Laser Beam Irradiation Strengthening for Weight Reduction of Automobile Bumper Beam (I) (자동차 범퍼빔 경량화를 위한 레이저 빔 조사 강화(I))

  • The CO$_2$ laser beam irradiation strengthening of 35kgf/mm$_2$ grade steel sheet is investigated to reduce the weight of bumper beam. The increase of tensile strength is dominated by the number of fully penetrated melting lines. The optimal laser irradiation pattern is obtained by 3-point bending test of hat-type specimens. Laser should be irradiated not only on the center specimen densely in the width direction, but also on the edge densely in the longitudinal direction. Local laser strengthening may be effective for the weight reduction of automobile bumper beam.

  • A new laser Doppler velocimeter employing a $CO_2$laser has been developed by using its optogalvanic effect. A change in the electric impedance of a discharge, induced by mixing of a returned wave with an originally existing wave inside the cavity, was employed to detect the Doppler frequency shift. A Doppler frequency shift as much as 60 KHz was detected, and also a good linear relationship between the velocity and the Doppler frequency shift was obtained.

  • Defocused CO$_2$ laser beam irradiation strengthening of 60kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ grade steel sheet was investigated to obtain the tensile strength similar to that of fully penetrated one by the focused beam. The melted line width by the defocused beam was 3∼4 times larger compared to that of the focused beam. However, the increase of tensile strength with 1 line irradiation by the defocused beam was similar to that of 2~3 lines by the focused beam. The increase(37.6%) of bending strength with 1 line by the defocused beam was higher than the increase(12.9%) of tensile strength. Also, the effect of cooling gas to strengthening was observed.

  • A simple laser Doppler velocimeter(LDV) using a $CO_2$ laser with its self-mixing effect has been developed. We measured the laser power which was modulated by Doppler frequency, when monochromatic laser light was focused to a moving target. The Doppler-shifted frequency was controlled by changing rotating speed of the turntable or the cosine of the angle between the direction of the laser beam and that of the rotating velocity.

  • Recently, the technology of surface treatment is being more important which affects the material cost reduction and substitution to the expensive material. The material used for the mechanical processing should have not only high intensity, but also strength toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. In order to increase the durability and have better quality of the parts using such kind of tooling material, various kinds of research of the surface hardening through many kinds of heat resources is being done and practically applied. In this study, the characteristics of hardening surface zone for high strength of the press die material through laser beam irradiation are researched. In this study, it is experimentally observed by the status of the surface morphology, tensile strength, the hardness distribution of the base metal and wear condition by the surface hardness pattern by the laser beam based on the process parameters of $CO_2$ laser by using SM45C and STD11 used for press tool. Through this research, the characteristics of surface hardened zone for high strength of the thin metal by laser beam irradiation is done.

  • 본 연구에서는 Al 금속 표면에 CW CO2 레이저 빔의 조사시 표면 온도의 증가에 따른 표면과 기체 분자의 계면사이에서 발생하는 다양한 물리적 현상을 측정하였다. 온도 증가에 따른 계면에서의 물리적 현상은 Al 표면에 힘의 변화를 초래하는데 이 힘의 변화를 시간에 따라 정확학게 측정하고 측정 한 힘을 온도와 연계하여 분석하면 계면의 상호작용에 의한 물리적 현상을 설명할 수 있다. 즉 레이저 와 표면의 상호 작용은 레이저 강도에 따라 기체와 표면사이의 에너지 및 선운동량의 전달, 표면 흡착 원자의 방출 및 표면물질의 증발 등으로 구분되는데, 이러한 상호 작용시 수반되는 힘의 변화를 이용하 여 Al 금속 표면에 대한 기체 종류별 Momentum Accommodation Coefficient (MAC)를 계산하였고, Al 표에 흡착된 원자의 종류,갯수 및 결합에너지를 구하였다.

Effect of C-Content for Ti Surface-Alloying Treatment on Steel by $CO_2$ Laser Beam (레이저 빔에 의한 철강재의 Ti 표면합금화에 미치는 C함량의 영향)

  • When $N_2$was used as shielding gas during the formation of Ti surface-alloyed layer by irradiation of $CO_2$laser beam on steel, TiN and F$e_2$Ti were formed regardness of carbon-content in steel. When Ti content was increased in low carbon-content steel, formation of martensitic structure was suppressed due to increase of critical cooling rate for martensitic transformation. In case of high-carbon steel, even though Ti content was about 1.5% in alloyed layer, hardness was increased by formation of martensitic structure instead of ferrite. In addition to that structure, hardness was incrreased further by precipitation of TiC in Ti alloyed-layer of high carbon-steel.

  • In this paper, using the value theoretically calculated to emit multidirectionally a beam coming into an optical fiber with diameter of $125{\mu}m$, we modeled and produced a cone-shaped structure at the distal end of the fiber. A numerical simulation was performed for an optical fiber tip in which all incident beams were totally reflected and emitted toward the side, as well as for an optical fiber tip from which the beams could be emitted forward and sideways simultaneously. We produced multidirectional-firing optical fiber tips based on the simulation result and model. Laser fabrication of the optical fiber was done by processing a cone-shaped structure at the distal end of an optical fiber with diameter of $125{\mu}m$ using a femtosecond pulsed laser and polishing the processed surface with a $CO_2$ laser. We also conducted an analysis to compare experimental and simulation results.
