Properties of ${\beta}$-SIC TiB$_2$ Electroconductive Ceramic Composites Densified by Liquid-Phase Sintering(Ⅱ) (液狀 燒結에 의한 ${\beta}$-SIC TiB$_2$系 導電性 複合體의 特性(Ⅱ))

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$,/TEX> electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as function as functions of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$,/TEX>, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase. The relative density and the mechanical properties of composites were increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents in pressureless annealing method because YAG of reaction between $Al_2O_3$ was increased. The flexural strength showed the highest value of 458.9 MPa for composites added with 4 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives in pressed annealing method at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection, crack bridging, phase transition and YAG of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 7.1 MPa ${\cdot}\;m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 12 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives in pressureless annealing method at room temperature. The electrical resistivity and the resistance temperature coefficient showed the lowest value of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}\;{\Omega}\;{\cdot}\;cm(25\'^{\circ}C}$ and $3.0{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ for composite added with 12 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives in pressureless annealing method at room temperature, respectively. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature ranges from 25 $^{\circ}C$ to 700 $^{\circ}C$.

  • Five Al2O3/SiC/metal composites with four different particle sizes of green SiC abrasive grains are grown by the directed oxidation of an commercially available Al-alloy. Oxidation was conducted in air at 100$0^{\circ}C$, 96 hours long. Slip casted SiC-fillers were placed on the alloy or SiC powder deposited up to the required layer thickness. Their microstructures are described and measurements of density, elastic constants, frexural strength, fracture toughness and work of fracture are reported. The results are compared with those of commercial dense sintered Al2O3. The properties of produced materials have a strong relationship to not only the properties of Al2O3, SiC, Al and Si but also to the phase share and phase distribution. The composite materials are dense (0.5% porosity), tough (KIC = 3.4~6.4 MPa{{{{ SQRT { m} }}), strong ({{{{ sigma }}B = 170~345 MPa) and reasonably shrinkage free producible. The reinforcements is attained mainly through the plastic deformation of ductile metal phase.

  • The effect of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives on fracture toughness of ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$ composites by hot-pressed sintering was investigated. The ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$ ceramic composites were hot-press sintered and pressureless-annealed by adding 16, 20, 24 wt% ${\beta}-SiC-TiB_2$(6:4 wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at low temperature(1800 $^{\circ}C$) for 4 h. Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed mostly of ${\alpha}$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$). The relative density was over 95-88 % of the theoretical density, and the porosity increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents because of the increasing tendency of pore formation. The fracture toughness showed the highest value of 5.88 MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 20 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of $5.22{\times}10^{-4}\;{\Omega}\;{\cdot}\;cm$ for composite added with 20 wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature, and was all positive temperature coefficeint resistance(PTCR) against temperature up to 900 $^{\circ}C$.

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta$-SiC+39vol. %ZrB2 electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated by adding 1, 2, 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3(6:4wt%) of the liquid forming additives. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta-SiC$ and ZrB2. The relative density is over 90.8% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing Al2O3+Y2O3 contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed $\alpha-SiC(6H, 4H)$, ZrB2 and $\beta-SiC$(15R). Flexural srength showed the highest of 315.5MPa for composites added with 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives as room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 5.5MPa.m1/2 and 5.3MPa.m1/2 for composites added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively at room temperature. The area fraction of the elongated SiC grain in the etched surface of sample showed 65% and 65.1% for composite added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively. The electrical resistivity at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites wall all positive temperature coefficient(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

Thermal Shock Behavior of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ Ceramics Prepared by a Precipitation Method (침전법으로 제조한 $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$계 세라믹스의 열충격 거동)

  • A precipitation method, one of the most effective liquid phase reaction methods, was adopted in order to prepare high-tech Al2O3/ZrO2 composite ceramics, and the effects of stress-induced phase transformation of ZrO2 on thermal shock behavior of Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramics were investigated. Al2(SO4)3.18H2O, ZrOCl2.8H2O and YCl3.6H2O were used as starting materials and NH4OH as a precipitation agent. Metal hydroxides were obtained by single precipitation(process A) and co-precipitation(process B) method at the condition of pH=7, and the composition of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites was fixed as Al2O3-15v/o ZrO2(+3m/o Y2O3). Critical temperature difference showing rapid strength degradation by thermal shock showed higher value in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites(process A : 20$0^{\circ}C$, process B : 215$^{\circ}C$) than in Al2O3(175$^{\circ}C$). The improvement of thermal shock property for Al2O3/ZrO2 composites was mainly due to the increase of strength at room temperature by adding ZrO2. The strength degradation was more severe for the sample with higher strength at room temperature. Crack initiation energies by thermal shock showed higher values in Al2O3/ZrO2 composites than in Al2O3 ceramics due to increase of fracture toughness by ZrO2.

Electrical Resistivity of the $\beta-SiC+39vol.%TiB_2$ Composites ($\beta-SiC+39vol.%TiB_2$ 복합체의 전기저항률)

  • The composites were fabricated 61 vol% $\beta$-SiC and $39vol%TiB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 8, 12, 16wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ by hot pressing at $1730^{\circ}C$ and subsequent pressed annealing and pressureless annealing at $1750^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours to form YAG. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, and YAG($Al_5Y_3O_{12}$) crystal phase. The relative density of composites were increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. The fracture toughness showed the highest value of $7.77MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity and the resistance temperature coefficient showed the lowest of $7.3{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ and $3.8{\times}10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$, respectively, for composite added with 12wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.

Strength Safety Evaluation of Composite Pressure Container for Hydrogen Fuel Tanks (수소연료탱크용 복합소재 압력용기에 관한 강도안전성 평가연구)

  • This paper presents a strength safety evaluation of composite pressure container for hydrogen fuel tanks with a storage capacity of 104 liter and 70MPa pressure. The carbon fiber composite container is manufactured by an aluminum liner of Al6061-T6 and composite multi-layers of hoop winding layer in circumferential direction, $12^{\circ}C$ inclined winding layer and $70^{\circ}C$winding layer in helical direction respectively. The FEM results on the strength safety of composite fuel tanks were evaluated with a criterion of design safety of US DOT-CFFC and KS B ISO 11119-2 codes. The FEM computed results indicate that the proposed design model of 104 liter composite container is safe based on two strength safety codes. But, the computed results of carbon fiber fuel tanks based on US DOT-CFFC code is safer compared with that of KS B ISO 11119-2. Thus the hydrogen gas pressure container of 70MPa may be evaluated and designed by US DOT-CFFC code for more strength safety.

  • A wear behavior of electroless (Ni-P-X, X: SiC, $Al_2O_3$, Diamond) composite coating layers, formed under various conditions on commerical grade low carbon steel, has been investigated using Taber abrasion tester and scanning electron microscope. Several factors, which are type of particles, co-deposited content, particle size, distribution of particles and heat-treatment, influenced the wear resistance. The wear resistance of the composited coating layers after heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was increased 70 times with diamond, 15 times with SiC and 8 times with $Al_2O_3$, compared with the electroless nickel plating layer without heat-treatment.

  • Most previous researches for the hybrid composite materials such as FRMLs(Al/AFRP, Al/GFRP) have evaluated the fatigue delamination behavior using the traditional fracture mechanism. However, most previous researches have not generally been firmed yet. Because delamination growth behavior in hybrid composite should be consider delamination growth rate, $dA_D$/da using the delamination shape factors, fs instead of traditional fracture mechanic parameters. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between delamination shape factor, fs and delamination growth rate, $dA_D$ . And a propose parameter on the delamination aspect ratio, b/a. The details of the study are as follow : 1) Relationship between crack length, a and delamination width,b. 2) Relationship between delamination aspect ration, b/a and delamination area rate,($(A_D)_{N}(A_D)_{ALL}$. 3) Variation of delamination growth rate, $dA_D/da$ was attendant on delamination shape factors, $fs_1$, $fs_2$, $fs_3$. The test results indicated the delamination growth rate depends on delamination shape factors.
