Objectives: We performed an immunohistochemical study to examine the place of neovascularization in the tumorigenic process of follicular thyroid carcinoma and to determine whether tumor angiogenic activity in follicular carcinoma plays a role in tumor aggression. Materials & Methods: We studied 63 follicular thyroid carcinomas and compared with 22 follicular adenomas. The areas of capsular invasion, vascular invasion and cellular atypism of the tumor were confimed on H & E stains. The paraffin embedded tissues were stained by the use of monoclonal antibodies against Ag CD34. Microvesseles were counted in the area of highest vascular density at 200 times magnification. The microvessel densities(MVD) were analized in relation to histologic type and location of the tumors. Results: There were 59 minimal invasive types and 4 widely invasive types of carcinoma. In the histologic specimens of carcinomas, capsular invasion was identified in all the cases, vascular invasion in 46 and cellular atypism in 24. Mean values of the MVDs of the minimal invasive carcinomas, the widely invasive carcinomas and the adenomas were $263.8{\pm}69.2,\;256.l{\pm}49.3\;and\;241.5{\pm}159.4$, respectively and there was no significant difference between each group. In follicular carcinomas, there was a regional difference of the MVDs. The areas of tumor showing cellular atypism and adjacent to or penetrating the capsule, in which represents the tumorigenic process of carcinoma, had a higher rate of vascularization, than other areas of the tumor(p<0.05). However, these features were not noted in the follicular adenomas. Conclusion: Although there was no significant difference of the MVD between follicular carcinomas and adenomas, there was a regional difference of the MVD within the carcinomas and the values were significantly higher in the more malignant areas, as indicated by cellular atypism and capsular invasion. Therefore, tumor angiogenic activity measured by MVD may play a role in tumor aggression in follicular thyroid carcinoma.
PURPOSE. Xerostomia can diminish the quality of life, leads to changes in normal chemical composition of saliva and oral microbiata, and increases the risk for opportunistic infections, such as Candida albicans. Various artificial salivas have been considered for patients with xerostomia. However, the knowledge on the antifungal and antiadhesive activity of artificial saliva substitutes is limited. The aim of the present study was to evaluate influence of two artificial salivas on the adhesion of Candida albicans to the polymethylmethacrylate disc specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Two commercial artificial salivas (Saliva Orthana and Biotene Oral Balance Gel) were selected. 45 polymethylmethacrylate disc specimens were prepared and randomly allocated into 3 groups; Saliva Orthana, Biotene-Oral Balance gel and distilled water. Specimens were stored in the artificial saliva or in the sterile distilled water for 60 minutes at $37^{\circ}C$. Then they were exposed to yeast suspensions including Candida albicans. Yeast cells were counted using ${\times}40$ magnification under a light microscope and data were analysed. RESULTS. Analysis of data indicated statistically significant difference in adhesion of Candida albicans among all experimental groups (P=.000). Findings indicated that Saliva Orthana had higher adhesion scores than the Biotene Oral Balance gel and distilled water (P<.05). CONCLUSION. In comparison of Saliva Orthana, the use of Biotene Oral Balance Gel including lysozyme, lactoferrin and peroxidase may be an appropriate treatment method to prevent of adhesion of Candida albicans and related infections in patients with xerostomia.
Statement of problem: The high melting temperature and chemical reactivity of titanium necessitates casting machines different from those used in conventional casting. Despite the new developments in Ti casting systems , inadequate mold filling and internal porosity are frequently observed casting defects. Therefore, the study on the fabrication technique including sprue design to solve these casting defects is still necessary. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of sprue design and cross sectional area of sprue on the internal porosity. Materials and methods: 30 simulated cast three units titanium crowns were prepared. 5 cast crowns for each with different sprue design(sinlge sprue, double sprue and plate sprue) of two cross sectional areas (small and large cross sectional areas) were fabricated. The sections of titanium castings were photographed in a microscope at ${\times}100$ magnification to record internal porosities. Results and Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. There was a significantly lower in internal porosity of titanium castings for large cross sectional area of sprue group than the small group (P<.05) 2. There was no significant difference in internal porosity among sprue designs in similar cross sectional area of sprue (P>.05).
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) for detecting sealant microleakage. Materials and Methods: A total of 31 extracted sound human molar, assigned as suitable for sealant application, were chosen and divided into two groups: (1) no microleakage group and (2) microleakage group by applying sealant using the different methods. All specimens were immersed in 1% methylene blue for 24 h and sectioned to confirm the absence or presence of sealant microleakage as a gold standard method. Subsequently, all the sectioned specimens were digitally photographed using a microscope with a magnification of ${\times}50$. Presence of microleakage was evaluated on a 2-point rating scale. The association of histological method with conventional methods (visual and tactile assessment) and SS-OCT was assessed using a chi-squared test. The intra- and inter-examiner reliability was calculated using Cohen's Kappa. Results: The SS-OCT showed a sensitivity of 0.73 and a specificity of 1.00, while visual and tactile assessment showed a sensitivity of 0.67 and a specificity of 0.86. The inter-examiner reliability of SS-OCT was 0.79, whereas that of the visual and tactile assessment was 0.53. Conclusions: SS-OCT can be used to non-invasively detect sealant microleakage and to monitor pit and fissure sealant in the clinics.
This study aims to find out geometric parameters which practitioner adjustable to reduce dose in coronary angiography. We take fluoroscopy and cine exposure by use of phantom, and got dose use the dose-area product(DAP) meter of angiography device, than convert DAP to effective dose. As results, Cine exposure shows higher dose measurement about 6-7 times than fluoroscopy. Dose in frame per second(FPS) mode could be decrease down to 70%, as lower FPS. In view of X-ray tube angle, LAO $45^{\circ}$+Caudal $30^{\circ}$ shows highest dose measurement. More use of Collimator, lower dose measurement. Source-image intensifier distance(SID) get longer to 10cm, dose of each fluoroscopy and cine exposure increase up to 25-30%. Image magnification of field of view(FOV) could increase dose up to 1.21-2 times. Also table-image intensifier distance get longer to 10cm, dose increased 1.11-1.25 times. Practitioner can adjust several geometric parameters, as FPS mode, tube angle, Collimation, SID, table-image intensifier distance, FOV. And each factors can reduce radiation dose in coronary angiography.
The purpose of this study was to assess the marginal fit of three-unit bridges produced using LAVA CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) system and conventional PFG in vitro. Materials and methods: #11, 13 resin teeth were prepared on dentiform, then duplicated. Twenty resin models were fabricated, ten for PFG 3-unit bridges and ten for LAVA 3-unit bridges. Each bridge was cemented on the resin model. Marginal discrepancy was measured with stereoscopic microscope (Nikon DS-Fi 1, Nikon, Japan) at a magnification of ${\times}75$. Independent t-test was done for the statistical analysis. Results: The mean marginal discrepancy values and standard deviations of the PFG bridges was $97.1{\pm}18.7\;{\mu}m$ for incisors, $76.6{\pm}21.8\;{\mu}m$ for canines; that of the LAVA bridges was $90.4{\pm}26.7\;{\mu}m$ for incisor, $110.2{\pm}30.2\;{\mu}m$ for canines. The mean marginal discrepancy between PFG and LAVA for incisor did not show significant difference (P<.05). But for canine, the mean marginal discrepancy of PFG bridges was smaller than that of LAVA bridges (P<.05). Conclusion: The LAVA CAD/CAM 3-unit bridges and the PFG 3-unit bridges showed clinically acceptable marginal discrepancy.
The purpose of this study is to promote the substitution of rice flour for wheat flour in making bread and thus the consumption of rice by examining the effect of particle size of rice flour on leavening rice bread. For this purpose, several experiments were carried out. With regard to particle size distribution, 59.45% of wheat flour had passed 200 mesh and 3 kinds of rice flour milled to penetrate into 20, 35, and 45 mesh (S1, S2 and S3) had passed 21.88%, 33.1% and 36.38% of those for 200 mesh, respectively. To leaven the rice flour dough to bread, 25% of vital gluten was needed. To determine the optimal water quantity for rice bread dough, the hardness of wheat and rice flour dough was measured by rheometer. The appropriate water quantity for S1, S2 and S3 was set at 285 ml , 295 ml and 335${\sim}$340m1, respectively. The loaf volume index of the wheat flour bread was 6.24, while that of and rice flour bread S1, S2 and S3 was 5.38, 5.50 and 5.75, respectively. These results indicated that the loaf volume index of rice flour bread is lower than that of wheat flour bread, but that the volume of rice flour bread was increased with fuel particle size of rice flour. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), image of the wheat bread tissue at a magnification of 35 times showed long, large, oval-shaped, air cells and thin cell membrane, as well as small air cells, whereas the images of rice flour showed angular, circular, air cells and rough and thick cell membrane. The size and number of air cells in the rice bread were larger in S2 and S3 with fuel particle flours than in S1. In particular, the bread made with S3 contained many air cells that were as large as those in the wheat bread were. In addition, when the inner cell wall was magnified 1500 times, almost no small air cell was observed in C and S3, whereas many fine air cells were observed in the cell wall of S1 and S2.
The purpose of this study was to compare apical sealing ability of continuous wave canal filling technique according to various heat source plugging depths. Eighty one extracted human premolars with straight root were cleaned and shaped to size 35 using .06 taper rotary NiTi file. After cleansing and shaping, the teeth were divided into 5 groups following the heat source probing depths from the apex; 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm. All specimens were filled using E&Q plus with #35/.06 tapered gutta-percha cone. The positive control teeth were not filled. All teeth were coated with nail varnish except the apical 1 mm around the apical foramen. Negative control teeth were completely sealed include the apical foramen. All specimens were immersed in 1% methylene blue solution for 72 hours. Then the specimens were sectioned horizontally at 1, 2 and 3 mm from the root apex. Each sectioned surface was photographed using a digital camera attached to the stereomicroscope at $12.5{\times}2.5$ fold magnification. All points at 1, 2 and 3 mm were summed as final score of one specimen. Statistical analysis of the collected data was performed. Under the condition of this study. there was no significant difference between the heat source plugging depths of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 mm in apical sealing ability. All of apical heat source plugging depth from 3 to 7 mm including Buchanan's protocol -from 5 to 7 mm- seems to be acceptable in clinical application.
The beneficial effect of glucose and phosphate ions in culture medium on the development of human embryos in vitro has not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of fertilization and culture of embryos in glucose/phosphate-free m-TALP medium on pregnancy rates in IVF-ET program. The patients in 244 IVF-ET cycles received GnRH agonist + HMG regimens. A does of 10,000 IU HCG was administered when two or more dominent follicles reached 18mm in diameter. Thirty-six hours after HCG, oocytes were recovered transvaginally using ultrasound guidance. Aspirated oocytes were matured for 4 to 6 h in TCM-199 supplemented with 10% follicular fluid (FF). Insemination was carried out with 50,000 motile spermatozoa in TCM-199 + 10% FF or m-TALP + 5% FF + 5% fetal cord serum (FCS) according to experimental design. After 6 h, oocytes were washed 3 to 4 times and cultured in each fresh medium. After 20 h, oocytes were freed from cumulus/corona cells and examined for the presence of pronuclei. Fertilized oocytes were transferred into each co-culture drops and cultured for further incubation. On day 3, embryo transfer was performed with grade 1 and 2 embryos. Monolayers for co-culture of embryos were prepared by plating $1{\times}10^5$ cumulus cells/ml in 10ul drop of TCM-199 + 10% FF or m-TALP + 5% FF + 5% FCS media 24 h prior to the onset of co-culture. Development to 4 to 16 cell stage was observed at 70x magnification following two days of incubation. Pregnancy was confirmed by detecting increasing serum ${\beta}$-hCG concentrations for 11 days following embryo transfer. Data were analyzed by ${\chi}^2$-test. Oocytes from 244 IVF-ET cycles were randomized. The number of cycles and mean age of patients were 97 and 147, 31.3 yrs and 31.2 yrs for TCM-199 (control) and m-TALP groups, respectively. The mean number of retrieved oocytes/cycle, fertilization rates, number of embryos transferred/ET and pregnancy rates were 11.1 and 10.3, 65.1% and 67.3%, 4.1 and 4.7, 28.9% and 43.8% for TCM-199 and m-TALP groups, respectively. Differences in the pregnancy rates were found between control and m-TALP groups (p<0.05). The pregnancy rate of patients divided according to maternal age groups of ${\leq}30$, 31-35, $36{\leq}$ were 44.4% and 49.0%, 26.1% and 41.3%, 29.2% and 41.2% for control and m-TALP groups, respectively. These data indicate that culture of human embryos in glucose/phosphate-free m-TALP medium improves pregnancy rates.
A high performance LWIR(long wavelength infra red) zoom thermal imaging sensor using $480{\times}6$ HgCdTe(MCT) linear detector has been developed by ADD Korea. The optical system consists of zoom telescope having large objective about 190 mm diameter and optically well corrected scanning system. The zoom ratio of the telescope is 3: 1 and its magnification change is performed by moving two lens groups. And also these moving groups are used for athermalization of the system. It is certain that the zoom sensor can be used in wide operating temperature range without any degradation of the system performance. Especially, the sensor image can be displayed with the HDTV(high definition television) format of which aspect ratio is 16:9. In case of HDTV format, the scanning system is able to display 620,000 pixels. This function can make wider horizontal field of view without any loss of performance than the normal TV format image. The MRTD(minimum resolvable temperature difference) of the LWIR thermal imaging sensor shows good results below 0.04 K at spatial frequency 2 cycles/mrad and 0.23 K at spatial frequency 8 cycles/mrad at the narrow field of view.
