A Study on Decreasing Behavior of Strength & Elastic Parameters due to Water Infiltration in Rock Cores (II) (침투류에 의한 암석시료의 함수 저감거동 연구 (II))

  • Targeting 9 types of rocks, which have high frequency of excavation, the researcher has analyzed decreasing behaviors of elastic modulus due to water content. The elastic modulus decreasing behaviors have been classified into 5 steps by uniaxial compressive strength. The results indicate that all of 5 sedimentary rocks and andesite show single decreasing behavior and granite, rhyolite, and gneiss demonstrate another decreasing behavior. Moreover, sensitivity of water content in granite, rhyolite, gneiss is almost twice as fast as that of the other rocks and their residual value of elastic modulus is very low.

  • A study on strength decrease due to water contents through infiltration has been conducted with 9 rocks of high frequency in Korea. It has been proved that a strength decrease through infiltration has high dependence on rock strengths ranges while the species of rock have no impact. It has been found that the weaker the rocks are, the more sensitive the strength decreases are, and that water content of 0.5% corresponds to strength decrease of almost 50%. Another finding is that most rocks have a failure when water content is about one quarter~one half of its saturation. It has been shown that the weakening of rock strength due to water content results from leaching and the weakening of bonding strength of cementation materials.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop land use planning methods for carbon reduction of transportation and verify the effectiveness. Therefore, this study derived carbon reduction design elements, such as high-density suburb, mixed-use development, pedestrian network and community corridor, which can be applied in the land-use planning stage by examining previous research. The carbon reduction design elements utilized the actual site during the research process. The carbon reductions were estimated using VISUM. Consequently, when carbon reduction design is applied to the site, the carbon emissions declined in the year. As a result of estimating the carbon reduction, approximately 450.7tCO2/yr was reduced.

  • The current world wide interest in environmental issues has moved from energy conservation to $CO_2$emission reduction. Recently, according to the increase in demand for water resources, insufficient potable water circumstance is supposed, unless there are corresponding in crease in water conservation and water recycling. This study has attempted to analyze $CO_2$emission reduction by water saving strategies like installation water saving devices, rain water harvesting and grey water system. To do this, this research investigates applicable water conservative strategies by literature review and calculated total water saving. The results show that (1) firstly, the water usage and $CO_2$ emission could be reduced up to 44%, (2) $CO_2$ emission reduction by water saving devices and rainwater harvesting system is about 47.7%, and (3) water usage and $CO_2$ emission reduction by grey water system is about 66%. In the future, this paper will be utilized for water management from the early design stage to maintenance stage of water glutton building.

  • This study was the effect of inserting CO tube on $NO_x$ and CO emission characteristics in a compact combustion chamber. In detail, $NO_x$ and CO emission characteristics with changing of distance due to inserting CO tube between a burner and a main heat exchanger were investigated. For this study, the commercial program, FLUENT with GRI 2.11 detail reaction mechanism, was used for the numerical study and a commercial heat exchanger was tested for the experimental study. As results, when the CO tube was inserted between a burner and a main heat exchanger, it was verified that $NO_x$ and CO emissions was decreased simultaneously as CO tube was closed to a burner and the distance between CO tube and a main heat exchanger was increased.

  • Korea is the urgent need to diversify the bio-energy raw materials because we have narrow area of land cultivated plants and lack the bio-mass resources. Using a resource-rich the marine environment enclosed on three sides by the sea. Through bio-energy production-technical and carbon dioxide reduction measures which will be a very effective alternative. Sustainable development about algae bio-energize industry through SSaM-GG(Smart, Shared and Mutual-Green, Growth) is expected. Algae has high carbon dioxide absorption factor, extracting oil from algae is thirty times much more than sunflower.

  • This study is to estimate the viability of aerobic stabilization technology for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from landfills in Korea. In this study, methane emissions were estimated by applying Landfill gas estimation model (LandGEM) to Y landfill in Korea. By comparison of an anaerobic condition (baseline) and an aerobic condition, the amount of $CO_2eq$ savings was calculated. The $CO_2eq$ savings take place inside the landfilled waste during aeration due to the conversion of previously anaerobic biodegradation to aerobic processes, releasing mainly $CO_2$. It was demonstrated that 86.6% of the total GHG emissions occurring under anaerobic conditions could be reduced by aerobic stabilization technology. This means the aerobic stabilization technology could reduce environmental contamination through early stabilization and GHG emissions considerably at the same time. Therefore, the aerobic stabilization technology is one of the optimal technologies that could be employed to domestic landfill sites to achieve sustainable landfill.

  • This study was the effect of CO tube insert for NOx and CO emission characteristics in a compact combustion chamber. In detail, NOx and CO emission characteristics with changing of distance due to inserting the CO tube between the burner and the main heat exchanger were investigated. For this study, the commercial program, FLUENT, and the GRI 2.11 detail reaction mechanism were used for the numerical study and a simple model heat exchanger was tested for the experimental study. As results, when the CO tube was inserted between the burner and the main heat exchanger, it was verified the simultaneous NOx and CO reduction method because of increasing the residence time and decreasing the flame temperature.

Characteristics of Carbon Dioxide Reduction in the Gliding Arc Plasma Discharge (글라이딩 아크 플라즈마 방전에 의한 이산화탄소 저감 특성)

  • CCU (Carbon Capture & Utilization) has a potential technology for the reduction and usage of carbon dioxide which is greenhouse gas emitting from a fossil fuel buring. To decompose the carbon dioxide, a three phase gliding arc plasma-catalytic reactor was designed and manufactured. Experiments of carbon dioxide reduction was performed by varying the gas flow rate with feeding the $CO_2$ only as well as the input power, the catalyst type and steam supply with respect to the injection of the mixture of $CO_2$ and $CH_4$. The $CO_2$ decomposition rate was 7.9% and the energy efficiency was $0.0013L/min{\cdot}W$ at a $CO_2$ flow rate of 12 L/min only. Carbon monoxide and oxygen was generated in accordance with the destruction of carbon dioxide. When the injection ratio of $CH_4/CO_2$ reached 1.29, the $CO_2$ destruction and $CH_4$ conversion rates were 37.8% and 56.6% respectively at a power supply of 0.76 kW. During the installation of $NiO/Al_2O_3$ catalyst bed, the $CO_2$ destruction and $CH_4$ conversion rates were 11.5% and 9.9% respectively. The steam supply parameter do not have any significant effects on the carbon dioxide decomposition.
