A Study on the Synthesis of Alkoxides and Sialon (알콕사이드와 사이알론 합성에 관한 연구)

  • Fine powders of amorphous $Al_2O_3,\;SiO_2,\;Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ system were prepared by hydrolysis of solutions containing alkoxides, aluminium tri-isopropoxide and silicon tetra-ethoxide. High purity ultrafine ${\beta}-sialon$ powders were prepared by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of amorphous $Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ powders mixed with carbon black as a reducing agent. In the hydrolysis step the effect of the factors such as pH, reaction temperature and amount of water on the conversion rate of alkoxides to oxides was investigated. In the carbothermal reduction-nitridation the reaction path was assumed by the analysis of intermediates formed in the process of ${\beta}-sialon$ synthesis and the reaction kinetics of ${\beta}-sialon$ formation was considered.

Sintering Atmosphere Effect on the Grain Size and Phase Distribution of a Zirconia ($ZrO_2$ 의 입자크기과 상분포에 미치는 소결분위기 영향)

  • The effect of sintering atmosphere on the grain sizes and phase distributions in 3Y-ZrO2 and 8Y-ZrO2 was investigated O2 and N2 were used as sintering atmospheres. In the case of 3Y-ZrO2 the sintered density was higher in N2 than in O2 while in the case of 8Y-ZrO2 contrary results were obtained. The observation can be explained by the nitrogen solubility into the zirconia lattice. That is nitrogen gas can behave as a diffusive gas contrary to the behavior in other oxides depending on the amount of Y2O3. In 3Y-ZrO2 tetragonal phase was retained at room temperature irrespective of sintering atmospheres. Grain sizes of two specimens were below 2㎛ and larger in O2 thin in N2 Under a given stress the transformability of tetragonal phase into monoclinic phase was higher in O2 than N2. The results are discussed on the basis of an effect of the grain size and non-transformable ttragonal(t') phase.

  • The mechanical properties and microstructure of ceramics of the system Al2O3-ZrO2-Y2O3 sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 2h after powder preparation by the precipitation method from Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were investigated. The Al2O3-ZrO2-Y2O3 ceramics sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 2h after mixing alpha-Al2O3 and ZrO2-Y2O3 powders, both were separately precipitated and calcined, were found to have the relative density higher than 97.5% so that the strengthening and toughening mechanisms could be explained mainly as the stress-induced phase transformation. On the other hand, the sintered bodies prepared by co-precipitating the three starting materials were measured to have the relative density lower than 85% so that the degradation of strength were observed above 15 vol% ZrO2 contents due to the high porosity by which the effect of stress-induced phase transformation was assumed to be depressed.

  • In the present study an attempt was made to synthesize the $Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ glass in which atomic ratio is Al:Si=1:1 by sol-gel process. And at such a low temperature as 55$0^{\circ}C$ clear amorphous gel derived glass with Si-O-Al bonding was obtained. $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$ and $Al(NO_3)_3$.$9H_2O$ were used as the precursor and among the mutual solvents only n-butanol gave good results for the synthesis of the gel derived glass. Partial hydrolysis of TEOS with one-fold mol of $H_2O$ prior to the reaction with aluminum nitrate gave the better results., Total oxide content to the total reactants by weight was affective to the results.

  • Sulfurization of rare-earth oxides R203 (R=Nd, Eu) using sulfurizing reagents, such as $H_2S$ and $SC_2$was examined for the sulfide magnetic separation of spent fuel. $EU_2O_3$was found to react with H$_3$S gas forming the mixture of $EU_2O_2S$ and EuS at 500 oC, while EuS was formed by $SC_2$ at 800 oC. In the case of the mixture of $R_2O_3$and $UO_2$, EuS and $ND_3S_4$ were formed as well as $EU_2O_2S$ and $Nd_2O_2S$ at 500oC in $H_2S$, though $UO_2$ remained unreacted.

Effect of $P_2O_5$ on the Phase Separation of $PbO-B_2O_3$ Glasses ($PbO-B_2O_3$ 계 유리의 상분리에 미치는 $P_2O_5$의 영향)

  • Various amount of $P_2O_5$ were added to $PbO-B_2O_3$ binary glass system to investigate its effect on the phase separation and physical properties of the glass. Experiments such as infrared spectroscopy scanning electron microscopy thermal expansion softening point and microhardnesses were done. Phase separation with $B_2O_3$ rich phase matrix and PbO rich phase droplet was observed for the glasses con-taining less than 10m/o of PbO while the opposite morphology of phase separation for the glasses containing more than 11m/o of PbO. By adding increasing amount of $P_2O_5$ their phase separation region was extended to the glass containing more than 20m/o of PbO. These effects can be interpreted in terms of the inoic field strength difference of each ions in the glasses. The abrupt changes of physical properties such as softening point thermal expansion and microhardness were observed for the glass with around 10m/o of PbO in this system. These changes are by the matrix composition change from TEX>$B_2O_3$ rich phase to PbO rich phase depending on PbO concentration.

  • Inorganic pigments were prepared from $Al_2O_3$, CoO, $Cr_2O_3$, ZnO, $SrO_2$ and Kaolin. The pigment was prepared through the processes of mixing and crushing of the raw materials, sintering, milling and drying. The color of the pigments was changed from blue to green as $Cr_2O_3$ contents in the pigment increased. The color became brighter irrespective of the pigment composition as pigment particle size became smaller. Maximum sintering temperature was the most suitable at around $1,250^{\circ}C$. In the test of compatability between the pigment and glaze, the color became close to green as $Cr_2O_3$ contents in the pigment increased, and became close to blue as CoO contents increased.

  • The preparation and electrical conductivity of $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$ are investigated as a function of $Na_2O$ content from the-oretical composition of $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$ to that of $\beta$"-$Al_2O_3$. $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$ $\beta$"$Al_2O_3$$\alpha$-Al2O3 and ${\gamma}$-NaAlO2 phases appear in the calcined powder at 125$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The majoity phase is $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$ in sintered specimens at 155$0^{\circ}C$ and 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 30 mins respectively and ${\gamma}$-4NaAlO_2$ phase also exists when Na2O content is over 10.39w/o ${\gamma}$-4NaAlO_2$ phase does not affect the grain growth of $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$ in sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ but acts as a reactive liquid for the abnormal grain growth of $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$in sintering at 1$650^{\circ}C$ The electrical conduction of $\beta$-$Al_2O_3$is predominated by 4Na^+$ ion. Contribution of ionic con-ductivity to total conductivity is gradually decreased with increasing temperature at given oxygen pressure and to -tal conductivity is increased by positive hole due to interstitial oxygen with increasing oxygen pressure.

  • The Yttria Partially Stabilized Zirconia powder was prepared by spontaneous precipitation method using $ZrOCl_2{\cdot}8H_O-YCl_33{\cdot}6H_2O$ solution as a starting materials. The optimal experimental conditions such as concentration and pH of starting solutions, the amounts of stabilizer $Y_2O_3$ used, and sintered temperature were carefully studied. The best condition for synthesizing $ZrO_2$ was experimentally selected and applied throughout this study for the preparation of the 3 mole% $Y_2O_3$ partially stabilized zirconia, 3YSZ. The physical properties of 3YSZ was examined by XRD, Raman, DT A, and SEM. The structural transition from pure monoclinic high temperature $ZrO_2$ to tetragonal room temperature 3YSZ was made possible by the added amount of $Y_2O_3$ in the $ZrO_2+Y_2O_3$ system. All Raman Spectrum band appeared in the lower wave numbers rather than in higher wave numbers as structure changes from monoclinic to tetragonal.

Effects of Additives on the Characteristics of Sodium Borosilicate Thin Film Fabricated by AFD Method (첨가제가 AFD법에 의해 제조된 광소자용 Sodium Borosilicate 박막의 물성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of $AI_{2}$$O_{3}$ and the ratio of $Na_2O/B_2O_3$ on the phase separation and optical properties of sodium borosilicate glass film fabricated by AFD(Aerosol Flame Deposition) were investigated. When AI,O, of 6wt% was added to $66SiO_2-27B_2O_3-7Na_2O$ the clear glass film without any crystallization was produced under air-quenching condition after consolidation. As the amount of $AI_{2}$$O_{3}$ increased from 1.5 to 6.0 wt% the refractive index linearly increased from 1.4610 to 1.4701, and the difference of TE and TM mode causing by residual stress in film increased gradually. However, the difference of TE and TM mode to reveal birefringence could be minimized by annealing below the glass transition temperature after consolidation and air quenching. On the other hand. as the ratio of $Na_2O/B_2O_3$ increased the refractive index and birefringence of glass film tended to increase, but the measurement of their values were not available at over the critical ratio of $Na_2O/B_2O_3$, because of the cloudiness due to crystallization. The phase separation was greatly accelerated with increasing the ratio of $Na_2O/B_2O_3$.
