Fabrication of Al2O3/Fe-Ni Nanocomposites by Pressureless Sintering and their Magnetic Properties (상압소결에 의한 Al2O3/Fe-Ni 나노복합재료의 제조 및 자기적 특징)

  • The powder mixture in which Fe-Ni alloy particles of 20 nm were homogeneously dispersed on $Al_2O_3$ particle surfaces was prepared by hydrogen reduction of $Al_2O_3$ and metal oxide powders. $Al_2O_3$/Fe-Ni nanocomposites fabricated by pressureless sintering were only composed of $Al_2O_3$ and ${gamma}$-Fe-Ni phases and achieved over 98% of the theoretical density at the sintering temperature above $1350^{\circ}C$. The highest strength and toughness of the composites were 574 MPa and 3.9 MP$a{\cdot}m1/2$, respectively. These values were about 20% higher than these of monolithic $Al_2O_3$ sintered at the same conditions. Nanocomposites showed ferromagnetic properties and coercive force was increased with decrease of the average particle size of dispersions.

  • The crystallization of metastable "orthorhombic" phase from the glass in the system of Na $AlSi_3O_8-CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ is studied. These crystals are crystallized in the range of composition from $Ab_80An_20$ to An100. The symmetry of these crystals show orthorhombic as a possible space group P22121. Two probable twin models are proposed. proposed.

Effects of Solvent Mixtures on Dispersion and Rheology of Alumina/zirconia Tape Casting Slurries (알루미나/지르코니아 테이프 케스팅 슬러리의 분산과 레올로지에 미치는 용매혼합의 영향)

  • The effects of methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK)/ethanol(EtOH) solvent mixtures on the dispension, particle size distribution and rheology of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ nonaqueous suspensions were investigated by measuring sedimentation density and viscosity. The sedimentation density of $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ particles increased in MIBK-rich($\geq$60 vol%) solvents with 'Hypermer' KD-1 as a dispersant. The ball-milled suspensions in 80MIBK/20EtOH(vol%) solvent exhibited the narrow and unimodal particle size distribution. Although all Suspensions exhibited the Pseduo-Plastic flow(Shear thinning) the shear thinning behavior was somewhat different depending on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ and MIBK/EtOH. Under a given shear rate( <300 s$^{-1}$ for $Al_2$O$_3$; <3000 s$^{-1}$ for ZrO$_2$) the strongest shear thinning appeared in the $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ suspensions with pure MIBK solvent. The shear thinning was nearly independable on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ in case of using the identical solvent(80MIBK/20EtOH, vol%).

Microstructures and Densification Behaviors of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2(ZTA)$ Composites Fabricated by a Surface-induced Coating (표면-유기 코팅에 의해 합성한 $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2(ZTA)$ 복합체의 미세구조와 소결거동)

  • Al2O3-ZrO2(ZTA) composites were fabricated by a surface-induced coating of the precursor for the ZrO2 phase on the kinetically stable colloid particles of Al2O3. The fabricated composites were characterized by a uniform spatial distribution of the dispersed ZrO2 phase and by the absence of large ZrO2 grains throughout the Al2O3 matrix. The fracture toughness (KIC) and the bending strength of ZTA composites sintered at 1$600^{\circ}C$, respectively, were 5.6 MPa.m1/2 (for 20 wt% ZrO2) and 600 MPa (for 15wt% ZrO2). The fraction of tetragonal ZrO2 phase decreases as the total content of ZrO2, suggesting that both the stress-induced tlongrightarrowm transformation and the microcrack nucleation contribute to the toughening of the ZTA composites fabricated by the surface-induced coating.

  • Reforming of propane by carbon dioxide using NiO/${\gamma}$-$A1_2O_3$ was carried out in a pulse or continuous kid bed reactor. NiO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ showed higher dissociation ability of $CO_2$ than NiO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$, and the former exhibited higher conversion of propane than the latter. The presence of oxygen in the reaction mixture of propane and $CO_2$ increased the conversion of propane and reduced the amount of carbon deposit on the catalyst surface. Mechanical mixture catalyst of NiO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ and $Ga_2O_3$ showed higher stability to deactivation than NiO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ itself. The synergistic effect between NiO/${\gamma}$-$Al_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ was also observed in this study.

  • Al2O3 powders with particle sizes of 0.35 ㎛, 0.5 ㎛, 1.5 ㎛, and 2.5 ㎛ are deposited onto glass and Cu substrates using the aerosol deposition (AD) process. The deposition characteristics of Al2O3 films using those four types of Al2O3 powders are investigated to determine the influence of the particle size on the films. To observe detailed micro-structures of the films, the cross-section and surface morphology are observed. Then, the crystalline size and internal strain are calculated from X-ray diffraction peaks in order to confirm the hammering effect as well as the micro-strain during the AD deposition. From the above results, deposition mechanisms related to the particle size are studied. The results of this study indicate the optimal particle size and formation mechanisms for dense Al2O3 film with a smooth surface roughness as well as for a porous Al2O3 film with a rough surface roughness.

Low Temperature Sintering and Microwave Dielectric Properties of Alumina-Silicate/Zinc Borosilicate Glass Composites (Alumina-silicate/zinc borosilicate glass 복합체의 저온 소결 및 유전 특성)

  • The low temperature sintering and the dielectric properties of $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$-zinc borosilicate glass composites were investigated in the view of the application for LTCC. When the sintering was conducted at $900^{\circ}C$ $ZnAl_2O_4$ and $ZnB_2O_4$ compounds formed at the $Al_2O_3$-rich and the $SiO_2$-rich compositions, respectively. The reaction between ZBS glass and $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ caused the formation of these compounds. The $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$ ratio affected the dielectric properties. The excellent dielectric properties, i.e., Q$\times$f value= 40,000 GHz and ${\varepsilon}_r$=4.5, were obtained in the $Al_2O_3/SiO_2$-ZBS glass system and fabricated the LTCC substrate materials.

  • In the present study an attempt was made to synthesize the $Al_2O_3$.$2SiO_2$ glass in which atomic ratio is Al:Si=1:1 by sol-gel process. And at such a low temperature as 55$0^{\circ}C$ clear amorphous gel derived glass with Si-O-Al bonding was obtained. $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$ and $Al(NO_3)_3$.$9H_2O$ were used as the precursor and among the mutual solvents only n-butanol gave good results for the synthesis of the gel derived glass. Partial hydrolysis of TEOS with one-fold mol of $H_2O$ prior to the reaction with aluminum nitrate gave the better results., Total oxide content to the total reactants by weight was affective to the results.

  • The effect of $ZrO_2$ dispersed phase on the mechanical properties in $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system has been studied. There are both metastable tetragonal phase and stable monoclinic phase of $ZrO_2$particles diespersed in Al2O3 matrix at room temperature. Metastable tetragonal $ZrO_2$ changes to the stable monoclinic structure within the stress field of the crack. And microcracks are formed by the expansion of $ZrO_2$during the tetragonal-monoclinic transformation on cooling. Therefore stress-induced phase transformation and inclusion-induced microcracking contribute to the mec-hanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system. Sintered composites containing 10m/o $ZrO_2$ yield KiC values of 6.5MN/$m^{3/2}$ much greater than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ This increase results from microcrack extension and stress-induced phase transformation absor-bing energy by crack propagation. Flexural strength of composites is decreased considerably in comparison with pure $Al_2O_3$ This decrease results from microcrack as a crack former and higher porosity than pure $Al_2O_3$.

  • The electrical loss of the photo-generated carriers is dominated by the recombination at the metal- semiconductor interface. In order to enhance the performance of the solar cells, many studies have been performed on the surface treatment with passivation layer like SiN, SiO2, Al2O3, and a-Si:H. In this work, Al2O3 thin films were investigated to reduce recombination at surface. The Al2O3 thin films have two advantages, such as good passivation properties and back surface field (BSF) effect at rear surface. It is usually deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. However, ALD process is a very expensive process and it has rather low deposition rate. In this study, the ICP-assisted reactive magnetron sputtering method was used to deposit Al2O3 thin films. For optimization of the properties of the Al2O3 thin film, various fabrication conditions were controlled, such as ICP RF power, substrate bias voltage and deposition temperature, and argon to oxygen ratio. Chemical states and atomic concentration ratio were analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In order to investigate the electrical properties, Al/(Al2O3 or SiO2,/Al2O3)/Si (MIS) devices were fabricated and characterized using the C-V measurement technique (HP 4284A). The detailed characteristics of the Al2O3 passivation thin films manufactured by ICP-assisted reactive magnetron sputtering technique will be shown and discussed.
