Color and COD Removal of Rhodamine B Using Ozone, Photocatalyst and Ozone-Complex Process (오존, 광촉매 및 오존-복합 공정을 이용한 Rhodamine B의 색도와 COD 제거)

  • The effect of advanced oxidation processes such as $O_3$, $UV/TiO_2$, $O_3/UV$ and $O_3/UV/TiO_2$ on decolorization and COD removal of Rhodamine B(RhB) wastewater were considered. The results showed that the higher the $O_3$ concentration was, the higher the decolorization observed and the optimum $TiO_2$ dosage was 0.4 g/L in $UV/TiO_2$ and $O_3/UV/TiO_2$ process. $O_3/UV$ process showed the higher initial decolorization rate constant and the shorter termination time for decolorization than those of the $O_3$ process. The decolorization rate constants in various systems followed the order of $O_3/UV/TiO_2>O_3/UV>O_3{\gg}UV/TiO_2$. The decolorization rate of the RhB solution in every processes was more rapid than the mineralization rate identified by COD removal. The latter took longer time for further oxidation. The COD removal rate constants in four systems followed the order of $O_3/UV/TiO_2>O_3/UV>UV/TiO_2{\geqq}O_3$. Among four processes, combined photocatalysis and ozonation$(O_3/UV/TiO_2)$ was the most prospective process for removing color and COD such as dye wastewater.

Study on the R-curve Behaviour in $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiC$ Whisker Comosite ($Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiC$ Whisker 복합재료에서의 R-curve 거동에 관한 연구)

  • R-curve measurements were performed on Al2O3(matrix)-ZrO2-SiC whisker composite and Al2O3-ZrO2, Al2O3-SiC whisker composites in the favor of comparing the effect of ZrO2 and SiC whisker, as a second phase, to Al2O3 matrix. Al2O3-SiC whisker and Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC whisker were fabricated by hot pressing at 1$700^{\circ}C$, 15MPa and Al2O3-ZrO2 by pressureless sintering at 1$600^{\circ}C$. A controlled flaw/strength technique was utilized to determine fracture resistance as a function of crack extension and R-curve behaviour was determined from the relationship which is KR=K0(Δa)m. R-curveresults were KR=6.173$\times$Δa0.031 for Al2O3-ZrO2, KR=18.796$\times$Δa0.172 for Al2O3-SiC whisker and KR=11.96$\times$Δa0.110 for Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC whisker composite. From the analysis of R-curve and expeirmental data above three composites, it is found that R-curve behaviour of Al2O3-ZrO2-SiC whisker composite was dominated initially by the strengthening effect of ZrO2 and after, some extended crack were influenced by the effect of SiC whisker. Analysis of SEM and X-ray data revealed that whisker bridging in the crack wake and whisker pull-out mechanisms were the main mechanism for the R-curve behaviour.

Characterization of $SiO_2-P_2O_5-B_2O_3$ Glass Soot fabricated by Flame Hydrolysis Deposition (화염 가수분해 증착에 의해 형성된 $SiO_2-P_2O_5-B_2O_3$ 유리 미립자의 특성)

  • SiO2-P2O5-B2O3 glass soot was fabricated by flame hydrolysis deposition and their properties by SEM, XRD, TGA-DSC were investigated., The mechanism of consolidation process of a glass soot as a function of consolidation temperature was analyzed by SEM observations. In the XRD patterns, the crystalline peaks which seem to be generated from B2O3 and BPO4 were observed. When the temperature of heat treatment exceeded 105$0^{\circ}C$, the non-crystalline state of SiO2-P2O5-B2O3 glass was observed. In the TGA-DSC curves, the evaporation of water molecule by a sudden endothermic reaction was observed at 128$^{\circ}C$ and a broad endothermic peak was seen in the temperature range of 40$0^{\circ}C$-95$0^{\circ}C$, without any weight loss. Finally, this peak was began to recover its baseline at 953$^{\circ}C$. This point is equal to the temperature at which the densification begins. Furthermore, we observed that the addition of dopants such as P2O5 and B2O3 decrease the onset of consolidation temperature till 95$0^{\circ}C$.

The Reaction of Superoxide with Carbohydrate Sulphonates

  • The reaction between methyl 2,3-di-O-benzyl-4,6-di-O-mesyl-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranoside (1b) and potassium superoxide resulted in hydrolysis, and gave methyl 2,3-di-O-benzyl-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranoside (1) as a sole product. When the reaction was performed with a vicinal dimesylate, methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-2,3-di-O-mesyl-${\alpha}$-D-altropyranoside (4b), again the hydrolysis product, methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-${\alpha}$-D-altropyranoside (4) was obtained. However, the reaction of potassium superoxide with another vicinal dimesylate, methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-2,3-di-O-mesyl-${\alpha}$-D-glucopyranoside (3b), nucleophilic displacement took place to afford methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-${\alpha}$-D-altropyranoside (4). Apparently different results from two trans vicinal dimesylates, 3b and 4b are explained by the transient formation of epoxides, methyl 2,3-anhydro-4,6-O-benzylidene-${\alpha}$-D-allopyranoside (8) and methyl 2,3-anhydro-4,6-O-benzylidene-${\alpha}$-D-mannopyranoside (9) by $KO_2$. The reaction between the allo epoxide 8 and $KO_2$ gave altro 4. The manno epoxide 9 also afforded altro 4 as the major product. Facile epoxide formation by the reaction of a vicinal dimesylate and superoxide was also observed with 3-O-benzyl-1,2-O-isopropylidene-5,6-di-O-mesyl-${\alpha}$-D-glucofuranose: 5,6-anhydro-3-O-benzyl-1,2-O-isopropylidene-${\beta}$-L-idofuranose was obtained.

Investigation of $xV_2O_5-B_2O_3$ and $xV_2O_5-B_2O_3-yNa_3O$ Glasses by $^{11}B MAS$ NMR

  • $^{11}B MAS NMR$ spectra of binary glass system $xV_2O5-B_2O_3$ and ternary glass system $xV_2O5-B_2O_3-yNa_2O$ (x = $V_2O_5 mol%/$B_2O_3$ mol%, y = $Na_2O$ mol$/$B_2O_3$ mol%) were acquired. $BO_3$ units are dominant components in the spectra of $xV_2O_5-B_2O_3$glass systems while both $BO_3$ and $BO_4$ unit appear in comparable amounts in the spectra of $xV_2O_5-B_2O_3-yNa_2O$ glass systems. More $BO_3$ units were monitored for higher $V_2O_5$ contents while more $BO_4$ unit for higher $Na_2O$ contents. Quadrupole parameters such as $e^2qQ$ and $\eta$ obtained form spectral simulation indicate that $e^2qQ$ has a maximum value at x = y 1 and $\eta$ decreases and increases as x or y grows, respectively. Our results suggest that $V_2O_5$ and $Na_2O$ play opposite roles in the ternary glasses.

Highly Ordered Mesoporous Metal Oxides as Catalysts for Dehydrogenation of Cyclohexanol (메조기공을 갖는 다양한 금속 산화물 촉매를 이용한 사이클로헥사놀의 탈수소화 반응)

  • Cyclohexanone is important intermediate for the manufacture of caprolactam which is monomer of nylron. Cyclohexanone is generally produced by dehydrogenation reaction of cyclohexanol. In this study, highly mesoporous metal oxides such as meso-$WO_3$, meso-$TiO_2$, meso-$Fe_2O_3$, meso-CuO, meso-$SnO_2$ and meso-NiO were synthesized using mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template via nano-replication method for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol. The overall conversion of cyclohexanol followed a general order: meso-$WO_3$ >> meso-$Fe_2O_3$ > meso-$SnO_2$ > meso-$TiO_2$ > meso-NiO > meso-CuO. In particular, meso-$WO_3$ significantly showed higher activity than the other mesoporous metal oxides. Therefore, the meso-$WO_3$ has wide range of application possibilities for dehydrogenation of cyclohexanol.

Phase Relation and Microwave Dielectric Properties of $BaO-(Nd, Sm)_2O_3-TiO_2$ Ceramic System ($BaO-(Nd, Sm)_2O_3-TiO_2$계 세라믹스의 상관계 및 마이크로파 유전특성)

  • Phase relation and microwave dielectric properties of the system BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.TiO2 (n=4, 5) were studied. With n=5 (1 : 1 : 5), Ba2Ti9O20 and TiO2 formed in case of X$\leq$0.7, and Ba2Ti9O20 and Sm2Ti2O7 formed at X=1.0 as the second phases dispersed in fine-grained orthorhombic matrix phase. With n=4 (1 : 1 : 4). on the contrary, only fine grains of an ortho-rhombic phase were observed irrespective of Nd/Sm ratio. The compositions of these two stable orthorombic phases having distinct lattic constants even with the same Nd/Sm ratio were estimated as 4BaO.5(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.18TiO2 and BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.4TiO2 with n=5 and n=4 in the system BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.TiO2, respectively. Consequently the composition BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.5TiO2 lies in the compatible triangle of 4BaO.5(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.18TiO2 and the second phases mentioned above. The microwave dielectric properties (~4 GHz) of BaO.(Nd1-xSmx)2O3.5TiO2 can be controlled effectively by adjusting Sm content : with increasing X from 0 to 0.7, both dielectric constant and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency decreased monotonically from 82 to 65 and from 91 (ppm/$^{\circ}C$) to -19(ppm/$^{\circ}C$), respectively, while unloaded Q(Qo) remained constant at about 2,600.

  • In order to determine the standard composition of ZnO varistor with higher nonlinearity, various contents of $MnO_2$, $Co_2O_3$ were added to ZnO-1.0m/o $Bi_2O_3$ system. Also, samples that contained small amount of Sb, Si-oxides in standard composition determined before were fabricated. As a result, the standard composition of higher nonlinearity-oriented ZnO varistor was shown as ZnO-1.0 m/o $Bi_2O_3$-1.0m/o $MnO_2$-1.0m/o $Co_2O_3$ and $Sb_2O_3$ largely enhanced nonlinear exponent and nonlinear resistance, hut SiO largely enhanced nonlinear exponent only.

  • Fine $PbTiO_3$ Particles were synthesized from the $Pb(NO_3)_2$and $TiO(NO_3)_2$ solution by the spray pyrolysis method using the ultrasonic vibrator as a mist generator. The obtained particles were characterized. The mechanisms of particle formation were discussed in comparison with those if other particles, such as $BaTiO_3$, $ZnO_2$, ZnO ....., in the same spray pyrolysis process.

A study on the change of chemical composition of sediment particles of terrace deposits - A case of fine sediments at Jeongdongjin area - (단구 퇴적층의 화학 조성 변화에 대한 연구 - 정동진 단구의 세립 물질을 사례로 -)

  • Chemical composition of fine sediments from Jeongdongjin area are analyzed with XRF method. The results are compared with previously reported results of sandstones of the nearest Simgok port. The weight percentage of $SiO_2$ of the samples are far lower than those of sandstones of Simgok. It is supposed to be happened by the selective elution of $SiO_2$ from the sediment layer of coastal terrace, as there's no evidence of selective input or precipitation of other elements from outside. As a result of chemical alteration or weathering of sediment at coastal terrace, weight percentage of $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ of samples show far higher values than those of Simgok sandstone. In addition, the relative portion of $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ are decreased to upward within outcrop of terrace sediment layers. It could be caused by the chemical weathering progress with time. However Chemical Index of alteration(CIA) of sediment samples are no larger than 90 and it could be interpreted that it would take over 100ka for total weathering of sediment in this area. Meanwhile the ratio of $SiO_2/Al2O_3$ of terrace sediment showed as 3.48~6.0 and it is far smaller than those of Simgok sandstones(23.9~49.0). The ratio of $SiO_2/Fe_2O_3$ of terrace sediment(19.19~55.85) showed similar pattern with $SiO_2/Al2O_3$ (Simgok sanstone: 119.6~601.8). The ratios have a weak trend of decreasing upwards within the outcrop, there also a huge difference in value among the samples. Chemical composition of reddish brown and gray layers which suspected as the result of psudogleization reveals that reddish brown parts have higher concentration of $Fe_2O_3$ than other parts, while there was no significant difference in concentration of $Al_2O_3$ and CaO.
