Various heat-treatments were conducted to Ti-48.1at%Al and Ti-48.3at%Al-1.2at%Mn alloys casted by plasma arc melting system. Mechanical properties, microstructure and high temperature oxidizing behaviors of as-casted and heat-treatment alloys were investigated. Ti-48.1Al and Ti-48.3Al-1.2Mn alloys were decreased in strength according to increased of heattreatment temperature. Oxidizing weight gain of Ti-48.1Al alloy which conducted at $1273^{\circ}K$ was linearly increased. In case of adding Mn to alloy, there was no rapid increase of oxidizing weight gain during early time.
The monolithic dry gels of the Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system were prepared by the sol-gel technique using metal alkoxides as starting materials to obtain monolithic glass-ceramics at low temperature without melting. Activation energy for the crystal growth of the gel with 6.05% TiO2, nucleating ageng, for the preparation of Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system glass-ceramic was 101.14kcal/mol. As a result of the analysis of DTA & XRD, it was confirmed that the crytallization of Li2O-Al2O3-TiO2-SiO2 system glass-ceramic was the most efficient when 6.05% TiO2, nucleating agent, was added. $\beta$-eucryptite solid solution crystals and $\beta$-spodumene solid solution crystals were detected in the sample heat treated above 85$0^{\circ}C$. The sintered gel heat treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ had the specific surface area of 185$m^2$/g, the pore volume of 0.19cc/g and the average pore radius of 20.8$\AA$. This shows that the sintered gel is also comparatively porous material. In temperature range of 25~85$0^{\circ}C$ thermal expansion coefficient of the specimen which was crystallized for 10hrs at 85$0^{\circ}C$ was 6.7$\times$10-7/$^{\circ}C$, which indicated that the crystallized specimen was turned out to be the glass-ceramic with low thermal expansion.
The effects of the annealing atmospheres(O2, N2) and sintering additives that Bi2O3 is a major composition on the microwave dielectric and sintering propertie of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 system were investigated. The annealing atmospheres and the increase of annealing time after sintering did not affect the relative dielectric constant($\varepsilon$r) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau$f) of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 system. However, the Q.f0 values of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 were very sensitive to annealing atmospheres. As the annealing time increased under O2 atmosphere the Q.f0 values of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 enhanced untill 10 hrs in 0.3$\leq$x$\leq$0.6 region, but degraded over that time. The increasing rate of Q.f0 value increased wth increasing x. On the other hand, as the annealing time increased under N2 atmosphere the Q.f0 values were constant in x$\leq$0.6 region, increased gradually in x$\geq$0.7 region. When 0.97Bi2O3-0.03Al2O3 and 0.76Bi2O3-0.24NiO of 3wt% as sintering additives were added to (Ca0.5La0.5) (Ti0.5Al0.5)O3 (x=0.5) the sintering temperature of 1$600^{\circ}C$ was lowered to 140$0^{\circ}C$, and the relative dielectric constant($\varepsilon$r) and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau$f) were not nearly changed. The addition of 0.97Bi2O3-0.03Al2O3 and 0.76Bi2O3-0.24NiO of 3wt% to (Ca0.5La0.5)(Ti0.5Al0.5)O3 made the Q.f0 values to be lower about 15% and 34%, respectively.
Ni/Ti/Al multilayer system ('/'denotes the deposition sequence) was tested for low-resistance ohmic contact formation to Al-implanted p-type 4H-SiC. Ni 30 nm / Ti 50 nm / Al 300 nm layers were sequentially deposited by e-beam evaporation on the 4H-SiC samples which were implanted with Al (norminal doping concentration = $4\times10^{19}cm^{-3}$) and then annealed at $1700^{\circ}C$ for dopant activation. Rapid thermal anneal (RTA) temperature for ohmic contact formation was varied in the range of $840\sim930^{\circ}C$. Specific contact resistances were extracted from the measured current vs. voltage (I-V) data of linear- and circular transfer length method (TLM) patterns. In constrast to Ni contact, Ni/Ti/Al contact shows perfectly linear I-V characteristics, and possesses much lower contact resistance of about $2\sim3\times10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm^2$ even after low-temperature RTA at $840^{\circ}C$, which is about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of Ni contact. Therefore, it was shown that RTA temperature for ohmic contact formation can be lowered to at least $840^{\circ}C$ without significant compromise of contact resistance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the existence of intermetallic compounds of Ni and Al as well as $NiSi_{1-x}$, but characteristic peaks of $Ti_{3}SiC_2$, a probable narrow-gap interfacial alloy responsible for low-resistance Ti/Al ohmic contact formation, were not detected. Therefore, Al in-diffusion into SiC surface region is considered to be the dominant mechanism of improvement in conduction behavior of Ni/Ti/Al contact.
An experimental study on drilling of stainless steel is conducted using TiAlN coated drills and HSS twist drills with several cutting conditions; feed rate, spindle rotational speed, and dry/wet cutting. The effects of number of hole on the thrust force are examined by cutting force measurement. The flank wear of the drills and the change of hole diameter are quantitatively observed using a vision system. It is found that the thrust force in drilling with TiAlN coated drills decrease under dry and wet machining, whereas the flank wear resistance is improved.
Substituted 3-phenyl-1-silabutanes such as 3-phenyl-1-silabutane (1), 3-(2,5-dimethylphenyl)-1-silabutane (2), 3-(p-chlorotolyl)-1-silabutane (3), and 3-naphthyl-1-silabutane (4) were prepared in 62-96% yield by reduction of the corresponding substituted 3-phenyl-1,1-dichloro-1-silabutanes with LiAlH4. The dehydrogenative polymerization of the monomer silanes was carried out with Cp2MCl2/Red-Al (M=Ti, Hf) catalyst system. The molecular weight of the polymers produced ranged from 700 to 1300 (vs polystyrene) with degree of polymerization (DP) of 5 through 16 and with polydispersity index (PDI)=1.1-2.1. The dehydrogenative polymerization of the monomer silanes with Cp2TiCl2/Red-Al catalyst system occurred at a faster rate and produced somewhat higher molecular weights of polysilane than that with Cp2HfCl2/Red-Al catalyst system.
The use of primitive cell volume and zero order Laue (ZOLZ) pattern is proposed to identify phase in a complex microstructure. Single convergent beam electron pattern containing higher order Laue zone ring from a nanosized region is sufficient to calculate the primitive cell volume of the phase, while ZOLZ pattern is used to determine the zone axis of the crystal. A computer program is used to screen out possible phases from the value of measured cell volume from convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) pattern. Indexing of ZOLZ pattern follows in the program to find the zone axis of the identification from a single CBED pattern. An example of the analysis is given from the rapidly solidified $Al-Al_3Ti$ system.
TiAi intermetallic compound has been extensively studied for possible high temperature structural applications because of its high specific strength at high temperature, high creep resistance, and good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. In addition to its good properties, an economic manufacturing routes should be developed for this material to be used more extensively. One of the promising route in manufacturing TiAl intermetallics is the Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (SHS) method. Thus in this study, an attempt was made to study the mechanism of the SHS process in TiAl synthesis. The composition of the sample was Ti-(45, 50, 53)at% Al and the microstuctures of the products were analyzed using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. When the phases formed at the main SHS reaction of whicyh combustion temperature is higher than the melting temperature of aluminum were identified as TiAl and Ti$_3$Al ; Ti$_3$Al cores surrounded by TiAl phase. In order to increase the combustion temperature, carbon was added 5 and 10at.%. When the carbon content was 10at.%, the heat of the reaction was large enough to melt the phase formed and that is consistent with the theoretical calculation results of the adiabatic temperature. The combution temperatue, which was measured by a computer data acquisition system, increased with the carbon content. The phases formed from the reaction involving the carbon added were indentified as TiAl and Ti$_2$AlC using XRD. The vickers hardness of the reaction product increased with the carbon content.
The effects of sintering atmospheres(air, O2, N2) on the sintering and microwave dielectric properties of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 system was investigated. The sintered density of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 under air atmosphere increased linearly with increasing x, but it decreased in the range of x>0.5 under O2 atmosphere and x>0.6 under N2 atmosphere in spite of the increament of the smaller La(1.06$\AA$) and Al(0.5 $\AA$) ion than Ca(0.99$\AA$) and Ti(0.6$\AA$). In case of the air sintering atmosphere of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 the two phases of orthorhombic and rhombohedral crystal system were coexisting, and the XRD peak of rhombohedral crystalsystem was to be higher with increasing x. However, the sintering atmosphere of O2 and N2 made the monophasic crystal system of orthorhombic keep up by x=0.5 and x=0.6, respectively, and it transformed to pseudo-cubic crystal system in x>0.5 and x>0.6. The XRD peak intensity of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 was to be gradually higher with increasing x under the air atmosphere of sintering. Whereas, its XRD peak intensity increased till x=0.6 but decreased with increasing x in the range of x>0.6 under O2 and N2 atmosphere. The relative dielectric constant of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 sintered under air atmosphere decreased linearly and the Q.f0 value increased according as x increased. On the other hand, the relative dielectric constant of (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 under O2 and N2 atmosphere decreased in the range of x$\leq$0.5 with increasing x, but increased rapidly in the range of x$\geq$0.6. And the Q.f0 value increased till x=0.6 but decreased in the range of x>0.6 with increasing x. The temperature coefficient of resonant frequency had no relation to sintering atmosphere.
Precipitation behavior has been studied in NiTi-based ordered alloy using transmission electron microscopy. The hardness after solution treatment is high in NiTi alloy suggesting the large contribution of solid solution strengthening in this alloy system. However, the amount of age hardening is not large as compared to the large microstructural variations during aging. At the beginning of aging, the $L2_1-type$$Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates keep a lattice coherency with the NiTi matrix. By longer periods of aging $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates lose their coherency and change their morphology to the globular ones surrounded by misfit dislocations. Misfit dislocations, which are observed on {100} planes of H-precipitates have the Burgers vector of a <100> with a pure edge type. The lattice misfits of $NiTi-Ni_2AlTi$ system is estimated from the spacings of misfit dislocations to be 1.3% at 1273 K. The lattice misfits decrease with increasing aging temperature in this system.
