Preparation of $ZrO_2/Al_2O_3-Mullite$ Composites Using the Silica Sol Infiltration Method (실리카 졸 침투법을 이용한 $ZrO_2/Al_2O_3-Mullite$ 복합체의 제조)

  • ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were prepared by infiltration of the silica sol to the porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies. The porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies for infiltration were fabricated using ZrO2 (20wt%)/Al2O3 composite powders synthesized by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method. The preparation of silica sols was conducted by the hydrolysis-peptization of an alcoholic TEOS solution. When ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite and ZrO2/Al2O3 composites were sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs, both of them showed an excellent sinterability. As the amount of mullite added in the composites increased, the ratio of the tetragonal phase of zirconia to the monoclinic phase at the room temperature became higher. It was known that values of the fracture toughness of the ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were about 5.48 MPa.m1/2 much larger than that of the ZrO2/Al2O3 system.

  • 본 연구는 습식법으로 수산화 알루미늄과 티타니아를 출발물질로 하여 $Al_2$O$_3$-TiO$_2$복합분체를 제조하였으며, 2 mol의 Al(OH)$_3$분말에 대하여 TiO$_2$분말량을 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 wt%로 첨가하여 $Al_2$O$_3$-TiO$_2$복합분체의 특성을 조사하였다. 제조된 $Al_2$O$_3$-TiO$_2$계 복합분체는 $700^{\circ}C$~140$0^{\circ}C$까지 하소하여 XRD 분석을 한 결과 100$0^{\circ}C$까지는 TiO$_2$(rutile)상과 η-Al$_2$O$_3$상이 공존하다가 110$0^{\circ}C$부터 130$0^{\circ}C$까지는 η-Al$_2$O$_3$에서 $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$로의 상전이가 일어나서 $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$상과 TiO$_2$(rutile)상이 나타났으며 하소온도 140$0^{\circ}C$, TiO$_2$첨가량이 5 wt%일 때부터 $Al_2$TiO$_{5}$가 생성되기 시작하였다. TiO$_2$첨가량에 따른 비표면적값은 첨가량이 7 wt%까지는 감소하였으나 그 이상 첨가시 증가하였다. 입도분석 결과 평균입경은 15.74~23.21$mu extrm{m}$로서 TiO$_2$첨가량이 3 wt%일 때 가장 작은 값을 가졌으며 TiO$_2$첨가량은 5 wt% 이상부터 점차 감소하였다.

  • In this paper, we propose the formation of an $Al_2O_3$ pre-layer using a protective Si-oxide layer and Al layer. Deposition of a thin film layer of aluminum onto a Si surface covered with a thin Si-oxide layer and annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ led to the growth of epitaxial $Al_2O_3$ layer on Si(111). And ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer was grown on the $Al_2O_3$ per-layer. Etching of the Si substrate by $N_2O$ gas could be avoided in the initial growth stage by the $Al_2O_3$ pre-layer. It was confirmed that the $Al_2O_3$ pre-layer was effective in improving the surface morphology of the very thin ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ films.

  • In this study, effects of oxide additives on mechanical properties and microstructure of A1N and A1N polytype ceramics were investigated. Fine A1N powder was synthesized by nitriding alumiuim hydroxide prepared from Al-isopropoxide, at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 10h in N2 atmosphere. By adding 3w/o Y2O3, 0.56w/o CaO, and 10w/o SiO2 to AlN powder, AlN and AlN polytype ceramics were prepared by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa at 1800$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. AlN ceramics with no additives formed considerable amount of AlON phase, while AlN ceramics doped with Y2O3 or CaO decreased AlON phase and formed Y-Al or Ca-Al oxide compound. AlN+10w/o SiO2(+3w/o Y2O3) composition produced AlON and AlN polytype compound having 21R as a major phase. Room temperature flexural strength of AlN ceramics with no additive was 246MPa, and room temperature flexural strength and critical temperature difference by thermal shock(ΔTc) of AlN ceramics dooped with Y2O3 or CaO were 532MPa/340$^{\circ}C$ and 423MPa/300$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Y2O3 and CaO used as sintering agent played roles of densification and oxygen removal of AlN ceramics, and affected grain growth/grain morphologies of AlN ceramics.

  • The fabrication of Al2O3/Al composite by pressureless infiltration was investigated by the change of Mg and Si content in Al alloy infiltration process and infiltration atmosphere. The effect of alloying elements infiltration atmosphere and interfacial reactants between Al alloy matrix and Al2O3 particles were in-vestigated in terms of bendingstrength and harness test,. The fabrication of Al2O3/Al composite by the vestigated in terms of bending strength and hardness test. The fabrication of Al2O3/Al composite by the pressureless infiltration was done in nitrogen atmosphere with Mg in Al alloy. It was successfully fabricated at $700^{\circ}C$ according to Mg contents in Al alloy and infiltration condition. Because Mg in the Al alloy and ni-trogen atmosphere of infiltratio condition produced Mg-N compound(Mg3N2) it decreased the wetting an-gle between molten Al alloy and Al2O3 particles by coating on surface of Al2O3 particles. The fracture strength of Al2O3/Al-Mg composite was 800MPa and Al2O3/Al-Si-Mg composite was 400MPa. Si in Al alloy decreased the interfacial strength between Al alloy matrix and Al2O3 particles.

  • Self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) technique was used to synthesize the spinel phase of $MgAl_2O_4$ from MgO and Al powder. Thermit reaction products of MgO and Al, The reaction products were heat treated at the temperature $800^{\circ}C$ preheating. Processing factors such as DTA/TG, combustium product and maxium temperature, synthesis of MgO and Al from "$MgO+2Al+3/2O_2$\rightarrow$MgAl_2O_4$". An activation energy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$)-264.8 kcal/mol and reaction of maxium temperature 5634 K was calculated to form a $MgAl_2O_4$ spinel from unreacted materials. Pellet were increased volume 6% after thermit reaction. reaction.

Analysis of Toughening Mechanism of Ceramic Composites by Acoustic Emission (AE(Acoustic Emission)에 의한 세라믹 복합재료의 고인성화 기구 분석)

  • Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite containing equiaxed grains and Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite containing elongated grains were fabricated using Al2O3-Y2O3 composition and Al2O3-La2O3 composition, respectively, by hot-pressing. In order to investigate the influence of microstructural control of second phase on toughening effect of toughened ceramic composites, AE (acoustic emission) measurements have been coupled with fracture toughness experiments(SENB and SEPB method). A separation of the fracture toughness and analysis of toughening mechanism was possible using the AE technique. The fracture toughness of hot-pressed materials was estimated to be 3.2 MPam0.5 for monolithic alumina, 4.7 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite and 6.2 MPam0.5 for Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite. In monolithic Al2O3, toughening does not occur as a result of either microcracking or grain bridging, whereas, composites exhibit toughening effects by both microcracking in the frontal zone and gain bridging in the wake zone, resulting in an improvement of fracture toughness as compared with monolithic Al2O3. The fracture toughness of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite is higher than that of Al2O3/20 vol%YAG composite. It may be attributed to the elongated microstructure of Al2O3/20 vol%LaAl11O18 composite, resulting relatively greater bridging effect.

  • Al2O3/(5~20vol%)LaAl11O18 composites in which the second phase was dispersed with a elongated grain shape were fabricated using Al2O3 and La2O3 composition by hot-pressing. In order investigate the in-fluence of LaAl11O18 on the toughening of LaAl11O18 on the toughening of Al2O3 matrix composites AE(acoustic emission) analysis was con-ducted together with an evaluation of fracture toughness using of SEPB technique. The degree of AE events occurred in composites were more than those in monolithic alumina. The occurrences of AE event increased with increasing the amount of LaAl11O18 phase in the Al2O3/LaAl11O18 composite is two times higher compared to monolithic alu-mina. The main toughening mechanism was attributed to the bridging of LaAl11O18 grains at tip of pro-pagating crack.

Synthesis of AlN-SiO2-Al2O3 System (AlN-SiO2-Al2O3계로부터 AlN-Polytypes의 제조)

  • In order to synthesize AlN-polytypes from AlN-SiO2-Al2O3 system, composition A (AlN/SiO2/Al2O3=1/0.3/0.05, mole ratio) and composition B(AlN-SiO2-Al2O3=1/0.2/0.05, mole ratio) were used. AlN-polytypes were produced by nitriding the mixture at 175$0^{\circ}C$~190$0^{\circ}C$ under N2 atmosphere. For lower reaction temperature, 15R phase was produced and in the case of higher reaction temperature, AlN phase was only produced. As each composition was heated at 185$0^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere, produced main phases were 15R phase for composition A and 21R phase for composition B respectively. The fracture surfaces of produced reactants showed porous skeleton structure.

  • Mechanical properties of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites fabricated by the reaction squeeze casting were compared with those of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Ai composites. Al-Ni intermetallic compounds ($10{\sim}20 {\mu}m$) formed by the reaction between nickel powder and molten aluminum were uniformly distributed in the Al matrix. These intermetallic compounds were identified as $Al_3Ni$ using X-ray diffraction analysis and they resulted in beneficial effects on room and high temperature strength and wear resistance. Microhardness values of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composite were greater by about 100Hv than those of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composite. Wear resistance of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites was superior to that of ($15%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2$)/Al composites regardless of the applied load. While tensile and yield strength of ($10%Al_2O_3{\cdot}SiO_2+5%Ni$)/Al hybrid composites were greater at room temperature and $300^{\circ}C$, strength drop at high temperature was much smaller in hybrid composites.
