  • Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in the continuous production and environmental conservation in arable soils. In particular, the decomposition of organic matter in soil might promote soil organic matter and fertility due to the mineralization of N. In this study, to evaluate the effect of organic matter amendment on the C mineralization and N dynamic, $CO_2-C$ flux, extractable N and $N_2O$ emission were determined using closed chamber for 4 weeks at 10, 15, $20^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature after the mixture of $2Mgha^{-1}$ rice straw compost and rye in sandy loam and clay loam. Regardless of soil texture, decomposition rates of rice straw compost and rye at $10{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ of incubation temperature ranged from 0.9 to 3.8% and 8.8 to 20.3%, respectively. Rye application in soil increased $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ content as well as the $N_2O$ emission compared to the rice straw compost. After incubation for 4 weeks, total C content in two soils was higher in rice straw compost than in rye application. In conclusion, application of rice straw compost and rye to soil was able to improve the soil organic matter and fertility. However, organic matter including the recalcitrant compounds like rice straw compost would be effective on the management of soil organic matter and the reduction of greenhouse gases in soil.

  • The gamma-ray shielding effects of magnetite concretes have been measured using a broad beam Co-60 gamma-ray source. Mathematical formulae for a trans-mission ratio-to-shield thickness relation were derived from the attenuation curve obtained experimentally and are I (x) = I (ο) exp(-$\mu$X) exp(1.03$\times$10$^{-1}$ X-3.38$\times$10$^{-3}$ X$^2$+5.29$\times$10$^{-5}$ X$^3$) when X< 20 cm, I (x) =I (ο) exp(-$\mu$X) exp(4.66$\times$10$^{-2}$ X+2.12$\times$10$^{-1}$ ) when X>20 cm. Here I (x) is radiation intensity after passing through a thickness X of absorber, I(o) is the initial radiation intensity, $\mu$ is the linear attenuation coefficient of magnetite concrete and is given by (0.0532$\rho$+ 0.0083)$^{4)}$ $cm^{-1}$ / in accordance with an earlier study, and X is the thickness of absorber. In addition, a model shield which is a rectangular magnetite concrete box with walls of 8cm thickness walls and internal demensions of 40$\times$40$\times$40 cm was constructed and its shielding effect has been measured. The emergent radiation flux appears to be greater with this configuration than with a slab shield of equal thickness.

  • The combined impact of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) fouling and inorganic ($CaSO_4,Ca_3(PO_4)_2$) scaling on the retention of TNT (2, 4, 6-Trinitrotoluene), RDX (Hexahydro-1, 3, 5-trinitro-1, 3, 5-triazine) and HMX (1, 3, 5, 7-Tetranitro-1, 3, 5, 7-tetrazocane) explosive contaminants by nano-filtration membrane were studied, since organic fouling and salt scaling are the major limitations for membrane filtration. Results reported here indicate that DOM fouling layer with a humic acid does not necessarily lead to an immediate loss of permeate flux but can result in a severe impact on the flux loss when both humic acid and inorganic scaltants were presented simultaneously. The $Ca_3(PO_4)_2$ mixed with humic acid showd most sever flux loss (42%) compared to that of only humic acid presence (8%). It could be a result that the scaling formation of the NF membrane was dominated by cake layer formation of DOM and it was along with pore blocking by the formation of crystals inside the porous active matrix of the NF membrane. In addition, these results indicated that the membrane selectivity of the explosives retention trended correlated with respect to increasing explosives size (listed by MW) based on greater steric interactions and followed the order (MW, g $mol^{-1}$; removal, %): HMX (296.15; 83%) ${\gg}$ RDX (222.12; 49%) ≋ TNT (227.13; 32%). Because the scaling and fouling layer could lead to a additional cake-enhanced concentration polarisation effect, the retention of explosives with the presence of humic acid in the feed solution and inorganic scaling formation on top of an organic fouling layer do not differ substantially retention from that of pure DI feed and NaCl solution.

  • This research was conducted to examine the effects of night interruption (NI) at different times on vegetative growth and flowering in Salvia splendens 'Salsa'. Plants were grown in a growth chamber under 9-h photoperiod (short-day, SD) or 9-h photoperiod plus NI with light intensity at $3-5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ photosynthetic photon flux. The NI was applied at 18:00-22:00 HR (NI18), 22:00-02:00 HR (NI22), or 02:00-06:00 HR (NI02). The net photosynthetic rate under NI18, NI22, and NI02 increased by 0.33, 0.16, and $0.13{\mu}mol{\cdot}CO_2{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, respectively, during the NI period. Dry weight, plant height, and the number of nodes under NI were not significantly different from those of the plants under SD. However, flowering was earlier by approximately 9.8 days, and the number of flowers increased to 138.7 in NI02 compared to 36.4 flowers under SD at 17 weeks after the treatment. Our results indicate that NI02 was the most effective treatment in promoting flowering. Although vegetative growth of salvia was not increased in response to the increased net photosynthesis, flowering was promoted. Under NI18, NI22, and NI02 treatments, 77.8, 88.9, and 100.0% of salvia plants flowered within 8 weeks, whereas 44.4% of the plants flowered within the same time under SD conditions.

  • Growth and anthocyanins of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L., 'Mid-season') grown under LED lamps with blue light in the range of 430-470 nm or with red light in the range of 630-670 nm were analyzed in this study. Cool-white fluorescent light was used a s the control. P hotosynthetic photon flux, p hotoperiod, air temperature, relative humidity, and $CO_2$ concentration in a closed plant production system were $201{\pm}2\;{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, 16/8 hours (day/night), $22/18^{\circ}C$, 70%, and $400{\mu}mol{\cdot}mol^{-1}$, respectively. At 21 days after light quality treatment, growth characteristics and anthocyanins content of lettuce as affected by the peak wavelength of blue or red LED were significantly different. Among peak wavelengths treated in this stusy, R1 treatment (peak wavelength 634 nm) and R6 treatment (peak wavelength 659 nm) were effective for increasing leaf width, leaf area, shoot fresh weight, and photosynthetic rate of lettuce. B5 treatment (peak wavelength 450 nm) and B4 treatment (peak wavelength 446 nm) increased the anthocyanins concentration and chlorophyll content in lettuce leaves, respectively. Anthocyanins in lettuce leaves increased linearly with decreasing hue value of leaf color and with increasing SPAD value of lettuce leaves. From these results, it was concluded that the red LED with peak wavelengths of 634 nm and 659 nm and the blue LED with peak wavelengths of 450 nm can be used as potential light spectra for increasing the yield and anthocyanins accumulation of leafy vegetable.

  • The basic composition of Ni-Zn ferrite was $(Ni_{0.35}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.45})_{1.02}(Fe_2O_3)_{0.98}$ (group A) and $(Ni_{0.4}Cu_{0.2}Zn_{0.4})_{1.02}(Fe_2O_3)_{0.98}$(group B) with additional 0.1 mol% $CaCO_3$ and 0.03 mol% $V_2O_5$. For high permeability and acceleration of grain growth, $CaCO_3$ and $V_2O_5$ was added. The mixture of the law materials was calcinated at $600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours and then milled. The compacts of toroidal type were sintered at different temperature ($1,050^{\circ}C,\;1,070^{\circ}C,\;1,100^{\circ}C$) for 2 hours in air followed by an air cooling. Then, effects of various composition and sintering temperatures on the microstructure and physical properties such as density, resistivity, magnetic induction, coercive force, initial permeability, quality factor, and curie temperature of the Ni-Zn ferrite were investigated. The density of the Ni-Zn ferrite was $4.90{\sim}5.10g/cm^3$, resistivity revealed $10^8{\sim}10^{12}{\Omega}-cm$. The average grain size increased with the increase of sintering temperatures. The magnetic properties obtained from the aforementioned Ni-Zn ferrite specimens were 4,000 gauss for the maximum induction, 0.25 oersted for the coercive force, 2,997 for the initial permeability, 208 for the quality factor, and $202^{\circ}C$ for the curie temperature. The physical properties indicated that the specimens could be utilized as the core of microwave communication and high permeability deflection yoke of high permeability.

  • In HTS transformer with double pancake windings, the perpendicular component of leakage magnetic flux density ($B_{r}$ ) applied to HTS tapes of double pancake windings of HTS transformer acts as a cause to decrease the critical current in HTS tape. So, in this paper, HTS transformer with reciprocal arrangement winding is designed. And in order to investigate the$ B_{r}$ applied to HTS windings, the 2-D non-linear electromagnetic analysis of HTS transformer is performed by using the OPERA 2D. The maximum $B_{r}$ applied to winding of HTS transformer is 0.112 T and the characteristics of HTS transformer were also obtained. But in this type of winding arrangement, reciprocal arrangement, the generated ac-loss to the HTS windings is very high because of the applied $B_{r}$ to HTS windings. Therefore, in order to reduce the generated ac-loss to the HTS windings, the new design of HTS transformer with concentric winding arrangement is presented in this paper and the 2-D non-linear electromagnetic analysis and the ac-loss for HTS transformer with the concentric winding arrangement is also carried out.

  • This research is an analysis of the water vapor transport change Into the continent due to the global warming effect with the general circulation models. Water vapor transport change from ocean to land increases through the year due to CO2 doubling effect. In Eurasia, it indicates an increase about 170∼350${\times}$06 Mt/day the whole year. In Africa, it shows an decrease every month except November, especially there is the maximum decrease about -350${\times}$106 Mt/day during August-September. In other continents, excluding Eurasia and Africa, the change of water vapor transport vary with the month below $\pm$8.0${\times}$106 Mt/day with the unsystematic patterns. In Eurasia, the change of water vapor transport increases as a whole, but it decrease in desert areas which occupy a high area-ratio. Therefore, except desert areas, the amount of the growth in water vapor transport change concentrate on Asian monsoon area. As a result of monsoon strengthening, available water will grow considerably at the asian monsoon areas.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the optimum temperature and required time for soil sterilization when heated water was circulated through underground heating pipes in the greenhouse which solar heat was influenced to the temperature of soil during the summer day. Two different types of heating pipes were used for the experiment. One was a polyethylene pipe(XL) and the other was a corrugated ring shaped stainless steel pipe(STS). The results of the studies were summarized as follows; By measuring the thermal characteristics of the XL and STS, it was examined that the average temperature differences of the inlet and outlet were $8.5^{\circ}C$ and $13.3^{\circ}C$, the average flowrates were 15.3 L/min and 5.6 L/min, and the average radiation powers were 9.1 kW and 4.1 kW, respectively. As results of the regression analysis of underground temperatures, when average soil temperature was$35^{\circ}C$, an average water temperature was $80^{\circ}C$, and XL was used, it was estimated that the possible heat transfer distance, the required time for heat transfer and heat flux to reach the underground temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ were 300 mm, 230 hours, and $7.57kW/m^2$, respectively.

  • A lead slowing-down spectrometer (LSDS) system is a promising nondestructive assay technique that enables a quantitative measurement of the isotopic contents of major fissile isotopes in spent nuclear fuel and its pyroprocessing counterparts, such as $^{235}U$, $^{239}Pu$, $^{241}Pu$, and, potentially, minor actinides. The LSDS system currently under development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (Daejeon, Korea) is planned to utilize a high-flux ($>10^{12}n/cm^2{\cdot}s$) neutron source comprised of a high-energy (30 MeV)/high-current (~2 A) electron beam and a heavy metal target, which results in a very intense and complex radiation field for the facility, thus demanding structural shielding to guarantee the safety. Optimization of the structural shielding design was conducted using MCNPX for neutron dose rate evaluation of several representative hypothetical designs. In order to satisfy the construction cost and neutron attenuation capability of the facility, while simultaneously achieving the aimed dose rate limit (< $0.06{\mu}Sv/h$), a few shielding materials [high-density polyethylene (HDPE)eBorax, $B_4C$, and $Li_2CO_3$] were considered for the main neutron absorber layer, which is encapsulated within the double-sided concrete wall. The MCNP simulation indicated that HDPE-Borax is the most efficient among the aforementioned candidate materials, and the combined thickness of the shielding layers should exceed 100 cm to satisfy the dose limit on the outside surface of the shielding wall of the facility when limiting the thickness of the HDPE-Borax intermediate layer to below 5 cm. However, the shielding wall must include the instrumentation and installation holes for the LSDS system. The radiation leakage through the holes was substantially mitigated by adopting a zigzag-shape with concrete covers on both sides. The suggested optimized design of the shielding structure satisfies the dose rate limit and can be used for the construction of a facility in the near future.
