the performance of the raceway pond under the light intensity of sun during a bright daytime. Simulation results showed that the rates of $CO_2$ fixation and ammonia removal could be enhanced by increasing light intensity. According to the simulation, 80 mg $dm^{-3}$ of ammonia in the medium could be completely removed if the light intensity was over 60 klux with a continuous lighting. Under the optimal operating condition determined by the simulation, the rates of carbon dioxide fixation and ammonia removal in the outdoor operation of raceway pond were estimated as high as $24.7 g m^{-2} day^{-1}$ and $0.52 g NH_3-N m^{-2} day^{-1}$, respectively.

Hi Air Korea and Hanwha ocean are currently developing an Onboard Carbon dioxide Capture System (OCCS) to absorb CO2 emitted from ship's engine using a sodium hydroxide(NaOH) solution, and converting the resulting salt into a solid form through a chemical reaction with calcium oxide (CaO). The system process involves the following steps; 1)The reaction of CO2 gas absorption in water, 2)The reaction between carbonic acid (H2CO3) and NaOH solution to produce carbonate or bicarbonate, and 3)The reaction between carbonate or bicarbonate and CaO to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3). And ultimately, the solid material, CaCO3, is separated and discharged using a separator. The OCCS has been installed on an ship and the test results have confirmed significant reduction effects of CO2 in the ship's exhaust gas. A portion of the exhaust gas emitted from the engine was transferred to the OCCS using a blower. The flow rate of the transferred gas ranged from 800 to 1384 m3/hr, and the CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas was 5.1 vol% for VLSFO, 3.7 vol% for LNG and a 12 wt% NaOH solution was used. The results showed a CO2 capture efficiency of approximately 42.5 to 64.1 vol% and the CO2 capture rate approximately 48.4 to 52.2kg/hr. Additionally, to assess the impact of the discharged CaCO3on the marine ecosystem, we conducted "marine ecotoxicity test" and performed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to evaluate the dispersion and dilution of the discharged effluent.

Shigella remains to be an important enteric pathogen in this country for the moment. Moreover, since 1978, most of the isolates have become resistant to ampicillin and co-trimoxazole, which used to be the drugs of choice for shigellosis. Since a disc diffusion technique alone has been used in our routine susceptibility test, the minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC) of both ampicillin and co-trimoxazole to Shigella have never been known. In order to determine these, 195 isolates were tested by an agar dilution method, all of which were isolated at Yonsei Medical Center during the period of June 1978 to July 1980. The following results were obtained. 1. Sixty cultures(29.7%) were susceptible to ampicillin, being the MIC of 8 ${\mu}g/ml$ or less and 53(27.2%) were susceptible to co-trimoxazole, being the MIC of TMP/SMZ 4/76 ${\mu}g/ml$ or less. S. flexneri type 2 was often resistant to both antimicrobic agents. 2. An increasing rate of resistant isolates was noted, particularly in the year of 1979. 3. Many isolates were resistant to both agents. Somewhat more cultures. were ampicillin susceptible and co-trimoxazole resistant than the other way around. It seems that the determination of species or even serotypes might be of help sometimes to select proper antimicrobic agent to control the infection. A routine antimicrobic susceptibility test of Shigella to both ampicillin and co-trimoxazole would be advisable for a better selection of chemotherapeutic agent.

The combustion characteristics have been investigated to develop the 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor. The combustor design program was developed and applied to design this combustor. The combustion air which has the temperature of 45, 200, $300^{\circ}C$ were supplied to combustor for elucidating the effect of inlet air temperature on CO, NOx emissions and flame temperature. The exit temperature and NO were increased and CO was decreased with increasing inlet air temperature. Also, the effect of equivalence ratio was considered to verify the combustor performance. The emissions of CO and NO with inlet air temperature can be analyzed qualitatively by measuring the temperature inside the combustor. The combustion performance with fuel schedule was evaluated to get the informations of the starting and part loading process of gas turbine. The combustion was stable above the equivalence ratio of 0.18. The pattern factor which is the important parameter of combustor performance was satisfied with the design criterion. Consequently the combustor was proved to meet the performance goal required for the target gas turbine system.
This study was performed to examine use of the pump-and-treat method for remediation of TCE, CF and CT in groundwater contaminated by DNAPL. The Woosan industrial complex is located in Wonju, about 120 km east of Seoul, Korea. Two pumping wells (KDPW7 and KDPW8) and five monitoring wells (KDMW7, KDMW8, KDMW9, KDMW10, and SKW2) were installed for the test. An asphalt laboratory is a main source of the extensive subsurface contamination at this site. To evaluate change in the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT in groundwater in the study area, three rounds of pump-and-treat pilot tests were performed (6 July to 6 August, 22 August to 6 September, and 19 September to 2 December in 2011). The groundwater levels and the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT exhibited negative correlations in the wet season but positive correlations in the dry season, which suggests that the TCE concentrations were mainly controlled by dilution through rainfall during the wet season and by residual TCE, CF, and CT in the unsaturated zone during the dry season. These possibilities should be considered in the full-scale remediation plan.
The suppression mechanisms of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) as a representative fire suppression agent were revisited using a counterflow diffusion flame which could be applied the concept of a local application system. To end this, the low strain rate $CH_4$/air counterflow diffusions with $CO_2$ addition in either fuel or oxidizer stream were examined numerically using detailed-kinetic chemistry. Radiative heat loss due to radiating gas species including $CO_2$ added was considered by the optically thin model (OTM). As a result, the critical $CO_2$ volume fractions in the oxidizer stream required to extinguish the flame were in good agreement with the experimental data reported in the literature, while somewhat under-prediction was observed with $CO_2$ added in the fuel stream. The surrogate agents were adopted to estimate the quantitative contribution with changing in global strain rate ($a_g$) on the flame extinguishment among pure dilution effect, thermal effects including radiation heat loss and chemical effect due to the $CO_2$ fire suppression agent.
Antimicrobial activities were assayed through the hot-water extracts from 41 species of medicinal plants against Helicobacter pylori which is known as the ulcerogenic phathogen. Opuntia ficus-indica, Houttuynia cordata, Sinomenium acutum, and Coptis japonica showed the MIC at the concentrations less than 100 ppm, Pulsatilla koreana, Forsythia koreana, Rheum undulatum, and Perilla frutescens less than 200 ppm, Belamcanda chinensis, Arctium lappa, Cassia tora, Citrus tachibana, Siegesbeckia orientalis, and Caesalpinia sappan less than 300 ppm by the 2-fold dilution method. In disc method only three of them were confirmed to have antimicrobial activities which were increased in the order Perilla frutescens, Coptis japonica, Caesalpinia sappan. Three extracts were partitioned with chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol in sequence and examined for the activity to inhibit H. pylori. The major ativities were observed in ethyl acetate fraction of Caesalpinia sappan, butanol fraction of Perilla frutescens, butanol and chloroform fraction of Coptis japonica. The partitioned fractions were found to have increased antimicrobial activities in all extracts. The experiments in which the extracts were added into urea R broth containing the crude urease derived from H. pylori resulted in the increase of pH and optical density at 560 nm to 8.15 and 1.7 respectively. Urease activity of H. pylori was inhibited over 80% by Caesalpinia sappan, Perilla frutescens, and Coptis japonica, of which Caesalpinia sappan suppressed up to 95%.
By using a premixed laminar burner, the effect of mixture component on laminar burning velocity($S_L$) was investigated. The following was made clear ; (1)As the humidity$(H_2O)$, $CO_2$ and Ar in mixture is increased, $S_L$ decreased in proportion to quantity of those dilution gases. (2) The heat reaction theory says that mean thermal conductivity $(\lambda_m)$, specific heat $(C_{pm})$ of mixture and adiabatic flame temperatures $(T_b)$ affect $S_L$. As a result of theoretical analysis, the effect of $\lambda_m\;and\;C_{pm}$ on $S_L$ is less than 1/25 of the effect of $T_b$, so the effect of $\lambda_m\;and\;C_{pm}$ can be ignored. (3) From experimental results, it was confirmed that $\ln(S_L)$ is proportional to $(1/T_b)$, that is, the effect of $H_2O$ on $S_L$ is mainly caused by changes of $T_b$. This conclusion was verified by the fact increases of $H_2O,\;CO_2$ and Ar decrease the intensity of radiation typical $C_2$, CH, and OH in the same manner.
Laser cladding is a technique for modification of metal surface. In this laser cladding experiment a metal powder feeding system was developed for more efficient laser cladding. This system can reduce processing time and be used simpler than the conventional method. The feeding of metal powder has given a rise to the process for sequential buildup of bulk rapidly solidified materials in the form of fine powder stream to the laser cladding process. The parameters of laser cladding have been investigated using this experimental equipment. Bronze on aluminum alloy and copper on aluminum alloy were experimented by using defocused beam, powder feeding system, and gas shielding. Good cladding was achieved in the range of beam travel speed of 2.25m/min. In the case of copper/aluminum and bronze/aluminum substrate, the absorption of laser beam was too high to produce low diluted clad. In the case of copper/1050 aluminum, the optimal laser cladding condition was of laser power of 2.8kW, powder feed rate of 0.31g/s and beam travel speed of 2.25m/min. In the case of bronze/aluminum the optimal condition is of laser power of 2.5kW, powder feed rate of 0.31g/s, and beam travel speed of 2.36m/min.
