Synthesis and Characterization of Calcium Derivative Combined with High-Surface-Area Activated Carbon Composites for Fine Toxic Gas Removal

  • Highly toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), and ammonia ($NH_3$) are generated by both nature and human activities and affect human health. In this research, activated carbon combined with $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ (AC-CO and AC-CC, respectively) were fabricated and applied in absorbing toxic gases from air pollutants. Activated charcoal powder was compressed in the form of pellets and used in the designated conditions. The optimum operating conditions and material properties, such as adsorption capacity, effect of weight ratio of the mixture, and hardness, have been investigated after combining with the calcium derivative. The good performance exhibited in this study suggests that this material is expected to be an effective and economically viable adsorbent for $NH_3$, $CO_2$, and $H_2S$ removal from the air system.

  • CCS($CO_2$ capture & storage) 기술의 하나인 순산소 석탄화력발전 시스템에서 시스템의 안정한 운전을 위하여 연소가스 재순환이 적용되게 된다. 연소가스 재순환시 황산화물 및 분진의 농축이 발생되게 되며 일반적인 화력발전 시스템에서 탈황 및 집진과는 다른 형태의 운전조건을 나타내게 되므로 상용 석탄화력 발전소에 적용하기에 앞서 관련 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 순산소 석탄 연소 시스템에서 황산화물 및 분진의 효과적인 제거를 위하여 석회석을 이용한 로내탈황 및 고온 전기집진에 관한 기초적인 연구를 수행하였다. 석회석을 이용한 로내탈황에서 ash에 의한 탈황효과를 포함하여 60%의 탈황효율을 나타내었고 전기집진의 경우에는 $CO_2$ 비율이 높을수록 분진입자의 크기가 클수록 코로나 전류량의 감소로 인하여 집진효율이 저하하는 것으로 나타났다.

Synthesis and application of zirconium phosphate mesoporous coordination polymer for effective removal of Co(II) from aqueous solutions

  • A kind of zirconium phosphate mesoporous coordination polymer Zr-EDTMPA was successfully synthesized and characterized using XRD, FTIR, TGA, EA, SEM-EDS, and N2 sorption-desorption measurements. The prepared Zr-EDTMPA was first employed for the removal of Co(II) from an aqueous solution, and the effects of pH, contact time, temperature, initial Co(II) concentration, reusability, and sorption mechanism were systematically investigated. The results showed that the Zr-EDTMPA is a zirconium phosphate complex formed by the coordination of EDTMPA to Zr in a molar ratio of 1:1. The sorption of Co(II) by Zr-EDTMPA was a pH-dependent, spontaneous and endothermic process, which was better fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The Zr-EDTMPA was demonstrated to have excellent reusability and presented a high sorption capacity of 73.0 mg·g-1 for Co(II) at pH 8.0. The sorption mechanism was mainly attributed to the strong coordination between cobalt and the untapped hydroxyl functional groups on Zr-EDTMPA, which was confirmed by XPS spectra. Therefore, as a candidate sorbent with high sorption capacity and excellent reusability, Zr-EDTMPA has a great potential for the removal of Co(II) from aqueous solutions.

Application of Biofilter Using Fibril-form Matrix for Odor Gas Removal

  • This research was performed for developing of biological treatment process of odor gas such as MEK, $H_{2}S$, and toluene, which is generated from the food waste recycling process. To establish the operational conditions of odor gas removal by small-scale biofiltration equipment, it was continuously operated by using toluene as a treating odor object. When the odor treating microorganisms were adhered to fibril form biofilter, high removal efficiency over 93% was obtained by biofilm formation. At 400 ppm of inlet odor gas concentration and 10 sec of retention time, the removal efficiency was 76% and 93% in 1st stage reactor and 2nd stage reactor, respectively. However, the removal efficiency remained over 97% at the operational conditions above 15 sec of retention time.

Measurement of Metal-Film Removal Rate in a Microemulsion Using QCM

  • A set of Quartz Crystal Microbalances (QCM's) was used to observe the film removal characteristics of three different $CO_2-nitric$ acid microemulsions. QCM's electroplated with nickel or copper were used as specimens. F-AOT, NP-4 and the newly synthesized Proline Surfactant-1 were used as surfactants to create microemulsions. While the F-AOT microemulsion yielded a relatively low removal rate, that of the Proline Surfactant-1 completely removed the Cu metal film within a short period of time. The NP-4 microemulsion removed the metal surface. However, removal rate measurements per QCM were not possible due to the instability of the microemulsion when Cu ions were present in the nitric solution. The reaction kinetics and metal removal capabilities of microemulsions formed by the different surfactants are explained along with the characteristics of reverse micelles.

하수중의 질소.인 제거를 위한 $A^2$/O공정의 적용 (Application of $A^2$/O Process for Removal of Nitrogen and Phosphorus in Sewage)

  • In this study, the removal efficiencies of organics, nitrogens and phosphorus from municipal wastewater using $A^2$/O process were investigated. BO $D_{5}$ removal efficiencies were indicated 95% and 94% with HRT of 12 hr and 10 hr, respectively. CO $D_{Cr}$ average removal efficiency and concentration of effluent were indicated 87% and 34mg/$\ell$. SS average removal efficiency and concentration of effluent were indicated 93% and 4~17mg/$\ell$. T-N removal efficiency and concentration of effluent were shown as 60~80% and below 15mg/$\ell$. In aerobic basin, removal efficiency of N $H_4$-N was shown over 97% with N $H_4$-N volume load 0.16kg N $H_4$-N/㎥.d and in anoxic basin, denitrification efficiency was indicated over 80% with return sludge rate 0.5Q and internal recirculation rate 2.5Q. Removal efficiency and effluent concentration of phosphorus were shown over 80% and below 2 mg/$\ell$ with return sludge rate 0.5Q.Q.

  • 본 논문에서는 아미노산염의 일종인 글리신산나트륨(sodium glycinate) 수용액을 이산화탄소(CO$_2$) 흡수제로 사용하여 이산화탄소 분리회수 특성평가 실험을 수행하였다. 흡수제와 이산화탄소의 기-액 흡수평형 실험을 통하여 흡수제 농도 20 wt%와 30 wt%에서 글리신산나트륨과 상용 흡수제인 MEA의 분압에 따른 몰부하비(mol loading ratio)를 측정하여 이산화탄소 흡수능을 평가하였다. 또한, 기-액 흡수평형 결과를 바탕으로 2 t-CO$_2$/day 용량의 파일럿플랜트 실험을 수행한 결과, 이산화탄소 탈거가 MEA에 비하여 용이하게 일어나지 않아 상대적으로 낮은 이산화탄소 제거율을 얻었다. 이는 글리신산나트륨 고유의 입체구조에 기인하는 것으로 판단된다. 본 논문은 이산화탄소 흡수제로 아미노산염 계열 흡수제를 이용하여 실제 공정에 적용한 우리나라 최초의 연구결과로서 아미노산염의 흡수제로서의 가능성 파악에 큰 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.

산-염기 처리한 게 껍질에 의한 수풍의 납 이온 제거 (Removal of Pb2+ ion from aqueous solution Using crab shell treated by acid and alkali)

  • In order to examine the pre-treatment effect of crab shell en Pb$^{2+}$ removal by crab shell in aqueous solution, acid and alkali pre-treated crab shell were used. Electron microscopy techniques such as TEM (transmission electron microscopy) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and EDX (energy dispersive X-ray) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectrometry techniques were used to investigate the process of Pb$^{2+}$ removal by acid and alkali pre-treated crab shell. The Pb$^{2+}$ removal by acid pre-treated crab shell was much lower than that by untreated crab shell because of the decrease of CaCO$_3$ from the crab shell. However, the Pb$^{2+}$removal by alkali pre-treated crab shell increased compared to that by untreated crab shell. The results were confirmed by TEM, SEM, EDX and FTIR.nd FTIR.

  • Main radionuclides of the soil waste stored in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute are Co-60 and Cs-137. Moisture content of soil is 12%, pH of soil is 5.8, and content of organic matter is 2.2 %. Radioactive concentrations of the soil particle size of which is less than 0.063mm and soil in the drum surface of which is more than radiation dose rate 0.05mR/hr are higher. Meanwhile, radioactive concentration of soil in the drum surface of which is less than radiation dose rate 0.02 mR/hr are mostly lower. On using the mixing solution of ammonium sulfate and citric acid, 62% Co was removed from soil and 41% Cs was removed. Also, on using the mixing solution of ammonium nitrate and citric acid, 61% Co was removed from soil and 39% Cs was removed, and on using the mixing solution of ammonium potassium oxalate, 36% Co was removed and only 3% Cs was removed. And on using only water, removal efficiency is less than 5%.

Preparation of the silica composite membranes for CO removal from PEMFC anode feed gas

  • Silica/SUS composite membranes were prepared for CO removal from products of methanol steam reforming. A support was prepared by coating Ni powder of sub-micron and SiO$_2$ sols of particle size of 500nm and 150nm in turns on a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate. Silica top layer was coated on the modified support using colloidal sol with nanoparticle. As a result of mixture gas permeation test of silica composite membrane using H$_2$(99%)/CO(1%), CO concentration of 10000 ppm was reduced to under 81 ppm, which is acceptable in PEMFC anode gas specification. Permeation mechanism through the membrane was mainly molecular sieving.
